Ginger, the owner is wonderful! The pets she has for sale are very well cared for. She had a great staff, the last time I was there. I think we bought Blue Buffalo dog food. My daught used to manage a pet food section at a store in the southeast US. She made it clear she thought that was an extremely good dog food. (However she isn't a veterinarian, so ask your vet.) I have a snake, carnivorous plants, 2 cats, a frog, and a bunch of fish and aquatic plants. I am always needing something from Fin n Feather. Their store is awesome, I noticed recently it seemed like they had a ton of new staff to help out in the back which was great. It's not all clean and shiny like Petco, which I like. & you can ALWAYS rely on them for crickets. Petco is ALWAYS out. When I first started getting fish, I got a few from Petco first. When I went to go to fin n Feather the fish are sooo much bigger/healthier. All my fish I have gotten from fin n feather are still alive. I can't say the same about Petco. There is one girl with glasses who is super friendly and knows a TON about fish/aquatics. She was great. There's a super tall guy and he is very helpful as well. read more

I've visited several times since my last review and my experiences were great. The team is very knowledgeable and friendly. I'm mostly focused on saltwater aquariums with coral. They have a couple staff members that can provide great advice. I'm sure they can get you started with a tank, get you into the local coral network, get you some great coral, and provide expert advice. I'm sure it's similar with fish. I've been to about 15 shops in the Bay Area and talk with the online communities. I would put Fin-N-Feather equal to the top three aquarium shops I've visited for aquarium and coral advice. Their selection is trailered to the customers so I'm not seeing $300+ pieces but I'm sure they can get most anything you request if you get to know them and ask. read more

I want to love this place. The aquarium is beautiful, and well stocked. Dolly is wonderful! They mostly have what I need. But the staff needs more training, and everything just needs more standard procedures. One of the benefits of a store like Petco or an online vendor is average quality assurance-- when I get small crickets elsewhere, they arrive well- small. Unfortunately, when I specifically requested "small" crickets here at Fin and Feather, they gave me crickets that were large enough to actually KILL and CONSUME my very expensive and beautiful frogs. That combined with a lot of very confusing, awkward, and even condescending interactions with staff make me reticent to visit again... despite this being a regular haunt as a child and my continued adult desire to patronize local establishments. read more

I've shopped here for 30 years and I really, really want to keep my business local but I've given up after three visits to get fish. I have had to wait for 20 to 30 minutes to get help in the fish department. I have no issues with the front part for cats, dogs, birds, etc. but I'm not going to waste any more time waiting on help in the aquatic department. read more

Went in to get some endler livebearers and a betta yesterday, I was not knowledgeable of the best ratio with male and females in endlers but was given the best information I could have asked for. They severely lack enough knowledge to maintain healthy fish, that are safe to add to your tank. 2.They are not careful enough, observant enough, or just lack the care to thoroughly examine and identify diseases. 3. If you have any issue with their animals, they will attempt to suggest that you are the ignorant one. (Even if you have over 50+ years of experience) 4. They are severely overpriced. 5. Very poor customer service. 6. If you get fish or animals from this place, you are at a greater risk of spreading disease among your current pets, or fish. read more

Bought a tank heater and a new plant for my betta fish tank yesterday from here as suggested by a staff member and set up my tank. This morning I noticed that my fish was acting differently, floating vertically by the heater in a very strange way. I called the store and expressed concern, they told me "he's just cold" and less than an hour later my fish was dead. I go to Fin N Feather over other pet stores like Pet Co to help keep local business alive in my area. Also Fin n Feather has great staff who seem to know and care for the animals and there needs. They have a great reptile section, lots of exotic birds and fish galore.... freshwater and salt. Fin n Feather has been around for as long as I can remember and I love the mural outside the store, located in Henderson center. I got my 2nd leopard gecko there not to long ago, and he is healthy and doing great. They have a large selection of geckos almost always which says to me that they have good breeders. I go in every week and a half or so and get my dusted crickets for my gecko and the service is always prompt and with a smile, these folks seem to like there jobs which makes for better customer service. They have great customer service here. The lady and the gentleman that my friends and I talked to were both extremely knowledgable and friendly. They have an excellent assortment of feeders, and they were extremely helpful with finding the right feeders for my baby bearded dragon. They also have a much larger variety of tank decorations, hides, bowls, etc. than other stores in the area. They seem like a reliable place to get pets, feeders, or supplies. I love Fin and Feather. They test my aquarium water for free and they take good care of my dogs when we walk in. They have a superb collection of live fish, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. They had more varieties of tarantulas than I have seen in one place since I lived in the Bay Area. You want something for the pup to chew on? They've got it, in spades. You could probably find it organic and free trade, if you looked (I don't). How about something for the cat to attack? Yeah, they've got every variation on that, too. Looking to pick up a new friend? Well, they've got birds, they've got fish (a lot of fish!) and I think they host cat/dog adoptions, too. Actually, it's 4 stars for me, 1 star for my son. Let me explain... I went in with my husband to fill out a small fish tank. Having last had aquariums when living in the Bay Area and going to the excellent Albany Aquarium, I wasn't sure what I'd have access to up here. I was pleasantly surprised at the selection of equipment, fish, and live plants at Fin-N-Feather. The guy that helped us was very knowledgeable about aquariums, got us what we needed, and made some good suggestions. I dropped about $125 (yeah, I know!) and went home to set it up, with plans to come back later for fish. Well, as it turns out, Sunday is my day off but Fin-N-Feather is closed on Sunday, so my son (who works in Henderson Center) said he'd go by on his way home and get my fish. This is how the exchange went: "I'd like to get a betta for my step-mom." "Well, we're out." "When will you get more?" "Come back Monday." "What time are you open Monday?" "When we're open." Okay....Now, the thing is, my husband and I are white. My son is Hispanic. Was someone at Fin-N-Feather just having a bad day, or what? If you live in Humboldt and you have some color, you know what I'm talking about. I'd like to think it was just a bad day, but however it was, it left a bad taste in our mouths. I cannot say enough good about this place. I've been coming here every week or two since I moved out to Humboldt about three years ago. I go primarily to get mice/rats for my Kenyan Sand Boa, but occasionally go in for other things, such as dog toys/leashes for my gf's dogs. The staff is almost always very friendly and helpful, and many of them are undeniably knowledgeable about their line of work. In fact, I had a flat the other day, and the manager even let me borrow her car jack (I managed to forget where mine was until after I had the spare on, oh well), and even offered to let me borrow her air compressor, tools, etc. Go here for local doggie/kitty/fish/reptile needs; I would definitely recommend it. read more

Very helpful and friendly staff. Good assortment of flea products. I found a natural spray for the carpet that really seems to have worked. They also have a wide selection of toys, leashes, harnesses, food, treats and other supplies on one side of the store and the other side has everything you need for your salt or fresh water aquarium. Great people very intelligent in the pet world. Always friendly and have healthy, well handled pets. I've gotten fresh water fish and plaint for my tanks they were always healthy and beautiful. I've gotten a hamster that was a sweet heart that was healthy and well handled. There pets are normally good animals. I have had many great experiences coming here. There is a reptile room which has a great selection of all different types of snakes, lizards, spiders, etc. Ryan the reptile dude was extremely helpful and nice and knows soooo much about animal care and types and everything. There is also a huge fish room with tons of fish and aquarium plants. In the back of the store they also have rabbits, rats and guinea pigs. Shopped here for years with no problem. Went this year to get a pet food can cover for dog food- a simple $2 item. They enthusiastically sold me one that fits no dog food cans. I've taken it to stores and tried it on many. When I went back and told them the can cover they sold me doesn't fit any cans, they said "We know". They said it was an old can cover from the '80's and they had stock left over. They had no other offerings. So basically, instead of throwing out the plastic can covers that are useless and providing newer ones that worked, they'd rather keep the old ones on the shelf for a quick $2. That's a dishonesty I cannot condone. Won't be shopping there again. I bought a can cover elsewhere. Works like a dream. I will be taking my business elsewhere from now on. read more
