Came here for the first time for lunch with a friend on a Sunday afternoon. I ordered the Love Boat, which came out to $6.50 and my friend ordered their Street Noodle with chicken, which was $9.50.
What's Hot
- Prices. Pretty decent, especially given the small portions. Each dish is less than $10, so if you just stick to 1 dish, it's a fairly reasonable price.
- Location. It's in Shadyside, which is nice, because there are lots of other options around, as well. It's also helpful if you take the bus.
- Quality. Well seasoned and flavored. The broth of the Love Boat has a slight sweet kick, but not too sweet, which is important. I ordered the level 3 spicy, because I do like spicy food. There was definitely a spicy kick, which wasn't overpowering. The beef was tender. I could see a slight pinkness to it when it was served, which means it was probably just cooked by putting it into the broth right before serving. Definitely yummy. There's pieces of bak choy, a few pieces of sprouts, and some cilantro in the basil. Gave it a nice flavor and I'm glad that there are veggies in the soup.
- Menu variety. Simple and straightforward. There isn't a large variety, which can be helpful. I like that they have meat and veggie (tofu) options. I love tofu, so that they have it on the menu is something I appreciate.
What's Not
- Menu variety. Short and limited. Different strokes for different folks. I like Asian restaurants with stir fry veggie dishes, which this place doesn't have. When it comes to Asian food, I prefer eating family style, so that you can try everything. This place doesn't give you that option.
- Portions. The portions are pretty small. It's not your average Asian noodle soup bowl size, which is usually twice the size of what is served here. Depending on how hungry you are, one dish may or may not be enough to get you full.
- Seating. My friend and I sat at a table for two, which came with 2 high chairs. However, there are no backs on the high chairs, so there was no place for us to put our coats and hang our purses. I put my purse at the edge of the table, but the table isn't big, so my purse fell off a couple of time. I didn't see many seats with backs on the chairs, either. Their long tables, which seat anywhere between 6-8 are, have bench seating. Seating is inconvenient, because there isn't room to put down what little you may have.
- Utensils. They give you the options of forks, spoons, and chopsticks at the table, which is nice. However, their spoons are not Asian soup spoons, which are deeper. These western soup spoons aren't deep enough for you to put your noodles and soup together.
- Cash only. Pretty straightforward, but it's inconvenient. Be prepared.
- Parking. Because of its location, nearby parking is inconvenient. Luckily, I came on a Sunday, so metered parking is free. I ended up parking a few blocks away and walking to the restaurant, which isn't a biggie for me. Just be prepared to pay for parking because this is Shadyside and/or to walk.
Final Answer
Willing to come back, but not a first choice. This place seems overhyped to me. It's not bad, but I've had better. read more
