Been here twice (local in JP). I've had several things from here but the pho was my fav so far. Very clean, cute place with very friendly stuff. Reasonably priced food. Will continue to come back for forever! Also the smoothies are delicious and it's nice they give you the option for pearls or boba. I don't know anyone who has had bad food here or complained. Listen, I've had tasty food at Noodle Barn - fried rice, curries, vermicelli, great. I'm just here to warn you that the Pad Thai... not great. I've tried multiple times thinking it would be better, but I couldn't even eat beyond the first couple bites last time. The chicken is both bland and has a weird chicken after taste, like it's boiled? The sauce itself also tastes off with way too much fish sauce flavor. And there are few veggies to balance it out. Really great experience here tonight. Friends told us to check out. Arrived on the later side of Sunday and it was still decently busy. Service was fast and polite, food and beer was very fairly priced, and the food was delicious. We got great portions of sweet and sour soup, and yellow chicken curry. This spot has never let me down. My friends and I are big fans of the crab rangoons (more crab than cream cheese!), pot stickers (perfect dipping sauce), and the beef stew and all noodle dishes!!! The matcha smoothie with boba and the mango sticky rice make the perfect end to the meal. Talk to the manager Grace, she is so pleasant and gives perfect recommendations. I came here for dinner with my boss last Friday. I got the Pho which was very fresh and served with delicious noodles in a massive bowl. My boss on the other hand got a shrimp and chicken curry (forgot the name) noodle bowl and there was simply too much coconut milk to enjoy... we ended up switching half way because I felt so bad that hers was not at all what we expected. Anyway the noodles are good and the price is great for what you get - just play it safe when it comes to the menu. Feedback to the restaurant - make sure all your dishes are delicious or cut down the options on the menu, it sucks when one of us had a good experience and the other not so much. read more

Pho is kind of hard to find in JP, so for a pho place in JP the Noodle Barn is good. The service is great and the staff is helpful and polite. The pho is good but not as great as the places in Chinatown. Again, it's hard to find pho in JP. read more

I got the Tom Yum soup, the Muc Rang Muoi (calamari), and Thai tea delivered through door dash. I was a little nervous getting a soup delivered, but Noodle Barn had 3 separate containers for the soup, the noodles and chicken+shrimp, and bean sprouts+additional add-ons. EXTENSIVE menu! You could come here dozens of times and still not manage to exhaust your options. I settled on the mango curry and was not disappointed! Great portion size -- I'm not a fan of large portions I never manage to finish and have to lug home. Could have done with a touch more rice, but that's the only complaint I can think of. Wine selection was good and reasonably priced for the area. Food aside, this is a really nice establishment. Seating in Jamaica Plain restaurants is fairly limited, but this place does a great job of maximizing their space. On a rainy Sunday night we only waited for maybe 4 minutes before being led to a table in the back. Noise isn't too bad either. Waitress seemed a little confused, but we didn't have any issues. Service was definitely faster than I was expecting, I was pleasantly surprised. I went here with a couple roommates and we had an excellent time. i had a bad first meal here when they first opened, but they've really stepped up their game since (or maybe i got the one bad thing on the menu). I've gotten multiple meals here, and the chicken/meat is good - well textured, and the vegetables are cooked right, and seem really fresh. I think the food's really good here. I hope they keep it up. My review for meat eaters: I thought the pricing was fair, portions were good, and my food tasted good. However, I'm a vegetarian-- and the items marked on their menu as vegetarian were not vegetarian. They have fish sauce in them. I was only informed of this after our (almost) second time eating here, when we were going to order take out. Meaning: they served me something with fish sauce in it even though they were told I was a vegetarian on my first visit. I'm a strict vegetarian, as in I don't eat fish. But, I also don't get super upset if something gets thrown in by accident. However, it makes me pretty pissed off when things are specifically marked vegetarian and they are not. So I probably won't be eating at noodle barn until they address this. read more

I usually like to wait to try a place a few times before writing a review. The first time i ordered take out, and the second time we dined in. For take out we ordered the green curry, massaman curry, and chicken basil dishes. I have to say, the chicken basil dish wasn't my thing. Or maybe it just wasn't what i had expected. The massaman curry was pretty good and my husband absolutely loved his green curry dish. My 2 yr old liked the food, and that says alot. Portions are really generous as well. When we dined in, the staff was friendly. We went for a late lunch on a weekday, so it wasn't packed and we had no issues getting a table. They seem to still be working through the menu though b/c one dish stated it could come as a veggie option, but when we asked the waitress she said its not available yet. All in all, a great addition to JP, and much better than the Thai place that was there!! read more

Let me start by saying I think the food here is very good. But, they clearly don't take allergies seriously. I ordered my meal without an ingredient that I'm allergic to (it makes me feel sick). The dish came with the ingredient on the side of the plate. I kindly explained to the waitress that I was allergic to that ingredient and could she please take it back. She apologized and said that she'd have a new one made for me. Two minutes later, the dish reappeared in front of me. Halfway through eating, I realized that the ingredient was still on the plate. They clearly had just tried to remove it in the kitchen and cover up the space with lettuce. I asked to speak with the owner who apologized and offered me a new dish (which I did not take). She then cane back to say my check was all set. Two minutes later, a check appeared charging me for my soup that I had before the entree. Really? Bad enough that the kitchen doesn't respect allergies, but to charge me $4.25 seems rather petty. I won't be back. Ever. read more

I went there and I waited 15 minutes with NO food. I ordered 2 bahn mi sandwhiches and never got them. The waitress NEVER came to refill our water. The people next to us sat down and no more than 5 minutes ( I kept track), they got their food BEFORE us! I was so mad, I had to actually walk out. Service was horrible. This has become my favorite place to grab Thai food. I've been looking forward to a place like this in JP for a long time and have been going with my family ever since they opened their doors on Centre Street. I always get the crab rangoons, potstickers, and shrimp or chicken pad thai. I started exploring the menu just a few weeks ago and regret not having done so earlier! I'm always sticking to my favorites and ever since trying their Coconut Torn Yum Pho Soup I've been trying something different every time I go (which is at least 2 or 3 times a month). I was super excited to try this place and it was "just ok" - meaning, I'd probably go back b/c I love me some vietnamese food and a plus that it's in my 'hood, but if I was in the mood for *good* pho, I'd probably venture out to Chinatown or Dorchester. So I guess what I am really saying is that this is my Panda Express equivalent to chinese food - if I really wanted something and didn't have time or transport to something further. So, with that being disclosed, my review is just for the beef pho (the standard one, I think it's at the top of the menu). It was served in a reasonable amount of time, but my major dissatisfaction is two-fold: 1) that it wasn't really hot, it was sort of warmer than lukewarm but not warm enough. (I know, I know, just call me Goldilocks...) 2) The broth lacked any depth of flavoring. Big no-no for pho! On the plus side, the meat portion was adequate (but the tendons were hard and not stewed long enough). The service was fine, fast and efficient. The ambiance was nice, but I was surprised that it was a such a "sit-down" place -- with "Barn" in the name, I had expected an "order at the counter" experience, so I was pleasantly surprised. Overall, I'd probably go back and try something different - I feel like it's only fair to give a place 2, or 3 tries before I completely make up my mind. But as of now, it's only mediocre. read more

So.... Four of us just left Noodle Barn. Food was good, service was mediocre and awkward (as per other reviews) which was honestly fine... I planned on coming back.... Until our server came back up to us and asked if the service was bad or if we weren't happy because (they mentioned) they didn't do a gratuity charge on the bill and we left 15%. I'm in the service industry and usually leave at least 20% but we shared the bill with another couple and the service wasn't fantastic so we agreed on 15%. Whether or not you think 15% is OK, WHO THE HELL thinks it's cool to confront a customer about it?? I have never felt more uncomfortable at a restaurant... Briefly: Poor service, raw chicken served, and a very disappointing overall experience. Service: After being seated, it took 20 minutes for a waiter to see us, and 45 minutes later the appetizers had yet to come. Tables on either side of us were seated afterwards and were mid-entree before we received our appetizers. I asked the waiter about the timing, and he informed us it was a busy night. Rude, but OK. 1hr20min into the evening, tables on either side of us are gone, and our dinner has yet to come out. Food: My chicken Bun was awful. I ate around a couple pieces of chicken until I realized that basically everything was half-cooked to raw. To be fair, my wife's Bun with ricepaper was not undercooked, but the food was average, nothing special. At this point, I spoke with the manager about the raw meat on my plate. She apologized for the mistake. Although she did not offer to replace the dish, and instead gave us a 15% discount on the meal, which amounted to $4 off the $11 raw chicken dish. Overall: I'd say the food, when not undercooked, is 3/5. The service is entirely inconsistent, 1/5. My experience is probably worse than average. But given how bad it was and how the owner handled it, we wont be returning. There is simply nothing distinctive enough about this place. Even under normal circumstances, for the quality of the food, this is just an overpriced take-out place. There are just so many better options that make it hard to justify coming here. read more

This may have been the best Thai food I have ever had in Boston let alone in my life. Came here around 5:30pm first when they opened with a friend, and oh boy did they just give the best meal ... +spring roles with extra peanut sauce = amazing +the seafood red curry dish was unreal good. Mussles, plus calimari, plus shrimp with the perfect spice and brown rice = the best. EVER. +the vietnamese salad with shrimp was delicious. Hands down the best place in JP and Boston for Thai and Vietnamese. Great vibe, FAST service, and has beer and wine available, too. Almost always I choose between one of two entrees, hence I have a firm grip on consistency. These two are Pad Thai and Chili Basil Duck. The PT is properly made -- the sprouts stirred in with the noodles. Several thin slices of chicken and three shrimp are included, but no particular spice, so I order "lightly spiced" and it's just right for me. Consistency! The Chili Basil Duck is a different matter, spice-wise. Fairly hot, but not hot hot hot. This place seems unable to do duck wrong, the meat is always tender and tasty. (Note: the tamarind version is very sweet.) Good as it may be, the meat is outclassed by the superb vegetables. Carrots, zucchini, green beans, broccoli and bell peppers are each cooked to crunchy, colorful perfection. This is a talented, high-performing kitchen! The few other dishes I've had were all excellent too. Note: The take-out service is unusually prompt, so I recommend not phoning your order in, but showing up and waiting the few minutes it takes to make sure you get the freshest food possible. I decided I like Noodle Barn after trying it three times. Based on other reviews it seems like they might still be ironing out some kinks, but I will share my experience. I tried the bun with tofu, the ginger scallion chicken with rice, and the banh mi with pork. Both the bun and the banh mi hit the spot- good portion size, reasonable times for takeout, and delicious fresh food. I liked the chicken dish too (the only time I ate in), and have found the service to be friendly and fairly attentive. Everything seems reasonably priced (the banh mi in particular is a steal for the neighborhood, in my opinion). I will be going back! read more

I don't really get some of the *meh* reviews on here. My experience after about fifteen or so visits since it opened has been nothing but positive. This place never fails to make me feel euphoric after a meal. Noodle Barn is exactly what you want from a neighborhood Vietnamese/pan-Asian restaurant: 1. A big selection of pho and noodle dishes prepared authentically with strong flavors 2. Things that are advertised as spicy are legitimately spicy (very important for me). 3. Prices that are reasonable (It's rare to find something over 11 bucks here for dinner) 4. Fast, consistent service (but not a lot of schmoozing) I typically order the pho sate (very hot) and the pho ga - both of which are as good as anywhere I've tried in the Boston area (i've tried them all, I think). Deep rich broth with a slight sweetness and ginger flavor. As Bourdain said in one of his Vietnam episodes, pho is "the dish I crave above all others..." or something like that. That's pretty much how I feel, too - I get antsy if I don't eat it often enough. This place makes me happy and sweaty as if I've just run ten miles instead of lazily slurping hot, delicious mystery liquids. I usually come here with my son who is 2 years old and he makes a huge, disgusting mess of his meal (he loves the pot stickers and chicken watercress soup); the staff here could not care less, in fact, they seem positively thrilled to see us every time. They greet him like he's some goddamn prince. The only thing missing from the menu is Bun Bo Hue which is the only reason I would leave JP and head into Chinatown or Dorchester for Vietnamese. Otherwise, this is the go-to for me and my family- I'll be here at least once a month -- and now that it's cold again, probably every week. read more

I've tried to eat at Noodle Barn four times, and only succeeded once. The first time was on opening day. We went in the late afternoon. It wasn't too busy. The service was a bit stiff, but that's understandable for the first day. The food was good. I had the Basil Fried Rice, which also included minced chicken. A bit unusual, but delicious. The second time, I tried to order take out. Their website didn't work. Their phone number sent me to a generic answering machine message and disconnected. I ordered from somewhere else. The third time, we went by on a Sunday around 4:45pm. We walked in and were told they were closed, despite over half the tables being filled and despite the hours on their menu saying 11:30am-10:00pm, 7 days a week. We were told to come back at 5:30. The fourth time, we decided to give them another try and came back the same day around 5:40. There were about a dozen people lined up outside, all saying they were also told to come back at 5:30. But the door was locked and the closed sign was up. After about 10 minutes, we left to go elsewhere. By then, there were only two other people still waiting. Noodle Barn could be a good addition to the neighborhood. But they'll need to figure out how to actually run a business first. I hope they sort things out quickly. Maybe then I'll have the chance to give them a real review. read more

Where to start? Well service was poor. Our waiter seemed inexperienced. Didn't bring us water until we asked and rarely ever saw him again after ordering. Don't know why but our food took a very long time to come out. One appetizer was ordered with two entrees. 35 minutes into the visit we finally got our 4 whole beef skewers. Now we were starving and scarfed them down. These were pretty good but I don't know if they justify the $7 price tag. The wait began for the two entrees again. I read the other reviews about their large portions while I was waiting and when I saw what we got I was disappointed. I don't remember the name of the noodle plate I got since I don't have the menu but it was basically a chicken lo mein. It was a tad smaller than average and I don't like the concept of them charging more for dinner time for the same thing. The other entree was the bun curi and the dish didn't make any sense. They served it strangely. It was a bowl of curry and a separate plate of rice noodle. The curry was very bland and watery. The carrots were not completely peeled and the vegetables look like they were chopped by a 5 year old. The rice noodles that came with this were dry and hard. Recap- slow service, inexperienced service, food takes a long time to come out unless you order pho and its only okay. Not special enough for the higher prices. The environment is loud and the decor is modern and nice. There's so much potential here, so much disappointment. read more
