I cannot speak highly, enough about this organization. They are a non-profit, no kill shelter. They rely on donations to keep them going. They take care of animals. They are protecting animals' health and well-being. The Humane Society!is not a pet store (who sells animals nor matter who you are or what your plans are with that animal). This organization does not exist to appease to your specific situation or give you a break. THEY RESCUE ANIMALS. And... before they allow you to adopt (especially dogs) they will check you out, check out your space and if they deem you "unfit" you probably are! They are picky for a good, reason. They will also NOT take in somebody's pet who is trying to unload a problem, animal that does not fit into their family and probably, nowhere else! I cannot speak lowly enough of the people who have punished this impeccable organization with their petty and meaningless reviews. They should be ashamed of themselves with their lopsided, complaints. I hope these cry-babies are eventually judged and criticized for being the ugly, entitled, self-serving humans they indicate to anybody unfortunate enough to have read their STUPID Pointless, comments that really got my goat! This organization deserves no less than a five star review from everybody they've helped and rescued. Please, pay no attention to those sour-grapes reviews. Sequioa Humane Society might have administrative and or communication challenges like every business (although I've not seen this). Maybe they are not perfect in that respect. I do not like this organization. It went from a place that rescued animals and found them good homes to a place that seems for appearance only. Some reviewers had not adopted pets from them, but gave them a good review. I have adopted two pets from them and will never do so again until there is change in the organization. read more

The Sequoia Humane Society provides an extraordinary service to the region for homeless pets in their time of need. They provide not only shelter , but thanks to dedicated staff and volunteers, lots of walks and socialization training, soothing music in the kennels, medical care and all their shots, food and grooming. if you are looking for a pet to add to your family , visit the shelter, fill out an application, ( you are then on file for a whole year) then visit with pets and you can find the perfect new member for your family. read more

My wife and I were interested in adopting a dog and found these folks to be quite helpful. We found their facility to be clean and the animals happy. The setting in the forest near the beach is ideal for the animals. They play special music just to sooth the temperament of these animals which are now experiencing a new situation. The staff and volunteers friendly and concerned with the health and disposition of their animals. The application was thorough but not onerous. I did not adopt a dog from Sequoia Humane Society, but a couple on vacation in the area needed an emergency home placement for a dog which could no longer live with the other dog in their family. So Sequoia Humane Society put us together at no charge. I believe in this shelter so much that I intend to become a volunteer myself. read more

They had a really small selection of animals and once my friend and I found an animal they took forever to let us meet with them and were very unsure about letting us adopt her due to our "unfit" home, we had her on hold for us and they adopted her out after a day of being on hold. One of the ladies named Sara was very rude to both of us when she over heard our situation, if you want to adopt a animal you should go somewhere else since they showed favoritism on home versus loving owners read more

I got the best dog I've ever had from them. Also more than one kitten over the years. The staff is always helpful. They do not crowd you when you walk through to look at the animals up for adoption, which is an extremely personal thing. read more

I went to the Sequoia Humane Society because that is where I adopted my last dog. I recall then I had to wait for almost 3 weeks before I could take her home. When I arrived their were many dogs - but they were all 'on hold' - for people who had already submitted applications. The next day nearly all were gone. I would have to wait. When I returned later, I saw cute dogs that I was very interested in adopting. Again I was told I would have to wait (unknown period of time) and then of course, they have to call all people on the application list (unknown number 50 or 200?????) to see if anyone wanted the dog. Only after that would I be contacted. I figured my chances were zero. I have never been to a shelter where it was so difficult and prolonged to get an animal. If you go you will be waiting a long time. DO NOT bring your child in as they will be heartbroken like me. There is NO chance that you will be taking any dog home that day. read more

Actually my rating is ZERO regarding treatment of prospective adopters. The facility cares for its animals ok. In my earlier applications, the paperwork was lost and no one knew, therefore, I was prevented from adopting several times! One time they adopted out the one I wanted and kept for me the one I had not applied for. Two years ago, I again tried again to adopt: filling out the application [long] and had my cats given the required rabies vaccinations. Unfortunately my vet had not updated my folder & I hadn't thought of it: I adopt, fix, and rehome a few kitties and dogs once in a while. After this problem was corrected and brought up-to-date, I tried again to adopt. Even though I spoke with the woman in charge, she frankly told me to go to another shelter to adopt. She, coldly, would give me NO REASON why I wasn't allowed to adopt from Sequoia! If the McKinleyville Shelter had small dogs, I could go there, but, for some reason, they are sent to Sequoia. This action prevents me from giving a loving, caring home to a little dog, even causing me to buy a little dog. PREJUDICIAL treatment is not right! And secrets are wrong! read more

This humane society is a sad and very pathetic place. I would recommend that people stay EXTREMELY far from here, but that would only put the pets they do have in an even worse situation. I was told to avoid this place, but it was the only no kill shelter in that area and I had to surrender my dog immediately. This location is not a well run humane society and it does not treat those wanting to adopt their pets with care. They have lost paperwork and do not call people back in order to adopt, resulting in someone else adopting the pet. After a long hassle of scheduling a date/time with them, they did not take my pet (after placing her in a room with two random women for TWO MINUTES they decided she wasn't fit for their company because she was timid in coming to them- otherwise she was considered a perfectly well trained and happy dog), and they did not have resources for me to turn to as I was persistent I needed a no kill shelter for my dog. They finally agreed to put her on their private dog adoptions page and that turned into an even worse hassle! It was bad enough to surrender my pet, but then to have it drag on with a company that was useless is even harder to let her go. I had her adopted to a woman who was going to have her registered as an emotional support dog (which worked out swimmingly with her personality) within a single day of placing her on Craigslist. I then called AND emailed them saying to please take her information down. Then I got an email MONTHS later from them asking if she was adopted and she was sorry to ask but "We have had several changes in the front office here. Our email response time has been atrocious." ... Mind you, that email was sent to me by way of my previous email stating she was adopted. Then! I got numerous calls from people asking if she was still available. After each call I would call this place and say please take down her information. After almost six months! I had to still remind them to take it down as I was still getting calls. Only to have someone respond back to my emails saying they couldn't find anything and to give them the exact location of where to find them (and of course I told them EACH TIME I CALLED AND EMAILED THEM where her information could be found because I asked the people who called where they got my contact information). I not only sent them the link to their page, but also a screenshot to them since they were incapable of running a good system to locate her. Just ridiculous and so unprofessional. A wretched experience with them - and I will never recommend them to any of my friends. read more

Staff would not let me see the dog I was interested in "because she might bond". I said I had driven 4 hours one way. They said, "We pretty much allow folks to see the dog at the time of adoption. and she is being spayed tomorrow." I said, I'd be happy to drive back, but would need to see her first so it's not a wasted trip. They said apply, so I did, and it was approved. They did an oral interview and said I was approved. ....and "we'll call you when she is available, and you are the first to ask for her." Nine days post spay I finally call them, "She is not quite available yet." A day later, after Art in the Park, she was off the site. They never called. I'm glad the dog found a home, but I was left with no dog, after looking for 6 mos. , after empty promises. I have humane society dog walking experience plus trained 16 foster dogs plus my poodle is a registered therapy dog. I also have a brand new unused step in halter and collar and dashed hopes. "We can't let you see her because she might bond." Really? read more
