It think Nightingale offers excellent food, service, and atmosphere. Their pasta and pizza were especially good. It's one of my favorite downtown restaurants because the quality is always consistent. Reservations are recommended since it gets busy, even on weeknights. It's a great spot for nights out, celebrations, or meeting friends. The upstairs area can be loud, and parking in downtown can take time, so plan ahead....The location is convenient for SkyTrain users and guests staying nearby, and it's an easy walk from the Vancouver Convention Centre. read more

Nightingale has one of the best happy hour offering I've experienced in recent years across several major cities. Apart from the interesting cocktails, the food menu is much more vegetable forward than is typical. Of the ten food items on the HH menu only three had any meat in them. I had the Paperplane, a bourbon based cocktail, that was delicious. My wife had the Portuguese white wine -- also delicious. We then shared the marinated olives, the beet salad, and the margherita pizza. All were superb. The food pretty standard up-scale affair. We got the beets, cauliflower, fried chicken, chorizo pizza, and rigatoni. The highlight was the cauliflower which was well flavoured, and the chorizo pizza had a nice texture and subtle wash of honey. The restaurant is beautiful but a bit loud, service was reasonably fast. Trendy restaurant at DT Vancouver. We went there for a anniversary dinner, but did not have the best experience. We arrived on a rainy night, and when we were lining up to be seated. The hostess saw a couple behind us, seems to be a regular couple, and she offered to seat them right away in the bar. She completely ignored the fact that there were other people lining up in front of them. When it was our turn, our bar seats option was offered at first by another hostess, but quickly rescindid, because her co worker has jumped the line and offered it to regulars. We were told we have to wait 10 mins. I was not feeling it, and confronted the hostess who gave the seats away, she did apologized, and her coworkers helped her out and gave us a four people table right away in order to remedy the situation. I thank her coworkers, and I think she is lucky to have smart and fast acting coworkers. As for the food, we walked in knowing this is a fusion, more creative place. However, with the high start rating here, I would imagine they have their flavors figured out. We ordered 5 dishes, the Japanese yam dish is absolutely a 5 star dish, Delicious! the pork belly 4, the pork cheek 3.5, the cauliflower 1.5, and mushroom crab on toast was 2. The hummus did not fit with the Chinese style pork cheek flavors, cauliflower was way too acidic, the crab and mushrooms just does NOT match. During a visit to Vancouver, I found my experience at Nightingale to be a favorite. The restaurant ambiance was grand and refined. Service was excellent. Our server was kind, made nice recommendations and was extremely attentive. All the dishes we ordered were carefully crafted and the freshness and attention to detail were very apparent. The buttermilk fried chicken certainly stood out and Canadian maple syrup complimented the dish; it was the clear star of the meal. The beets, sweet potato and mushroom pizza were not far behind. Nightingale offers that ideal mix of warm atmosphere and well-executed food. The space has a rustic, industrial farmhouse feel, cozy but stylish, and the two-level layout makes it feel open without losing the charm. The pizza in particular stood out: great crust, balanced heat, and full of flavor. The fried chicken and focaccia were also favorites, comforting, well-seasoned, and satisfying. We finally came to try (after countless recommendations). I am a pizza lover so it is only natural to come to a joint that does pizza rights. We came for happy hour and it was busy!!! The place is located in a gorgeous heritage building, with 2 floors and if you are lucky to sit upstairs, you get to see the pizza ovens and all that action! We started with the Kennebec fries, tomato, malt vinegar aioli. This dish is so unique and tastes just like ketchup chips! The malt dip is unique and such a great pairing. I personally wish the fries were a bit crispier as they were soft but over all, great dish! We also got Cauliflower hummus, chermoula, pickled celery, fife sourdough. The bread is heavenly and the hummus was thick with texture (which I prefer). So much flavor and the oil bath it was in was so flavorful. I wasn't a huge fan of the pickled celery. Than we go their Roasted brussels sprouts, green onion, thai chili vinaigrette. Don't skip this dish. The brussels are bright and perfectly cooked, the sauce is so flavorful and really needed more of it to bathe the brussels! Don't skip this one! We also got the Charred savoy cabbage, miso, soy, honey. I love cabbage but this one was not for me. It was very rich and a bit too salty. Lastly for food, we got the Roasted mushroom, fontina, confit garlic, arugula pesto. Huge chunks of soft and spreadable garlic, the mushrooms are so delicious, and the pesto is such a nice touch. I would have liked more of it because it was so good! That crust is teeth sinkable and so delicious! Great pizza! Nightingale can be easily missed from the outside, but once you step inside, you'll be transformed to rustic meets modern design with a cozy feel. Walls have mounted avian figurines, the bar is adorned with bird cages, and ceilings have hanging wagon wheel style chandeliers. I stopped by on a rainy weekday at 9 PM for a late dinner one hour before closing, and the restaurant was still full of patrons. There was no wait to sit at the bar. I started off with the Bramble cocktail (CA$15), which was gin, blackberry, and lemon. It was a delicious balance of sweet and tart. For a side, I opted for the grilled broccolini with calabrian chili vinaigrette, parmesan, parsley (CA$16), which was tender but not overcooked, had a good amount of char for smokey flavors, and was mildly spicy from the chili. And for the main, I tried the spaghetti with manila clams, jalapeno, scallion, white wine (CA$24), which was really good but a bit on the oily side. Great customer service from the hostess and servers. Food is served family style and came out quickly after ordering. We enjoyed everything we ate an drank which included the Friendship Bracelet cocktail, kale salad, roasted Brussels sprouts, roasted cauliflower, focaccia and the whole branzino (watch out for bones!) Everything was seasoned well and not overly dressed or overcooked which I appreciate because I like to taste each veggie instead them being so sauce forward. Made a reservation for a Thursday evening. The ambiance was nice. Our waiter was friendly, and he explained the menu. It is a small plates style with a recommended 4 dishes for 2 people. We got the focaccia ($9), eggplants ($16), veal tongue ($24), and branzino ($46). My favorites were the focaccia and branzino. The focaccia was warm, and it was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was a little on the salty side though. The branzino was super tender, but the chimichurri sauce was a little too spicy for me. The eggplants were solid, but nothing too outstanding. The veal tongue was tender, but I personally was turned off by the texture. This spot is pricey, but a nice ambiance for a special occasion. read more

For the price, there are so many other excellent restaurants in Vancouver. The service was good, but the food was disappointing. Most of the food wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. The worst though was the beef tartare, which was basically minced, so had an almost pasty texture, and it was served on a single thick slice of toast which just got soggy with the tartare on it. It was also really noisy where our table was, I felt like we had to shout at each other to hear what the other person was saying, over a fairly small table. Can't recommend. read more

We had a really nice lunch at Nightingale; the fact that they serve the same menu all day/evening was a draw for us. The space is open and airy - the seating is nicely spread out, which makes for a surprisingly-intimate conversational environment. No inadvertent eavesdropping here. We ordered the Caesar, fried chicken, branzino, salmon, and a side of roasted carrots. All were well-prepared and delicious. I really loved the Caesar - the crunchy romaine/breadcrumb topping/white anchovies/generous shower of parm = A+ version of a classic. The salmon was a real winner, too (the temp was just this side of mid-rare - my favorite). The branzino was tasty, but the herb topping made the skin a bit soggy - I would have served that on the side. The carrots were great; loved the Mediterranean flavors. The fried chicken was maybe my least favorite of the items (although still pretty good). There was a little too much breading on it for my liking. Dessert: we ordered a salted caramel budino to share - nom. Butterscotch pudding heaven. My cappucino was excellent, too. read more

An important client hosted three of us for lunch this week. We were looking forward to trying out this highly rated restaurant. Five minutes after placing our food order, the server came back and told an associate her choice of rainbow trout was not available. She then replaced it with the salmon dish. Unfortunately, they soon brought the meals for three of us and then told our associate that her salmon would be ready in 8 to 10 minutes. Three of us were about to finish our meals when the salmon finally arrived. We were shocked to see such a small portion for $44. Our server did apologize and told us the salmon would be "on the house". Our client paid the bill and we left feeling very disappointed about our dining experience. Later in the day, our client sent us a copy of the bill he paid without reviewing it. Sure enough, the $44 salmon was on the bill after being told there would be no charge. I wouldn't go to a place like this (casual but a little more upscale than what I'm used to) on my own, so I appreciate that my friend told me about Nightingale and encouraged us to go! This place is a not to be missed treat in Vancouver. There is such great energy and a casual elegance among not only the patrons but the staff as well. It was nearly impossible to get a reservation at a reasonable time, but a very effective concierge at our hotel snagged a good time for dinner. The room is beautiful with a multi-story space with lots of natural light and a very pleasing design leaning on the contemporary with a bit of historic touch in a very attractive classic building. The reception was very engaging and friendly, and professional as well. We were greeted and seated in a cozy corner right away. The room is loud, so expect with the hard surfaces that conversation may be a bit difficult but not a problem. What I enjoyed was that the wait staff is so friendly and yet very professional. I felt they never missed a beat in service. They let us eat at our own pace, we were not rushed, and they constantly checked on water and provisions without being bothersome. Plus, the dishes arrived like choreographed clockwork. Why can't every restaurant be like it? It made the meal ever so enjoyable. We were informed, as we were new to the establishment, that all the dishes were intended to be shared. How cool is that? You get to try a variety of things and make the meal less formal. Water came immediately in a bottle with glasses, and I ordered a martini, custom made, and my better half a pisco sour (not on the drink menu). I later had a very delicious and refreshing glass of Italian Savignon Blanc. Starting off with a kale salad, it was absolutely splendid. So fresh and well-made, the entire complexity of ingredients worked perfectly together. The salad choices were very good, and this one stood out. A light amount of cheese (aged gouda) and dressing did not overpower the greens and radish. The pumpkin seeds added a lot to it. We went on to share a pizza and selected the chorizo. It was excellent. Not like my favored New York style, this pizza, wood fired, was a gourmet style with the thinnest crust imaginable, yet very well made and prepared. The chorizo was sliced paper thin, and the taste was amazing. The bit of honey drizzle made it stand out in taste and complexity. The small pieces of pepperochino added even more to it. One comment to be made is that they could do a better job of cutting the slices. It was difficult to pull apart without some vigorous cutting. Going on, we shared a 'large plate' of the squid ink pasta (radiatori) with small prawns, artichoke, and calabrian chili (sliced ever so small) Along with it, we had the Maui short ribs that came with a carrot and daikon shredded side. The miso dressing was excellent. Both large dishes were wonderful and very filling, tasty, and well prepared. The only criticism I have of the pasta was that the red sauce was a bit heavy and overbearing on the dish. The ribs, however, were seasoned well and delicate. Although dessert was alluring, we were quite satisfied and decided to call it quits. By the time we were leaving, the room was packed and vibrant with diners in lively conversation. Again, the energy of the place was great. And they have a fabulous bar area, packed as well. Overall, it was a very good experience, and although a bit on the pricey side, it is worth every Canadian cent (oh, they don't have those!). Met friends who live in DT Vancouver here while we were visiting from WA. Made reservations for 5pm for a table for 6. Got there our table wasn't ready so we waited about 10min. We were escorted upstairs to be seated. Venue is gorgeous and from the outside you can't tell it had an upstairs. We brought our wine and corkage fee is $65/bottle which worked out well for us. Menu is tapas style, small plates and of course you have pizza which is a good size. Our server looked very annoyed with us and not sure why, we were slow due to our 94 year old grandma who needed additional time to decided. We felt rushed to order so finally got into ordering. They cater for allergies which is a HUGE plus for us. They mark the menu with what you can eat and I was impressed since my son has various allergies. Wish Seattle restaurants had this concept. We ordered a margarita pizza which was yummy. Crust was so good. We ordered pasta, salad, salon, which was spot on. Pork belly definitely was the star of the nite. It impressed everyone on the table. Dessert we had the S'mores which was SO fancy. It has chocolate moose in the middle and was such a yummy combo. In addition the sommelier recommended two local wines which we happily drank two bottles off. Our sever looked happier mid dinner so we all were happy. We were so busy enjoying ourselves I failed to take pictures and check in. I spent weeks awaiting eating here before our cruise. So worth it. Love the small plate concept given here. We had a late nice lunch so I was worried about portion size of dinner. Everything was delicious! It's a beautiful restaurant. We were fortunate to share a meal here. Kale Salad was light and refreshing. Perfect way to start our meal. Roasted Curry Cauliflower hit the spot. Had not thought of pairing this vegetable with curry and it was delicious. We had meatballs night before but these were better! Seasoning was excellent. Fried chicken was highly recommended for a reason! Margarita Pizza was simple and so good. Loved the chewy crust! Definitely a great addition to our meal. Everything was lovely from the start of our meal to our Opera Cake and cheesecake. Just wish both the desserts had been a little larger. I visited this restaurant several times. Their quality is always consistent, and I love their ambiance. It's a great place to take my overseas friends who have visited Vancouver and introduce them to Canadian cuisine. The Canadian food here is excellent, and, of course, they all love this place. What I tried this time: Buttermilk Fried Chicken - I consider this dish to be one of their signature dishes. The batter is very crispy, the chicken is juicy and tender, and the spiced maple syrup adds a delightful touch to this plate. Duck Sausage - This was the best dish of the night. I've had many bratwurst-style sausages from various places, but this sausage was exceptionally juicy. I particularly enjoyed the pepper and spice, and the sauce enhanced the spiciness even more. I absolutely loved it. Baked sweet potatoes - Potato was crispy outside and soft inside. I love the chive cream which really matches with this sweet potatoes. Sweet and sour(but not tangy sour, perfect) Grilled Top sirloin - The meat was tender, although not the best I've had compared to previous steaks I've tried, it was still good. The sauce was very delicate and clearly well-crafted. whitechocolate elderflower mousse with strawberry vanilla tonka bean- A very beautiful dessert in terms of presentation. The square, pink mousse immediately caught my eye when I found it on Instagram. The taste was light, with a dominant white chocolate flavor and a subtle hint of elderflower. The strawberries provided a tangy contrast, though I couldn't finish them because I'm not a fan of sour fruits Overall, I am satisfied with the dishes, ambiance, and the menu offerings. I love that Nightingale is decorated beautifully inside and has 2 stories! My friend and I came for happy hour during the weekday and it was pretty empty in here, so we probably could've gotten away with just walking in. Their rigatoni here is probably the best rigatoni I've ever tried. It was so creamy and had a hint of citrus which I really loved as I thought it made the overall dish so flavorful. I couldn't get over how good this dish was! There was a lot of sauce so I dipped my pizza the pasta and overall it was just amazing together. The pizza size and taste were good, but their sweet potato appetizers were my second favorite thing here, the skin was so crispy on the outside and decadent on the inside. I would absolutely recommend everything I ordered! We ordered a Strawberry Sour Margarita Beer and El Diablo cocktails off their happy hour menu and we enjoyed both. All we needed was one drink each since the food is a lot heavier than we anticipated. We were both bloated by the time we finished everything as it was all truly very good and we wanted to eat as much as we could, so we definitely left with full and happy stomachs! read more

Reservations were made in advance and when my friend and I arrived we were seated immediately - the restaurant has 2 levels but we were seated on the first. I ordered roasted brussel sprouts, fries and a margherita pizza; it was much more food than I could handle but it was all really good so I did my best to consume as much as I could. The brussel sprouts were slightly tender and not over charred; the fries were perfectly crisp and soft on the inside - they were served with a vinegar based sauce that amped up the flavor; the margherita pizza was cooked well on a thin crust with a perfect ratio of mozzarella, sauce and basil. I ordered a drink that was a twist on the Arnold Palmer which was good also... I had no room for dessert so did not order. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff were all helpful; food was served fairly quickly and was reasonably priced. Whenever I am in town, I plan to return. read more

We dined here for my birthday dinner (which is Canada Day) and, even without a reservation, we were immediately seated on the patio. We had a very professional, pleasant, and knowledgeable server who assisted us in building an extraordinary meal. We shared five small plates (kale salad, beef tartare, Japanese sweet potato, sausage, and prawns) and each was as good as the last. Just five stars! Seeing Japanese sweet potato on a menu is so rare and unexpected (it's one of my favorites to cook at home), that really knocked our socks off. We had our 21 month old baby with us and our table easily accommodated his stroller and our server sweetly played peekaboo with him the whole time. This was such a divine and memorable meal. No complaints (except that I was only drinking soda water and each one was about 8oz and cost $7 a pop, yikes!). But seriously what matters is this was our best meal in all of Vancouver by far. This was our first meal after landing in BC. We made reservations at 4pm to have a late lunch off of their happy hour menu, which actually has so many food and drink options. You don't really see that at many happy hours so we were really happy about that. For drinks, I ordered the wildeye strawberry sour margarita beer and my friend ordered the el diablo. Loved the sour - it was not too sour or sweet! The el diablo was your typical moscow mule but with tequila instead of vodka.. mexican mule! My friend enjoyed her drink as much as i enjoyed my sour, so we ordered a second round! A little bit too heavy for all the carbs we ended up eating but no regrets.. the meal was amazing. We started off with the baked sweet potato appetizer. Based off the photos we saw, we thought this would be thinly sliced potato crisps.. we were so wrong. It was 4 halves of 2 big sweet potatoes and every bite was delicious.. The flavors and play on texture with the pickled onions was chef's kiss! The creme freiche was a nice touch as well. Honestly, at this point, I was already halfway full with the sour, but we had two more plates coming at us. We ordered the rigatoni arribata and the guanciale pizza. I was a bit hesitant about the rigatoni because my experience with arribata is that it can be a little bitter rather than spicy. I think the burrata and pesto helped mask the bitterness of the arribata. Also what a cool presentation of the pesto! Never seen such a unique play on a simple dish. The pasta itself was super bouncy and soft.. quite possibly the best pasta we both have ever tried. The flavor and sauce was just as good.. we ended up dipping the pizza crusts into the pasta sauce! The pizza was thin and crispy and the hot honey really helped balance the saltiness of the bacon. Between the pizza and pasta, I enjoyed the pasta more but you cannot go wrong with either. For being our first meal for our trip, we really went overboard but we both agreed it was well worth it. Everything we ate was beyond our expectations, especially for a happy hour! Such a cute restaurant as well with bar seating and second floor tables as well. Our waitress was also super attentive and sweet throughout our whole meal. Friendly staff and a relaxed vibe made for a great experience. The buttermilk fried chicken was excellent! It was crispy and full of flavor. I especially loved the lobster spaghetti. The short rib was a bit salty, and the bavette steak smaller than expected, but everything was high quality overall. Definitely worth a visit! read more

I've been to Nightingales probably 3-4 times now and each time it's been pretty good. We came for happy hour this time. We had the fried chicken, fries, pepperoni pizza and the Margherita pizza. The pizza was thin and chewy. Lots of toppings. Just the right amount of savouriness. The fries were probably my favourite. Could be a bit crispier. The spice on the outside gives it a bit of sourness which makes it somewhat addicting. I get the fried chicken every time I come. They sweetness balances off everything nicely and the pickles are just the cherry on top. Every time I come, the service is always very nice and friendly and this time was no exception. If you want to go somewhere to hang out with friends with okay food and drinks and a laid back atmosphere with decent service. This would be my choice downtown read more
