Very eye opening experience! Had dinner the previous night at a restaurant next door (Ba Ghetto) which was welcoming and amazing! Had excellent service in addition to the amazing food! Therefore, made reservation for dinner at Nonna Betta with similar expectations. Seated in the side "over-flow" area despite making reservations. Prompt service initially. Food was decent. After food was served, we had only limited oversight and the staff was oblvious to our presence. While paying the bill, wanted to use the restroom and the staff questioned our presence at the restaurant. Was very shocked and the request seemed very judgmental. Family including children were shocked and upset. Unfortunately, ruined a reasonable meal. Would not recommend spending your hard earned money at this establishment due to the staff's preconceived mindset. While the front desk eventually was apologetic, this kind of behavior is very offsetting and unacceptable especially in this setting. read more

I was very disappointed by this restaurant after being excited to try a different twist on food in Rome. The menu is way Overpriced considering poor food quality and poor service in comparison to the other restaurants in Rome. The bread was hard/stale tasting and the pasta was bland. I always look forward to Roman Jewish food whenever I'm in town. I had not heard of this place until recently, so the anticipation was high. We took a wrong turn in the tight ghetto streets, which put us one street east of where we should be. And then lo and behold, there were film trucks and trailer everywhere. A crew guy told us we can't go any further, so we circled back and took another route. This is as la dolce vita as it could get. We were half expecting Alec Baldwin or some such celebrity to pp out all of a sudden. When we finally got to Nonna Betta, it turned out the scene is being shot just a little up the block on Via del Portico D'ottavia. Anyway... on to Nonna Betta. This is the first time at the Jewish ghetto restaurant where the menu is separated according to Kosher tradition. A shared plate of seafood fritti is excellent as only the Romans can do. My partner had the amatriciana alla giudia, and all night, we were guessing at what meat was used in place of pancetta. For me though, the revelation was the tagliolini bottarga e cicoria. Perfectly al dente pasta, with crumbled bottarga faintly hinting of the sea. The subtle astringent chicory rounds out the flavor very nicely. The restaurant is also a lovely little place, in contrast to the big tourist traps next door. Why 4 stars? I don't have a Nonna Betta, and know no other grandma who cooks like that. read more

Nonna Betta was good. Not great as I expected. Maybe the worst thing that happened to this place is a) tourist and b) public notoriety. I ate here on my last night in Rome. My whole trip I was so anxious to eat in the famous Jewish Ghetto and Nonna Betta was the hot place to go. I was solo so I didn't worry about not having a reservation. However, I suggest getting a reservation. I am from the US and don't put American expectations on Italian restaurants but I felt the service was a bit odd. By the time I got to Nonna Bette I was pretty familiar with Italian restaurant culture. They didn't seem that busy at the time but the host was running around like a chicken with his head cut off and totally ignoring me and another group of people that were waiting to be seated. I had no reservation so I didn't mind waiting but it got so bad that another group of diners asked me if I was ok. Finally the host greeted me and was kind of snappy. He barely cleared a table for me. When I say barely I mean he removed dirty plates and didn't bother to put down a new placemat, table cloth or even dust off the crumbs from the previous diners. It was kind of gross.... I'll move on. The main event: the food. I ordered the fried artichoke as it was artichoke season and Rome is known for that. It was tasty. My main course: a simple pasta dish was good. Not as good as Cacio e Pepe (highly suggest Cacio e Pepe in the Prati area) but fair. All in all I found the waiters at other roman restaurants a lot more welcoming. I didn't know if I was treated weird because I was American or a woman dining solo. AVOID THIS PLACE! I cannot believe the dishes they try to pass off as edible. Listen, I understand touristy places having lived in Miami, but the touristy places I have been to at least made an effort to creating dishes that are at the very least edible. The garbage that was served here I wouldn't dare feed my dogs (or the Roman pigeons for that matter). Just because I'm an American tourist doesn't mean I don't know good food. I ordered some fried mozzarella with anchovy and it was tasteless to the point of gross. My husband ordered an egg pasta that I couldn't imagine would actually come with scrambled egg in it. I ordered gnocchi a la Romana, it was essentially bread with melted cheese on top. We let them know we hated everything, they took our dishes and just never returned. I was looking forward to trying this place with my wife. We reserved a table and when we got there they had many tables available but added a table right by the menus on the street. The restaurant was not busy so it felt like they were using us to advertise by putting us in such a high-traffic area. We asked to be seated in the restaurant and once we moved then no one came by for over 30 minutes. We ordered the fried artichoke, carbonara and pasta with ragu. The food was fine but not in comparison with everything else delicious you can find in Rome. I heard that this was recommended by Anthony Bourdain and feel like a sucker for believing the hype. Maybe it was an off day. Maybe I shouldn't expect too much in the tourist ridden area of the Jewish Ghetto. Not sure I fully understand all these rave reviews. Everything was pretty heavy handed, be it the grease on the fried things or the cheese in the lasagna. The bread you must get and pay for was probably the worst bread we've had in Italy. The fried cod was delicious. The pasta dishes were fine. They charged us for an extra glass of wine and a dessert we didn't order, but took it off the bill immediately and without any fuss. Came here with family of five after colosseum tour. Wanted to try the artichokes. Staff was kind. Was seated right away. Food was just ok Daughter had roasted eggplant and cheese and enjoyed it. Son had pasta w ragu - the noodles were thick and more meat than sauce (though that may be just how they make it here), gnocchi was ok, son had lamb chops and was not impressed (said it didn't have much flavor), and husband had beef stew - well it was just meat and it was nothing special - just meat. I almost never give 5 stars but the food was so wonderful, I have to in order to tell you how good the food is in this restaurant. I have never had pasta so fresh. It melts in your mouth! We started with the fried artichoke which was quite tasty. The heart was a little mushy, but tasty. The leaves were crunchy and also tasty. There were four of us so we ordered two and shared. I almost wish we didn't have to share but I would have been too full in the end. Husband and I both ordered the pasta with artichokes. Steve ordered the lasagne with artichokes and Ann ordered the pasta with chicory. We all finished every bite on our plates. This is our last day in Italy and I did not try any desserts during my entire trip. So this was the occasion to do it. I really loved the wait staff here. Super friendly and welcoming. No wait around 2 in afternoon. Almost all Americans eating there. I had the famous Jewish artichoke. It was good but I don't get the hoopla. I also had tuna with wine sauce. It was actually a perfect light meal in the midst of lots of pasta and pizza. It wasn't over the top with flavor but a welcome break from the heavier stuff. I think this is an okay restaurant. I want it to do well bc of the awesome people who work there but as for the two dishes that I had- it was just okay. On our first night in Rome we were told we had to go to Nonna Betta. We made our way to the Jewish Ghetto and sat outside. It was so much fun to watch the neighbors walk by--priests enjoying gelato, neighbors pinching kiddos cheeks, grandmothers sitting together gossiping on benches, the grandfather's across the way, a woman waved down from her 3rd story apartment. It was wonderful! Our waiter was really nice. We had a few apps--it was artichoke season so we got fried artichokes, we also got carozza (fried mozzerella and anchovies), and some fried cod. All were delicious! Lots of fried apps, ha. For dinner, I got the Roman gnocchi--it was served in a small, hot crock and had a delicious (rich!) sauce. This was the best meal we had during our 5 day stay in Rome. We tried the Jewish artichoke, artichoke lasagna (notice a theme) and eggplant Parmesan. All were delicious, but I am a sucker for eggplant Parmesan so that was my hands down favorite. The Jewish artichoke was a great appetizer. The lasagna was good, but it had a white sauce which is not my preference. We went on a Wednesday around 5. The restaurant was nearly empty so it was an extra treat to have the place to ourselves. Best meal I had in Rome. The fried artichokes are a must! They are light, flaky, and not too greasy. The pastas were very good. Large portion sizes. We had the carbonara and a pasta with lamb in a spicy red sauce (pretty amazing)! Then we had the lamb sweetbread with artichokes. This plate was so good it brought me to tears! The waiter said you either love the dish or hate it. The sweetbread was so tender, and the tangy lemon sauce with artichokes was the perfect compliment. Recommend getting the house wine. Waiter said it's the better deal, and kept refilling our carafe. This is also the place featured on No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain (he got the fried artichokes). Mark Zuckerberg ate here on his honeymoon, but didn't tip. I recommend tipping, the waitstaff are great and deserve it! read more

Despite being busy and not having a reservation they were graciously able to find a table for one. It's artichoke season and I was really looking forward to Carciofi alla giudìa. I went with the Antipasto Nonna Betta (artichoke, cod, fried flower, fried mozzarella and Concia marinated zucchini Jewish Style) which was absolutely amazing. The food and the service we absolutely wonderful and in fact it was so good that I returned on Sunday for another amazing meal. Nonna was a lovely walk from The Kolbe Hotel. We had a wonderful table in a quiet spot. In front of the restaurant. The owner was gracious and helpful. The waiter playful and generous with care. I am a celiac and generally haven't been able to eat pasta dishes Italy. Some restaurants offer a gluten free options but it is always penne with a bland sauce. Nonna makes a excellent gluten free pasta and I was able to enjoy. The traditional cacio and Pepe with chicory. A must try. Another must try is, of course the fried artichokes. Delicious. I followed with a second plate of stewed beef in spicy tomato sauce. Tender cuts of beef that melt in the mouth. My wife went straight to desert and when she struggled to choose the waiter brought her a selection of all of them. Good house wine. Great food. Fine service. read more
