I've been wanting to return to this little hidden gem in walnut for quite sometime. Believe it or not I used work here as a server and sushi back in the early 90's during my college days....brought my wife here for an early wedding anniversary celebration. Ninja used to be my favorite place for sushi. I usually order the Deluxe Chirashi bowl, but it seems like the quality is getting worse each time. The pieces of fish is getting smaller and smaller. You barely get any uni, tuna, or salmon. The rice was also not prepared properly. It was like eating glutinous rice, because whoever cooked it used too much water. I'm sad to say that the next time I come back, I will no longer order the chirashi bowl. The price doesn't justify it. Instead, I would get a la carte sushi. The positive I can mention is that the lady who served us always provides good service. The deluxe chirashi and sushi come with a great selection of fish. The beef tataki is a flavorful appetizer and cooked very well. The soba and udon we ordered were cooked decently and overall every dish was good. The miso cod was great as well with the buttery sweet flavor. It's a quaint Japanese joint that gets busy very quickly. The Japanese server ladies are very cute and polite with their old lady demeanor. Along with your order, they'll just need your name and your phone number. They'll provide you with an estimated time to show up. You can pay when you get there. Once you're there, you'll notice that they've blocked the entrance into the dining area with a couple of tables. A hidden little gem in Walnut! If you're in the area and are looking for some delicious Japanese cuisine, this is where you want to go. Surprisingly fresh quality fish from this quaint spot and the customer service there is excellent. The restaurant is located in the Lemon Creek Village so there's ample parking, but be advised that because it's a small place, wait times can be a little long. Dined here on a Friday night, close to 8:00 p.m., for a party of two and still waited about 30 minutes before being seated. I've been here several times and haven't been disappointed with the quality of the food. Everything is pretty tasty and the wait-staff are very attentive and friendly. I normally order food off of the dinner combo menu and everything is always cooked to perfection. Combo meals come with a seaweed and cucumber salad that's sweet and tangy, regular salad with a house-made dressing, miso soup, and rice. Pro-tip as well: ask to have the teriyaki beef cooked medium-rare--scrumptious! Chirashi deluxe bowls are pricey, but well worth it, in my opinion. Pretty filling and come with a variety of fresh fish from the sushi bar. My favorite sushi rolls here are the spicy ninja roll and spicy scallop roll and I recommend getting at least one or two cut rolls for the table. The scallops are always sweet and fresh! I will say, however, that COVID has taken its toll on this restaurant and portions have gotten a little smaller than I remember. I ordered the sashimi and salmon shioyaki dinner combo recently and I kid you not... The salmon was so small that I finished it in less than four bites. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, but I wish the portion was a little bigger (definitely needed those sushi rolls to feel full).
