Took my oldest here for a brunch of sorts. It came recommended by a coworker as a "hippy-dippy, vegetarian" place. Given my daughter is vegetarian we were excited. The truth is there's not that much on the menu that meets the criteria. She chose a grilled cheese, cole slaw and fries. She stated she really just wanted the cole slaw. I had the chorizo skillet with two eggs over medium. The food came reasonably quick and the service was quick and kind of not overly personable. The fries were kinda average and the chorizo lacked the zing I was hoping for. The food was just good, not really great. There looked to be some better weekend specials but the menu on its own wasn't that eclectic. Maybe worth a other try. I'm giving it a generous 3.6 which rounds to 4. read more

When I was at the U we went here weekly. It has been a while. Located off of busy Broadway near the Eye Center, with a small mostly private lot, crudely signed with threats for neighboring business customers. Inside is the same old Northside. They changed out the tables and booths, and added more fake nostalgia signs for the wall, but otherwise the same. Employees are still great. Breakfast was still good. The food was pricey, and I got my bill and they are close to four and a half bucks for fountain soda pop. read more

Love Northside Grill! This is one of my favorite diners in Ann Arbor. I have pleasant memories of coming here over the years with friends. I really love the blueberry oat bran pancakes here. The omelettes are also very tasty. I usually like to ''make my own" where you can pick three or more ingredients out of a list to customize your own omelette. Sadly, after decades of coming to this restaurant, I will not be coming back. I have always enjoyed the food and the kitsch interior. I often came here after getting out of the hospital or having a hospital procedure--just a little celebration. The restaurant seems to be changing and today--the menu is now quite condensed--no more Huevos Rancheros, for instance--and missing other familiar items. The waitperson seemed disinterested in our table--he was polite, but did not refill water or coffee or provide the requested extra napkins, nor did he see that we needed to go containers--we went to the cash register to ask for them. The vegetarian chili was lackluster. One biscuit was full sized; the other was not. I still enjoy the decor. However, in recent years, there has been a proliferation of informational signs that intrude on the decor IMO. read more

I love going here! I tried the morning crab with turkey bacon and highly recommend! The Burton tower is also a classic that I recommend for your first time. Service is very quick. It's a local favorite so it gets busy on the weekend especially but the wait is usually not too long. Either way, I dont mind the wait! Finally got the chance to go here, and I'm glad I did! It gets very busy on weekends, so expect to wait a bit. However, they have a good wait system with a pager, which I appreciate a lot. I've always passed north side grill but never tried as my experience at dining at diner were that the foods are typically very heavy and greasy, and I don't always feel great afterwards. Notthside grill was an exception to this we ordered the Big Easy skillet which had fresh dusted veggies and protein. The mushroom and onions were just sauted to right level where it had a nice crunch and chew. Wanted to get a standard brunch, and this place was definitely on the radar for places to try. It was Sunday so we were anticipating for a crazy wait time, but fortunately, we only had to wait for 10-15 min. I love the cozy, no frills vibe this establishment had. We got the Huron Sampler, the potato pancake, and the Lowertown breakfast sandwich. The Huron sampler was an immense amount of food, and it was all delicious. I particularly enjoyed the corn beef hash and would come back just for that! The potato pancake is something that more establishments need on their menu as it's delicious. The pancake was well seasoned, and the pairing of apple sauce and sour cream sounds bizarre but was tasty for sure! Food here is always good but the owner (I assume he's the owner; any employee with his attitude would likely be fired) is rude and unpleasant. He treated our group today as if we were an inconvenience for him. He's always snippy, but today really took the cake. I guess business must be great because when we told him we would go elsewhere in the future because of his rude treatment of us, he clearly did not care. The wait staff is wonderful, I don't know how they can stand working for this guy. He is a jerk and does not deserve your business. I highly recommend going elsewhere. read more

We read all the great reviews but sadly it wasn't that great the day we went. Eggs were not cooked the way we ordered them and hash browns were hard and dried out. Pancakes were delicious however syrup was served cold (seemed like out of the fridge?) so we had to spread the syrup with our butter knives over the pancakes. Coffee was just ok but it's not gourmet and only 1 step above Folgers brand! They only have 1 unisex bathroom. Not worth the hype or what they charge! read more

Lived in Ann Arbor for many years always drove by this place for work finally decided to try it. Definitely a place that is supported by regulars and locals. They have interesting weekend specials that look good, we came on a Monday at 11pm and there were only two tables open. Based on this would not surprise me if there waiting times during the weekend. Absolutely loved my egg sausage sandwich, hash browns are good definitely get filled up for $12. Inflation is hitting these restaurants hard and for the current price you still get a decent value. My wife loved her crab melt sandwich that also included bacon, adding a little Clancy's hot sauce elevated the sandwich. Stopped in one Sunday morning during the holiday break and had a great visit. Typically this place can get pretty crowded but IDK if it was because folks were still out of town or something but we came right in and got a table. Got some plain pancakes, eggs and hashbrowns and my husband got an omelet and they were all delicious. Nothing crazy but it hit the spot! The pancakes were delightfully fluffy and filling. I also got a holiday latte which has cinnamon vanilla syrups and it was sweet and satisfying. They serve Roos Roast coffee which is my favorite local roastery so I'm always happy to get a beverage here. The place isn't fancy but the service is fantastic and the food is wonderful. I can hardly believe it's been five years since my last review of the Northside Grill. This long-time Tree Town favorite consistently finishes in the top tier of Ann Arbor breakfast spots and is known throughout the city for big portions of tasty food, strong coffee with frequent warmups and outstanding service. After an early morning tee time on this side of town, my wife and I chose to dine in Northside's outside covered patio that was constructed adjacent to the restaurant during the peak of the pandemic. My wife ordered the Vegetarian Omelette while I continued my recent attraction for skillets by choosing the Kitchen Sink Skillet while sipping Northside's Dark Roast. As I had hoped, our breakfasts were generously-sized, loaded with freshly sautéed veggies and a mozzarella-cheddar cheesy blend and had outstanding taste! But it was this morning's outstanding service pushed my rating up to a solid 5 star level. This morning the Northside Grill once again proved to me it belongs among A2's very best for breakfast. read more

Here's the thing. I think a lot of people in Ann Arbor give places like this place such high reviews because of where it's located and the longevity of its existence in the city. There wasn't anything remotely wrong with this place other than it's a typical diner serving breakfast and lunch until 3pm. We came here after kayaking in Argo Pond and sat in the covered patio on the side. The menu was pretty average if I'm being honest. Again: a pretty typical diner with diner food like skillets, omelets, etc. Both my husband and I ordered skillets and they were fine. Nothing *super* tasty and they weren't terrible either. Again: pretty average, typical diner food. I can't give this place 4 or 5 stars because for a place that is just typical diner food, our bill was somehow $40. FORTY DOLLARS for two plates of hashbrowns, some vegetables and eggs. And then some coffee. Oh I did get a slice of pie. Mmkay. The only thing that could even maybe make it seem like it's worth having Cafe Zola prices is that the bread wasn't just run-of-the-mill wheat toast. I wouldn't say that deems it the higher price. So unfortunately for us, while the food and service were absolutely great and delicious, the price just doesn't seem worth it since we can literally get the same thing at Leo's Coney Island for half the price. read more

I have been to this place in the past and it was really good, unfortunately that was not my experience today. Either they are under different management or just feel they have arrived and no longer needs to put out quality food and service. The service was absolutely terrible. I placed a take out order and was told to wait at the table inside by Jordan. While I waited, I ordered a cup of coffee and was drinking my coffee at the table. The restaurant was full, I had been waiting for 15 minutes for my take out and a group of four came in for a table. Jordan told them it would be about a 15 minute wait. One of the older guys working there heard Jordan tell them there was a wait and asked him why they couldn't be seated at my table. Jordan's response was because it's not available yet. The older guy said "Is he waiting for takeout?" He then rushes to the back to check on my food. I suppose he rushed it because the sausage links are not done and the box was all messy. So instead of allowing me to finish my coffee and wait for my food, he sends over the only black lady working in the restaurant to ask me to wait for my food outside on the porch in the cold and rain. She say we can turn the heater on for you. I'm a black man and the only black person in that building besides this employee. Guess he thought it would go over better by him sending her to ask me to go outside. By this time Jordan is bringing my food out to me in a hurry. Looking at my food, I noticed the box was covered with cheese and the sausages were not cooked completely. I expressed to the lady I didn't think it fair that I was asked to sit in the cold and wait for my food while I was drinking my coffee. She never apologized but was argumentative and cut me off and told me to listen to her. I was a paying customer and if I came in to just have a cup of coffee, would I not be able to drink it at the restaurant. Would I be made to take my coffee to-go? Please see pictures. Exceptional blueberry buttermilk pancakes! Please do not ever change the recipe. Eggs were cooked perfectly, too, along with fresh sausage and bacon, this place is a characteristic win-win! Accommodated a large party with ease (albeit a small wait, understandable, it's a pretty popular place), friendly and efficient service. Only thing I would suggest is a but more maple syrup for the upcharge, other than that, perfection! read more
