After breakfast at Eggheads (delicious crab omelet) I asked about the little restaurant next door, Nit's. The waitress & a couple of customers told me that its hours were erratic but the food was excellent. Around mid-afternoon while exploring Fort Bragg's funky shopping area east of Hwy 1, I noticed that the sign in Nit's window was turned to "open." I went in, I was the only customer. Nit greeted me & we talked about the menu, which was copied from a hand-written sheet of paper. Not so professional, but original. I ordered the "Pan roasted salmon, pan roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables, citrus beurre blanc"- one of only 4 entrees on the menu. It was spectacular, one of the tastiest restaurant meals I've had. I was so satisfied that I told Nit I'd probably come in for dinner to have her Pad Thai. Nit proved to be a delightful host, we talked about many things. I did go back later for the Pad Thai, the portion was large & it tasted at least as delicious as the salmon. Nit said it was her most popular dish. I now have a favorite restaurant in Fort Bragg. read more

My wife had eaten here once before and raved about the food, though noting that Nit could be a bit eccentric. I love Thai food and was looking forward to eating here. We spent approximately an hour seated, but i did not have the pleasure of tasting anything. My wife and i sat for about twenty minutes watching Nit converse with people at another table. She then came over to take our order. We then waited another thirty minutes, while Nit resumed her conversation with the other table. She then brought over a small dish we hadn't ordered. We were hoping to get her attention, but she then disappeared in the kitched. We waited another ten minutes, then put money on the table to cover the plate she brought us and left. I trust my wife and i'm sure that most of the time, Nit eccentricities are more charming than frustrating and one is served a wonderful meal. But the problem is that we live in the Bay Area and when we are in the Mendocino area, it is only for a few days of R&R. Knowing that we might catch Nit on one of her bizarre nights is too big a risk given that there are numerous other places in the Fort Bragg/Mendocino area where we know we can have an enjoyable evening. read more

Here's the deal with Nit's - you're definitely in for a treat if you follow this lead. First off, don't be put off by the prices because the portions are extremely large, literally encouraging you to share everything with your partner, and saving you $$. Don't even think about getting your own anything - soup, app, entree - you must share it all. Have fun choosing together from the amazingly broad and creative menu and enjoy the thoughtful, artistic and delicious creations Nit makes to order. She's fantastic and eclectic, the food is truly great (it's organic, free range, local everything) and you get a deal on a wonderful experience. We got out of there for $36 sharing an amazing (and enormous) organic summer squash soup, a (also enormous) Vietnamese yellow curry lamb entree and beer/wine. We're in SF but will be back to Ft Bragg to see Nit again. read more

It sounds like Nit's is either very good or very bad. We had the later experience. Visiting Nit's was just plain weird. When we arrived, there was an open sign but the door was locked. We tried the door and Nit opened it and let us in. Big mistake. As she strangely backed into the restaurant, we had misgivings about eating there . We had communication difficulties ordering, and as we asked about the dishes, she squatted lower and lower next to the table, Nit didn't seem to understand the concept of vegetarian. We assumed that English was not her first language. We finally gave her our order and she disappeared into the back for what seemed a very long time. We heard the radio, some pans crashing, and some yelling, but we never knew if someone else was there or if she was yelling at herself. The food did finally arrive, but was not what we ordered, particularly the vegetarian order. Nit brought the check without asking if we wanted dessert. When we asked, she said she was out of dessert. We paid and left as quickly as we could. The only two people who came in during this long period of time were still there. read more

Don't let the looks fool you. From the outside this place looks small and uninteresting, but my goodnesss. There is one server and one chef who is the owner. She cooks everything to order and it is amazing. The best meal I have had in a long long time. If it was closer I would be quite the regular here. Goodness gracious sakes alive! This Pad Thai was expensive! Was it worth it? The shrimps were a nice size, as was the serving size, but $25.00 for Pad Thai? The dish was presented as brightly and overdone as the owner/cooks makeup. The owner was also the cook, hostess and waitress and wrote nothing down. Despite the size of the shrimp, the pad thai was way too greasy for my liking. While this place comes with great reviews and recommendations from the locals in Fort Bragg,this place is nothin' to brag about! My friend ordered the seafood dish (the price tag on this was again, way out of range with the meal). The menu did not suggest what we received for unbeknownst to us, it was deep fried in a thick tasteless batter. It came with French fries, some sort of veggie, (we couldn't make it out,) and a wet slop of coleslaw. We were almost going to send the dish back, but the scallops were okay. We paid the high price and didn't bother to ask for a doggie bag. The place was a disappointment. read more

We'd read the reviews before vacationing in Fort Bragg, and made a point of heading to Nit's for dinner. We were thrilled we did. Hand's down the best Thai food we've both had in ages, and that's saying a lot, living in the Bay area as we do. It's a solo enterprise, so if she's busy it will take a while, and her menu is understandably limited - it's worth it. We hope to be able to try more of her dishes someday. Wish this restaurant was located nearby - I'd eat there regularly. read more

A disaster. The orders had no relationship to the menu. I had ordered fish. It arrived whole, (cod I suspect) deeply fried, and apparently frozen when it was caught privately off the rocks nearby, without cleaning it. The vegetables were overdone, soggy or deep fried also, horrid. My friends got a soup they could not eat, they were expecting a vegetable soup with tofu. Theirs was what seemed to be a can of coconut milk with chunks of carrots and zucchini here and there, no tofu (I am out of that) and pieces of lime to squeeze here and there. The spring roll was a weird noodle-like substance around lettuce leaf chunks. It cost $55 for that mess. We were the only diners there at 6 pm on a Saturday night. I should have checked Yelp before we went to NIt's this evening. I am still in shock over our dining experience and I'm being very generous in calling it a dining experience. My husband ordered the seafood combination platter; he received a plate of fried fish with two lime slices. I ordered pad thai; I received a plate of fried fish with two lime slices. Seriously. Our friend order the vegetarian curry. He received a large bowl containing a thin white liquid that tasted like watered down canned coconut milk and what appeared to be a whole bunch of broccoli stems and a pound of mushy tofu. I don't know how he ate it. I still feel a little shaky from the small amount of fish that I ate. Why did we not complain when we received our order? We did not want to make a fuss in front of our visitor, and there was no way we could have known just how bad the food was until we tasted it. We should have gotten up and left, but being the polite fools that we are, we paid $127 for the above and for three bowls of soup ($15 each) which consisted of broth with heavy spices, which my husband and I did not order. When my husband questioned Nit about the bill, she said our friend had ordered it, so we left it at that out of respect for our friend. DO NOT eat here. I am a local and I will never enter this restaurant again. Jenny's Giant Burger (up the street a few blocks) is a much better choice. McDonald's would have been a better choice. I realize that I sound harsh in this review, but the experience was harsh; one I hope never to repeat. . A perfect Friday the 13th meal. Beware. read more

I am sick and was craving curry knowing that my taste and smell were almost completely gone and what better than a little spice? I first tried Viraporn's, our only other Thai place, to find that... What do u know they are closed for the winter, which is no surprise because they seem to be closed more often than not lately. Then I remembered Nit's and her many amazing reviews and my infrequent visits as a teenager. I called and ordered the chicken curry for me and spring rolls for my husband, I could hear her bustling around in her kitchen while she placed my order which reminded me that she was running the entire restaurant by her self. When I arrived she boxed my food which may have been my impeccably late timing or her professional views on fresh food, I'll never know. Her restaurant and food are an extension of her and it is an incredibly beautiful thing. If you are in the mood for Thai food cooked with such love and passion it will make you feel just eating it... Would like a small independent restaurant do well in a town I enjoy. Sadly this is the second time we have had meal poorly prepared. Ordered the "fresh Halibut" which was fried with fried and underdone carrots and potatoes and a vinegar sauce. Also ordered the Chinese salad with prawns but got a Chinese tofu salad with unpeeled cucumbers. It was served after the halibut entree. The Thai tea was served without a cup. Cook presumably Nit was friendly and restaurant clean with no inside restroom. read more

I love Thai food and Nit's tops my list. The Tom Gai Yum soup was flavorful and the Pad Thai was delicious. I was surprised to find Asian food this good in small Fort Bragg. We had to take the spring rolls to go since the servings were so generous. We will be back for another excellent Nit meal. read more

About five years ago eavesdropping on a conversation about an amazing meal, I ousted myself and asked what they where speaking of. "Nit's Cafe" came the reply. I have come to find out the chef/owner was the former chef of the Moose Café in Mendocino before she left to start her own endeavor. This solo chef restaurant has been a serious foodies Mecca for me and family since. Nit does it all, preps all of her own meez, local fisherman bring her the ones that didn't get away and that becomes her specials. If you like Bullibase, go no further, as Nit's version rivals that of Paris bistros that have been pasted down through generations! The plates are master designed with whatever she whimsically has at hand. She carries a short list of the local wines, Navarro being one that always complements the fresh catch of the day. In all the times that I have experienced her cooking; I have never been disappointed in her technique or command of the individually prepared dish. This spicy little eatery is not to be missed on your experience to the north coast as it will become a centerpiece of the trip. read more

This is my 2nd time visiting Ft Bragg, before we left, i went online checking out all the good places to eat, and Nits Cafe caught my attention. We went for Dinner, the sign on the door says open at 5.30, we went around 6 and the door was still locked. But some lady ( i suppose was the owner ) with weird make up came running to unlock the door and let us in. I almost collapsed, the restaurant smelled like rotten fish. There were like 20 flies around the kitchen area which we could see clearly from our table. OK she was all smiles, ran to the back came with menu which was dripping with water, god know why...by this time u could literally see the dismay on my face. I told my husband lets get out of this place. I dont think i will ever ever go back Nits Cafe. read more

the only reason this is not a 5 star is the pricing. A bit expensive for Fort Bragg. ($23 for entree) The red curry ,organic brown rice, vegetables, and chicken was excellent and I believe Nit uses alot of organic. Water even tasted good. Fresh fragrant flowers, a smily Nit, a pleasant atmosphere and food presentation add to make this dining experience worthy of future return trips. read more

We were happily surprised by this low price healthy option for great food in Fort Bragg. We asked for Pad Ki Mai Gao instead of Pad Thai and it was delicious. Also another surprise was we ordered what we thought would be a regular green salad but it was wonderful with a subtle salad dressing and fresh fruit (in our case strawberries, mandarin and apple). That salad was worthy of a high priced restaurant and the best one we've had north of the Bay Area! read more

We have been coming to Nit's for six years, and each time was a wonderful experience---great food, good service, expensive but worth it. Last summer, however, we noticed that the food was not prepared as carefully, as Nit had become the hostess and waitress and cook. Last weekend we had friends staying with us who had never experienced Nit's so we took them there, without even looking at the menu on the window. We were shocked to find only about 5 choices, and all of the wines were $50 or $15 a glass!! We had always ordered her wonderful Caesar--not on the menu. My husband loves her signature chicken dishes--not on the menu. We ordered the Pad Thai ($25) and Chicken curry.(also $25) The curry was served in a bowl with no rice, 5 bites of chicken and nothing else. My Pad Thai, which the menu described as chicken, shrimp & tofu had no shrimp, and the chicken was hard ( plus a big piece of skin was buried under the noodles). At least it was edible, as the curry was not. Twice, while we were eating, Nit asked if we wanted to box up what was left--we weren't done eating!! It was only 7 pm and there were no other diners--she just wanted to get rid of us and go home. We were not asked if we wanted dessert or coffee--just got the bill slapped down with our boxes. Is she trying to destroy the business? We'll never go there again, and as we left we looked up at Mendo Bistro, wishing we had gone there. read more

Came here for Valentines Day dinner. That was my first mistake. The food here is hit or miss I think. I've been here twice and have gotten dishes that were okay to very good. However, the prices are outrageous. I guess they try to justify it by giving you huge proportions - which I don't need. I think the owner is just trying to keep overhead costs down so on Valentine's night - she is the only cook and then there is one waiter that speaks limited English. (Just two of them on a busy holiday Sunday night!) Poor thing is very efficient and working like death. I do appreciate it but when you are charging 4 star prices, I do expect 4 star service as well as food. She was so busy that we never got to hear the specials - she was so distracted - never told us. I saw some delicious clams at another table and wanted to inquire about them (not on menu) but felt bad and didn't because she couldn't even look at us long enough to take our order. She didn't tell the specials to the next three patrons but then near the end of our dinner when things are dying down - I heard her tell another table the specials. We didn't get any bread for a long time and felt totally neglected the whole time. Again, if she lowered the prices even if she gives us regular portions - I wouldn't feel so gouged.
