Having grown up in Markham, a city where every other restaurant serves Cantonese food, I have very…read morehigh expectations of authentic Cantonese food. Ng's has become the staple option in Ottawa and by Ottawa standards, is likely one of the best the city has to offer. I've been completely turned off by Ottawa dim sum so my review is based on their dishes. The standard go-to items are pepper salt squid, sweet and sour pork, seafood chow mein, stir fried king mushrooms with pork jowl and the taro duck. Most of the dishes have wok hei, the distinct charred aroma that skilled chefs capture through the ingredients and oil meeting the intense heat of a wok flame. The flavour and quality have been consistent through the years and the menu is large and well priced though occasionally the food is a touch more greasy or lacking in wok hei. Seafood specials can be found on a big chalkboard on one of the walls, though it is only written in Chinese so you'll have to ask about it if you can't read it. PS. 10% discount for cash payments!

The potstickers were fantastic and you could tell were made in house. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the price for just 4. I should've stopped my order there, but I made the mistake of adding some General Chicken. It was made using dark meat which is fine, but the meat itself was very fatty and grisly. The sauce had good flavor, but I couldn't get past the texture of the chicken. I ended up only eat 3-4 pieces and throwing out the rest. I wonder if there's an option for white meat chicken instead.
