The cavu is a hidden gem in the area. Mostly locals go here. I frequent this place when I'm home. The location is pretty much in the middle of no where on a grass air strip and there is no cell service here. So I can't check in. When headed to the cavu you might say to yourself there can't be a resturant out here there is nothing around and then you hit the place. The parking lot is gravel and really big because cavu is on a active local air strip. Almost every time I have eaten here. A plane or a helicopter lands or takes off. I have also ran into someone I know every time I go here. It's all locals. Sometimes I don't like to go here because I do run into people I know and they ask me questions and want to catch up and if I came home from a long trip sometimes I just like to eat my dinner with who I'm with in peace. Actor Robert dinero has a house not far away he takes the helicopter from here to the airport. I have taken a helicopter out of here and it's great the mountains are beautiful and it's really quick to get to the airport when you take the chopper out of here. They also launch a medical helicopter that flys to westchester hospital out of here The food. I have never had a bad meal here even on Friday nights when it has been packed. Some nights they have live music. One time I got up with my friends in the middle of the band playing outside. Huge mistake they stopped playing and said where are you going. I was so embarrassed but I yelled to them I have a flight to catch I have to be at a nascar event tomorrow. Then the band said nascar and everyone cheered. I was like omg really did that happen There wings are great here honey BBQ are amazing. I also had a meeting here and the staff was great with putting me outside but not placing people near my table. Overall this place is great I will be back. I recommend this place to anyone who wants a diffrent type of eating experience or if you like planes it's a must. My wife and I have been to Nu-CAVU on two occasions. Once for a full dinner and once for a drink and and some appetizers. Both visits were good and we definitely enjoyed ourselves. The food was very good and there was a nice variety on the menu. Prices are above average for the area, definitely not like going to a diner or a chain restaurant. but not outlandish for a nice place. The decor looks like an old cabin with tall ceilings and large windows that have the view of the air strip. You will see small planes land and its a great piece of conversation. We have been going to the Nu Cavu for years! We love sitting outside in the nice weather.......have never had a bad meal, always have to take home a doggie bag cause their portions are so big! Everyone is so friendly. I would suggest that if you plan on going you make a reservation. They will do their best to seat you if you don't have one, as we found out one Friday evening when we arrived w/o a reservation, but they fit us in! read more

I arranged a small dinner here for a group of 10-15 people. I quickly learned that the employees here are honest, have integrity, and are not looking to take advantage of their customers. I was on the verge of opting for a buffet style dinner, which would've been $30/pp. While finalizing the plans, one of the employees made me aware that the buffet minimum is 25 people and $30/pp would really become $50/pp. She recommended that we all order from the menu and avoid the buffet because the menu pricing is must cheaper. A dishonest establishment would've let me proceed and then squeezed us for every last drop of cash. Staff here are friendly and courteous. The restaurant is clean. It's located on the grounds of Kobelt Airport. This is a nice restaurant - not extremely formal, but not too casual. The prices are a little bit steep, hence 4 stars. read more

The Nu Cavu is a fine eating establishment whose location and restaurant ambiance are even better than the food. Located on a small runway, the Nu Cavu provides an excellent space to eat and drink with an exciting backdrop- A runway. Occasionally helicopters, small planes, and skydivers will grace the Nu Cavu grounds, often times within view of your dining room table. There's nothing wrong with the food, but there's nothing that really "wow'd" me. It's somewhat-traditional Italian fare, with dishes like seared Ahi tuna and grilled teriyaki salmon to spice things up. Everything tasted great and was served hot and fresh, but again, no "wow" factor. The service and ambiance would make me return. Perhaps next time a drink at the bar with an appetizer would be best. read more

Had always wanted to try this place as we heard good things about it and read all the reviews. Unfortunately on this particular night it wasn't that great. Hubby and I went on a Saturday night at 6:30 pm and got one of the last tables available during that time. We had looked at the menu on-line before we arrived and narrowed down what we thought we'd like to have but upon arriving and being seated we were handed what looked to be the lunch menu. When we asked the waitress she said that they had limited chefs that evening and thus could only handle what was available on this menu. I had decided on the fried calamari for my appetizer and hubby opted for the charcuterie plate - we both opted for the french-dip sandwhich with fries for our entries. Hubby asked the waitress for gravy on the fries and she said something to the effect that their chefs wouldn't be able to prepare that tonight. Hmmm - anyway our appetizers arrived and looked good especially hubby's charcuterie plate which looked beautiful. At first bite the smaller pieces of calamari on top tasted good but the larger pieces beneath them were too chewy and the breading was sliding off - I ate maybe half and pushed my plate to the side. A server came by and asked me how was it and I said "Mmeh" and she asked me if I still wanted it and I told her I was done eating it and she took it away. Hubby's charcuterie plate unfortunately left little to be desired as sadly there wasn't much he could eat on it. Aside from a few slices of prosciutto and mozzarella and some olives the rest he could not eat as it was inedible to him. He shared some of it with me and I agreed - large blocks of parmesean cheese on the plate and the same used for some stuffed peppers was not the best choice of cheese and was a sad waste of money. Our sandwhichs came out and they were ok - if it didn't have the au jus it would have been a bit hard to eat as it was a bit dry - the fries were nothing special. Maybe this was just an off night since they admitted they were short-handed so we may try it again in the future - will have to see. read more

But when my wife asks to speak to a manager and you tell us that you are TOO BUSY to come out and talk that's where I draw the line. That is beyond poor customer service that I couldn't ever imagine. And worst part is I just got done telling people I loved this place. BUT that was until you told us you were TOO BUSY to talk to one of your customers for thirty seconds. Says a lot. Cute restaurant; however, we had a horrible experience. As the restaurant sits on a local airport, we flew in from Long Island. We did not have reservations; however only 40% of the indoor tables were occupied and additional Tables outside were open. When we asked if they could sit 2 of us, they said no. We then asked if we could sit at the bar; they said there was no room. We decided to order takeout, and several minutes into waiting for our food, they made room at the bar for another couple. Additionally, as we waited, couples left, and there were additional tables open. The hostess never offered us a spot. Maybe this is a locals only spot but regardless we won't be back! read more

Love this place. We go a couple times a month and the wait staff knows us by name. They are always very personable and professional, especially to our kids which is important. Not uncommon for the owner to come over and say Hi to every table. In the summer on Fridays there is skydiving and bands, bring the kids or leave them home, either is fine, always gonna be a cool car, airplane or helicopter buzzing around. The food is always great. Been there 20+ times and never had a bad meal. Winter time there is a nice fireplace inside cozy up with drink and relax. Feels like you're at a ski resort. Great seasonal decor and menu. My wife and I went over there Saturday since we're only 10 minutes away and had not been there in a long time. They are well suited to handle dining in the pandemix as they have ample outdoor dining. We decided just to have starters and were rewarded with great tasting clams and bacon wrapped shrimp topped off with an arugala salad for my wife and a wedge for myself. I have always enjoyed this spot! My hubby n I sit at the bar usually, but it's nice that you get to choose from any of the menus. If you want to snack, there are tapas...if you want dinner, there's plenty of entrees...or you can go in between with a wrap or sandwich. As big fans of the OLD CAVU (which we were very sorry to see finally shut their doors for good in 2009), we went into this new establishment with a bitter-sweet attitude. Unfortunately, the overall operations have changed enough so that no residual of the old CAVU could be found anywhere, for the exception of the warm, contemporary but rustic atmosphere of the building itself, which has remained unchanged. Another minor disappointment is that while the old CAVU's menu featured a wide variety of typical and unusual items, the Nu-Cavu's menu appears to be geared primarily to Italian dishes. This was a little odd for us, having been to the old CAVU so many times prior. One of my favorite types of foods is Mexican (authentic) so I was happy to visit recently on Nu-Cavu's Mexican Wednesdays night. The Mexican specialties menu was extensive but somewhat boring. The daily special appetizer dishes we ordered were very tasty, but charging $14. for an appetizer featuring only 3 shrimps and $15. for the other which featured only 5 scallops is exorbitant and not worth the high price-tag, even though the dishes were artfully prepared. Another rip-off that REALLY irked me were the so-called margherita pints. At $6.50 each I'm thinking "this is a great deal". Well, yeah- maybe if they had even bothered to put some alcohol in them, it would have been. But I would bet money that there was not even a DROP of liqour in the mix. Now, $6.50 for a pint of lime-aide doesn't seem like such a good deal after all, huh? If I had wanted a virgin margherita, I would have ordered one, thank you. ;) We noted that most of the wait staff appeared to be very young, which in itself is not a bad thing, but as a matter of fact, signifies inexperience. Service was OK- not awful by any means, but just mediocre and acceptable. Our waiter was not a juvie by any means, but with his extremely melancholy personality, he seemed almost depressed to us! All in all the food is good, service is OK, decor and ambiance are nice (again- the air strip runway is pretty cool and unique for dining) but beware of watered-down cocktails, and exorbitantly priced daily "specials". Oh- one more thing: The old CAVU had a notable problem with sulfur odor in their potable well water- really smelly ! (Hydrogen Sulfide gas, actually) but Nu-Cavu has corrected the problem, probably with chlorine treatment. (In my profession, I'm educated about potable water problems) read more

This is tied with the best meals I've had in the Hudson Valley. I was a HUGE fan of Bullshead Inn until it closed in 2012(?). I tried that new place on Broadway (El Solar...) it was $100 worth of GROSS served horribly. A coworker recommended this when I told her I was headin go Bonefish Grill. She said - save the gas, this is MUCH better . i didn't know if I could trust her, but it was worth trying. I'm glad I did. I had the crabcake app - it was NOT a maryland crabcake, it had a heavy fried coating that detracted from the fresh crabby flavor, but it didn't skimp on the crab. The sauce seemed to be a white remoulade - it was delicious. Hub had the lobster tempura which he loved. I found it to be quite greasy, but full of delicious lobster. Entree - I had the ravioli with seafood, and it was to die for. The scallops wer tender and sweet. The lobster was plenty and full-flavored. The shrimp were the tastiest small shrimp I've ever met. The ravioli itself was good, but the filling was a bit pasty and could have used some texture - the flavor of the filling was good. Hub had salmon with mashed potatoes and broccoli. The salmon could have used a little more seasoning- as could the potatoes. The broccoli was simply steamed, but tasty and beautifully served. The salmon was topped with a handful of fried leeks which were tasty and surprising. The portions were generous, the atmosphere was upscale casual. It was surprisingly exciting to watch the small planes take off and land. We were tickled pink to watch skydivers (!!) go up and come back down after dinner. It was an awesome night. read more

Strangely, the food, atmosphere and service is much better in the dining room that the bar. The $12 order of chicken wings was more like chickadee wings. Awful quality, small, broken bone pieces. The sauce was good but could not fix what it covered. Friday happy hour was introduced as "sorry our beer is coming out slow and foamy". Not one craft brew available. Poor planning by management. The girls behind the bar were fake friendly and failed to pay attention to detail. They were pouring 3/4 full pint glasses due to the foam rather that letting the beer sit and be topped off. Restrooms were a disaster by 7 PM. If you choose to try Nucavu, stay in the dining room and order entrees. Chances are things will be a little better. Better yet keep driving North to Gardiner or New Paltz. read more

For a full service restaurant, Nu Cavu has quite a unique location - it's next to a runway. When I stopped by, there was a car show next door and airplanes taking off and landing every few minutes. The building itself is nice with two separate dining rooms, a bar, and an outdoor terrace. The only downside is the food - for an Italian restaurant that offers fine dining it feels like the place has run into some culinary challenges. Our "stack" appetizer which consists of a combination of zucchini, a portobello mushroom, eggplant, peppers, and mozzarella wasn't as good as its individual parts - somehow the flavors melted together and it made for a poor mix without any pop. The same was the case for the pasta dish we ordered, there was nothing wrong with it but it wasn't that good. For the burger, the patty reminded me of my grade school lunch meals and it came on a roll bun. Overall, I felt the place had a ton of potential in its location and I would love to go back. I also found it to be a good value - I just wish the kitchen would be in better order next time I stop by. read more

NU CAVU is an acronym (at least the last 4) of a pilots term for a good flight conditions "Clear Air Visibility Unlimited" fitting since it is located a a small craft airport in Wallkill. This restaurant is very busy, parking lot was packed as was bar but the dining room is spacious, warm and welcoming. The dining room is nicely separated from bar area by french doors which keeps it from intruding into your dinner, even even a band fired up at about 9 PM. The menu has something for everyone including steaks, seafood a large selection of appetizers. If I had to say the menu leans towards italian but even picky people will be satisfied. I had a broiled seafood dish which included shrimp, scallops and flounder served with your choice of side I had a tomato basil rice and broccoli every thing was delicious served hot, my wife had a chicken and shrimp franciase over angel hair which was very good and done perfectly. Everyone else had varied dishes and all raved. Deserts were all so very good and there was a large selection. Hats off to our wait staff who was efficient and unobtrusive things just appeared and disappeared and all was paced well. The only thing that I can say on the down side is I thought the prices were a bit on the high side but if your on a budget you will still find something on the menu. We went to this restaurant Friday evening with friends. I have not been there in a few years and decided we wanted to go there for something different. The Restaurant is dated and really could use a facelift. There were many empty tables however we had to wait almost an hour and a half to be seated because of the lack of waitstaff. When we were finally seated it took almost 2 hours to receive our order. Everything came out at once the salad, appetizers and entrée. The food was very salty and was so bad no one in our party finished their meals. If we were ever to go back we would just have drinks and watch the parachuters. read more

I just had my boyftiends 40th surprise birthday party at NuCavu. I looked into a few places and this place was the most helpful and accommodating. From the first phone call I got nothing but friend demeanor from Mallory. Shes the event coordinator there. Given how trying times are now and I know planning a party is a bit difficult, the team at NuCavu made it stress free, seamless and fun. The party was great and they have a great outdoor section totally separate from the restaurant if you want to have a more intimate event. Fantastic runway-side restaurant. We flew in there for lunch in August, 2013, but I only got around to posting review now. Ample airplane parking right along fenced patio in front of restaurant. Elegant dining, even on the outdoor patio. Good beer selection (for those of us not flying the airplane, of course). We all had salads and I had an au jus steak sandwich for lunch. Last evening we had Valentine dinner with another couple. This place never disappoints! We went early and had some wine while seated on comfy couches in front of their fireplace. Very nice!... The hostess and wait staff were excellent, and the food was perfectly prepared and delicious. I ordered lamb chops from the daily specials. I could not believe how good they were. The cream sauce was delicious, and it must have neutralized the typical lamb flavor, for it did not taste like lamb; just delicious tenderness. Our companions also raved about how good their food was. The Chef and staff really know what they are doing. We have eaten here many times. It is always very good. The only complaint I have is their tap water has a strong sulfur odor. They replaced it with a $7 bottle of store-bought. Get a filter, or at least some Poland Spring! After driving from Maryland to the KOA in Plattekill and setting up we decided just to go out for dinner. We saw the Nu Cavu ad in the KOA brochure and decided to try it. We were pleasantly surprised at the appearance of the restaurant inside and out. Service was excellent. My wife ordered the "Maryland" crab cakes and the grilled seafood platter. The crab cakes had no resemblance to MD crab cakes. I wanted to send them back but the wife said they were edible. She said the seafood platter was very good. I had the prime rib special. It also was very good. The red sangria was only ok. It was a little pricey but would consider going again. read more

We stopped here for drinks and appetizers last evening and everything was wonderful. It was really busy, so unfortunately, extremely loud. The acoustics in the bar aren't good. But other than that, it was great. The bartenders were working very hard and doing a great job. We had three appetizers and loved them, especially the ahi tuna.
