But that's me. I had a smoked meat sandwich that was pomped on the menu as piled high... It wasn't but hey... Inflation is real. Fries. Peeled and freshly made. What a terrific place. We went there for breakfast the other day and loved it. The service was quick and friendly. The ambiance was pub-like but with booths and some chair seating. The food that I had was excellent. The bacon was perfect; not too salty and just done right. The eggs were scrambled perfectly too. Rye toast lightly buttered and the home fries? Actual chunks of potato prepared on the grill and I opted for the extra onions for added flavour. Will definitely return for breakfast. We'd been there for supper and their pizza is excellent too. This unassuming restaurant is a bit of a gem. Our waitress had a wonderful way about her, was willing to express an opinion, and managed about 15 tables seamlessly. Decor is leans toward country, with undertones of sports. Seating is comfortable . TVs on the wall give the single diner something to do without being annoying and. We both had a version of Eggs Benedict. Mine was the Montreal Smoke Meat version, which I very much enjoyed. Hubs enjoyed his Country Style Benedict too. read more

There is no better place in at least the West end that can beat this for breakfast. But all the food is great and servers are great too. You can usually expect a wait on weekends for breakfast. Looking for a new place to have breakfast we stopped in a Kal's. We were not disappointed. I got a HUGE breakfast plate, "Kal's Breakfast", I believe it was called. It was loaded with 2 strips of bacon, 2 sausages, 2 pieces of ham, 2 pancakes, and home fries. I mainly wanted the pancakes and home fries, so I gave some of the meat to my boyfriend. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that they didn't offer tomato juice or tomato slices as a side option. Generally speaking, I like having tomato juice or tomatoes with my breakfast. I didn't see them as an option on the menu. Everything else though was really good. Portions were big, our server was attentive, a great local restaurant. Would love to go back and try their pizza. Oh my how things have changed in the 3 years since I've been here! Echoes have been reduced with the introduction of booths, and the decor has changed completely! There's more on the menu too. And now they are licensed to sell liquor. TVs all around. The waitress still can't hear and still got the order wrong - but we didn't mind sharing a glass of Beau's. First time here. We were looking for a good homestyle breakfast and were aware of this place in the neighborhood. Servings are large and reasonably priced. Service is very good -- constant coffee refills and check-ins. Breakfasts can be similar everywhere, but what stands out here are the home fries made from scratch -- not the frozen garbage served by almost every other place. Sausages are larger too, and this may be the only kitchen that understands what an "over medium" fried egg is --- still a liquid yoke that doesn't run all over the plate. Definitely worth a return visit. They seem to be busy for lunch and dinner and offer a varied menu which includes a lot of pizza, so that may be worth a try. read more

Such a great place we stumbled upon. It was so good and friendly that we went back the next day! Worth the trip.

Came by for lunch with the gang recently as we saw a new restaurant and pizzeria by 5 Guy Burgers. The place is on the smaller side of a medium sized restaurant and they have a TV on one of the walls that is viewable by most but not all seats...in case you come to watch a game. The group of us all ordered our own pizzas. It took a bit of time for all the pizzas to come out but it wasn't to bad. I think that's what happens when the table orders a lot of pizzas! The pizzas looked pretty good. It has a medium thickness crust and all the toppings looked nice. They use real bacon strips. I had a chance to try a deluxe, a meat lovers and one other slice. They were all decent slices for sure. At the end of it I only ate 3 of the 6 slices from my medium pizza (2 were swapped with others) and it was about $17.50 for a 6 slice pizza. Pizza prices can go up and down from there depending what you get but it gives you a ball park what you might be paying. I didn't love the pizza but I didn't hate it either which is awesome. They have lunch specials that sound fantastic and a very large menu that serves other items ranging from the standard restaurant fare to Italian food. read more

My husband and I took my father-in-law to Kal's recently for dinner. I read some reviews of this place online and saw that they are a small restaurant with only about 12 tables, so I wanted to make reservations. When I called to make reservations they seemed a little taken aback and said that they don't usually do reservations but would take down my information. When we arrived, there were only 2 other people in the restaurant, so I guess reservations were not necessary after all. I'm surprised that the place wasn't busier because the food is good for what it is, the portions are huge and the prices very reasonable. We started with the Combo #2 Appetizer Platter (4 wings, 4 cheese sticks, 3 chicken fingers, fries and your choice of 2 dipping sauces - we chose garlic which is made in house and plum sauce for the chicken fingers) $13. We got the wings medium and they had a nice spicy kick to them. They were rather small and not that meaty, but they were full of flavour. The cheese sticks were gooey and stringy with a nice breaded crust on the outside. The chicken fingers were real breast meat and nice and tender. Fries are regular cut fries and not battered. They were crispy and hot. The garlic sauce was not overly garlicky. It had a creamy texture and went well with the fries. I had the Hot Turkey Sandwich ($15). It was actually a pile of stuffing, layered with real turkey breast meat and then covered in turkey gravy. It was not a sandwich at all, but the server did warn me when I ordered it. The meat was all white meat and was juicy and tender, not dry at all. The stuffing was actually quite good. It even had little bits of vegetables in it (carrot and maybe celery). The gravy was a strange yellow hue and a little too salty for my taste though. I liked that my entree came with 2 sides (and they don't charge you extra for onion rings or Caesar salad like some places do). I chose a Garden salad and onion rings. The onion rings were gigantic, like 4 inches in diameter! They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I loved them. The garden salad was mostly romaine lettuce with a bit of carrots, red onions, cucumber, tomatoes and one slice of green pepper. The vegetables were fresh, but the salad itself was unremarkable. My husband had the Table 44 Burger ($14) which was a beef burger with fried mushrooms, brie, peameal bacon, lettuce and tomato. The bun is a regular bun with some cornmeal on it, no pesky seeds. I had a bite of it and it was good. The flavours really go well together. He had coleslaw and onion rings as his side. The coleslaw is a vinegar-based coleslaw, which I liked much better than the traditional mayo-based ones. My father-in-law had the Shrimp Stir-fry ($16). It had red and green peppers, mushrooms, carrots and some other vegetables. He said that it could have used some more shrimp, but overall he seemed happy with the dish. He had fries and onion rings as his sides. We were so stuffed after all this food that we had no room for dessert (which the server tempted us with by bringing out slices to show us what they look like). My father-in-law had the house wine which he said was quite good. Overall Kal's is a great family restaurant. The portions are really big. There are no Masterpieces here, but just good hearty diner-like dishes. The server was really nice although she was forgetful with bringing waters and we had to ask to get our water re-filled. But for this kind of place and for these kind of prices, I'm ok with that. I would go back to Kal's. This restaurant is in Grant's Crossing. Great place for breakfast an lunch. Menu items are similar to your typical diner which include appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and pizza. Other choices include pasta and fish. I tried the steal special which was a steal at $12.99. I'm not going to complain considering that at that price I wasn't expecting a AAA cut of meat. It was tough but probably could have been helped had she asked me how I liked my steak cooked instead of it coming out well done. Small diner with great service so far. Food is nothing to rave about but that being said it is good. Basically if you're in the area give it a try if you're looking for another option. It's not something that I'd consider driving from a far jus to eat. Breakfast is good as well. read more

You know I've been eating right next to this place for a while now. I usually go for shawarma or burger next door. Then one day I had the urge to try a new restaurant so I went here and it was very quiet and empty. I guess I was early for lunch so I got lucky. The service and food were both good, but not exceptional. The price vs quantity vs quality of food was acceptable for lunch I think. I would recommend that you add it to the list of places you go for lunch in the Kanata area. We all know how short that list is anyways when look for good quality food. read more

Found this place through Yelp and happy I did. This place is a bit on the small side, but it's amazing how many tables and booths they have managed to squeeze in. My wife and I went on a Saturday for lunch. We got there just as the breakfast busy-ness was dying down. My wife had the shrimp stir fry with extra chicken and I had a pizza. Both dishes were very good. My wife's plate came with fries: fresh cut and done just right. Yummy. The only minor hitch we had was that I had a pizza slice left over and asked to bring it home. While attempting to box it, the server dropped it on the floor. She came over and apologized and gave us a discount on our bill, which was very cool. We tried breakfast there recently, we're really big on breakfasts with the kids. The good: service was friendly The ok: eggs and smoked meat was ok The bad: may be the worst coffee I've had in all our breakfast joints. I couldn't go past 3 or 4 sips. Great little spot for breakfast. When I say little, I mean it... the place probably holds about 70-75 people in total and they've only had two servers on duty this morning. It took a few minutes to get seated as the place was hopping, but we settled into a cute 2 person booth. Or server was over quickly to take our orders. Food was up pretty fast and was it ever good! For the first time ever, like really ever, I ordered something that WASN'T Eggs Benedict...Shocking I know...I'll just let that sink in.... It wasn't because they didn't have eggs benny - they actually had about 6 different takes on eggs benny....I have been trying to eat healthier lately and I decided to have a spanish omlette (and might I just add that I may as well have had the eggs benny given the similarities in calories which I only realized as we were leaving) but, I was very impressed! As was BF! He got the usual 2 eggs over-easy, split sausage, home fries and white toast. I feel like there could have been hot sauce on the tables instead of HP sauce, but I'm not one to fuss. Love that it is not a chain restaurant. They have good food at fair prices. Breakfast is great. Nice people. Food tastes good and fresh. One downside now that the place has got busier is the wait times. There is no place to wait and when you are waiting you are kind of standing with the people at the front table by the door (awkward). The other downside is they keep a very limited staff, they are quick and great but one person can only do so much. read more

What idiot did the space planning in this place? There are simply too many seats crammed into a small space. You have to uncomfortably squeeze past other patrons to get around. I just overheard someone say, "no matter where I stand I'm in the way" This is what it feels like in a big city like San Fran. YUCK. My advice, don't be fat or tall if you go there. We had brunch here on a Monday morning with the promise of all day breakfast and they delivered. The Western Omlette was full size and the country potatoes came mixed with carmalized onions. There was no way I was going to finish it. My friend had the eggs over easy and potatoes and was quite satisfied. The coffee was adequate and the tea selection is minimal. My youngster always tries to say something to make the staff smile wherever we go, and the waitress gave the stink eye right off the bat. I was watching the other one flinging her very long hair about and putting it in a ponytail, and taking it down, and putting it up again. Around food. Not appetizing. My youngster was very upset about the food and the service. (The two waitresses were talking to one another while the first was drinking wine. Annoying to listen to, yes, but we were annoyed to have to approach them for a new fork) When asked about the food, my youngster said "It has a bad aftertaste, and I do not want to pack this up and bring it home". Kal's is a fantastic little restaurant! I've been here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The staff are friendly and the portion sizes are very generous. My favorite meal is the club sandwich with fries. The turkey seems to be roasted in-house and the fries taste like they came off of a chip truck. You can't go wrong with this gem. read more

I've been a few times now for breakfast/brunch and think the quality for the classic breakfast/brunch meal is a great deal. I haven't ever had to wait for a table for more than a couple minutes. While it may seem short staffed, the waiting time is very short. Also, while I don't generally drink coffee, my wife thinks its the best coffee in town. We ventured here the other day for lunch, looking to try something new, and with 2 kids in tow. Cute place, service was great, and the pizza was terrific. Kids pizzas were huge, brought half of each home, but a medium Greek was perfect for 2 hungry adults. The fact that you could get a local beer added a star for me. Well done-we will be back. 5 Stars for All-Day Breakfast Goodness!!! I've only even eaten from their breakfast menu here because I love it so much! My husband usually orders the "Hungry Man's Breakfast" while I order the Two Eggs Breakfast. We share the two and come out more than happily full. I absolutely love Love LOVE their home fries! They are the tastiest I have ever had and I like that they aren't over-fried like some other places. I think that they're pan-fried with the bacon bits or something, so if you can't have bacon, you may want to check with them. But since I love bacon, it works for me! I always order the bacon (my favourite) and it is always cooked to perfection: crispy but not crunchy. I usually get some of the ham and sausage from my husband and both are also delicious. I really like the sausage because it's not the typical plastic wrapped breakfast sausage. These ones have actual meat flavour to them without being overly salty (and that says a lot because I'm not a fan of salt). And it's nice that Kal's offers more than just white or brown toast; they also offer rye, which I always order. It's also nice that they don't over-toast their bread. We have yet to have any burnt toast and we hope they keep it that way! The service is good and the coffee is delicious. Unfortunately they only have white sugar (although I have never asked if they have brown or raw available... so maybe they have others?) BUT... my absolute FAVOURITE part about this place is that their breakfasts simply make me feel like HOME. And there's no better thing than getting that home-cooked feeling away from home. The two waitresses are really personable and while they may be scrambling a bit on the really busy mornings, they still provide great service. This place was recommended to us by my fiancé's uncle and we tried it out. Haven't looked back since. My personal favourite is the Ham and Cheese Omelette. read more

My wife and I went there for our first time for supper to celebrate my 65th birthday. At first we were a little taken aback by the small size and casual atmosphere, but once we tasted our food our fears were forgotten. I had their lasagna and my wife had the baby beef liver.
