wanted to try out something new for breakfast with my wife but unfortunately i chose wrong. granted, the service was good and kind, the food was okay at best, but almost halfway through i noticed hair in my food. i still had more than half of my food left but my appetite was instantly gone. when i asked what could be done, i was only given 10% off, which is, to be fair, better than nothing. however, when most of my plate is full and that's how i intend on leaving it due to hair in it, which was stated, i believe 10% off is nowhere near good enough. as someone who works in the industry, 50% off would have been the absolute minimum i would do, but honestly i wouldn't have charged the customer at all for that plate, considering the problem at hand. i wont be returning but i hope others have a better experience here than i did. read more

Seems under staffed, the waitress who took my order did not bring my food, I was not greeted when I walked in the door, French toast tasted burnt. Had to add my own powdered sugar to my French toast which I found strange. I had to wipe the table off myself before sitting down. I've lived about a mile from this restaurant for years and just never got around to trying it out until recently. I like the name, and it looked like a nifty little diner from the outside. Inside, it's clean and neat but with that kitschy feel you want in a divey diner. I really wanted to like it better than I did, but the food was just mediocre. Positives: it's clean, it's got atmosphere, and the waitstaff are attentive. It's obvious that they have loyal regulars from the way they knew one customer wanted decaf coffee before she even sat down. I heard one of the waitresses talking with a little boy with a cast on his arm, and it was obvious he came in with his Dad on a weekly basis. They also do a nice job with separating the smoking from the non-smoking areas, and I smelled very little smoke during my visit. Another positive: prices are really great. There are a number of classic items like goulash and meatloaf sandwiches on the dinner menu, and they're inexpensive. Several lunch items are under $4, and many breakfast menu items are under $3.50. A half-order of biscuits and gravy or an egg and toast breakfast can both be had for around $2. Sadly, the food quality on a recent visit was just so-so. Skip the coffee. It's watery and tasteless. I ordered the farmer's omelet minus the ham, and while it was chock full of onions, potatoes and cheese, the hash browns were really hash whites. Undercooked hash browns are a major pet peeve of mine. There's a reason the word "brown" is in the name, and I really hate being served a lump of mostly white potato. The serving was huge and the toast that came with it was good. Overall, it was edible, but it wasn't the best diner breakfast I've had. read more

Big Sky is another one of those diners that I've missed over the last 8 years that I've lived in the neighborhood. Really, I couldn't be more happy with the breakfast that they served at Big Sky. I ordered the Fried Steak Skillet and it was wonderful. Eggs, hash browns, country fried steak, and sausage gravy over the top of it all. A real flavor treat. This may have actually been the first time that I was able to work my way through a country fried steak without running into lots of fat and grizzle. If you do happen to visit Big Sky, be wary of the fact that their breakfasts are huge, You will definitely end up packing some of it away for a snack later in the day. The coffee was real good and my cup was always full. Big Sky is clean and they have a great wait staff, the kind of people you remember from days past that address you as "hon" and "darling". Sometimes too huge. I'd rather pay less for less food, but your meal is definitely a good value. Go with a big appetite. As I said, the coffee is fine, a B+ on the diner scale. I've had better diner joe, but mostly I've had way worse. Next, the atmosphere - very neat, with a booth-filled non-smoking sunroom. Great spot to read the paper with your breakfast. There's ample seating in the smoking section, too. Finally, the service - The waitresses at this place are remarkably good. The woman who waited on us today was immediately attentive, got us our food fast, refilled beverages often and best of all, brought ketchup and hot sauce for our eggs before we could even ask! This place is as divey as divey gets. It looks like the castaways of restaurants long-gone, with sad pitted tables and cracked, worn-out booth upholstery. It reeks of industrial cleaner and mold, mostly the latter. The TV is constantly blaring the most garish of shows - TMZ, Maury, etc. It's a study in diner culture to the point of cartoonish hyperbole, as far as I'm concerned. However. The food is surprisingly pretty solid. Be careful about any lettuce you eat; it's always browned & looks like it's seen FAR better days. Other than that, it's not bad. It's dirt-cheap even by diner standards, so it's surprising that it's as good as it is. A simple burger hits the spot consistently, and every time I've gone in, I've gotten some random bit of free food. "Hey, we made this salad and forgot the customer didn't want tomatoes; want a free salad?" "Free pound cake on the house for you folks!" etc. And the staff there is an odd motley crew, but very friendly, pleasant & devoted to making sure you have a good visit. From the first time you step into the Big Sky Diner, you are immediately given the impression of 'local'. It's not the finest diner you'll see; it's well worn. There are 3 rows of booths, one of which we're brought to when we enter and another room full of tables behind us. The staff is friendly and seems to know most of the customers. I order one of the skillets, my wife orders the 'big breakfast'. The coffee is good and keeps coming. There's been drama here this morning as a customer caused the staff a bit of trouble; Officer Burt is in to make sure the staff are ok, and it's to gossip of the tables. My skillet is good. Nice thick, tasty sausage gravy, nice sausage patty, fried eggs, toast already buttered (one of those wonderful things about America!). My wife's breakfast is vast, like a little continent of food. It's too much for her to finish. Her sausage is a little tough and she finds the gravy too thick, she's more of the connoisseur of sausage gravy than I am, so she knows what she's talking about. Her biscuits are flakey and light. The toilets are by far not the finest you'll ever see, but I didn't expect pristine! I used to be a big fan of BSD, but lately the quality of the food has been inconsistent. On some days it is outstanding, and on others it is just eh. The daily specials seem to be the most constantly good. Big points for the homemade mashed potatoes and homemade entrées. I came across this place on a Livejournal entry with my roommate - and we tried it one morning for breakfast. It's about five miles from us, and open 24 hours - always a plus when you're a third-shifter. When we went in and tried it the first time, we did breakfast. Keep in mind, this is a place that is out of the way, a bit of a dive, and a little run-down in parts. We're not talking about the greatest section of Ypsi here. But the place is full every morning for breakfast, and that ought to be a good sign. The waitstaff is pleasant, attentive, and friendly, and after only a couple of visits began to figure us out. Their cooks often make a note of you and remember how you like things done if you come in often enough. I love my bacon crispy and crunchy - not floppy as you get in most breakfast places - and after being told only once, the bacon I'd get in breakfasts was never floppy, ever. Absolutely awesome. The prices can't be beat either. Although they only recently raised them, they only went up about $1 per meal, which given the economy, I can't fault them. The corned beef hash & eggs is still a great deal, and you can't beat the $2.99 breakfast special (get there before 11 AM). Only downside is that the waitstaff is small, so if they're swamped, service might suffer a bit. But they go out of their way to try to make your experience a good one. Other pluses: The soups are homemade; the chicken dumpling soup is absolutely incredible. My roommate, who's allergic to celery, eats the soup despite the fact that it has celery in it just because it's so good. One reason I'd have to say I really love the resturaunt is because I live only walking distance to it. The service is great, and it's everything you would expect from a casual diner. The food is quite cheap, and definitely meets up to my expectations. The smoking and non-smoking sections are divided nicely, and personally I really like the fact that almost every seat is a booth. The only thing I'd have to say is a downside is that when the resturaunt is really crowded, the food sometimes isn't cooked as desired. But almost every time it's perfect! No doubt, it's as divey as it ever gets. Good hole-in-the-wall diner. Torn blue vinyl seats; brown Formica tables. Local seniors hanging out midday drinking coffee and discussing world affairs in a way only old men can do. Had the Wednesday Special of Beef Stroganoff. Came with Chicken Dumpling soup. The soup was hot, thick and home made. My gravelly voiced server was sweet, attentive and gave as good as she got from the old guys. Soup, though a bit bland, was loaded with dumplings and chunks of chicken and celery. Perfect comfort food for the rainy day we were experiencing. Beef Stroganoff was exactly what you'd expect. A creamy sauce generously slathered over multiple chunks of beef setting on an abundant bed of noodles. The Stroganoff was adequate cooked, had sufficient seasonings, and good flavor. If you're looking for good comfort food at a very reasonable price, Big Sky Diner is the place to go!! My entire meal with coffee was only $8.95. Definitely an enjoyable dining experience. read more

This is small little place compared to what I am used to, but I haven't gotten service like that in a very long time.
