In a town where the Chinese food fucking sucks, this place is always decent. Wonton soup is loaded with tightly wrapped dumplings. Broth is a bit inconsistent but mostly it's good. Rarely have any bad dishes. This time we tried this wonton dish with a nice sweet peanut sauce. Very tasty. I can never remember the noodle dish we order but it's in the photo (Cantonese Shanghai SINGAPORE noodles, I don't fucking know?) Fresh plates of Chinese greens. Quick and curt service. Piping hot. First time in Ottawa's Chinatown and I picked this restaurant based on looking at the reviews in the area. What a great decision! It's a small restaurant that was bursting with the amount of customers inside. Our dishes didn't take too long despite the amount of customers. I don't think the servers stopped for even a moment. The absolute BEST Chinese food in all of Ottawa! I didn't even get a chance to take pictures of my food because I dug in so quickly. This family owned restaurant is in the heart of Chinatown. The menu boasts many pages and is filled with tons of options. Our go-to order always includes the Shanghai noodles, the noodles with chicken in black bean sauce, the beef and broccoli, and a seafood sizzling plate. The quality of this Chinese food is unlike any other in the area. It isn't too greasy and it is filled with flavour. The noodles are always sauced to perfection. The veggies are fresh and packed with flavour. The chicken and beef are tender. I could truly go on and on... The service is decent. They are quick to take your order and bring your food out. But due to the busy nature of this bustling restaurant, you may have to flag them down for more water or spicy sauce. If you are coming for lunch or dinner on the weekend, I suggest making a reservation. The restaurant isn't huge and often packs up quickly. Best Chinese food in the city. It's not greasy and you can tell it's made right. The service is speedy and friendly for only two people working the front on New Years. We were a large group with three tables but I would come here alone as it has a intimate vibe especially for a date (check the photo). The place is clean and there are two washrooms and they are clean and single stalls. I definitely recommend the vegetable fried rice and there are a lot of vegetarian options. Plus the do have dishes egg and nut free! Only thing is call ahead as there is limited seating and it's a small restaurant so bigger groups will have multiple tables. Used to love this place, but their food hasn't been as good recently. During my most recent visit, we ordered a watercress soup, and watercress is known to be quite dirty. When our soup arrived, it was just visibly filled with bugs. The owner profusely apologized and offered us alternative soups and the rest of our food was delicious. The owner also usually yells a lot in the kitchen and it's quite loud, but that night she was arguing with the waitress which really ruined the atmosphere. read more

I'm not sure what it is about this place but when they're "comfort" Chinese food is on I enjoy eating it. When it's not then I get a massive stomach ache and every so often I roll the dice!!! The portions are massive and for the price in Ottawa it really can't be beat. The food isn't bad when the kitchen is on. The fried rice, fried noodles and a few other items I do order for pick up (when it's not OVERLY oily) is decent. When it is overly oily you'll be paying a steep price. I haven't tried the other items on the menu...I think to many Chinese restaurants on Somerset focus on trying to get every crowd and don't end up doing dishes well so I usually avoid them. The food at Royal Treasure is the best Chinese food we've had in Ottawa - if only they'd stay open later! The place closes at 9:00 so anything after 7:30 or so is a little awkward by the end of the meal, and typically once I'm thinking "Chinese," it's not for an early supper. Coming from Windsor I'm used to good sechzuan, which we haven't found many places for it in Ottawa so far, but it's good at Royal Treasure. We've loved the spicy seafood, crispy duck, various soups, stuffed eggplant and pepper steak (that I can remember), but everything we've ordered here has been delicious and served in generous portions. It's always sort of hilarious how busy this place is - it's always packed! They do have big tables that could accomodate a group, but I'm guessing you'd want to make a reservation since it's typically busy. We'll be back, and I look forward to it, but with these hours it won't be as often as we'd like. read more

I was here for lunch recently with my husband and my parents. Portions are big and the food was pretty good. The restaurant is actually a lot smaller than I thought it would be from the outside. As soon as I stepped in, it reminded me of the Chinese restaurants in Chinatown in Toronto - a little bit run down, utilitarian looking, and a bit loud. We were directed to sit anywhere we wanted that was still available. We sat at a table for four, but there were only 3 place settings. We were served by an older man and a younger man. The older man was very surly. He plopped down the additional place setting without saying anything (all in a pile, not placed out in front of me). And when I mentioned that I didn't want any sesame seeds in the dishes we ordered he just walked away saying "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah." Growing up in Toronto and having frequented Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, I am accustomed to this type of service at these types of restaurants. They are there to provide good food fast and at cheap prices; service is a means to an end, it's not meant to be an experience (function over form). I actually found it amusing and it made me miss my hometown. The younger man was much less surly and introduced every dish to us before placing it down on the table. So we had the Cantonese Fried Noodles ($11.95), Beef with Ginger and Pineapple Sauce ($11.95), General Tao Chicken ($13.50) and one small order of steamed rice ($3.50). Each table gets a pot of complimentary tea. The food arrived at our table pretty quickly. The Cantonese Fried Noodles was good, albeit a little too oily for my liking. It was full of large shrimp, chicken, BBQ pork, broccoli, onions, green and red peppers, baby corn, and my absolute favourite - straw mushrooms (!). Oh man, I love straw mushrooms and I'm so thrilled when I find them in a dish :) Everyone at the table felt that this was their favourite dish of the ones we ordered. The General Tao Chicken is apparently the restaurant's most popular dish. I found it tasty, but it wasn't my favourite. It's slightly more sour than I'm used to. It tasted like a cross between General Tao Chicken and Sweet and Sour Chicken. It's served on a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce. No other vegetables. The Beef with Ginger and Pineapple Sauce was good, although it was an unnatural shade of neon red. I think they put way too much food colouring in this dish. I would have preferred for it to be a murky shade of brown and not have the food colouring in it. Anyway, it tasted to me like they used canned pineapples, and I think they used pickled ginger as well. It did taste good though. There was a lot of tender beef in the dish. Other veggies included onions and green and red peppers. The small order of rice was fairly big. It was enough for the 4 of us. In fact we didn't finish all the rice. I'm glad we didn't order the large, it would have been way too big. To the surly older man's credit, there were in fact no sesame seeds in any of the dishes :) Overall, the food was good. The Royal Treasure Restaurant is hands down the best restaurant in Chinatown. When I first arrived to Ottawa from Toronto, I faced a serious culture shock when I visited Chinatown and experimented with the restaurants in the vicinity. I had given up hope and came to the conclusion that there simply is no good Chinese food in Ottawa... until a friend introduced me to this place. The food reminded me of what I could get in Toronto, and that says A LOT. It's also one of the more busier restaurants in Chinatown - every time we visit, it's a full house! Tl;dr = Ingredients not fresh, the food we ordered were not well seasoned, may need to come back and try the "Canadian Chinese" dishes, such as General Tao chicken, to better assess. PRO: Large portions on some items. We ordered a small size soup and it was enough for 3-4 people (we were 2 so we could have had 2-3 servings each). Friendly, efficient service. Food prep was very fast. Chinese greens with garlic was not bad. CON: The food. Crab meat & fish maw soup did not have much taste. This is because the "crab meat" was imitation crab, and the fish maw was not fresh (rehydrated from a dried pack) so it tasted plasticky. The lack of freshness also affected the fish maw texture, which ended up more like limp wood ear mushroom (if it's fresh, it can be good, but like most delicacy it's easy to screw up). The soup itself did not any depth of flavour. I did appreciate, however, that they didn't load up on MSG or any other seasoning/sauce to cover up the lack of flavour. I'd rather have mild than MSG overload. Other than that, the gloopy soup texture and presentation of the egg inside were on point. BBQ Duck & bean curd (tofu) casserole came sizzling in the pot as advertised, but again the meat and the tofu did not have much flavour. Duck meat was rather tough and had a weird aftertaste - either not cooked properly and/or has been kept for a few days. The only marginally flavourful part of this dish were the bok choys buried in the sauce underneath...which, I guess is better than nothing, but a little sad. We ordered one bowl of rice. Taste & texture was below average. I also felt like the space was not too great - low ceiling, felt like a basement, tables a little too close together, could be better chairs. I see a lot of recommendation for General Tao's chicken. Maybe this restaurant just does the Canadian-Chinese dishes well. If so, I would like to return and reassess with that assumption. read more

The service was terrible. We were asked to sit in separate tables. We thought that it would be a reasonable request to be sitting at the same table, as we had guest coming from far. Yet, as we kindly asked the waitress to setup the tables, she flipped by tossing table cloths, menus, pen strongly at the table. We felt disrespected and left. I thought it was so greasy I couldn't finish it and got a bit of a belly ache afterwards, it was bright red and was just chicken, no veggies or anything, I found it to be quite bland and they were stingy on the sauce. We usually order from Number 1 Chinese. It was closed and although everyone raves about So Good, I'm not impressed with the feel of the place. A bit too crowded, although the service is amazing. Royal Treasure seems almost shady from the outside. Very unassuming exterior. Inside, the tables are clean, it's cool, quiet and feels peaceful. We waited for maybe 15 minutes for our take out. We ordered spring rolls, General Tao's Chicken, Fried Rice and Shanghai noodles. The spring rolls were good, quite greasy but HUGE and delicious. No skimping on the sauce, which was nice. General Tao's chicken was more of a bright red than I'm used to. It wasn't crispy, but it was still very good. The chicken was tender and I liked the flavor and texture of the dish. If you're really attached to a certain version of this dish, you may be disappointed. The Shanghai noodles were my favorite. Plump, butterflied shrimp. Good sauce. I wanted to eat all of it. The fried rice was also nice, but it's generally not my favorite dish. I found it to be a good combination of sticky and greasy. Perfectly tender as well. I like that there were a few bites of rice that were stuck together. If you are used to the portions from No. 1, beware because these are twice the size. You've been warned. I have ordered the general Tao chicken and it's easily one of the best around in China town. The chicken fried rice is a large portion easily for 2 to 3 people to enjoy. The service is fast and friendly enough and the restaurant is a cozy setting good for sitting down for dinner with friends or family.
