If you're looking for classic Roman fare in a classic Roman environment, look no further than Da Tonino. Highly recommended to me by Yelp Intern Emily F, I was really excited to grab some pasta and artichoke after a fairly underwhelming "food tour" my first night in Rome. I believe this place usually has a line, but on the weeknight in the off season that I arrived, I was sat right away. I dug into some cacio e pepe after asking my server his thoughts, and also started with the stewed artichoke. I wish I was there with a group so I could've eaten even more, but this is a great spot to dine solo. Other reviewers rating this on the lower end are probably more suited to the tourist traps. At least give a go at ordering in Italian and be sure to order off each section of the menu if possible. Otherwise, you aren't going to go wrong with a big plate of pasta and some vino. Excellent service and delicious Roman fare. I had the Pasta Al Pesto and Coda something (Ox Tail). Both were amazing and affordable. The ox tail was just like my Nonna Pedie made when I was younger. The Pasta al Pesto was the most savory, delicious I have ever eaten. It was like a buttery-garlic-pamesian explosion with every single bite of pasta cooked perfectly al dente. Located in a quaint part of Rome and easily accessible from my suite, I was able to people watch all the while having passersby stop to see what I was eating and ultimately decide to come in. The place closes at 3pm and re-opens at 7pm for dinner. I arrived exactly at 7 and was seated immediately. This place is everything you would expect from a trattoria! A traditional old world feel but a bit more charismatic. Sure the service is a bit clunky but the place is small with a line of people out the door so patience and good company help make this spot worth the wait. Yelpers got this one wrong, big time. I love the feel of this little mom-and-pop neighborhood restaurant, but it was overall a big disappointment. The atmosphere is cozy and old school Italian, and the menu seems to be reasonably priced -- until you are actually served your food and you see what's given to you. First off, the pasta here is NOT fresh. It's not even freshly made, it's dried noodles. Eating carbs is a true luxury for me, and I still hate myself nearly two years later for eating the pasta here. As with most places in Italy, the bread basket is not free. It's placed on your table but if you so much as touch a slice, you're going to be paying for it. The meatballs are good so if you must eat here, order those. They aren't life changing meatballs, but they are hearty and pretty tasty. The artichoke didn't feel very fresh either, it was sort of lifeless and swimming in a pool of mediocre olive oil (with the most likely intention of the cook to hide the taste). And there's something that stings a little bit when you can hear the sound of a microwave running in the kitchen. Note that the dining room is extremely cramped. We felt like we were sitting at a communal table with the people next to us. I was actually freaking out and worrying about how the hell I was going to get out when we were finished eating. Cute little restaurant and perfect for a party of 2 or 4 because not much room . We decided on an artichoke and meat plate as appetizer and then followed with Pasta Carbonara and pasta with eggplant ! Both were good but we leaned towards the eggplant as our favorite . Service was polite and helpful, well priced , food came out quickly and great portion sizes but most importantly was delicious! I can recommend Da Tonino, a nice small mom and pop style restaurant in Rome. The food here was great, I tried two dishes, the Pasta Carbonara, and the meatballs. In hindsight, this was overkill for lunch. The portions are generous, and a plate of pasta is more than enough for a hearty lunch. The little bits of bacon/ham in my Pasta Carbonara, were a huge delight. Something about chunks of pork fat in my pasta is appealing on so many levels. My only regret is not being able to try all the different pasta sauces available. I would have loved to try the arrabiata or amatriciana sauces. The gnocchi and Gricia looked good as well. Perhaps next time. I arrived at Noon on a Monday. Maybe it's early in the day for lunch, but I was able to get a table with no problem. That being said, there were a number of people that came in, and Da Tonino filled quickly. Even still there were a few tables available when we finished. We were recommended this place by our airbnb owner. It was just down the street and is a popular place for local Romans to eat at. So much so, that we had to wait outside for 15-20 minutes for a table. They have about 12 tables crammed inside, so you will be sitting close to others dining, which we didn't mind. The food and service were awesome, and the menu had a lot of choices. The prices were a couple euro less than most other places in the area. They don't have fancy wine glasses and the decor is pretty plain, but it felt like you were eating with at a big Italian family dinner. We were sitting next to a group of 4 guys that were fairly entertaining too. This was our first dinner in Italy, and we didn't know they order a first dish and a second to follow of meat or fish. The pasta dishes were hand made and the meatballs were huge! They offer litre and half litre house wine at a decent price too. The tiramisu dessert was very good as well. Highly recommend giving this place a try, as long as you don't mind rubbing shoulders with your neighbours. read more

There is a particular restaurant who I believe has the best tasting pasta I have ever tasted. It's in NYC and ever since I tried pasta in Rome, I would compare it to that one restaurant. I tried the pasta here and it hit the mark with its pasta! The pasta in this restaurant is handmade, as well as the restaurant in NY. Da Tonino, has one of the best tasting pasta in Rome. Literally tatses like grandma's cooking. They offer different types of meats as well and these tasted phenomenal. You will not be disappointed. Try to get there around 12PM before it gets too full. Da Tonino was one of our favorite meals in Rome. We walked by around 7 pm when the restaurant first opened and after a little indecision, sat down at 7:15. In 10 minutes, the place was packed and there was a line to get in. Talk about great timing . . . We ordered the Pasta Carbonara, Oxtails and Chicory (because unfortunately, the large group ahead of us had ordered the last artichoke). The pastas are made with a heaping portion of thick rigatoni which made the Carbonara tasty but very filling. The Oxtails were braised in a tomato sauce with carrots and celery until the meat fell off the bones. This dish was delicious, rustic and what I imagine Roman home-cooking to be like. Did I mention that the portions were huge here? Finally, the Chicory we ordered for something green and healthy. They were stringy but eased our guilt of eating all these fatballs. All in, dinner with wine was less than US$40. Da Tonino wasn't the best or fanciest meal we had in Rome. In fact, the wine we had with dinner was quite bad by Italian standards. However, Da Tonino is memorable for the family atmosphere, the huge portions of soulful food, the friendly service and the energy of the small dining room. I highly recommend this place. read more

We ate here on our last night in Rome. I found this place by using the Yelp app on my phone and was happy to find a more "local" place to get some good, Italian food. Very tiny place and the name is barely visible on the door but we found it! It was packed with people but they were able to sit our party of 6. When I went to the bathroom, you have a clear shot of vision into the kitchen. tiny tiny kitchen with one person running around back there. This was wonderful to see because you can tell it was going to be fresh ingredients and made with love. I ordered the ravioli and a bottle of the house white wine. Ravioli were delicious and the red sauce that came with them was stellar. The wine was everything I would expect from a house white, nothing special. Someone at our table ordered the meatballs, these were huge and also delicious. Only thing I didn't really enjoy were the attitudes of the staff there. I would probably give this place 3.5 stars, but since that's not an option I'll round up. We had read Da Tonino fills up quickly with locals so we tried to get there as close to opening (7PM) as possible. At 7:15 the restaurant was probably 75% full, which to me is a good sign. We were seated right away and bread was brought to our table -- but be aware that they do charge you for it whether or not you ask for it Since we had aperitivo a few hours earlier we weren't starving so we decided to skip antipasto and secondi, and just order primi pasta dishes. My husband got the penne all'Arrabbiata -- tasty with a good amount of spice. I tried the rigatoni carbonara and didn't care for it at all. That being said, it was my first time trying true Roman carbonara and plenty of folks in the restaurant were devouring their fair share, so we'll chalk that up to personal preference. We also split a liter of house red wine. Quite acidic but it grew on me after a while -- plus it's only €10! The pasta itself was decent but cooked more than al dente and didn't seem freshly made. Service was much better than your average tableside service in Italy. We came here as recommended by a friend as well as Pizzeria Da Baffetto which is also down the street from here. Both these places are excellent and if you are visiting Rome you have to go here. Because you are in such close quarters we started talking to an older British couple in the table beside us and one of their questions to us was "so how did you find this place?" But it's bacon and cheese and egg so that has to be good right? The veal chunks were tender. The bread was stone cold and not that flavorful but it was nice to have with some of the juices of the veal dish. House wine was inexpensive but, warning, tasted so. We split the two plates and that was enough for us. For those on a budget in Rome you could do far worse. Our total was around 30euro for bread, sparkling water, 1 liter of Vino de rosso, and 2 dishes. They just bring you the bread and there is a charge. We arrived at the restaurant around 1:45 PM and there was line waiting to get in. We decided to wait. We waited outside for about 15 minutes and the line grew longer. We were finally ushered into the restaurant. We should have left as soon as we saw the cramped quarters. They squeezed you in like sardines in a can. It was the most uncomfortable setting. Just getting into our table was difficult - we had to hit so many people going in. The problem with this restaurant is that we did not have 1 waiter to serve our table; but several - two guys and a gal. We were finally able to order. They brought regular glasses and a 1/2 liter of red wine (€5). We asked for wine glasses and were told to use the glasses they gave us. I explained that we had also ordered a liter of water and a 1/2 liter of white wine (€5). They finally brought the water, the wine glasses and 2 quarter-liters of white wine. The white wine was horrible - tasted like vinegar. I did send back the second, untouched quarter liter, so they only charged us for a 1/4 liter (€3) They served very crusty bread with our meal. I ordered the peas and mushroom pasta (€8). My husband ordered the steak with roasted potatoes, only to be told that they were out of both. So we were off to a very poor start - horrible white wine and 2 of the things we ordered were not available. He then ordered meat balls (€8). The food finally arrived. The service was so inattentive and certainly not what I would consider friendly. The food was actually not bad. However, we would never return because there is no ambience in this restaurant and the idea of being sandwiched in at a table is so unappealing. We, therefore, do not recommend this restaurant. I visit this place for lunch at least twice on my visit to Rome each year. I give my name to the server and stand outside drooling as I see the patrons inside enjoying their pasta alla gricia, straccetti con rughetta, carciofi e brocoletti. Ok, I'm salivating just writing this! Once you finally squeeze your way through the maze of tables, you'll be given a menu, though the regulars don't ever need one. The waiters are more than willing to verbally run down the menu for you, if you so dare! As with every good restaurant in Italy, you will want to order the house wine. You'll be shocked at the price, and the taste! Come hungry, because you will want to save room for a pasta dish and a secondo (rabbit is a favorite of mine, as is the straccetti - thin slices of beef topped with arugula, though you can't go wrong with the polpette: meatballs). Expect to hear mostly Italian. Not many tourists are lucky enough to find this place! But, if you are lucky enough to stumble upon Da Tonino, which is just a short stroll from Piazza Navona, you won't be disappointed!
