We stopped by here to grab some ice cream because we had seen something about a ice cream doughnut sandwich. I got the crunchy caramel toffee, ice cream and chocolate. All the ice cream was delicious. We also got Tres leches in the doughnut, it was a bit too sweet for my taste. Overall, it was pretty good stuff. The service was quick and friendly and we loved sitting right outside on the patio while watching the pigeons and birds.
Out looking for a treat after some ice skating in Mesa! A few blocks away is Novel Ice Cream. It's something special for sure. Two handfuls of flavors to choose from. I chose Mocha Peppermint...delicious. One block from downtown Mesa not far from anything if you're looking for something sweet. After we finished our ice creams someone mentioned they also have donuts filled ice cream sandwiches...ahhhh! Next time for sure. Last words... special.
Ice cream! Donuts! Drinks! Great customer service! What's not to LOVE at Novel! Always a great time picking up a sweet treat at Novel Ice Cream in downtown Mesa. Bonus points that they are open late (midnight or 1am most nights). They serve 8 daily flavors and have 4 daily rotating flavors created in small batches so it's always fresh. You can choose cup, cone or Dough Melt which is a donut ice cream sandwich! Delicious! It's in a cute greenery covered alley with a few other shops as well. There are a few spots to sit and enjoy every wonderful bite.
Delicious and shockingly inexpensive! Even the location was quaint and unique! My eating companions and I enjoyed: single scoops of: chocolate, butter pecan, Cookie Monster, raspberry sorbet, and vanilla. Everyone loved their ice cream! I highly recommend the butter pecan it was nutty and so good!!!
After speaking with the owner Shawn after he reached out to me about my 3 star review, I've updated my review to one star. His defensive attitude shows my rushed, snobby experience was a reflection of leadership rather than an isolated incident. I entertained the text just to see what I could help with. Not expecting any refunds or an invite back because it wasnt just the service that I didn't like. The ice cream was underwhelming and "not worth the calories". I had no intention of returning unless there was a fundamental change in their recipe. The ice cream is bland and tastes of eating pure butterfat. Even a doughnut sandwich could not redeem the ice cream. I stand by my statement that you would be better off at Churn, Salt and Straw, or Handel's. Very disappointing experience, flavor, and ownership. His response to this publicly is further reflection. I refused to engage because he led off defensive. That is not how to treat a customer. His assertion that I have been misleading is appalling. It's mid ice cream. I implore customers to stay away or meet the same treatment on display. Serve the community at the highest level. This isn't the highest. I will add another screenshot of him asking for a phone call. I rejected the phone call because i could tell there was defensiveness from the beginning and he proved me right
Love love ice cream. This is literally a tiny hole in the wall shop. One tiny table outside to sit, but sitting on the street The chocolate ice cream was rich and a nice chocolate taste. It was not bitter What surprised me was the lemon bar ice cream. In the past I have found lemon ice cream to have a slightly curdled aftertaste this one did not. The lemon was light and refreshing The butter pecan was DELICIOUS. There was a good sprinkling of pecans.
They have eight Staple Ice Cream flavors: Bourbon Toffee Caramel Crunch Cookie Monster Madagascar Vanilla Chocolate Straight Up Strawberry Butter Pecan Honey Lavender PB Wasted They have some rotated flavors - Rotated Ice Creams (2) Rotated Sorbets (Dairy + GF) (2) The Bourbon Toffee Caramel Crunch is their best seller. I thought it had a good toffee and caramel flavor. The flavor wasn't weak here. With that, you know they have good ice cream. The honey lavender has a strong lavender flavor. Those who like floral flavors will like this one. The Thai ice tea flavor was good too, but there was something crunchy in it like an eggshell. I wasn't sure what it was. Otherwise, it had a nice strong flavor. Atmosphere - They hand you the ice cream out of a window. You order at a window. This all takes place in an alley. The weather could be hot, cold, just right, rainy, windy or sunny. It was getting busy in the alley. There was one table in the alley. Outside of the alley there were a couple of benches. Service - There were about three employees at the time. The service here was fairly quick. Order and pay at the window. Self seating only outside if you can find a spot. Parking - Surface parking lot. No parking meter or parking structures. Would be nice if there was a nearby parking structures or if there was covered parking with solar panels or trees. Unique - No seating. Is literally in an alley. Nice hole in the wall place. In the evenings I think it would be pretty there. Did not see a health rating on Yelp.
A very cute and convenient ice cream parlor. I love the concept of ordering from a window, which makes the whole process of ordering and paying very efficient. They are great with encouraging samples, and I suggest taking advantage because they have so many tasty flavors! We settled on the Cookie Monster Dough Melt and a scoop of the Straight Up Strawberry, and they were both soooo full refreshing. The workers here were also very friendly, which is always a plus for me.
We'd heard great things but weren't sure what to expect. We tried the Cookie Monster, as recommended by the staff. The donut was warm, soft, and absolutely delicious, and pairing it with the ice cream was chef's kiss. We savored every bite of this sweet indulgence. Plus, there's a charming little bookshop right next door, which made the visit even better! Highly recommend.
Finally got to try Novel Ice Cream! The place is super cute, i felt like i was by the Harry Potter street or something. Got to try their chocolate ice cream with chocolate sauce, and in terms of the ice cream, it was actually ok. I think places like Jenni's have more rich ice cream, but everyone has different preference!
Please never take away Honey Lavender. I never knew about this location! It's so cute and hidden. I love the lighting and walkway. I'm sad to hear they removed the waffle cookie. I loved getting them with my scoops of ice cream The flavors are so unique and true to their name. The honey lavender has lavender pieces and the strawberry rose sorbet has pieces of strawberries! I LOVE this place. There hasn't been a flavor of ice cream here that I've gotten that isn't delicious. The Dough Melt is a warmed up donut with ice cream and your choice of cereal, and the Leslie Knope is the same, but with a fresh made waffle. After trying both, I prefer the Dough Melt, but both are amazing. Honey Lavender, Cookie Monster, and Red Velvet are my favorite ice creams I've gotten so far. It's the cutest little breezeway walk up, and service is always super quick. So if there's a long line, don't worry, it moves fast, and you'll most likely see some cute pups over there while you wait. If you're in the area and looking for a sweet treat, this is the place! There's a good amount of seating outside the breezeway to hang out and chat with friends or a date as well. read more
What a cool ice cream spot in downtown Mesa! I love ice cream...like looooove it! This ice cream was top notch...very creamy, the flavor came through perfectly and had the right consistency and temperature (I don't know if that makes sense but it did to me). The store itself is tucked back down a long, well lit passageway...you could walk right by it and never knew it was there. You order at the window and walk back out the passageway to find a spot to indulge on your selection. There's plenty of seating outside. At night, there are stings of lights that add to the ambience. It's great for a date or with a group of friends. On a scale of 1 - 10, I found my new favorite ice cream spot :). You should check it out! read more

THE ice cream place for the great Phoenix area. Just as good as their downtown Phoenix store. The realest flavors you will try in ice cream. And they have rotating flavors that highlight unique takes on local flavors. The Bourbon Caramel Toffee Crunch is my all time favorite here. Highly recommend this local place! read more

Personally I don't get the hype. The dough melt was good but the donut over powers the flavor of the ice cream. There are very few choices for flavors and nothing I found intriguing. The prices were very reasonable and you can even do half of a single scoop for half the price for toddlers. Staff was very nice and the location is cute. I like ice cream with chunky mix ins instead of toppings. I wouldn't return due to personal preference. Edited: updating to 5 stars. Shawn the owner reached out and wanted me to give Novel another chance. I stopped by today to pick up a gift certificate and there were some yummy sounding flavors. I didn't want ice cream today but will return to use my gift certificates. Shawn is passionate about his business and has such a friendly crew. Thanks Shawn! read more

This place is such a cute little spot! I've been following on instagram for a while and finally got the chance to stop by! With plenty of flavors i chose to get bourbon caramel toffee crunch in the donut and it was delicious!! I also had a bite of the wumpa flavor from my friend is and was so refreshing on such a hot day! The Man at the window was super nice and let us try samples of things, great service! read more

Located down a cute building alleyway you will find one of Mesa's hidden treasures. Had no idea what to order and and the two girls behind the counter hooked us up with a cinnamon toast crunch dough melt. The mix between pillowy warm doughnut and luscious ice cream, with a crunch of extra sweetness definitely hit the spot. There are benches/ tables around to eat under the trees or walk around and explore Mesa. But don't skip on this hidden gem. read more

One of a kind artisanal ice cream and the location for this review is in downtown Mesa. My favorite flavor is the Cookie Monster which is the blue colored ice cream with delicate flavor with cookies blended in. It's highly enjoyable. They also will have 3-4 flavors as rotating. I have had the donut ice cream sandwich which is as good as it sounds although super rich and I feel guilty eating it after lol. Service is fine, they allow for flavor tastings which helps. Although they forgot to give us the mini stroopwafels. It is a very cute area kind of hidden in the downtown Mesa area. Pretty to walk around in with other stores in the area. read more

My first time visiting Novel I've Cream and it won't be my last! I ordered the Dough Melt donut with two scoops inside (Honey Lavender + Bourbon Caramel Toffee Crunch) and a topping (Golden Grahams). Unique and delicious! The staff were friendly and helpful; giving me suggestions for toppings that would pair well with my ice cream. 10/10 dessert spot in downtown Mesa, we loved Novel. Was introduced by a fellow Yelp Elite (s/o Tyler!) for a post-dinner treat. This location can be found down a small alley way off of Pepper Place and MacDonald, right across from the Museum of Natural History. I had a single scoop of the rotating flavor and my husband had a dough melt with Cookie Monster ice cream. Both were SO good. The dough melt was our favorite - the combination of the warm donut and the cold ice cream cannot be beat. Service was great! Friendly staff who walked us through the menu and gave us great recommendations. There's not a ton of seating but they do have a fenced off area right outside on the sidewalk. Overall great experience! We will be back! read more
This Novel Ice Cream location is a hidden gem in downtown Mesa. If you know where it is then you are in good company and if you don't then you could sadly easily miss some of the best ice cream around. Look for the Novel sign across the street from the Arizona Natural History Museum (the building with a giant Dino busting out of the side of it) and you will know you are close. Walk down a small corridor and you'll arrive at your cold treat destination. All the flavors are amazing that it makes it difficult to decided on just one scoop. There's even a ice cream flight option for those of us who can't decided on which one flavor to get. However, my go-to flavor is the honey lavender. I've never had anything quite like it anywhere else. It's a must try if you like the flavor combination and if that's not your thing, there are plenty of other flavors to try. I'm daydreaming just thinking about those scoops. Seems like another visit is in order soon! read more

It was an indulgent dream! The PB and Cookie Monster flavors were next-level -- the peanut butter added this deep, salty creaminess that perfectly balanced the Cookie Monster's sweet, nostalgic cookie chunks. The donut itself was pillowy and just slightly crisp on the outside, still warm, which made the contrast with the cold, creamy ice cream insanely satisfying. Every bite was this perfect mix of warm, cold, soft, chewy, and crunchy. Total flavor bomb -- I'd get it again in a heartbeat. read more

One of our favorite places to sneak out to! The flavors are limited but that's because what they do, they do WELL. I cannot recommend the honey lavender enough. It's creamy and thick, but not heavy, and the lavender lightens it up nicely. read more

This is the cutest little ice cream stand! It is tucked at the end of a cute little corridor in downtown Mesa. I've had this location bookmarked for a while and I finally had the chance to stop by. There were other people there as well and there were a few people sitting down at a table that is located right outside the corridor. The employee quickly greeted us and gave us the scoop. He let us know everything that we needed to know about the different kinds of ice creams they had. I opted for the butter pecan in a waffle cone and it was SO GOOD. The ice cream was very creamy, gooey, and had plenty of pecans. There was a ton of other flavors as well as some exclusive flavors. I will definitely be back again for some more! read more

I LOVE this place! I've been here about 3 times now, and each experience has been great! Novel Ice Cream is like a cute speakeasy for ice cream - without a password required ;) I love that it's open late (until 1am) so it's perfect for the late night cravings or a night cap after a night out! The workers there are always super friendly and more than happy to let you taste as many flavors as you want :) I always go for the Cookie Monster flavor, which is cream based and BLUE with lots of cookie pieces! It's delicious, definitely recommend it! My second favorite is the Honey Lavender - SO SO GOOD!! I just went there last night but can't wait to go again :) read more

Me and my family were in the Mesa area and I had read great things about Novel Ice Cream so we stopped by. You can easily miss the store front since it's down a little alley with a couple of other small stores. Parking is easy to find on the street. There is no indoor area here. You place your order at the window and grab a seat either at one of the small two person tables in the alley or at one of the bigger tables out front. Service was friendly and fast. The girl at the window took her time to explain the menu to us since we told her it was our first visit. My kids loved the sorbet and the very unique flavors. I shared the dough melt, which is a warm donut with your choice of ice cream and toppings, with my husband. It was delicious and definitely can be shared. Located inside an alley-like divot with a couple other businesses also. Sparse seating in the alleyway, but outside there's covered seating. Walk up window to order, and food comes out pretty quickly. Cute ice cream place with interesting flavors! Hibiscus sorbet - Pretty sure this is a limited flavor. Was light and refreshing, but not overly sweet. Perfect for a hot day (or everyday, in arizona) Honey lavender - On the sweeter side, but I really enjoyed the lavender flavor here. I don't know how I feel about the buds still being in the ice cream though, because I typically don't eat that. If you have texture issues this might not be the best flavor for you. Interested in seeing their new sorbet flavors and flavor rotation otherwise. We almost missed it walking in, but we'll be ready to try more flavors next time. read more

The sweet tooth is TOOTHIN' yall!! You know after some good Chinese, you need something sweet. We YELPED ourselves right on ovah to @Novelicecream and got ourselves a double shot of TOOTHIN' ! Who knew that blue ice cream in the middle of a donut was going to make us so happy? Lemme just say.. you need to Yelp yourself on ovah to get it. First time here and decided to get the strawberry ice cream in a waffle cone although I know they are more known for their donut sandwiches. Had a heavy lunch so didn't feel like downing a donut lol Tucked away in an alley in downtown Mesa. Cute little ambiance. No indoor shop, just a window to order at. The cashier did a good job of hyping up the award winning ice cream so when I finally got it I was like "oh...that's it?" Strawberry ice cream was flavorful with strawberry and was nice and creamy. I thought it was pretty good but not mind blowing, it's just ice cream after all. I would come again if I was in the area but not go out of my way to get it. read more
We are so happy we found this hidden gem in Downtown Mesa. We had to walk through an extremely cute hallway to the ice cream shop. We order the honey lavender and cookie monster. A warm donut with ice cream sandwiched in between is brilliant. Delicious, simple, hand held, and easy to consume. This Novel location is similar to the downtown one where it is a walk up window that is a little off the beaten path. 100% recommend. read more

What a charming place! We walked down this open corridor to find Novel at the right side on the end. It's a walk-up window, with the flavors and menu very easy to read. Service was polite and quick. They accepted my AMEX, which I loved. There are 2 seating benches in the corridor, and 1 table with 2 chairs. If you'll walk out of the corridor and into the main street, there are more seating areas and benches to enjoy your treats. Saw this place on Insta (of course) and had to drive to downtown Mesa to give it a try. Ambience: There is no inside. The outside is darling. It's down a cute little "alley." Plenty of seating just off the street. It was about 100 degrees outside when we went, but there is plenty of shade. Ice cream: Butter pecan is delicious. He has strawberry (on a donut).
