IC 22 Ottawa Hakka Spot - Paneer Hakka Noodles

I tried IC22 Hakka Spot for the first time with a few friends. Overall it was a pleasant visit,…read morejust not really my personal preference. A lot of the dishes tasted pretty similar to each other, and the noodles we ordered were quite salty. The soups were probably the highlight for us and the part we enjoyed the most. The chicken lollipop was a bit of a let down too, there wasn't much seasoning and it felt more like simple deep fried drumsticks with a dip on the side. Service was good, our server memorized the whole order without writing anything down which was impressive. It honestly felt like a one man show since he seemed to be cooking and serving too. It wasn't busy when we went so we didn't have to wait. We ordered a good amount of food and it came to around $150 plus tax and tip for five people, which is pretty reasonable. At the end of the day it just comes down to personal taste.

I heard about a new Hakka spot in town but have been hesitant to try it as all the other places…read morethat have had Hakka dishes haven't been that great and I've never returned. After a bit of craving from driving by Federicks's while in the GTA, I decided to give this place a try one night. I drove by and walked in to place an order at the counter. They mentioned it should be 15 minutes. The place was about half full and much more open and spacious if it's the place I'm thinking that it took over. About 15 minutes later I walked in and sat on the chairs. The person who took my order acknowledged me. After some significant time after I came in, I got my order and headed home as we wanted some take out. When I got home I checked on the order and it looked pretty decent. I will say, the portion sizes are much smaller than I recall from my favorite places in the GTA, however that was before the massive shrinkflation that has happened the last few years. I tried the chili chicken and honestly it wasn't to bad! Much better than anything else I've had in town. The noodles, I think there was some confusion about this order but I have to say that it tasted pretty decent and I did like that they put a ton of sauce on the side for us. All in all, if you have a craving, give this place a shot. I'll probably come by to try some other things in the future.

Just updating my review for the Pad Thai. Interesting that this is on the menu at a Chinese resto…read morebut it was a solid 3.5. Walked in NYE, late lunch time for my pick up. Take out boxes and bags were everywhere waiting to be picked up. Wow! This place does well over the holidays. Ordering by phone was no problem. 10-15 min wait is about standard wait time. Grabbed my little bag, gave them a $20 and 'keep the change'. Again, as I've mentioned, it does not feel like a lot of food but one dish would feed me x 3 like this one. Not a dry pad thai, more wet. I ordered it extra spicy 2/3 on the heat level and in that sense, it was just ok. Small pieces of thin carrot and a few beansprouts were the vegetable portion. No peanuts, no lime. Not even on the side. Despite that, the dish still had the elements of sweet, sour and somewhat spicy. Remember, if you want soy sauce, chili oil, utensils, fortune cookies, you have to ask for them. The noodles were good in texture and it kept well as leftovers for day 2. Not sure I would order this dish again but I recommend that you try this out if you love pad thai. Mine was chicken and shrimp but you can switch up the proteins. The shrimp were tiny, keep that in mind. Happy New Year! Year of the Rabbit. (Chinese zodiac)

The bbq pork (juicy, flavourful and just right) fried wontons (crisp and savoury), crispy beef (had a great hit your buds savoury tang) and the crispy chicken (there was a flavour I've never experienced in a crispy chicken before to my delight!) And all of these are delicious! Sooo good! And the burnt end egg rolls are perfect!, as good if not a bit better than golden palace. IMO Though the plum sauce is just ok. Service is always quick and efficient. Anyone we have dealt with either on the phone or at the counter has been great! You CAN NOT go wrong eating from here!!! Really hope this place stays open for a very long time and we will be happy to be loyal for a very long time. This is one of those places that you want to be able to say you've gone to for 20 years or more.

The best way I can describe the food is that it tastes like how I imagine Chinese food would taste at a Chinese restaurant in the 1950's in a small town in Canada where there is only 1 Asian family in the whole community, and they happen to be Chinese and they own said restaurant. Now I've never been to such a place, as I was not around in the 50s, but this is just my imagination painting a picture. I feel it's Chinese food westernized to the extreme. I found the food really bland. The food was well salted and probably well MSGed, but it lacked any real flavour to me. We ordered 4 egg rolls ($2 each or 4 for $7.75). They were open ended egg rolls, so the ends are deliberately burnt. They were crispy and hot, and filled with ground pork, onions and cabbage. They were the best part of the meal. We also got the Lucky Dragon Special Fried Rice ($9.95). The rice had shrimp, BBQ pork, and chicken in it. I found the rice too dry and some grains were almost crunchy. The only flavour I could taste was soy sauce. Another dish we got was Chicken with Cashews ($13.45). This dish was mostly celery and water chestnuts, and some tiny cubes of bamboo shoots. It did have some chicken and cashews, but more of the other ingredients. The sauce was bland. The Snow Pea Delight ($14.95) which we also got tasted like it had the same sauce as the cashew chicken dish. It had chicken, BBQ pork, shrimp, snow peas, celery and onions. I liked this dish more because it wasn't mostly filler like the chicken dish, but I didn't like that the sauce was so bland. The last dish we got was the Hunan Style Spicy Beef ($13.45). This sauce was at least a little bit spicy, and had more flavour than the other dishes. However, there wasn't too much beef. It was mostly water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, and onions. It also had green peppers. The saving grace was the service. Service was very casual, but friendly and attentive. Our server refilled our waters as soon as a glass was empty and she checked up on us appropriately. I suspect they hired new front of house staff from when past reviews were written (complaining about the service). They also had a "help wanted" sign in their window. The decor is typical casual Chinese eatery. Lots of reddish and golden hues. There is an aquarium with fish in it. The restaurant is in a plaza. Same plaza as Vardera Cafe, The Glen, Poccopazzo, and Giant Tiger. Lots of free parking.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Cafeteria-style Filipino restaurant in Bells Corners. Great prices, but…read morefood was too oily/fatty/greasy for my tastes. The Long Version: This Filipino restaurant opened up July 28, 2024 where LeeGa used to be. I dropped by for some takeout lunch. Their combo is a great value. For $10.99 you get noodles or rice with 2 main dishes. It's cafeteria style, so they have what's available in trays and you just tell them which items you want. The drawback is you are limited to the selection they have that day. Also, none of the items are labelled so if you don't know what it is, you have to ask. The day I went, (a Sunday) their selections were fried shrimp in shell with corn on the cob, squid, fried chicken wings, a beef with peppers dish in an oily broth, a pork belly dish and a vegetable dish. The noodle dish was Pancit Canton. I went with the noodles, chicken wings and the beef. I asked for no broth with the beef because I didn't want all the oiliness getting into the wings and noodles, so the lady actually put it in a separate container, which I thought was nice. She still gave me lots of the oily broth though, lol. The beef was full of fat and swimming in oil. I wasn't a fan, but at least it had actual lean pieces of meat in it, in addition to all the fat. I just had to do a lot of work cutting off all the fat, lol. The meat was tender and flavourful. The fried chicken wings were great though. Very flavourful and not any greasier than chicken wings at other places. I got 4 pieces, 2 drumlettes and 2 flats. The pancit Canton was good. It had vegetable in it like snow peas, carrots, cabbage and bell peppers. It also had pieces of pork belly in it, but the pieces were really fatty, so I didn't eat them. I got a huge portion of noodles! In terms of value for money, this place is awesome. Easily 2 meals can be had from the combo. The actual food, particularly the beef and pork belly in the noodles, was too oily/fatty/greasy for me. I realize this might be the style for this type of cuisine, but it wasn't to my liking. The flavours were good though. For me personally, since I like lean meats and food that's on the drier side, I would rate 3 stars, but I get that the dishes were likely by nature more fatty and honestly, if they had other selections like BBQ chicken, I would have gotten that instead. So I'm giving 4 stars because I think for what it is, it was good and I have a soft spot for independently owned local businesses. Service was neutral but efficient. There's seating to eat in. Ambiance is fast food-like. It's in a strip mall with free parking shared amongst the businesses in the strip mall. (160)

If you're willing to go into town to go to Chinatown or go down by the airport to go to T&T you'll have more options, but in the West End where Kanata is, it's slim pickings. Granted some of the local mainstream grocery stores like Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, and even Walmart, carry some Asian products, but they are mostly the Asian products that have gone mainstream like black bean sauce and udon noodles. However, if you want some of the harder to find ingredients, you'll need to go to an Asian grocery store and this one will have you covered. Their selection is not vast, but will do in a pinch. Prices are not low but they are not outrageous either. Although higher than T&T and Kowloon Market. Also not everything has prices listed, so you have to ask. I saw a bag of beef jerky by the cash that looked interesting with no price on it, I asked and it was over $30. In all fairness, beef is pricey these days, and it was a big bag, but I'm wary of spending over $30 to try something out, like what if I don't like it? Lol. Right now (early 2022) there seems to be a shortage of rice noodles (like Pad Thai noodles) in mainstream grocery stores for some reason, but this store has an entire aisle full of rice noodles! They also have some items from Nguyen Huong, a Vietnamese shop in Toronto, like Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches), and Banh Bao (steamed bread with meat filling). They also have lots of different types of Vietnamese sausages (Cha Lua) by the cash register. On my most recent I picked up a pack of rice noodles ($2.80), and a slice of Pandan and Taro jelly cake ($2.50). Even though the cake was wrapped in plastic wrap, I could smell the coconut milk and pandan. Yum yum. I'm much closer to Chinatown than Kanata, so I have no real reason to go here, but I check it out if I find myself in Kanata. It's in a strip mall with lots of free parking.

Serving the tofu separately was key to keep it crispy until you drench it in the homemade sauce. Make sure you pour all the sauce on-top of the tofu, really gives the tofu the right flavour.
