Decided to go here as a pit stop between shopping and dinner, and thought it would be a solid choice given the ratings and proximity to the ocean. Indoors was smaller than anticipated but that's okay. Got some gyoza and a tempura roll. Gyoza was okay but it's rare that gyoza is anything above that. Tempura roll was doused in eel sauce which took away from any potential flavor. The tempura I had without sauce was a good flavor. Will probably go somewhere else next time unless I'm coming here for lunch because then - I will have to try the ramen.

The staff were friendly, helpful, and prepared the poke I ordered to my desired spice preference. Not to mention, it was delicious and reasonably priced.

Gnar Bar is a casual Japanese/Hawaiian spot if you want to grab a quick sit-down meal! This was our first meal as dinner in Mendocino after we checked into our B&B. We were tired from our drive up and ready for a tasty but fast meal. Saw the cute sign on the corner and had to drop in. I got the salmon teriyaki bowl and my husband got the combo (tuna + salmon) poke bowl. We're prioritizing eating all the seafood this weekend and this hit the spot! The fish was very fresh. My salmon teriyaki wasn't overcooked and very tender. I loved the tangy but not too sweet teriyaki sauce. Staff were very friendly and the food came out quickly. We may come back to grab some rolls or musubis to eat on the beach!

Top quality food and service made at the time of order. A real surprise to find this place considering how good it is. Coming to Mendocino? You have to stop in everything tastes amazing! The prices are just as fantastic. Oh. They have vegan options too

Will return! Great quality fresh fish and greens. I'm vegan husband pescatarian. I got vegan roll, he got poke bowl. Everything was fresh and tasty. The micrograms and homemade sauces were super yummy. Great prices, everyone was supper accommodating with our requests. You need to stop by.

We stopped in for a late afternoon lunch while visiting Mendocino. We ordered two sushi rolls and the Brussels sprouts. After ordering we were told they were out of something in one of the rolls and asked if they could just make us something - we were game And then we found out they were out of Brussels Sprouts so they ended up making something else for us that I didn't try because I was full, lol. The people were cool, the food was delicious, the town is adorable, and if we're ever back in Mendocino we will visit again.

Had a great lunch here, miso ramen with chicken, and the pork and shrimp shumai. It was all delicious and vs portions are huge. They offer limited counter seating and take out. Definitely going back.

Visiting the Mendocino coast for the first time, we had a craving for ramen since it was a little chilly. Henry took great care of us and we really enjoyed the vegan broth ramen and the tonkatsu ramen with chicken. Both delicious as it's hard to get a vegetarian ramen broth right. Henry gave us a list of great recommendations and we really enjoyed the whole experience. It's a small spot so, definitely grab a chair if possible or I'm sure a to go option to sit by the ocean wouldn't be a bad idea either. Thanks for your hospitality and we will be back!

Beautiful poke bowl, yummy spam musubi, and great service. Charming little place to grab a bite to eat. If you're hungry and in a hurry, grab the spam and go! Nice selection of hot sauces!

The spam musubi was one of the best I've had. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the ramen. I got the pork / chicken broth tonkotsu ($18) and added charchu to it (+$6). It is probably the worst restaurant ramen I've had to date. The broth seems to lack a tare base and tastes like one combined chicken and pork broth off the shelf together. It's just plain broth without any weight to it. The noodles were overcooked and had no give to it at all. The charchu was tasty, but I don't think it justifies a $6 price. My wife got the JD roll, and she said the ingredients were like an everything bagel minus one or two ingredients and stated it was ok.

    Yum!!! Chicken bowl delicious

Expensive for what you get. Their ramen and NorCal roll was just ok. But everything in this area is expensive.

I ordered the cold ramen salad because it was a warm day, and it was really exceptional. It has nicely chopped vegetables and everything was prepared perfectly. I also ordered the Japanese pickles appetizer and it was presented exquisitely. They have a variety of teas, including tea flights, and also serve bubble teas. I got one of the tea cocktails that had mango and shoju that was really good. Service is very gracious. We sat in their nice outdoor covered area. The shop inside had a lot of interesting looking tea-related items. They had some lovely looking tea sets and pots. Also some Japanese snacks!

Their decor is quirky and fun inside, with only a few tables, so reservations are recommended (although we managed to get a table walking in on a weekday afternoon). They have a massive selection of teas, pretty much any kind you can think of and then some, as well as an impressive selection of sake. Which all goes well with their ramen, which is the only thing we tried this time. It's not quite the typical ramen you would see at Japanese spots in SF or South Bay, but I imagine quite good for North Bay and tasty in their own right. I wouldn't mind going back even just for teas and sake and maybe some lighter bites.

The owner was telling me that she lived in Japan for several years and learned how to cook many of the dishes during her stay. A customer came in, ordered, and then she was off preparing his food. We decided to try: Chicken curry - Curry sauce was delicious. She does not mix in veggies but adds a few peas and carrots on top. I wish my curry tasted like hers Bento with mapo tofu - Mapo had perfect spiciness. For an additional $3, the bento comes with cabbage salad, scoop of rice, egg roll on top of a few noodles There is a pitcher of water and cups near the entry so you can help yourself. When your order is ready, the owner will call out the order and you go to the counter to pick it up. I did not notice any other people working with her so she takes care of cooking all the orders then wipes down tables and tidies up as people leave. For an informal meal that tastes like homemade, give this place a try. They offer vegetarian meals too.
