We had a roof leak. Because of this and the age of our roof we decided to replace it. We hired North Star after getting several bids. They were right in the middle of the bids we received. Because of the weather there was a couple of week lag time. Luckily they came out to put a temporary fix in our leak for no additional charge. The night after they came out and fixed it it dumped like crazy but our roof help up. They were very communicative during the whole process and they emailed us pictures during the construction to show us their progress. After a week we had a fantastic roof. North Star Construction (NSC) installed my roof in 2016. Overall it was a decent job, although took longer than expected. Then in February 2020 the roof developed two leaks in two different rooms. They came out and repaired both. The leaks seemed to be ok. Now in June 2021 one of the spots started leaking again. I phoned and left messages, but no call back. I once managed to speak to someone named Fran who said she was just answering phone calls and passing on messages. She said she would pass on the message and someone would get back, but never did. Now I just get voicemail full messages. I am wondering if this company is even still around? read more

After gathering several bids for replacement of our ancient roof, we decided to go with North Star. Their bid represented a nice combination of value and quality. Plus they were available to complete our project surprisingly quickly. They finished work in a timely fashion and the only cost-overrun was for replacing a bunch of rotten plywood that wasn't discovered until the old roofing was removed. And the overage charge for the extra plywood was totally fair. . . They even noticed when our furnace installer failed to properly flash the furnace vent so we could follow up with them on that. . . Right away there were major issues with the quality of work performed and the professional manner of the crew and contractor Peter J. Evins at Northstar. Almost immediately it was evident that the crew that was working on my property was not a professional crew with workers showing up on more than one occasion with an underage minor climbing on the roof with his father, crew drinking beers during lunch periods then returning to work on the roof, drinking beer after the work in my backyard on site, never being properly tied off or secured via OSHA compliance and the companies own contract. As a licensed contractor Peter and Northstar should have had a person onsite to supervise and their employees workmanship and behavior. The crew was called to redo or correct work they "Completed" during every step of the installation process. The contractor was also not on site supervising the work even after requesting his presents on site and to verify the quality of the work of his crew several times. Contractor failed to be present on site during work or review any of the crew's work until we, as clients, called or texted pictures of our complaints. I regret ever hiring this company. Having to have daily check-ins with the company in order for the work to be done correctly should not be an expectation, nor was it our responsibility. The lack of transparency, failure to oversee the quality and procedural correctness of the project, the unprofessionalism of the foreman and crew members, as well as the ethical deficiency to not cut corners has resulted in poor quality work and the irreversible damage to this company's reputation. read more

The team at North Star Construction has been a dream to work with. We had them quote new windows for our 2 bedrooms. We had a great conversation with one rep regarding the different options for styles as well as sound proofing to make sure we had exactly what we wanted. After ordering the windows and getting an install date on the books, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Unfortunately, we had to delay the installation but a few months however the team (specifically Russ, the owner) kept in contact with us the entire time, offering to come and secure the windows once they had been delivered at our property, and eventually making sure we were one of the first projects to get booked when construction was allowed to resume. The install took about 6 hours (for 4 windows) and Tony made sure to ask questions along the way and stay communicative throughout the process. Both installers wore masks and booties when inside the house made sure to cover our furniture to protect from any dust and did a great job cleaning at the end. Russ even stopped by the next day to pick up a check for the remaining balance instead of mailing it. You wont meet a more dedicated and friendly owner in this business. We bought an old Seattle bungalow and found old windows boarded up in the walls as we were renovating. We wanted more light, but the old windows weren't salvageable - enter NSC Builders. Russ and his team are wonderful to work with. We needed to re-roof my wife's house (she hadn't done this since owning it) and we got a number of quotes from different roofers. I think one of the things that Russ does well is explaining the differences in what you get. We got a wide range of quotes (some much less, and others that were more than North Star) but clearly the materials and workmanship vary depending the company. Russ offered 2 levels of service, with the standard service being very comparable in price to many independent contractors, and their signature service being several thousand more. We ended up going with signature due to the better materials and quality of service. We did not get the absolute lowest price possible compared to other quotes, but I think the quality-to-price ratio from North Star is one of the best, and I feel that they are a company I can trust. Gilberto and his crew were amazing and great to work with. He was in constant communication and took descriptive pictures of many of the areas that needed additional work. Our overall experience with North Star was positive and I would recommend others to strongly consider using them for their work. The only hiccup we ran into was that our satellite TV stopped working, which is common with any roof work; however, letting us know in advance would have been nice, because we had to relocate a planned gathering to a different location last minute due to this. read more

North Star installed my roof in 2014. They were extremely helpful and honest. I didn't trust the gentleman I dealt with 100%, but the price was good, and I had a pretty good gut feeling. We opted to leave the roofing boards in place instead of replacing it with plywood. About a year later, I was up on the roof and noticed what looked like a roofing board that might have come up a bit, which is something that I knew might be a risk. I had trouble getting ahold of the gentleman I'd dealt with and felt discouraged, and filled out the "Contact Us" form on North Star's web page. Russ wrote back in short order (I learned that that the gentleman was no longer at North Star), and he pledged to send someone out to take a look. They had someone out and fixing the issue within a day or so. He was friendly and efficient. Another year later, I noticed a bit of water coming in through the roof, and wrote Russ. He jumped into action, and he and another fellow came out the next day. This was after a big windstorm, and my house is partially covered by a tree, and it turns out that the massive amount of pine needles (we have a lot of them) had simply bunched up behind a vent and made a ramp up into it, letting water inside. Russ and the other gentleman cleaned around the vents and made suggestions about keeping them that way. So, even though I'd originally thought the issue was probably warranty work, it totally wasn't, and they were just plain nice and super helpful. These guys are great! read more

Being the avid Yelper I am, I found them here with their great reviews and asked them to bid to repair a portion of our roof (a flat area over an addition) along with three other places. We chose them based on the reasonable (although not lowest) price and based on the reviews here, the feeling the job- previously incorrectly done twice by two different craiglist 'roofer' finds - would be done right finally. The good news, it was indeed done correctly, the roof is absolutely what we hoped for. The bad news? Although they worked really hard to accommodate our small job, we were pretty confused the whole time so the communication on this and the follow through was...just not good. It wasn't the worst I've ever experienced- and remember, this was a three star (a-ok) review, not a one star (eek, me thinks not) - and we did get a slight discount for the trouble of a promised one day job that turned into a 2+ week finishing fiasco, but still, I have to say that it was not up to my expectations set from the previous reviews. I wonder if maybe they're great with larger jobs but not so great with smaller ones? I sat on this review forever, because I kept thinking maybe I'd change my mind, I do hate so much to ruin their rating with a lower score but no matter how much I'm happy the roof is working fine, I'm still just left feeling that the experience overall shouldn't have been so disjointed and confusing for us. read more

Let me try to sum this up with as little hyperbole as possible. Russ and his team provided (and continue to provide) the best customer service experience I've had in any business interaction. I'm not just saying for contractors (which we all know can be a little flaky), but ANY business interaction. They are THAT good. We have a small roof, in a decent (though by no means great) neighborhood and Russ treated us as though we were his only customer. He was always punctual, he always did what he said he was going to do exactly when he said he would do it (all the way down to text messaging me photos of the work in progress). He took the time late one evening to go over the estimates provided and answer every question I had, plus advised me on which option to choose for our needs. Usually this just means someone is trying to upsell you to their most expensive product, not Russ. He recommended taking a more moderate approach to save us a bit of money while still ensuring that we would have the best roof for our needs. And let's talk about that roof. Construction only took two days, and afterwards my neighbors (many of whom are in the midst of their own roofing projects) walked over and began pointing at our roof. It is absolutely beautiful, and we've gotten several compliments in the days following completion. We couldn't be happier, and knowing that we have a ten year guarantee on the workmanship with a company that has integrity gives us peace of mind. I did mention the "continuing" customer service, right? Well, after our roof was completed we needed some work on our chimney and the mason we found was having all manner of issues. It sounded like nonsense to me, but having little experience in the matter and fewer friends in the business, I dropped Russ a line to get his opinion on the situation. He called me within the hour to discuss the details and give his professional opinion which aligned with what my gut was telling me. It also bears mentioning that he didn't even blame the mason for his flakiness, but took the professional high road while advising me to steer clear. And now some hyperbole- If I had 30 rooves, I'd want Russ and Northstar to replace all of them when the time came. If I had to roof a dog house, a Barbie Dreamhouse, or the White House, I'd ask Russ to take a look first. If you need a roof, this is your guy, you don't need to waste your time anywhere else. I was very disappointed by the recent experience I had with North Star. I requested a de-mossing service which clearly is nothing near the cost of a new roof and I was pretty much dismissed. Where as when I needed a roof, they were extremely responsive and helpful. In my mind this is a poor reflection on the company, showing that it only cares to work with customers if it is a big job. Here we go again....gotta come back and give this company another five star review. We installed a new privacy fence and stairs off an existing deck. Called three companies for bids before I remembered that North Star does this! Thank god! Expensive home projects make me nervous because contractors can be so shady and you never know if you are on the same page. My mind was totally at ease after I called Russ and we started the project right away. All materials were quality (many neighbors have complimented the workmanship already) and the crew was polite and efficient. Even with my kids, neighbor kids, our pets, house guests and a foster dog running around the "work site" all day. We had some problem areas that called for creative solutions and I was not nickel and dimed and the crew was able to offer ideas that I had not even considered. They cleaned up all of their debris as they went. The end result is STUNNING. We may never go into our house again. I am very pleased that I decided to go with North Star. I had gotten 5 bids for my roof, and the North Star bid came in the lowest. That was not though, the final determinant in my decision. As other reviewers here have said, Russ is wonderful to work with. I had many questions about the process and he met with me until all of my questions were answered. I never at one point felt that I was being nickeled and dimed or trying to be sold something that I didn't really need. I believed Russ to be sincere in what he was telling me. I have no complaints at all about the roof. The work was done quickly, completed when it was supposed to be done, and looks great. The workers stayed late on a Friday to make sure that everything was completed, cleaned up, and we were satisfied. Time will of course tell more about the quality, but I have a 5 year warranty, so I trust that if there is any potential problem, it will be handled. The first company to give us a quote wanted to tear everything off our flat roof and build it back up again with the most expensive materials. Greg showed up the next day, inspected the roof, and said he'd recommend repairing a few of the weaker spots and putting a new pvc roof right over the top of it. No demo fees, no waste removal fees, no need for new insulation. This approach put their estimate in at less than half of what the other company wanted. The two guys working on our roof were polite, efficient and clean. Of course it rained halfway through the project, and they took every precaution to make sure nothing on the roof would get wet. The final bill was very close to the estimate, and the roof looks great. I definitely recommend North Star. read more
