I don't write many reviews but the service I received at Pasadena Oriental Rug was so offensive I felt the need to write this as a warning to others considering bringing their business here. My family and I are survivors of the Eaton fire which has been an extremely traumatic experience and are in the process of cleaning our home so we can move back in again. I took in a prized family rug that survived the fire but had some light old wear damage around the edges to be repaired and received the most horrific, offensive treatment by the shop's owner Andy G that I've ever received at any business in my life. As we were discussing how to repair the rug he kept telling me he wanted to remove several inches from all sides of the rug when it was obvious only an inch or less could be removed so that more of the rug area could be saved. When I told him repeatedly I wanted to remove as little of the rug edges as possible, he got very angry and told me, "we are busy people here, if you don't like it you can take your rug and get out, I don't want your business here!" I was in total shock at his response to my questions and asked him to please roll my rug back up so I could leave with it and he told me that I had to roll my own rug back up and that he wouldn't help me with it. The rug was too big for me to deal with on my own so I had to get a family member to come inside and help me roll it up and carry it to my car even though the owner Andy G and his two adult sons were standing around me watching instead of helping me. While I was doing this, Andy, the owner kept yelling at me "roll it up and get out now!" in a very angry tone. As I was walking out of Andy's shop with my rug I told him I was shocked that an old family run business would treat people who were trying to keep their money in Pasadena by taking our business to him would treat potential customers so badly and he told me, "I don't care about your business, F*$# YOU!" right in front of my young son who was struggling to help me carry my huge rug out. Yes you read that right, Andy G, the owner of Pasadena Oriental Rug told me "FU!" right in front of my young son. As I got out the front door I told him I'd definitely be writing a Yelp review of his business to warn other people about his treatment and he yelled at me "I don't give a s*%$ about Yelp, F*$# YOU!" again, right in front of my young son. Please think twice about supporting this man with your business. He does not deserve the support of the Pasadena community, especially at a time of crisis like this where everyone has been coming together to help one another as we get through this horrible tragedy together. read more

This was a disaster, and I admit that part of it was my fault. I'm in Altadena, post fires, and wanted to have my 10 or so area rugs cleaned. One thing led to another, repairs, etc and somehow I spent $12,000 on this. There were so many upcharges, so many repairs, and I was in a rather vulnerable state given what was going on with the fires. So yes, part of this is my fault for not fighting back. But I felt totally taken advantage of. I do not recommend this provider. On dropping off two small rugs simply for a cleaning, they up-charged for rug pads and edging that I don't ask for yet they insisted on. Ultimately - $1200 to clean 2 small rugs (roughly 5x7 or smaller). I'm not sure these rugs are worth even half that price: absurd. read more

I used the services of this shop twice: the first to clean and repair a handmade Persian carpet, which had some moth damage. The repair went well and I had no complaints. The second time, I wanted to appraise two other Persian carpets that I was planning to sell. When I started to explain what I wanted to do on the phone, the owner interrupted me to say that they were not interested in buying. I explained that I just wanted an opinion on the value of the carpets. He offered an oral appraisal at $25 per carpet, to which I acquiesced. When I brought in the carpets, the owner complained that there was moth damage (which is correct). Having paid him the fee (in cash, at his insistence), he proceeded to give me a very abbreviated opinion without even unrolling the carpets, saying that he did not want his carpets contaminated. Interestingly enough, there was no complaint the first time I brought my rug for cleaning. All in all, while I do not dispute the expertise of the shop, I felt that I was cheated out of my money, and treated rudely and condescendingly to boot. I will never bring another rug to this shop for any reason, nor will I recommend the shop. I see from some of the other comments that I was not the only customer to be treated in this way. read more

After her passing, it was accidentally put in the garage consequently cat hair and debris spotted the carpet and I thought it would not come out but low and behold it did. They did a fantastic job. My hand-knotted rugs hadn't been cleaned since I moved, several years ago. And the carpet pads were shot. When Andy and his son arrived, he advised me that the fringe needed to be unglued and assured me that he would have no trouble getting rid of the stains (mostly of unknown origin). Ten days later, he brought the rugs back, rolled out the pads, positioned the rugs, and even gave me some home decorating advice (i.e., if a rug in one room runs vertically, the rug in the connected room next to it should also run vertically). Having lived in Pasadena since 1976, I had passed Pasadena Oriental Rug many times over the years. We decided to have our two 8 X 11 foot throw rugs cleaned and called to get an estimate. The owner came out and agreed to clean both carpets for $400.00 each. He saw our wool Persian rug in our dinning room and wanted to take that as well and clean it for $400.00 as well. I said no, not now...... The following week, he returned our two cleaned carpets to us on a Thursday. When he did, I had him pick up our Persian rug to clean at $400.00. He convinced me that I needed a pad for the Persian rug. The rug had fringe tassels on both ends, which I requested that he remove. He said that he would do the entire job for $1,500.00 and I agreed. On that Saturday I unrolled the two cleaned carpets and laid them. As you can see by the photos, both carpets are badly misshapen. All the edges are no longer straight and look terrible. I was so bothered that he would ruin my Persian rug as well, that I called his listed number at 3:00 AM on that Sunday morning to leave a message to stop all work and do not clean my carpet. He answered the phone as it was his residence and I told him to stop all work and he agreed that he would. I had my wife call him that Monday to confirm that we wanted all work stopped. He told her that he had already started work on the carpet and it was already cleaned........ Funny that he was able to clean that carpet in one day! So today 8 days later, he returned my Persian rug and I was prepared to pay him $400.00 as agreed for cleaning it. He said no, that I owed him $1,300,00. he said that he had repaired the edges for moth damage and removed the fringe (I could have removed the fringe myself with a pair of scissors in 15 minutes)! When I reminded him that I had talked to him on that Sunday morning at 3:00 AM to stop all work, he responded that my wife had okayed the work, which was a lie............. When I showed him the other two misshapen carpets he said that it was normal for that to happen.......... Why didn't he tell me that before he cleaned them? I did not confront him and paid him the $1,300.00. I blame myself for assuming that because someone has been in business for along time, does not guarantee honest, ethical and professional service. He was able to identify exactly what my rug was (a rare Caucasian all-wool Kilim) and what it needed; he found moths and was able to clean them out, rewove the frayed ends and repaired interior stitching, and basically made this neglected rug absolutely stunning again. I sent two area rugs to be cleaned. They were filthy and I expected to pay a lot. I have no complaint with the cleaning of the rugs. I also wanted the fringe removed. I was persuaded to also redo the edging on the sides of each rug. I am very dissatisfied with that part of the job. The binding is not very substantial and there are ragged threads hanging over it. The old binding had some heft, this does not. There is essential no barrier between the edge and the pattern of the rug. When I tried to discuss my concerns with the hitherto nice men who delivered the rugs, the senior became hostile and told me I was wrong. Then he tried to charge me twice the price he had quoted over the phone for the edging. He yelled at me never to come back to his company. I would not, nor would I recommend it to anyone. He lied to me on multiple occasions during our brief interactions. Based on my experience, you will have a terrific experience if you just say "yes" to anything he asks or mentions you might need - new pads, repairs for alleged moth damage, and the list goes on..... What was most interesting to me was how he transformed into a mean and downright spiteful person when I changed my mind on some of the services we had originally discussed. Oh what a great rug cleaning service! They are top notch! We have had three (3) wool rugs cleaned, the pads replaced and they repaired one that had begun to fray. Their prices were fair, especially when you take into consideration that they don't use harsh cleaners, but old fashioned hard work. Unlike when we would have a carpet cleaner come to clean, the spots and stains of wine and the accidents from a young puppy are gone! They got the stains out from the bottom up! Andy and his crew were able to get our rugs good as new! The turnaround of service was very timely! They even picked the rugs up and delivered them! I didn't read the reviews before I went to Pasadena Oriental Rug. Thank goodness I didn't. I have visited several rug stores in the area and they were nothing but con artists and outright lairs. Andy took great care of me. Explained how he will wash my very old and ornate rugs so they dont get damaged or ruined. I took in a favorite rug of mine which needed repairs. It has more sentimental value than dollar value. Andy told me the cost of repairs would be more than the value of the rug. What an honest man. Other shops would have not said a word and probably charged me double. If you're looking for professionals THIS PLACE IS IT. They are a great family owned and operated shop with a TON on knowledge. I recently inherited several antique oriental rugs, all of which needed to be cleaned and repaired from decades of neglect. I have driven by the impressive rig at Pasadena Oriental Rug that is visible from Allen Avenue several times, and thought I would give them a try. The rugs were too big for me to bring to the store, so Andy Gabrielyan, the owner, came by personally to make an assessment. He invited me back to the store, and I received an education on oriental rugs. Mr. Gabrielyan is quite a teacher! He showed me books with examples of designs that were nearly identical to some of my rugs. I found out what countries they were from, their approximate age, if they were handmade or machine made, and what their value was in relation to the country, age and the quality of handy work. I never felt that he was being pushy, but rather got the sense that Mr. Gabrielyan is passionate about his work and wants clients and potential clients to understand how privileged they are to own such beautiful pieces, especially if they are heirlooms, as mine are. While there I was invited back to the workshop and saw a rug that was in the process of being fixed. It had been so severely damaged that it needed a whole new 12" x 18" patch that was being carefully hand painted and dyed to match the original design. The workmanship, done by Andy's wife, was beautiful and the owner of that rug should be very pleased. At this point, I felt that no matter what the cost, the rugs would be in very capable hands, and I was not disappointed. Soon after the work began, I was driving by and noticed that some of my rugs were drying on the rack. I stopped to see the progress and one of the rugs was already dry and on the ground, ready to be moth proofed and wrapped. I was completely stunned at the vibrancy of the colors and the quality of the repairs. The rugs are between 75 to 95 years old and I don't remember ever seeing the rugs look so brilliant and gorgeous. I am thrilled with the outcome and it was worth every penny. The increase in value of the rugs more than made up for the cost. I would highly recommend Pasadena Oriental Rug Company. This is the best rug shop. Period. I had my great-grandfathers rug cleaned and repaired here, and it looks brand new. An entire corner was gone before, and now you can't tell which one it was. Not only do they have beautiful for rugs for sale, they have the knowledge and heart to care for your family heirloom rugs. It's in their blood! It's a third generation family business. Oh man. This was not a good experience. He changed prices multiple times, was extremely pushy, lacked basic communication skills, and generally made me feel extremely uncomfortable. He was rude, belligerent, and seemed intent on extracting as much money as possible from me. I will never go back. The rug is rolled up, and I hope that he did a good job cleaning it, but to be honest I don't think dealing with him is worth it even if you do get a clean rug back. His grandchildren are very sweet who work with him - he is just a very rude person who comes off as dishonest. I had the absolute worst taste in my mouth after my last interaction with him where he tried to uncharge us for no reason at all. Its sad, because I'm actually shopping for a large rug, and would have been interested in looking at what he sells, but dealing with him for one more minute is not worth it. Avoid. I really must say that my experience with Pasadena Oriental Rug has been great! I have used their service many times and have no complaints whatsoever. Iv'e taken rugs that were as dirty as they can be as well as rugs that have had damage and I must say that their work is very clean and Precise. The owner as well as the workers there have been very kind to me and my family throughout the years of doing business with them. There's a reason they were on the LA Times because they have been recognized for their hard work and customer service! It's very unfortunate that there are ratings here with only one star which amazes me because it makes no sense given that I've been a customer for so long and have never had one complaint. People always try to find a way to bash on the service and the employees, but my advise is...don't always believe what you hear. In August I called this business to inquire about the cost of having a 8'x10' rug cleaned. I was told it would be approximately $170-$210 . I set up an appointment to have my rug picked up. The owner came on 19 August. He walked into our house and exclaimed how expensive our rug was, that it was from Tibet and was worth an estimated $5,000. He went on to say it had pet stains and that it was full of moths and needed special cleaning and repair. He also said the rug pad was no longer useable. He gave a price for cleaning and repair of $818. We were shocked. He did this all so quickly, had his helper carry out the rug and rug pad before I could really see what he was talking about. He had me sign the order form, said to would take ten days to clean and repair, and left quickly. We felt a bit intimidated by him. My husband and I talked it over and decided we did not want to spend the money the owner was charging. We had purchased the rug at Home Depot and paid about $1,500 for it. We did not feel it was worth it to pay more than half it's price to get it cleaned, especially since half of the rug was faded. I called the next day and told him that we wanted our rug back. I told him that we did not think the $800 was a reasonable price to pay to have our rug cleaned. He said it was too late...that they had already cleaned it and were now starting on the repairs! It had not even been 24 hrs.! I told him his price was not reasonable, let him know where we had purchased the rug and for how much, and that I thought he was not telling us the truth about the rugs value. He became very belligerent and rude - I could scarcely get a word in. He called me a liar and that he was the one who knew about rugs. He yelled at me for questioning his comments. He said that if I did not pay the $800 he would keep my rug. And he did!! I'm so sorry that I had not checked the Yelp reviews before calling this business. I did, once this happened. I told him that everyone that has written had a similar experience as me. He said he didn't care about the people who wrote reviews, that they were just jealous. My experience was so terrible it took me awhile to calm down enough to be able to write this review. I hope people don't make the mistake I did. Absolutely awful! I would give it negative 5 stars if I could. This place is a complete rip off and does poor work. I had my grandmother's hand hooked antique rug cleaned here. The owner convinced me that he could also repair all of the thread bare spots on the rug to preserve it. I love this rug, so I agreed. I spent $2000 dollars doing this, and after exactly one year, it is all unraveling and coming apart. There are now holes in the rug where his people did the repair work. I called and told the owner what had happened, and he was so rude and obnoxious I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He said that was normal wear and tear, and should be expected after a year. He refused to fix it and said he could care less. Stay far far away! This man is a crook. read more

I will never use this company again....GO ELSEWHERE I've useD them twice...and the first time was perfectly fine. So although the 5 star review is possible....me thinks it may be fake..... Sadly though, I found out like others below, that if you call anything into question no matter how nicely you do it, Andy becomes a complete ASS! If you dare question the bill, the finish work, quality, Andy will first deny it, claim it was caused by someone else or thing, and then take offense. He is an ASS! As I said my first visit was fine.....I took in 3 hall runners each measuring 16 sq ft. and ea. costing $40 to clean for a total of 120.00, which is based on his standard price of 2.50 ft. About 11 months later, we took all back in again plus one more. this time my wife took them in....and you can probably guess what happened next....He charged my wife $75 ea., and in advance...wtf? So when I find out the next day, I go up and speak with his wife to question why the difference in charges. I couldn't find the last invoice to compare (but now have), and asked why $75 and not $40 like before. She didn't know. I asked how much per ft., and she replied $2.50. I said well, they are only 16 sq. ft which mysteriously seems to make sense to my original claim of the $40 charge....no answer other than maybe they had a stain or something, but would have to come back and talk to Andy. I did so the next day, after going over it again with his wife, Andy came out, she spoke to him in their native language (another disrespectful trait), he then replies to me, that it's the minimum charge....I said 'whoa dude' last time $40, now you charge my wife $75....he asked about the previous invoice, I said I would find and bring it back. I asked why he charged my wife in advance, and not me..no answer. I then asked for a credit...he says no without the bill from the first visit. I then responded 'this is how you treat your customers?'...he then turns away and waves his hand in the air....I guess he was done with me... The bottom line is this....he isn't just a liar, he will take advantage of women...maybe it's their culture, I don't know. I do know that he is not an honest man, and has no idea about customer service....he truly doesn't care about his customers.... I have since mailed both invoices to him with a big F U on them, and told him....reviews are a bitch when they don't go your way! read more

I took a fairly new rug to get cleaned that fell victim to a Thanksgiving spill incident last year. We really like this rug but have rolled it up and stored it because of the stain. I found Pasadena Oriental Rug Inc purely by accident as I was walking by. Andy was very informative and would take a look at our rug. After examination, he told us honestly that the stain would not totally come out but would be a lot lighter. Showing us examples of what we might expect it to look. We went for it and glad we did. The rug looked fantastic and we could not even see the stain damage. Very happy with the results and highly recommend! read more

Just bought a beautiful 42" x 42" rug from Sam. Went to about15 rug stores looking for something that size. They are not to be found. But Sam had 3. He has inventory unlike any other. I brought a piece of antique rug to be cleaned and repaired. This rug was very expensive subs has a very sentimental value for me since it was left to me by my grand parents . At first I was very worried to have this cleaned and specially for repair . I did my research and I came to visit Andy at the his location . After half an hour consultation he assured me that nothing will happened to my rug and will be in original condition when it's done . We recently had Andy pick up 5 rugs. These rugs have been in our family for 40 years. We bought the wool, spun the wool, built the looms and hand wove the rugs in our garage in Ethiopia. 2 were in poor condition and needed repair as well as as cleaning. It is difficult to find someone who understands not only how to clean but how to repair these rugs. Andy came to our home moved furniture and picked up the rugs. He and staff did a beautiful job cleaning and repairing these rugs. We also had some difficulty with having them drop off the rugs because we were having repairs done to our home. He kindly agreed to store the rugs for us for several months until the work was done. Lastly his crew returned the rugs and moved furniture to put them back down. He has been nothing but gracious and helpful in dealing with us. He is pricey but his work was well worth it. He also has the experience and family experience passed down through generations which cannot be beat. Thanks again Andy for all of your help! read more

I had this company clean my rugs and one of them needed a new back. He cleaned the rug replaced the back. The rug was delivered and looked nice. After a few months the rug had several wrinkles in the rug and looked bad. I asked him to come out and look at the rug. He would not come out and look at the rug. I live 20 minutes from the store and he let me know he doesn't have time to come and see the rug. The rug is stretched out or the backing is to small and the rug is wrinkling up everywhere. This is a 2,000.00 rug that I now have to have someone else fix. The owner does not stand behind his work but of coarse he'll take your money. I would not recommend this company. read more

I had a great experience with Pasadena Oriental Rug. I initially took in two smaller rugs to be cleaned as unfortunately our puppy had "used" them quite often. They came back smelling fresh and clean. I then took in a much larger family heirloom that needed cleaning and repairing. The owner was very knowledgeable about the rug and suggested I clean, repair and re-dye part of the rug. While it seemed like a lot, I really love the rug and wanted to restore it. Although it did cost a bit, the rug came back looking fabulous. The faded parts were re-dyed by hand and the fringe was resign and the fraying parts repaired. I am very happy. I have mixed feelings about their work. Some of the rugs we had done were beautifully handled and cleaned beyond expectation. But another rug came back completely dusty, musty and obviously uncleaned. It was so terrible, I never even brought it back into the house. I agree with the reviewers who emphasize the pushiness and confusion. Somehow or another the owner offered me a "discount" for paying cash. Turns out, he explained once he had my rugs in hand, he did this so he would not have to report the transaction on his income and it would save me sales tax, etc. I really didn't understand this was the plan initially (and was puzzled why I wasn't given a receipt, but he came so highly recommended from our realtor and others I wasn't too worried). Ss ridiculous as it might sound to others, I would rather have paid the full amount, paid whatever tax would be owed, and not contribute to a tax cheat. This transaction ended up not including anything written and so then in the end I somehow paid more than I thought he said initially by quite a bit. It was all very dodgy, and happened so quickly I really did not understand what was going on, and he was very aggressive, so I didn't really ask questions as I should have. Plus, he insisted I buy rug pads that were extremely expensive, and no better than what we had before. When he arrived with the rugs, he was so bossy and ordered me to get his workers sodas and drinks and told me I better tip them, which of course I would have done, but he behaved as if I was trying to take advantage of him and his poor helpers by not tipping them more. (I believe I tipped them each 20$ to carry in and place four or five large rugs; all together 30 minutes of work tops.... so 60$.) I couldn't figure out if the owner thought I should tip him too even though he didn't carry anything--besides, he's the owner, not a service employee. Because we now have naughty dogs who pee on the rugs, I need the rugs cleaned again desperately, and though I suspect overall the work would be very good, I can't imagine how much he would charge me and what a big dramatic show he might make of the smell and insisting that I need new rug pads. I have a large rug that I love but was afraid it had been ruined with heavy traffic, neglect (my bad) and pet stains. This company is in my neighborhood so I called. Andy was great. He came out almost immediately, gave me a price (cleaning, binding, pad) and took it away. I didn't have high hopes for the stains but when he and his assistant unrolled it in my living room ten days later - amazing. No smells, no stains. The customer service here is great. They come to your house on short notice, move furniture to get your rugs out, return everything right on time, and do a wonderful job on the rugs. I have been using this company for about 15 years to clean my Oriental style rugs and I think they are the best. I recently took them two rugs that had been badly cat damaged (including urine stains and smell) and Andy and his crew were able to get them clean and fresh smelling again! He is a kind man that cares about his customers and their rug. He is the expert for repairs and cleaning. Your rug will be new again and smell good too. He also does beautiful repair work !
