Came here on family trip. I was born in Shanghai and grew up in NYC. These wonton are authentic Shanghai wontons, though the Chinese owners did not appear to speak Shanghainese. It was the highlight of our 2 days in Ottawa lol. AC is limited in summertime so be ready to sweat a bit if you get the wonton soup. read more

I dunno why I don't come more often. I had the same sherpherd's purse and pork wontons in soup and also had the pork wonton in peanut sauce. So fresh and tasty. You order at the counter and they bring you the food at the table. The wontons are piping hot. Vinegar, sriracha, soy sauce and hot oil is on each table for self serve. The decor is the same minimalist one as when it opened. They seem to have opened up the back room. If this keeps the price down, it's fine with me. read more

The restaurant is pretty popular and busy especially around the lunch hour (when I went). There are some sitting in front and farther back. I had the pork mushroom wontons with peanut sauce and tried some noodles from a family memeber. The wontons, peanut sauce and the noodles were delicious and flavorful. For the wontons, the portions were great. For the noodles, the portions seems slightly larger a bit (in general). read more

Great prices for Chinese dumplings and noodles. Got the deep fried wontons and peanut & sesame pork noodles. First time having pork fried wontons, very crunchy maybe a little too crunchy. Lots of meat filling but taste is ok. The dry peanut and sesame noodles had an interesting flavour, the noodles were touchy but also soft. The pork was generous and taste like roast pork belly cooked in soy sauce. I'd come back and try the soup wontons. read more

Awesome place! Nothing fancy, but their food is delicious and priced VERY reasonably. If you want a quick meal (take out or dine in) with no frills - this is it. The people who work at the restaurant are also nice and move fast. Great value for CAD. Honestly, much better than many fancy restaurants nearby. read more

We had dinner here on our first night in Ottawa. Service is very typical of a Chinese restaurant. We had the pork dumplings and the noodle in this peanut sauce. The pork dumpling is very filling and delicious, this is definitely comfort food for me. I thought the noodle in the peanut sauce was a bit bland, I wouldn't order this again. Overall, it was a great experience for us. read more

I saw this place recommended on r/Ottawa and am so glad I did, because I didn't notice this place when walking by the area previously. I got the #2 - pork and shepherds purse dumplings and it was $12 for 10 huge ones! Each one was fully with lots of meat and shepherd's purse (it was my first time trying this vegetable and it added a nice texture). The soup was not overly heavy and exactly what I was looking for. I was able to add chilli oil and the table which added a nice bit of heat but not too much. My friends got the hot and dry pork noodle, and the beef noodle soup which both had a good noodle texture -- Definitely will come back here as I had been looking for a good Chinese spot in Ottawa read more

A couple of friends have been to this hole-in-the-wall noodle joint. Both highly recommended it. As someone who trusts their judgment without any hesitation, I headed over here as part of my revisiting ByWard Market. I parked at a parking lot by Courtyard by Marriott and casually walked over to Shanghai Wonton Noodle. It wasn't difficult to find. I walked in and a man greeted me. The process to order is to head to the counter and order there. You pay first, seat yourself, and the food comes to you. I ordered the following items: - Diet Coke - Pork wontons (ten) in peanut sauce - Beef noodle soup I had been craving dumplings well before I had arrived in Ottawa. Pork wontons would do the trick. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and tipped. It was that easy. I grabbed a can of Diet Coke from the fridge. It was cold and perfect on a hot summery day. You can also get hot and cold water from a dispenser. My pork wontons in peanut sauce came to me first. I had brought my appetite. The pork filling in each wonton was solid. You got a decent amount of it in each one. The wonton wrapper was yummy. I liked that you got more dough because the wrapper was thicker and held the filling nicely. They looked handmade. They had a rustic look to them, which I loved. Yay, carbs! The peanut sauce was delicious. Not too salty. Not sweet. Perfect. I added chili oil to it because it needed a kick. The chili oil was fantastic here! If I had brought Tupperware, that jar of oil would have disappeared... haha! My beef noodle soup came out next. It was also excellent. It's crazy that I ordered hot food on a hot day. The beef was tender and sliced. It was the perfect size to have a bit of it with with each helping of noodles. The noodles were enjoyable to devour. They were chewy and perfectly cooked. The broth was also nice. It wasn't salted to death. I loved it, especially with the greens and green onions that made you feel like you weren't simply eating carbs and protein. The interior did look like it has seen better days. It wasn't the prettiest eatery to dine in, but the delicious food made up for it that you focused on how yummy the food was. I want all the wontons and noodle soup here. I'd love to return for more. It's a good reason to hit ByWard Market, and get your authentic wonton and noodle cravings satisfied like mine were. (313) read more

Super friendly family owned establishment. We ordered won ton soup, beef noodle soup and marinated tofu. Everything was delicious. The won ton soup was very filling and the won tons were tastey. Yup, it's a hole in the wall. On the marquee outside it says taco mania. In the window it says wonton noodle. If you are someone like me who can be overwhelmed by confusing menu and ordering instructions, this place will confuse you. Do what I did. I asked the guy at the cash register what is good and he told me. Got the wonton soup, excellent flavor and filling as a meal. Do fleet the looks fool you, give this place a try. read more

Shanghai Wonton Noodle - Pork and mushroom wonton soup. Yummy!! - Noodles Near Me - Ottawa, Ontario

Great cheap food. Service is a little slow, especially when it's crowded, since there are only 1-2 workers doing everything. I really liked the Pork and Chives Wontons. The Pork and Mushroom Wontons were not bad, but between the two, I'd go with the Pork and Chives filling. I didn't think the Wontons in Peanut Sauce were worth the order. They tasted just as they would sound, but more underwhelming. Maybe I would've liked it more if I got it with the Pork and Chives filling rather than the Pork and Mushroom filling. They just tasted like wontons with Jiffy peanut butter sauce over them. The wontons also weren't actually cold. They were just as hot as the ones in the soup, which came out really hot. They probably didn't have enough time to cool the cooked wontons. read more

Grungy hole in the wall spot but is a hidden gem. While visiting Ottawa for Escapade my friends and I were craving for some Asian food and we stumbled on this awesome place. We ordered the wontons with peanut sauce, beef noodle soup, the wonton soup and the deep fried wontons. All items were fairly priced, being lower than $13 each item. Meaning cheap eats!! From the looks of it, it is definitely a mom and pop shop - we even seen the grandmother making dumplings in the kitchen! They were quite busy taking orders and preparing food meaning the dining area was quite lacking. The tables were quite dirty, but nothing you can't look past. Once we ordered the food, we chose our seat and poured our own water from the water filter near the front. We were pleasantly surprised when we received our food, inhaling everything. Definitely a must try in Ottawa. 3.5/5 read more

In general I would recommend and even go there! The food is great but service a bit alow

Busy place so keep that in mind if you are short on time! Serice is okay?! I guess! The food is great! So thats all that matters to me

I went here with my two sons and it was amazing. You had a blast the soup so nice. The soup was amazing.

Tasty noodle, big and flavorful dumpling, the environment is just there, air conditioning may not working well if you coming in a steaming hot summer day... but if you only comes for the food, you won't regret, and don't like this hole in the wall place fool you. We had dumping, soup noodle with chicken leg and a peanut butter dry noodle, all tasted good, but they were hot, paring with hot weather outside and not so good running air conditioning, makes it unforgettable experience, lol Order food next to the kitchen, serve yourself with water and find you own table. Owner will bring the food and everything else. With this food and price, you can't ask for more... read more

Nothing was special with this place. Hole in the wall kind of place. You get a lot of food for your money but don't think anything was great. The place also felt a bit unclean. The peanut sauce noddle we had was sort of meh. And my son who usually loves wonton/dumplings didn't even want to eat the wontons here. However my dad enjoyed it. If you want some cheap eats, without asking too much for the flavor this is your place. read more

This place was hit or miss on their execution. We ordered the fried pork dumplings. These were crisp on the bite and still tender and juicy on the inside with pleasant aromatic notes blended into the meat. The beef noodle was pretty good. The broth was flavorful and well-seasoned. The beef was executed in a fine manner, though not perfect. My friend had the Peanut Tofu Noodles. The sauce they were in was very odd. It had maybe too much fish sauce added? I ate them for her, but they just weren't that great. read more

I am someone who was born in Hong Kong anger up in Markham in the greater Toronto area where there was lots of east Asians, and I diverse population. I moved to Ottawa a few months ago, and admittedly, had not been to many Chinese spots in fear that I would not be authentic to my culture. This is truly a spot that brings me back to home and allows me to feel like I am cultivating my culture. The wontons are handmade by very friendly restaurant owners. It's truly feels like a family of business as many immigrants have from other countries. It was a very reasonably priced, has a diverse meant you were different options, and it was truly delicious and brought me back to my childhood . Would highly recommend it to anyone. read more

FOOD Great place to grab a quick and simple meal! They make their wontons fresh and there are few selections to choose from the menu. I loved the one with sesame sauce! The dry noodles were alright - probably because I've had authentic Wuhan dry noodles before, the flavour of theirs was lacking and too bland. Stick with their soup noodles!! SERVICE You order and at the counter, find a spot if you are lucky and they will bring the food to you! You have to get cold water yourself. Since it is a mom and pop shop, they sometime don't have enough time and hands to clean empty dishes from the table when it gets busy! read more

This spot has great deep fried dumplings -- I ordered the pork and the pork & mushroom dumplings and they were both delicious! For $12, you get 10 hearty and crispy dumplings. I'd recommend having the dumplings with soy sauce to counteract how savoury the dumplings are. read more

Cheap is a stretch. It is an ok average price if you like food around the area. The soups are not that fantastic, it is just MSG in a large bowl and the service is pretty slow. Quantity over quality makes the soup a bit of a nightmare. Food delivery people are always coming in and out, and it makes sense. The restaurant is filthy. The person I came with mentioned that washrooms are dirtier than gas station toilets. Yeah, I even imagine that smell. If you are looking for cheap food, I suggest you cook some instant noodle soup because it will be better and more hygienic. Treat yourself and avoid this hole in the floor. read more

After many years in China, we always crave for some authentic Chinese food. Ottawa has never been known for this. But it has improved in a somewhat surprising way, especially on Rideau St. This small Chinese restaurant, which doesn't attract any particular attention, is worth putting on everyone's map. The wontons 馄饨 in a soup or with peanut sauce are worth the visit anytime of the day. Note though that the menu is quite short and mostly includes noodles and wontons. Maybe the owners could think adding some 小笼包 in the future. read more

A wonderful find in a somewhat sketchy part of Rideau St. The place is not what your expecting when see it from the outside, but you will be quite surprised by the food. They use homemade noodles and dumplings, and you could have them in a soup or dry with a variety of spices. I have been there four times now and my favorites are the pork wonton soup, the beef noodle soup, the vegetable noodle soup, and the pork mushroom one Thanh soup. As you can see, everything I had in there was outstanding. My wife is particularly fond of the vegetable noodle soup, which uses a homemade beef broth. The cook and his wife prepare every meal to order and you can watch them make the dumplings as you wait for your meal. This is a little touch of authentic Asian cuisine in a somewhat touristy place. This restaurant doesn't serving to the neighborhood. It's a family ran restaurant and I was happy to support them. The food was delicious. We were a family of 6 and we each enjoyed our selections. Highly recommend. read more

I had lunch here recently. The place is a bit run down looking, but the food was fantastic! I had the Shepherd's Purse Wontons in peanut sauce $7.98. The wontons were gigantic! You get 10 per order and this was enough for my lunch. The filling is ground pork and shepherd's purse, which I learned was a leafy green plant. The wontons were cooked perfectly, not too soft/mushy. The peanut sauce was tasty. It was not as thick and rich as most places, which is fine by me. Although I found it a little too mild. I'm accustomed to this dish being a little spicier. Although I know it by the name "Hunan Dumplings." Maybe these are different and from a different part of China and are not supposed to be spicy? I don't know, but they were delicious! Staff were nice. So you order at the counter, pay and then sit down. They bring you your food when it's ready. It's a very casual eatery. Despite this, the man who took my order came by when I was part way through my meal and asked me if I was enjoying the food. I thought this was very nice. There is a serve yourself water dispenser that dispenses both hot and cold water. The place is not the most aesthetically pleasing to me. The garbage can near the water dispenser is really grimy looking on the outside and could probably be replaced. I feel that the walls could use a good scrub and a fresh coat of paint. I feel that if they cleaned up the place just a little bit, they would attract more customers. When I was there, it was the peak of lunch time and they weren't super busy. Customers were mostly Asian university kids. The place is not large. It has 5 tables for 4, 1 table for 2, and "bar seating" along the wall for 3 single diners. It also shares it's space with Bar Burrito. So Shanghai Wonton Noodles is at the front and Bar Burrito is at the back (Bar Burrito has it's own seating). So it's like 2 restaurants next to each other with no physical divider/barrier. I've seen this "space sharing" set up a lot in Montreal, but I've never seen it in Ottawa before. I will definitely be back for some more wontons in peanut sauce. I might try the beef noodle soup too which is what all the kids were having, lol. read more

The place specializes in making great chinese food with amazing portions and great prices. I always leave this store stuffed and smiling.

It was a chilly January evening, and my friend slipped on the ice and hit her head. Our spirits were reversed as we started warming up and eating in this place. Service: a family-run business, straight to the point. Tables are sometimes dirty, but with limited staff this is justifiable. Your food is served to you, which I found a pleasant surprise. Atmosphere: simple. May look a little worse for wear, but nothing too off-putting. Do be aware of limited seating (~20 seats) during peak hours. Food: overall fantastic food with bang for your buck. - Large pork wonton soup (4): very good, probably the best in the Byward-Sandy Hill area. I haven't had broth like this in a while. The dumplings themselves are very umami and filling, so you'll be full and satisfied once you're done. - Pan-fried dumplings (7): yes. Works well with vinegar sauce. Works well as a side. - Marinated egg (19): It's a dollar egg, but it does wonders in terms of flavour. Add it to your soup and you've got yourself a meal. Overall, this place is a hidden gem (quite literally; it was hard to find on Rideau) with friendly staff and savoury Chinese cuisine. Just like home. tl;dr Do I recommend this place? Yes. Would I come back and eat here? Yes. read more

This place is good, but marketing failure keeps it fairly secret. Even looking for them and knowing the address, I still walked past twice. The storefront signage advertises several businesses that are NOT the restaurant you are looking for. Even though they are the front-most store of a shared space, their sign is the smallest, just a modest paper rectangle low, in the glass display window, rather than in the topmost signage where people would actually look as they walk along a street looking for a business. The food was homemade, fast, and very decent for the price. Tried beef noodle and added the marinated egg for only an extra $1. The husband-wife team work hard and productively and everything is made to order. It's charming in an Asian vendor stall mom-and-pop operation kind of way. The owner/proprietor barks a calm "ni yao shenme?!" at everyone in an efficient but uninviting manner. The place is heavily visited by Mandarin-speakers and has a lot of authenticity/cred: 25+ people came through as I ate at Monday dinnertime, and only one was non-Asian. This might not mean much in a different area, but this is Rideau just off the Market, so you know this food is legit. TL;DR -- Good cheap eats with authentic Chinese street vendor ambiance at a low price. read more

Definitely a great bowl of noodle soup on a cold day! Initially when you are walking by you won't quite notice the restaurant as they share it with a burrito place! Yup!! The burrito sign is at the top and then only on the glass is the sign for the noodle place! But the noodle place is at the front of the space and the shared burrito is at the back. There are pictures so it's easy to figure out what to order. I ordered their famous/well known beef noodle soup and their fried mushroom wontons. Both were delish! There are also hot sauces on the side if you want to add some spice kick to your bowl of noodles. I quite enjoyed their wontons even though they were not as traditionally Shanghai food style per se. I personally like usingthe dark vinegar to dip my wontons in. There are also what we call Lo mians which are more like a dry noodle. Think of them like pasta style with a sauce on top that you need to mix versus a soup noodle. Overall great place to eat on a cold day! read more
