My first cocktail was the Blood & Ink (Cynar 70, onion skin syrup, pomegranate, $18). It drinks on the bitter side with some light sweetness. She liked this a lot and ordered it as her second drink.
Her first cocktail was the Sweet Intoxication (Lemon Hart 151, Fernet, falernum, cold brew, $20). This drink had some good complexity with bitterness and good coffee notes. It has a mole foam on top with a cinnamon sprinkle. You get a little of the foam with each sip which tones down the 151 and adds some additional flavor and texture.
We were in the mood for some food, so we ordered a few items. Their food menu is more small bites than full entrees. If you are looking for a full meal, dine next door at Les Amis before your visit to Chapter 4.
I had the Steak & Fries ($20). The steak was seasoned well, is pre-cut, and there were some onions and peppers in the mix. I would guess its three to four ounces of meat, and it comes with a good garlic sauce. The round-cut fries were good, and there were a lot of them. This was the perfect plate since I wasn't hungry enough for a full entree.
She had the quesadilla with chicken ($17). It is made using pita bread, and is filled with chicken, cheese, and some veggies. It was good and filling.
Next, I had the Black Garlic Old Fashioned (bourbon, black garlic demerara, bitters, smoked, $22). This has a great presentation as the drink arrives smoked in a tall glass container. First the smoke is poured into the glass, followed by the cocktail. It drinks very smooth with some light sweetness. The garnish is a roasted garlic clove. I ate it, and it was surprisingly sweet with only a light garlic flavor.
We had one more round from the regular menu. I had the Prophet and Loss (pandan, coconut rum, velvet falernum, bright citrus, silky mango pineapple foam, $18). The grassy flavor from the pandan stands out with coconut underneath. The foam top is a little sweet, and I actually liked the drink better as more of the foam mixed in to the rest of the drink. Maybe I'd stir it a bit next time.
She had the Pasilla & Banana (mezcal, pasilla syrup, banana liqueur, pineapple, lime, chocolate bitters, $18). It drinks mezcal forward, but not too much, with banana and a subtle heat underneath.
Service was great, friendly and prompt. Even the owner, JC, was helping out with service on a busy Saturday night.
We enjoyed the food and drinks. I really like the cocktail program here. They offer a wide selection of original cocktails, they actively add new drinks to the menu, and they use a great variety of spirits and ingredients you don't often see.
We will be back soon!
