I came here again tonight and it was great (thus a review update!) The wait time wasn't too bad so we stuck around. I had the special of the night-- 6 pieces of sushi (yellowtail, salmon), tempura, ramen, and soup, salad, and rice for $17.95. Not bad at all! The sushi was soo fresh and just melted in your mouth. Tempura consisted of shrimp, bell pepper, broccoli, and sweet potato. The ramen had beef, tofu, mushrooms, and cabbage in a light beef broth. Miso soup, a salad (slice of orange, tomato, with a zesty orange dressing) and a bowl of rice rounded it out. Other people in my party ordered the chirashi bowl (so good!) and the beef and chicken teriyaki combo. I had a slice of the beef and chicken and it wasn't bad at all. We also ordered the grilled yellowtail collar, which was delicious, and extra pieces of salmon, yellowtail, and uni. The uni was sooo good too! My personal favorite handroll is the salmon skin. GET IT! It is unbelievably delicious-- I get salmon skin handrolls everywhere I go and this place has one of the best! Can't wait to come back again soon! read more

I drove all the way to order a take out from ninja sushi. I am a regular customer there for take out of Chirashi and combination lunch. Today's potato salad inside my chicken teriyaki combo box make me sick. The romaine lettuce is supposed to be in trash can. The lettuce is withered and deteriorated. It shouldn't appear in customer's plate. The restaurant staff should pay attention to the food they present to customer. It is a total disappointing experience today. read more

My family celebrated early Mother's day here for lunch on a Saturday. We called in early to get a spot for 6. This place's lunch prices are still pretty good. You can order the chirashi or sashimi special for around ~$17 and get a good 15 pieces of sashimi that are huge and high quality. On top of getting the Chirashi and Sashimi specials, we also ordered the Sherry Roll and Rainbow Roll. I liked the Sherry Roll more and thought the Ponzu sauce added a lot to the roll. read more

You know how in a lot of sushi restaurants, when you first walk in the door everyone is welcoming and screaming "irashaimase." However, at Nija Sushi, when my boyfriend and I walked in, it was quite awkward. The sushi chef seemed like he wanted to say it but instead whispered "irashaimase" and nodded at us. I didn't bother to look at the menu so I was only looking at the Ninja Specialty rolls under the glass on the table. Thus, I can only speak for the rolls. The rolls were extremely pricey though. Have seen this place in the Vons plaza for years but never had the opportunity to give it a try. Okay I lied, we judged a book by its cover lol. Tried this place the other day due to Imomo being closed constantly. Upon walking in we were greeted and seated by a nice lady. The decor is a bit dated I will say, but the quality of the food was surprisingly good! The sushi chefs seemed happy, chatty and cheerful. There are tv's in there which played some sports stuff. The hand rolls were fresh and so was the salmon teriyaki. I essp loved the miso soup and the cute little cup/bowl they serve it in. Service was quick and friendly. We shall return! read more

My family likes to come here during lunch hour, to have the lunch specials. For less than $10 a person, we can all be satisfied with our sushi cravings. Normally I would get the California Roll + Chicken Teriyaki Combo. I also really like the sashimi here, always fresh and beautifully cut. This place is really small though, and during busy hours, there will be a long wait. The prices are pretty decent as well. This place is a little bit hidden inside the plaza, right in the corner. Love this sushi place! Like other yelpers have mentioned, this place is hidden and tucked inside the corner of a Vons plaza. It's a pretty small place but they get crowded during lunch time so be sure to get there early to avoid the crowd! Their sashimis and sushi rolls are always fresh and delicious. And I also like to come here during lunch time to get their combination sets if I want a taste of everything from sushi to teriyaki to tempura. (because during dinner time the combos are TWICE the price!) Be sure to get the combos with sashimis in it! However, their service is almost non-existent. For the few times that we've been here, their services have been super slow. It was very hard to flag down a waitress. Yes, I know it's a busy place. But it's also a very small place. During our last visit, our cups were never filled and the waitress was only there for us when we ordered, after that, we never saw her again. Not to mention that she looked super miserable all the time. I wish someone would crack a joke and make her smile justttt a little more! My friends and I have been regulars at Ninja for awhile, but no longer! Customer service needs a makeover. Recently, we ordered three items including their spider roll. It took over 30 mins for a spider roll to appear on the counter but it was delivered to another table. The waitress was cleaning with her back turned to us. We asked her about our spider roll, and without even turning around or saying anything to us, she walked off and disappeared. She then came back with the bill, continued cleaning, and muttered "sorry huh" to herself. No words, no service, no tips! I've never expected great service from Ninja but I expect common courtesy from everyone. Too bad, because their food is great and affordable, but I would rather pay premium elsewhere. read more

Great sashimi and dinner plates. My wife likes the authentic Okinawan ramen. I Love this place because of the mom n pop feel. I think this place is owned n operated by a Japanese family. The two older Japanese ladies that serve you are adorable, helpful and friendly. The only better place I dine for Japanese cuisine is my Japanese grandma's house (not a fair comparison I know but this place is a very close second :) So far I have had the chicken and steak teriyaki, I prefer the steak but the chicken is also good. The garlic fried octopus is amazing (but not for the unadventurous eaters out there ). My wife loves the chirashi bowls here but she is pregnant now and can't have raw fish so lately she has been eating the ramen and loves it. She also likes the teriyaki salmon. I always have to get at least one order of salmon sashimi because it's always fresh and in good proportions here. Fair amount of high quality sashimi for the price. Sure you can get more somewhere else, but the quality is not nearly as good. And the really expensive places don't serve you enough portion. Ninja does it just right! This place is a local favorite for a reason. It gets pretty crowded for dinner because it's a local hot spot so you might have to wait a bit, so sometimes that's a bummer, but totally worth the wait! read more

I've been coming here for a long time and I've finally got to writing a review for this place. The fish here is extremely fresh and delicious; there are tons of things to choose on the menu and a lot of yummy combos to order. They have the sashimi combo regular and the deluxe. I always end up getting the deluxe during dinner. It comes with 6 different types of fish and it's so good!! I also like their bento combinations; the beef and chicken teriyaki are pretty good. The chirashi bowls here, however, are not top notch; they're just average in my opinion. But something that really does stand out is their rolls. I've tried almost all the rolls on their "list of rolls" and I have to say their rainbow roll and the dragon roll are my favorites!! The rainbow roll has so much fresh sashimi on it and the dragon roll has a sweet but not overly salty sauce, plus the eel is cooked well. The overall ambiance for this place is more warm and family oriented. It's a place where you can enjoy some pretty decent Japanese food. The sushi here is good and theres nothing fishy about it, its just the SERVICE THAT IS HORRIBLE and a little unethical. So first, the food- I usually get Combination A with beef and for $10 its worth it, you get salad, beef teriyaki, few pieces of sashimi, and california roll. The teriyaki is always well prepared and not overcooked and hard and as for the salad its great i love their (oniony) dressing :) The tuna and salmon sashimi is fresh and the california roll is just average. Ambience- very small tight spaced restaurant in the corner of a plaza but inside feels cozy although i must say the tables are much too close together. THE SERVICE OH THE SERVICE- it is veryyyy slow and depending on which waiter you get you may have different experiences on eating here. As for being quite a regular myself (there are no decent sushi places I trust in rowland heights), I could say that the young man and the short lady with spiky-ish black hair are very nice and courteous. The lady with the brown shoulder length hair however, is very mean and unethical (and at times, disrespectful). I came here with my parents and my dad was slightly sick with a cold so he was coughing. We were seated at a table that had the air conditioning blowing right at our entire table and when he asked the lady with the brown hair if we could move to another table in the corner (the only other one available), she refused. We even said we don't mind waiting until they cleaned up the table but she just acted like she didn't know what we were talking about.Then we asked the lady with the short black hair but by that time the lady with the short brown hair had seated the next waiting customers onto the table we had been requesting. For the rest of our lunch my dad was coughing hard and other people seated at other tables would sometimes glance over at us. Sometimes I wonder why I still come here once in a while, but then the food is good so why not. OH YEAH try the chirashi bowl, it is somewhat overpriced but its worth trying at least once. read more

Hidden in the hills of Walnut, we found this hole in the wall sushi restaurant in the corner of an isolated plaza, & these places always are hit or miss. Ninja Sushi was a BIG HIT! We ordered a Doctors roll which had the most albacore + salmon + avocado toppings I have ever seen. The California roll underneath all the toppings of fish & avocado was substantial enough to withstand the sheer weight! The fish was delectable and fresh, the avocado brought everything together nicely with the CA roll, & eating the entire thing was tough. Can't go out on the first roll so I ordered some ramen which was delicious as well, very hot (temp wise) but yummy. Most of the sushi spots in the RH and DB area are Chinese or Korean operated, so Ninja Sushi is a rare Japanese gem around here. If you're into traditional Japanese nigiri and sashimi without busting your wallet, this is the place to go. The gf and I have been to quite a few sushi spots in the surrounding environs and Ninja has the best bang for your buck as far as traditional sushi goes. I recommend the nigiri or sashimi deluxe, which is kind of like omakase. The nigiri deluxe comes with sake, maguro, hamachi, tai, unagi, ebi, ikura, and uni. The sashimi is about the same and comes with toro. Both will run you about $25. The fish is fresh, clean, and the itaimes know what they're doing with the cuts. Always generous and the fish is well-selected. I haven't really run into any freshness issues like some people have stated, and I've probably been here about five times. A lot of reviewers are knocking this place on the service, but in my opinion it's because Ninja Sushi takes their nigiri and sashimi seriously, and are a little sick of people coming in and ordering a lot of baked and cooked uramaki noob-style, and drenching their quality fish in a ton of soy sauce and wasabi. Sushi's kinda elitist, you know? But you gotta give the customer what they demand, so the noob stuff is there, but I don't think the Itaimes are really happy making them. They've always got the young guy doing the rolls (a.k.a. "gaijin order"). The last time we were there, we saw a guy perusing the menu, and deciding after a long time to try to order fried rice. The waitress had to explain to him that it was Japanese and not Chinese. Given that they probably have to deal with this a lot, I'm not surprised by the perceived lack of service. read more

I went here with one of my close friends. We were in search of a good sushi place and this place had decent reviews so we decided to give it a try. It was terrible. The sushi tasted so bad that it seemed as if the chefs never tried it before they served it. We got the BSC roll. I've gotten this roll at other sushi places and it's one of my favorite rolls, this place made it taste so horrible. I'm not one to leave sushi on the plate but neither of us could eat it. I've been a patron at this restaurant for over a decade now. My family used to come here every weekend as part of a family tradition. They're the only Japanese restaurant around the area that's actually run by Japanese people, so the taste is very authentic and fresh and is very reminiscent to the meals I had when I visited Japan. However, their portions have gone way down while their prices have gone up. The past couple of months, we've been ordering takeout instead of dining in and every time we order the Chicken Teriyaki and Tempura combination. For the past two months, the amount of chicken they gave me was literally smaller than the palm of my hand. I'm not even exaggerating when I say I could have fit the entire portion of chicken in one bite. It's also become less and less seasoned almost as if they're afraid to use up all their teriyaki sauce. The chicken ended up tasting extremely bland because there wasn't even any sauce on some of the pieces. The tempura portions are equally small if not smaller. It was like one small broccoli floret, one string bean, a small piece of zucchini, and 2 small shrimps. They compensate this by giving you this big scoop of salad so it overflows into the other areas of the box so as to make it appear less empty. Not only this, they now charge 10 cents for any soy sauce packets. It's becoming increasingly less tempting to order from here anymore which is sad because I like supporting small businesses like these where they making authentic tasting Japanese food from actual Japanese people. read more

The food here is okay, but I think it's overpriced for what they offer. My family used to come here all the time but nowadays I find it rather cramped. The portions are small and it's hard to be seated. My uncle likes coming here for the beer. Everything here is mediocre. They serve all your typical rolls and their ramens are bland. The ramen barely has any meat. This is no exaggeration. Also, their steamed egg is totally overpriced. It's so small and you can make it yourself at home. When my aunt treated the family here last time, she had to pay about $700. There was barely any food too! I'd much rather go to a sushi buffet for the same quality of sushi and larger selection. I ordered the cold soba noodles with tempura and I was pleased. Unfortunately, it took a long time to come out. When we arrived for an early dinner, the restaurant was deserted. But, by 6 pm, the house was full for a Thursday evening with patrons waiting outside. So, I guess this was popular and the locals liked the food here.
