The service was friendly but the girls hardly speak english and they do not understand what you order. Horrible! We ordered the miso soup which was not very warm. Avocado salad was ok but about half of an avocado with sauce for 6$... We ordered two rolls and sashimi. We got the sashimi and one of the rolls. I did not want to believe how tiny those rolls were, almost like a sample, 8 of them.. i did not like it tho, had no flavor, after I asked about my tempura roll, which we still was waiting for and after this the waitress girl gave us the check. Nori was our second choice for dinner in Montclair on Saturday night, but from now on, it's going to be my first! We made the short walk to Nori after we found there was a 90+ min wait at that *other* popular restaurant on Bloomfield Ave. It's all good; we were craving sushi anyway and I was looking forward to trying a new place. No wait! Thank goodness. The restaurant was busy, but not crowded. We were seated immediately at a cozy "booth" table near the side windows. Our waiter brought us waters & 4 wine glasses for our obnoxiously oversized bottle of wine (BYOB!). The menu is, in a word, outstanding. There are two pages jam-packed with really creative, fun, and interesting specialty rolls. On other pages, there are sushi/sashimi specials, vegetarian options, & bento boxes. So much to choose from! I finally settled on two rolls: Donkey Kong and #1. Let me just get this out of the way: THE DONKEY KONG ROLL IS EVERYTHING. It first caught my eye as a hilariously named specialty roll, but then I read the description: Shrimp Tempura roll with a Fried Banana on top? How could I not try it? It literally changed my life. I didn't even know you could put a fried banana on top of a sushi roll -- but Nori did, and it WORKS. The shrimp tempura was perfect, the roll was fresh & lovely, and the fried banana added another layer of crunchy/caramelized/sweet. When I finished it, I wanted another one IMMEDIATELY, but I resisted because I didn't want to turn into a sushi roll (a la Violet Beauregarde). But seriously, I highly recommend you try this roll! It's a little out there as far as sushi goes, but it's sooooo worth it. The #1 roll was also very good, and I would be singing its praises if I wasn't so in love with the Donkey Kong roll. The #1 has salmon, avocado, asparagus, cucumber, & tri-color tobiko (which I had to look up - no shame - to learn it's just flying fish roe). The #1 was very tasty! The salmon was fresh & the veggies had a nice fresh crunch to them. I really enjoyed this roll too! My two rolls came out to $30. There was no BYOB/corkage fee either, so yay! Our bill for 4 people was just under $100, which is more than reasonable for a sushi dinner. In the back, there's even a really cool private room with one of those low tables where everyone kneels on those low pillows. I'd love to try that! And so, while I definitely plan on returning, and I have every intention of bringing my friends & my fiance next time, Nori only gets four stars. Why? The service was a bit slow (we were starving), and the group behind us was particularly loud & obnoxious. Perhaps they brought a little too much BYOB? They knocked into the partition behind me more than once, and I think the entire restaurant breathed a sigh of relief when they paid their bill & left. Hopefully my next visit will inspire an updated review! I'm so glad we found each other, Nori! Let's never part. Until next time -- and save me a couple of fried bananas please! read more

I'll strongly preface this review by saying I'm no sushi connoiseur. If I eat it twice a year, that's probably a stretch. So, take my opinion with a grain of salt. Service was friendly and prompt but I was not too impressed with the sushi. Neither the tuna roll nor the sashimi tasted all that fresh and some of the rice was overcooked. I wrote a glowing review about a year ago. I went two times after that review and it was mediocre at best both times, but I like to give a place that used to be consistently good a chance to recover. Eat in - service slow and there were only two other tables. Take out: HORRIBLE. Ordered beef negimaki and it was like shoe leather. I understand beef may not be their specialty, but most Japanese restaurants can make it pretty well. Today: I will never go back! If I wanted airplane food I would book a flight on Continental in order to get crappy airplane food. Ordered a lunch special which is usually when I go. Opted to try something new and went for the Hibachi Salmon. The girl said it was grilled and came with vegetables on the side. She mentioned a bunch of different vegetables. What she didn't mention is that you get 3 slivers of carrots, 3 small pieces of zucchini, 1/2 pound of mushrooms and another 1/2 pound of almost raw onions. I'm sure this is fine if you happen to like mushrooms and onions, but I don't. I can work around them when needed but this was absurd. The photo is what was left after the sliver of salmon, tiny pieces of carrot and zucchini and some noodles. The salmon tasted like it was boiled and it looked it also. It was mostly grey with small touches of pink and has a rubbery skin attached underneath so I didn't find it right away. There was nothing "grilled" about this boiled mess. The noodles taste grilled which confused the hell out of me. Price went up from the menu I just got from them less than 3 months ago so I paid $10.70 for a piece of boiled salmon the size of Twix bar and a shitload of mushrooms and onions. If I ate a piece of salmon that tasted halfway decent, I wouldn't be so pissed. But to waste that kind of money for lunch and have it almost inedible is not what I wanted to do today. I'm a pretty good cook so for me to try to add a bit of teriyaki sauce and fresh lemon just to make something a restaurant SHOULD HAVE PREPARED edible was irritating. One reviewer said they "stopped trying". I agree with that and would like to add "they stopped cooking" also. Absolutely done with this place. read more

I hate to write bad reviews these days, but our sushi was mostly inedible. We got a large array of sushi, soups, gyoza, and negimaki. The gyoza was decent, as were the miso soup and salmon sushi. The rest was just terrible! Scallop, tuna, white tuna, red snapper, and a special roll were all watery - as though the fish was frozen for a long time. Negimaki was too tough to eat. The prices for nigiri and sashimi are slightly higher than what we're used to paying in San Francisco, but still moderate. I had a lunch combo so that was a great deal! $12.95 got me two rolls, soup, salad, and appetizer. The decor was cute, not overly done. The service was friendly. The menu was vast...lotsa creative rolls. The food was pretty good, so far. I didn't order any sashimi or nigiri. DONT ORDER FROM HERE. this place is a scam. i ordered on door dash and the menu picture showed that i would be getting 12 pieces of california roll sushi for the price $6. however, i only got 6 when my food arrived. it did not specify anywhere else (including the online menu on the website) that i would only get 6 pieces for $6. in addition to that, the butterfly rolls order showed that i would be getting 14 rolls for $11.50, but when it arrived i only got 8. the sushi look nothing like the pictures, by the way. i honestly would let this incident slide and wouldn't have left this review, but when i called the restaurant for further clarification, i was treated terribly by the front receptionist who answered my call, Jenny. the customer service is the worst i've honestly seen, ever. she gave me so much attitude and snark, and she lied to me about the menu as well. she said that if i wanted to see how much sushi i was gonna get if i ordered through door dash, i should've also looked on their online menu on their website to check how much sushi is in each order. which is ridiculous anyways, because u cannot expect a new customer to who's ordering through doordash (which is telling them one thing) to also go on their website to double check. in addition , the website never even tells u how much sushi ur getting in one order, so that was a lie. so not only did nori sushi's doordash menu do false advertisement by promising more sushi than what customers actually got, but they provided no way for me to verify that information and their customer service lied to me about that. read more

My fiancé took me here for my bday and I love this place. It was my first time here and it was a quiet Wednesday night. The ambiance is a bit dark but the staff was extremely friendly. My fiancé and I ordered a sushi boat, which included sushi and sashimi for around $50-60, which I thought was great considering the amount of sushi you get. I'm very picky about my sushi but I'm always willing to try something once. The reason for my giving this place a 4 star was because the sashimi looked a bit dry. The fish on top didn't look as fresh as I would've liked, making me a little bit skeptic to eat the sashimi. One upside to this place is that it's BYOB. Those who are looking for a more intimate place in the Montclair area should try this place out. The prices were decent and the staff was fast. I had to try their sushi pizza $13 which is close to a scallion pancake with pierces of tuna/salmon/crab meat on top with seaweed salad, also ordered a eel and avocado roll $6.50 and orders their garlic spider crab $15 which comes with these amazing sauces. Loved the M16/ Verona & Krazy roles, they were all delicious!! We even asked to alter a few things in the roles (which always makes you popular w/ wait staff) & they didn't hiccup!!! I should say, it's possible someone is baby sitting as it's generally quiet and I can work if needed. I was really confused when my food came, but the woman said that's what I ordered, so I dropped it. I'd rather focus on my company and not stress over what I did or didn't say. For $18, what I got was disappointing. It tasted just like the teriyaki that you can get in the food court at the mall. The two soups we got were room temperature and flavorless, and the salad was very average. The edamame appetizer lacked salt. To sum it up, I won't return. read more
