Solid 4 stars! This is more like a takeout place but there is a dine in section but it's nothing fancy. Half the place is the restaurant and the other half is an Asian market. We got the Hainanese chicken and BBQ pork combo specials. The food was authentic and the taste was spot on! We're on vacation so this place was perfect serving truly comfort food. If we visit Ottawa again, I'm sure this place will come to mind. read more

FOOD More on the pricey end for Chinese food but there is a reason! They don't skimp out on the protein for their food!! Love their stir fried beef noodles - packed with wok hay. Comparable to the food I'd get back in Toronto. Love their beef dishes especially the beef and broccoli. SERVICE Huge seating space, clean tables, and you can book out their party room as well! Don't let the ambiance scare you away. You order at the counter (menus are in eng and Chinese). The menus also have photos of their top dishes. This place is a combination restaurant and eatery. The food was very good and the girl at the counter was very nice.

I stopped in for takeout at Hong Kong Express today and for a Chinese fast food type place, it's pretty good. I think it's better than Manchu Wok, Shanghai 360, and other such chain food court places. I like that they make things to order (kind of like Thai Express) and stuff is not just lying around under the heat lamp. I got the General Tao's Chicken Combo ($8.25). It comes with vegetables and your choice of steamed rice, fried rice or fried noodles. I chose fried rice. Don't be afraid to order spicy. I ordered "extra spicy" and it was just right (i.e. a bit of a kick, but doesn't burn your mouth). I'm pretty sure "mild" would not be spicy at all. Since the chicken is made to order, it was extra crispy and not soggy in the slightest (even after a 30 minute commute home before I was able to eat it). The meat portion was good. Not overly generous, but by no means stingy. The chicken wasn't gristly either. The meat was stir-fried with red and green peppers and onions. The vegetable side was broccoli and carrots. I really liked that they weren't greasy/oily. My usual complaint about the vegetables at Chinese restaurants is that they are too greasy, but this wasn't the case at Hong Kong Express. The rice portion was very generous. It's basically rice fried with peas, eggs, and seasonings. It was good, not mushy nor dry and not too greasy. Although I didn't eat in, I could see that the space was very clean. There are lots of tables if you want to eat in. It's a relatively new restaurant, so decor is modern. I would choose this place over food court Chinese food anytime. I'm looking forward to going back and trying their Pad Thai (yeah, apparently they serve some Thai food too, including curry). This place is on Rideau, right downtown, so you have to park on the street, there's no dedicated parking lot. read more

I really like the fact that this is an unpretentious place with good food and good prices. It is not all 100% authentic but many dishes are and are really well done. Great alternative to food court Chinese food at great prices in a clean and nice setting. The beef rice noodles was my favourite. Nice noodles and well fried on the wok. The Singapore noodles was pretty good too. The wontons and noodle soup was good but a little bland and the wontons were notre pork than shrimps so not authentic but my kids loved them. The chicken and eggplant and tofu on rice is the make your own combo for $8.50 or $8.75. Great deal and my dad thought it was tasty. Definitely a welcome addition to the affordable and good Chinese food scene! read more

Overall: A good bang for your buck place to satisfy a Chinese food craving Food: I tried the make your own that included fried noodle, broccoli, and sweet & sour chicken. Portion was incredibly big, definitely lots of food. The chicken and noodles were aplenty but the broccoli was about half the amount. I stopped by after work and appreciated the value you get, considering the quantities are quite large. The food is oily (but not too oily), and not too salty, so it can definitely satisfy a chinese food craving! I got the "make your own meal", and chose the fried noodles, the egg plant tofu, and the spicy chicken. I wish there was more eggplant, as the veggies had mostly tofu. The spicy chicken was indeed spicy (it builds up), and not too oily/salty. The noodles went well with the dish. As for the wonton noodles, the wontons themselves were satisfying; large, and with some shrimp. There were more than just 2 pieces of veggies, which was nice, but I only wish the soup were real chicken soup. The soup they had was super light and didn't add much, so not worth drinking. The server filled up the water quickly. I sat next to the window so it's good for people-watching on rideau street as well. The rest of the restaurant had all chinese clients, likely students, which is a good sign. I would come back if I'm craving chinese food, and might even try their "regular/full" menu, which has prices similar to a chinese restaurant. The normal Chinese takeaway with a little more options. Service is good but their wifi doesn't work. Food is okay Drinks lot of options, I had a jasmine tea. Seating is huge and u can either takeaway or eat. They won't return the change if you dnt ask fr it. WEIRD! Avoid this place as I felt sick after having the tao chicken. read more

As a Chinese Canadian I can tell you there is nothing "Hong Kong" nor "Express" about this place. The first time I got take out the food was expensive and sub par. The second, and last time, I went I ordered 2 hot and sour soups to go. I stood by the counter waiting patiently, looking at three soup pots sitting in the steam line. 10 minutes go by and I'm thinking to myself, "no way the soup is pre-made and already sitting in those pots. They must be making it fresh, why else would it take this long for soup??" Well about 15 minutes later the girl that took my order walks over to the pots and fills 2 soup takeout containers. Are you effing kidding me?! I continue to watch her struggle for 2 minutes to put the lids on, then puts the soups by the cash register while she looks for a bag. At the same time a tray of food comes out from the kitchen and instead of bagging my soup and giving it to me, she takes the tray to bring out to the restaurant. The order ended up being incorrect for that customer and she comes back with the tray. Now I'm forced to watch this excruciating display of incompetence unfold before me as 4 staff members are trying to figure out what the correct order was supposed to be. Meanwhile my soup is still sitting on the counter getting cold. I tell the girl to bag the soup and give it to me because it's taking way too long. She says, "sorry", bags it, and without even looking at me plops the soup on the counter in front of her, totally out of my reach. Great job you jokers. read more

A hybrid fast-food takeout/sit-down restaurant that does somethings really well (Beef fried rice noodle, Stewed Beef, Curry, & Hainanese Chicken) and others that are okay but won't knock your socks off (the soups). On the whole, it's a worthy addition to the local map. What truly won me over was the value of its combo specials (choice of 1 protein + 1 veg + 1 rice or noodle) for $8.50 - 8.75. Generous portions & priced just right. It's a rare find in downtown Ottawa, even though its location is not easily accessible on Rideau St., especially during rush-hour traffic. Today was my second time that I went there for a pick up. I had ordered PAD Thai and the first time I had eaten it, I fell in love with the superior taste. I never eat egg rolls when I go out, but the first time, the sweet lady told me they were very good go i said OK, and she was right. Today, my second visit after a week, I go back, wanting and expecting the same taste. Unfortunately, I do not know what happened, but, the dish as not the same. First time I asked for chicken, and this time shrimps, but I think there was a mistake because although the food was good, It was not the same noodles, not the same veggies and not the same taste. I saw this the other day on my way into the Metro on Rideau and made a mental note to check it out next time I was in the area. I looked it up on the internet to see if anything was written as it is fairly new -- there were a few good reviews so I thought it would be worth a shot. I normally submit reviews in Trip Advisor but I guess it is so new that it isn't in there yet. Pros: - new, mid-sized dining area, new/clean restrooms, bright, lots of natural light - no carpet, chairs have padding - employee was outside handing out take-out menus and invited/greeted me - once I got in, the ordering counter is at the back and the kitchen is behind it - menu is overhead and as lighted boards - menu is not terribly over polluted like some Asian restaurants - if you are eating in, they do use PAPER plates - they actually cook your food once you order it so it isn't pre-made food - veggies I ordered tasted fresh and crunchy - portions are likely larger than the Asian food places at Rideau Centre - reasonably priced ($2.95 - 12.95 the most expensive) - counter staff speak English and Mandarin Cons: - the menu is not super extensive - I wouldn't say the food is considered authentic Hong Kong/Asian - while they do use paper plates, I failed to notice any recycling options - if you are eating in, be prepared to use plastic utensils - your food is ordered and placed on a tray giving it a 'cafeteria' feel to the place - you are giving a call number (ex. A1) to pick up your food but it's hard to hear when it is called out It's attractive given their prices but if you want authentic, there is a place down the street across from Loblaws called 'Thai Plus'. Do note, however, Thai Plus is a bit more $$$ than Hong Kong Express and the portions are smaller in my opinion. Overall, I'd say this place reminds me of Asian mall food minus the fact that it isn't in a mall. I would classify this place as 'Westernized Asian food'. Because they don't serve on you and you probably are going to pick up after yourself (due to the tray the food comes on), I likely wouldn't feel obliged to tip (the option to tip is available if you are using debit). read more

I was quite hopeful when this place first opened up. Unfortunately, I found the food quite disappointing. I ordered a meat dish, but they bulked up most of my plate with broccoli and rice, alongside a very small portion of meat. For this reason, the meal just wasn't satisfying and definitely not worth the price. Portion sizes are actually smaller than Asian take-outs at Rideau Mall. Also, the carrots that came with the beef brisket were only partially cooked - unacceptable. I was underwhelmed by the quality of food the first time I was there, so I thought I'd give it another try several weeks later. I was equally underwhelmed the second time around. First time: braised beef brisket, chicken wing - minuscule meat portions. Second time: deep fried chicken steak combo - more broccoli than chicken on my plate.
