We've rented from Hengehold twice for Burning Man, 2024 (15' box truck) and 2025 (24' box truck)…read more We've had bad experiences with other rental companies in the past (U-Haul, Enterprise, you name it) so we wanted to go with a local company that seemed to invest a lot in a great customer experience. The first time had no issues. The second time, the truck failed on us Friday night [more details are below], and we had to get a last-minute rental from Enterprise, while also locating a parking lot where we could leave the faulty truck. Hengehold was not reachable because they are not open on the weekends. Then, we had to spend time/energy unloading and reloading a new truck, and a friend had to stick around on Monday to eventually get that truck towed. Hengehold refunded us the full amount. Knowing the Burning Man general schedule (which is the same every year), and as a business that must draw in a ton of revenue from the event, I'm surprised that they are not open on that Saturday/Sunday to help with these issues and provide replacements. I'm leaving 2 stars here (instead of 1) because their customer service (when they're open) has been easy to talk to and work with (including the refund part), and because we still had a positive experience the first time. We will still consider renting with them in the future. ================== More details on the second time --- We drove the truck from Palo Alto to San Francisco on Friday, and spent the day loading in our supplies. We drove the truck out that night from SF headed towards Reno, and within 1 mile it started malfunctioning. The dash said there was an SCR malfunction (see picture) & the truck started beeping. We called a technician (not affiliated with Hengehold, since it was out of hours) who spent an hour with us running tests and said there was a clogged DEF catalytic converter. He hypothesized that possibly 1) just over time they wear down or 2) bad DEF in there that caused it to happen faster than normal timeline. He said there would be large overhaul of the system needed and that it was not fixable over night. "It's absolutely not getting to Reno". When we started driving again it wouldn't go more than 2 mph.

I have purchased two vehicles from these guys, both dump trucks. My first vehicle was a former PGE…read moretruck and had an electric hoist and a PTO driven air compressor. I dearly loved this truck but my Orinda neighbors voted it off the island. AAT had redone the truck box and it was new and impressive. My next truck was smaller and was a pickup truck that had previously been converted to a dual ram dump using the existing truck body. The AAT guys were a little dismissive of this truck as it was the smallest one on their lot. However, it works for me perfectly. AAT made sure to caution mme to use 10 ply tires, which hold 80 PSI, and as a result, I can hold about 3,000 pounds in the current truck. These guys are super helpful. Highly recommend them. And by the way, I have been there several times and have not been accosted by a dog. They're not in a great neighborhood, but the lot itself is safe. Hope this helps. If you go to the dump as often as I do, you really should go see AAT about a dump truck. You won't go back!

From the sales person to the finance person. We were recommended by a previous employee who no longer works here. He advised us we would be in good hands. Sales person knew nothing about the truck. When asked questions in regards to process etc. he didn't know. His response is always "we are busy". You're busy because of customers like us coming here. However the lack of attention to details and poor communication has made this process not a great one. Everyone PLEASE pay attention to what they request and want. Non disclosure on lots of items. Such as the financing part of it. You put a down payment and they add on extra fees in addition to what you're paying. As an example your truck is 100k down payment is 50k you will have to still pay on the 50k in addition to another 50k. Technically you're paying 150 for your truck. Will never recommend this place to anyone!
