Think customer services is dead? NOT! Just had a wonderful experience at the Arcata store. I had a warranty issue and as fate has it my item was a month over the warranty period. Still I thought it was worth going in. Carey called the manufacturer and got a response back to me the same day. I hadn't shopped at Nilsen much because we typically need items more like the lumber yard stocks (lumber, sheetrock, etc). But after looking around and realizing Nilsen has basic cleaning products, boots, socks, Yeti products and even cute home decor I will definitely be giving them more of my business! Shop local! read more

Years ago, I was treated rudely at Shaffer's Ace in Henderson Center by older men rather consistently. Since then, I refused to ever go there again, even though it was a block away from our house. Pierson's was like night and day, in their customer service. We live further away from Pierson's now, but it is still worth the easy drive during the week between 2 and 3 p.m. and we know the back roads. If time allows, I love meandering around in the garden area after I buy my supplies. One lovely afternoon, I even got to pet the garden cat sleeping up on an empty flower crate out back. Years ago, maybe 2004, I took my plans, measurements, and idea to build a cat door in a window. In the lumber department out back, they found me some scrap wood. Then I got the proper brackets inside the main building. In there, a nice gentlemen helped me figure out what bracket I needed AND he used his electric screwdriver to attach the brackets to the wood for me. Wish I got their names to tell the manager how much I appreciated their help. Never will I forget those guys going the extra mile for me, inexperienced in these things just having an idea. My measurements were correct and between the Pierson's lumber out back and bracket, screws, and nail area in front, they literally helped me build a cat door/window. It went under a window that opened upward and worked very well, with a table to jump on to get up and down for short excursions, then home to eat as I battened down the hatches. Many years later, that precious little mouser cat crossed the Rainbow bridge. She is buried under that beautiful flowering tree right outside where her cat window used to be.

Prices are really affordable and the employees are courteous. It's pretty convenient, with pre-loaded, pre-priced cartloads of wood. You can get anything from a cartload of irregular chunks of wood for $15 up to a $35 cart of oak. Additionally you can purchase pallets of wood onsite or for delivery. My complaint is that a lot of the wood I've bought there lately is hissing and sputtering, taking a lot more time to get started, and not throwing much heat out. By contrast, a more expensive bundle of seasoned campfire wood bought anywhere else will be burning quicker and hotter in a fraction of the time. With that in mind, the savings and convenience of buying here are countered by the fact that a lot of the wood doesn't seem properly seasoned. Additionally, brief internet research indicates that wetter wood causes more rapid creosote buildup in the chimney or stovepipe, which can be a hazard over time.

Terrible customer service received from poorly trained management team at the new fancy nilsen mansion in arcata. Lol. What a joke. And dont even get me started on the joker running eureka. Lol. I don't think either of these business' will survive the changing economic times and situations of this area. Staff was more than willing to cut the various pieces of wood for her and show her different options. Staff was very courteous and friendly to the point where they even suggested going to another shop since they didn't have other cheaper options for a staple gun. I am glad this is a spot I had a chance to experience b/c we felt we were supporting a local shop. The only downfall while at the counter was learning how dragonflies get caught in their building because they fly very high up into the ceiling and get caught up there. Unfortunately their windows are not opened and sadly I forgot to ask if that is even an option.
