He told me he was too busy for a drop-in but to make an appointment for the next day at 10am. He doesn't have photos on file but he'll pull the rugs I want to see. On the day of the appointment, I call ahead of schedule, once again greeted by Alfredo and he again tells me he's very busy, too busy for this, but go to the store and see the rugs. What he lacks in charm I hoped Alfredo would make up for with product. Well upon arriving at the lockup, he hadn't pulled the rugs and the young man that works for him clearly wasn't expecting me. The fact is that Alfredo is quick to highlight how busy he is and yet somehow can be completely dismissive of how valuable your own time is. This is the story not of a rug, but of a hero. Occasionally the two can be one and the same (like when you fall down in your house and the rug softens the blow), but for me today a rug could not have pulled me out of the depths of despair I was experiencing. Only Alfredo could have. Let's backup. I was running some errands today in good ol Pasadena before my daily swim at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. As I was driving toward the pool, I heard something dragging beneath my car. I was disturbed, hoping that I wasn't dragging some animal or plastic bag or some combo of the two. I pulled over at the first meter I could and scanned the underbelly of my 2014 Jetta Hybrid. No animal thank god. Arguably worse. The protector piece underneath my bumper had come loose and was dragging beneath my car. Anxious thoughts poured through my head... would i have to go to Glendale to the VW dealership to fix this, thereby abandoning my whole afternoon? The truth is, this had happened before on my 2014 Jetta Hybrid which is a garbage ride despite looking cute. The whole thing is made of plastic! Nightmare. Anyway, I looked up from under my car and scanned my surroundings, parked right in front of Norbert's. I figured I'd grab some tape to tape the piece back to my bumper so that I could take it to the shop without doing more damage. The thought tormented me, driving around town with duct tape holding my car together. But that felt appropriate for my life in general right now so I gulped up my pride and soldiered on, right into Norbert's. Two men were folding up a (very nice looking!) rug and I think they were shocked at the sight of me...pathetic, wild-eyed little me begging for duct tape like Oliver Twist. They handed me a roll and left me to my business outside. I was grunting and taping away, trying to get the piece to stick when from behind me I heard a voice. The voice of an angel, an angel named Alfredo. "Let me help you," he offered. I wasn't going to say no to that but before I could even reply he was already playing around with the piece and putting it back on the car, sans duct tape. He managed to save me a trip to the dreaded VW dealer and knew that a stylish hot mess like me couldn't be seen driving around in a beat up duct taped 2014 Jetta Hybrid. We had an incredibly experience with this company, especially with Alfredo. After visiting the store a second time, Alfredo let us know we could "audition" rugs at home - initially he brought over four rugs (two we had chosen and two he had chosen based on photos I had sent him of our living room). When we couldn't agree on any of them, we did a second round of even MORE rugs and he and his team had a great sense of humor with all our indecisiveness. He let us keep the second round for almost a week while we tried out different rugs each day (I know, I'm the worst), and then when we finally decided, they lugged all the other ones home.
