The fries were yummy and plentiful. The eggs on the workman's plate were a bit over cooked as my husband had asked for over easy. But overall, he enjoyed his meal. Will be back to try more things! Ordered a Huevo Ranchero ($16) - which came with scrambled eggs two corn tortillas with salsa, cheese, sour cream and a side order of fries. The eggs could have used some seasoning even with salsa it needed something extra A Vegan Breakfast Bowl ($14) - a mixture of tofu, spinach, mushrooms and tomato chutney - which somehow tasted to all 4 of us like onion chutney. The vegetables done good, but tofu again had just no flavour. Tofu had a spice rub all over, but it tasted like plain tofu. The Bacun strips were rice paper rolls with some attempted flavours but none came through. And two Vegan Bennies ($16) - a super grainy slice of bread topped with the same tofu, green onions, Bacun and some red pepper strips (NOT Coulis as described in the menu). If some person was having a tofu dish for the first time I think they would describe tofu as no flavour at all. We vegans know that you can do amazing things with Tofu. The home fries in the above dishes was the best - now that we could give 5 out 5. All of us had to go and get Sriracha and Ketchup from the counter to rescue the dishes. Coffee was too weak as well. When you go in and order on the counter and you get food delivered to your table. Should the restaurant still offer to tip on the machine BEFORE even we were served? The space used to be The Savoy (which is now no more), and before that was Moe's Newport Restaurant (which is now further north on Churchill, co-located with Donna's Express). I wasn't really in any hurry to check out Zak's Diner because my impression of it was it was a place that sources its food from frozen and very little was actually made in-house. I prefer scratch kitchens, so this is why it wasn't high on my list of new places to check out. I did finally have brunch there with my husband and a few friends. I got the Eggs Benny ($19.49). The eggs were poached medium, as requested. The Hollandaise sauce tasted like there was a lot of flour/thickening agent. It lacked the creaminess I like and had a sour taste to it that I wasn't a fan of. The meat was just regular back bacon, similar to what I have in my own freezer. The English muffin could have been toasted a bit more, but otherwise was fine. I opted for tater tots instead of home fries. I expected crispy tater tots, but they were somewhat soggy. I was pleased to see some shredded lettuce and slices of tomatoes on my plate to add a vegetable component to the meal. The baked beans were unremarkable. My dish was perfectly edible and I finished it, (I hate to waste food), but it was lacking that je ne sais quoi, that something special to make it it's own, you know what I mean? My husband had the Meat Lover's Breakfast ($23.49). It came with 3 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, a thick slice of ham and 2 sausages, baked beans, 3 slices of toast cut in half (he choose sourdough) and tater tots. His tater tots were also soggy, so it wasn't just mine. He agreed with my assessment: ok brunch, but no wow factor. Our friends had an omelette, smoked meat Benny, and a Quesadilla (which was from the lunch menu). They finished their plates. They commented on the cool decor but no comments on the food. Service was excellent. My husband and one of our friends had coffee and our server was quick with refills. Our server was pleasant and attentive but not intrusive. Two of our friends were from out-of-town, so we had lots of catching up to do, and she let us be without interrupting us. The decor is funky with lots of signs and old vinyl records on the walls. The washroom doors have drawings of Jughead and Veronica (from The Archie comics) on the doors. The floors, booths and bar retain some of that French Bistro flair from the Savoy days. What the food lacks in uniqueness, the decor makes up for. They have a side patio, which is up against the side of the restaurant, and a front patio which is a cordoned off part of the road, so separated from the restaurant by a sidewalk. Usually I like trying out new businesses that open up in my neighbourhood, but admittedly I'm not a coffee connoisseur. I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference between a $50 cup of Kopi Luwak and a cup of Folgers instant coffee, lol. So coffee shops don't really excite me. However, I recently learned that Bower Coffee Company sells baked goods from a business called Adam Bakes. I've been wanting to try treats from Adam Bakes for a while now, but they are only open on Saturdays 8am-12pm and not in my neighbourhood, so their limited hours have prevented me from trying them. I didn't realize that they also sold their baked goods to other businesses for resale, so when I discovered this, I planned a little coffee date for my husband and I at The Bower Coffee Company :) I chose a Cinnamon Swirl Blondie from Adam Bakes ($4.85) and my husband chose a Peanut, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip cookie from Art-Is-In Bakery ($5.25) and we got a regular 12 oz coffee ($3.25). The coffee tasted like any other coffee to me (unsurprising, lol). My husband is more of a coffee connoisseur than I am and his comment was it was a bit too watery, but otherwise ok. I loved the Blondie. It was rich and I think there's cheesecake swirled into it because it had creamy bits to it. It had a potent cinnamon flavour. I really enjoyed it and so did the hubster. I ended up hauling my butt out to Adam Bakes the following Saturday morning to try their other offerings, which weren't available at Bower Coffee. Adam Bakes will get its own review. I noticed that the prices are cheaper buying directly from Adam Bakes than at Bower Coffee, but I guess that's not surprising. The cookie was unremarkable in my opinion, but the hubby enjoyed it. It had whole peanuts in it as well as peanut butter and chocolate chips. It was soft and chewy, and the whole peanuts gave it the occasional crunch. Service at Bower Coffee was great. The barista asked me for the Blondie if I wanted a centre piece or an edge piece. I know some people like the crispiness of edge pieces, but I prefer the softness of centre pieces, so I was happy to be asked. The decor is clean lines minimalist. It's not a huge space, but has a decent amount of tables. It was bustling on a Sunday morning. Overall, a nice place for a coffee date, albeit a bit pricey in my opinion, but I get it, everything is expensive these days :/ We walked there, but it's street parking only for those coming by car. It's located in an industrial park just off Clyde. So their signage says "home of the bulgogi hoagie." I love beef bulgogi, so I went in with the intentions of getting that, but I discovered that the meat is marinaded not only in sesame oil (which I can eat), but also in sesame seeds (which I can't eat), so I could not experience their bulgogi hoagie :( and had to order something else. I settled on the fish tacos ($8) with a side garden salad (the menu said $4, but I was charged $4.25, and I wasn't going to quibble over a quarter, lol). I got 2 tacos and they were 2 large pieces of pan-fried white fish on top of iceberg lettuce and diced tomatoes in a soft flour tortilla. I did appreciate that the fish wasn't oily/greasy though. So anyone who knows me knows that I look upon iceberg lettuce with great disdain. I feel that iceberg lettuce is a cheapy filler lettuce, and I much prefer a real spring/mesclun mix, or arugula, kale and/or spinach. I would even begrudgingly settle for romaine lettuce. So I was really disappointed that the salad that I received was mostly iceberg lettuce (3 simultaneous sad faces!). It did have some cucumbers, tomatoes, pickled beets, and green onions as well, and the vegetables were fresh, but I was still disappointed. I was trying to be healthy, but I should have just gotten the fries, haha. Service was very friendly and efficient. Decor is typical diner. They serve all day breakfast, and with a name like Miss Molly's Breakfast Club, I guess their specialty after the bulgogi hoagie is breakfast. I'd like to return and try their Eggs Benedict. Hopefully I'll be able to bump up my rating by a star or two. They have their own private parking lot with lots of parking spots.
