This place is great! We were visiting Key West for the first time and fully expected the type of mediocre dining experiences that you would associate with restaurants located on a touristy street like Duval, but we were happily wrong about that. We came to NIne One Five on our first night to have a drink at the upstairs bar since we were meeting people there. I should mention that we were there during FREEZING weather, but it was fine because it contributed to the cozy feel this upstairs lounge has. The bartender (female) was helpful and nice and even remembered us on the next night when we went for dinner. Prices for glasses of wine and tapas were surprisingly reasonable considering it's Key West, and they had some interesting tapas combinations, although I have to say we didn't try any, since we had a dinner reservation somewhere else. As we were getting ready to leave a group celebrating a birthday came in and set up in the adjacent room to the bar, so they had a nice crowd up there and the restaurant was pretty full too. We came back the next night because we found the menu interesting and wanted to try dinner there. The restaurant is set in a Victorian house on Duval, but inside it's decorated in a more modern style, very simple but pretty, minimalist but not stark. There's plenty of outdoor sitting too, for better weather conditions. You can sit on the porch or on the patio down below. We ordered a bottle of Spanish Garnacha which we were already familiar with and it was excellent as always. For apps, my husband had the clams with chorizo, a weird combination but one that totally works. He was raving about those clams for days afterward! I had the Devils on Horseback (dates stuffed with garlic and wrapped in bacon served with a ponzu? dipping sauce) I loved the idea of this combination and it was good but could be better since the bacon overwhelms the whole thing, but since I like bacon, no problem. They should serve them on a bigger plate though, and decorate it with something, because the 6 small dates that they serve you come out on a very tiny plate that just makes it look like a really small portion! It was fine for me, but for someone with a bigger appetite, they might not be impressed when that plate comes out. For entrees my husband had the filet mignon with a brandy and peppercorn sauce that he loved, and he is very particular about steak and usually is never satisfied unless it comes from Graziano's Argentine Grill in Miami! He said that in addition to the really delicious sauce, the meat was also first rate and very tender. I had an appetizer as an entree, the beef carpaccio which was excellent. I also ordered a side of crispy polenta which was delicious! I really loved this side dish. It came with a sort of salsa made with capers, tomatoes and was really great. We shared a dessert. pear cobbler, which was fantastic, the pears were cooked just right, not mushy and it came with a nice crumbly pecan based topping. Staff was very pleasant, helpful but not intrusive. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Key West! read more
