Like a lot of single family homes in Chicago, I have a metal gate between the sidewalk and the front door. And, like virtually everyone on the planet by now, I spend nearly my entire paycheck on Stuff From Amazon. Which means I get lots of packages from Amazon. But I can't be home to receive them, because I need to go to work to make money to buy all the Stuff From Amazon. And, if I'm not home, I have to either 1) leave my gate unlocked and risk people stealing packages or 2) leave my gate locked and hope that my Stuff From Amazon can survive a toss over the gate or that the delivery person does not just take it to some remote package pickup place.
So, I bought a Doorbird (I'm going to mention the product a lot because it was difficult for me to figure out who the heck could install this thing, so this might help others). Why Doorbird? Well, there are a lot of "smart" doorbells on the market (Ring, Skybell, Greet, etc), with cameras and apps that allow you to view the feed remotely, but as far as I could tell, there were none that could actually leverage the electric strike capability built into most of the aforementioned metal gates. What good does it do me to see that there's a delivery guy hoping to drop a package off, if I'm stuck at work and can't actually let him inside the gate?
Doorbird appears to be the only consumer grade product that has this functionality. Problem is, it's a German company that appears to be in 80 bazillion markets, and in trying to service them all they've created a product that is not very easy to install. At first, in conjunction with fixing my metal gate so it would close, I tried to get the gate contractor to install it. Although they promised they could, ultimately they could only mount it and tell me why they didn't have the necessary parts to hook it up.
Then I called an electrician. Although he's done great work in the past, he must have been in a crummy mood, because he came over on a Saturday to tell me he could not hook it up ("it would be a 3 hour minimum job" that he didn't have time for) before even looking at it. He also made fun of me for being such a sucker consumer that believed in the promises of the product.
I'm frustrated. I figured if an electrician couldn't do this, who could? But after reading about their intercom expertise, I gave Non-Stop a call. Glad I did. Their technician (who came out the next morning from my 3 pm call) was actually very fluent about Doorbird. He knew exactly why I got it, and all about how finnicky the installation process is ("is the manual still in German?"). It took him an hour and a half to get it all working, and I'm thrilled with the result. And from talking with him about my search for the perfect doorbell for my setup, it was apparent these guys know everything there is to know about intercom systems. Frankly, if you don't know what you should get, consider calling them first before you buy something. I love the Doorbird, but everyone's setup is different.
I would have never guessed that "locksmith" is where you go to find an intercom specialist who can navigate difficult installations. But that's exactly what these guys are. read more
