A tale of two restaurants: the dine-in experience and the takeout experience aren't just polar opposites. They're at opposite ends of the solar system. Go in person. When the pizza comes straight out of that oven, piping hot and bubbly, it's an absolute revelation. Especially that Detroit style with the frico. Oh, man, is it ever good, and enough that you can cut the abrupt and often rude service some slack. Delivery from AJ's, by contrast, is one of the biggest mistakes you will ever make, as it's often painfully slow (like 90 min-2 hr slow). So, by the time your order arrives, and assuming you received the right order, it's often a lukewarm, rock hard and/or greasy mess and unrecognizable compared to what you can get dining in. For the price, you might as well light the money on fire. I haven't been back in a while because I've made it a rule not to order from here unless I have the time to physically go and eat it there. It is worth it to pay the premium for the product if you're going to consume it within a few minutes of it coming out of the oven. Otherwise, take a pass. read more

Was really craving Detroit-style deep-dish pizza, and AJ's did not disappoint! The place was packed, so definitely go early. Their other kitchen was under renovation, which slowed down takeout--there was a 2-hour wait, so we decided to dine in instead. Service was good, and they were upfront about the wait time. Our food took about 45 minutes, but it was worth it! The Roni Detroit was absolutely scrumptious--cheesy, crispy, and so satisfying. Personally I would've preferred a bit more cheese. But husband loved it! Also tried a slice of mushroom New York-style pizza; the crust was a bit dry, but the topping was delicious. Overall, would 100% return for the Detroit style! read more

Came on a Sunday for their all day happy hour, and absolutely LOVED the vibes here! Football games were playing on the TVs, and everyone was cheering for their team and had their favorite team jerseys on! The kitchen was super busy with doughs being tossed, pizzas being pulled out of the oven, and people picking up pizzas to go! They had 2 flavours for happy hour slices, a Brooklyn Sicilian pizza slice ($6) and a cheese ($4.25). We also ordered a mini AJ's Detroit Red Top pizza ($24). I enjoyed the Brooklyn Sicilian pizza the most, and found the cheese one pretty average. The Detroit pizza was super fresh when it came to us, and loved the fresh tomato sauce! Came here for the first time and grabbed a single slice to go! Friendly staff at the front explaining what slice is available. I ordered one slice of their Sicilian - it's a square thick cut with pepperoni and meat - I really enjoyed it. Great crunch and good flavours - a little bit on the saltier side because of the pepperoni, but it was fresh and hot and had a cheesy pull from my first bite! Such a solid place for good pizza and beer! We got the queen bee and it was so so delicious. I love the use of hot honey in absolutely everything so this was such a treat. Really good option of beers as well! Only downside is that the place is small and there is a good amount of wait most of the time. With a bar style decor, sports tv, high chairs and bar seating area the small space made for a neat Pizza joint. It was quite busy with both take out orders as well as inside, with limited seating. I enjoy the tomato sauce so much, the best tomato sauce I ever had on a pizza, you can tell the tomatoes are fresh and welled season. Just an all round great pizza. Friday night date night and we were keen to try this place out after seeing it on Instagram. Arrived around 7:00 p.m. and it was packed with a steady line of people outside. Rookie mistake, I didn't make a reservation, so if you're planning a trip here definitely call ahead. We were told half an hour for a table but it was more like an hour and fifteen before we got in. All staff were quite friendly and provided helpful suggestions on what to eat and providing estimates on how long our wait would be. The restaurant is quite small and when busy it's jammed with people. We were seated near a large table of rowdy patrons and as a result it's quite loud and resembled more of a bar scene than a pizza joint. Our table was by the door, and due to the size and layout of the restaurant, people waiting kept hovering over our table and propping the door open which became annoying. Overall was clean and welcoming. Our table was extremely sticky though, like it needed to be resealed, and my arms and menus kept sticking to it. We started with the garlic nots which came out quickly and were amazingly good. Ample freshly grated parm, and the marinara for dipping was devine. Definitely a great start. We ordered the New York Sicilian and the Detroit red top. The Detroit red top was the fave of the two pizzas which was a surprise as it was the underdog coming in. The dough was on a focaccia style base with the same delicious sauce as the garlic nots. The sides were adorned with crunchy charred cheese. The Sicilian wasn't the favourite and admittedly wasn't what we meant to order. Not a huge fan of square pizza. The middle pieces were overly sauced which was a complete mess when trying to eat. One piece down and I was left with a sloppy plate of sauce and cheese. Dough on this one was much chewier, tasty, but not our fave. Staff were all great, but we had to ask several times for boxes for our leftovers as our server seemed to disappear near the end of our meal. She also never returned to fill our waters, but other than that she was a solid server given the number of tables in the restaurant. read more

Second time around. Previous was take out- which turned out to be not so great. Want to see dining in was any better. Ordered the Maui Wowie Detroit "deep dish". Got to be honest size wise it was damn filling. But.... I am not crazy about all that pineapples and excessive juice on a pizza. Didn't have a problem with pineapples on Hawaiian, somehow on this with globs of marinara sauce was kind of nauseating for me. Not the greatest combo. Also I would really not consider this as deep dish as the breading is what made up the thickness. Steep pricing. I would stick to the regular pizzas and send it back if it was burnt. We had a Supreme New Yorker large pie and it was amazing. Great crust, just the right amount of sauce with a little kick. The sausage and pepperoni were delicious. AJ's is the best Pizza this side of Brooklyn. Each time I go alone or with friends we find a friendly welcoming atmosphere. The staff are great with a certain Mt. Pleasant style? Friendly and funny efficient and effective. I always enjoy all the pizza however my favorites are the mushroom and artichoke and pepperoni. Simple yet satisfying. The Brooklyn is special served in squares with hot pepperoni and rich tomato sauce. The owner is often on site and takes pride both in his business and in treating customers like old friends. Good pizza, terrible value. Sorry to fans here but I cannot justify their pricing at all. It's a total gouge. Not only that if you order by the slice it's actually less expensive than ordering an entire pizza which makes zero sense. We ordered the AJ's Roni Detroit pizza and it came with 6 slices for $38 (if you ordered it by the slice it's $6, so $6 x 6 = $36). We also ordered the Mount Pleasant Veggie which was more a Neapolitan style "thin" crust for $33.00. Both were good pizzas, but nothing really spectacular to be honest. The total bill was $75 for 2 pizzas. Listen, I'm all about quality and I am totally willing to pay for it but the value proposition is so far off I have to emphasize it. I am a huge pizza fan, but I can't say I'll be back unfortunately. They really need to reconsider their pricing. But I guess if they are able to fill their restaurant up and have a semi-cult following they must be doing something right. I just can't see what that is. read more

Friday night pizza night out, arrived at 1930- place was popping with pizza lovers. Dumb me didn't make a reservation, put name on waiting list and luckily a table cleared in approx 20 mins. 3 TV screens with hockey game on Managed to score a table for 3 even though I wouldn't have minded sitting on counter. Ordered the Detroit Roni pizza (cut into 6 large pieces) and a Caesar salad. Nice variety of draft beers also on tap. When served, the pizza is put on a stand which frees up some space on the table Attention all deep dish pizza lovers, this deep dish Detroit pizza lives up to it's word of mouth reputation, cheesy, crushed tomato sauce, crispy bottom, burnt crusty cheese crust, truly a work of art. Not the normal thin pizza crust but a thicker chewier crust, crushed tomato sauce placed on top of the cheese was very fresh natural tasting, this sauce should be patented and used in all pizza joints; the world would be a better place! Solid but somewhat pricy pizza joint in Mount Pleasant. Parking is available on the side streets. The inside is pretty packed. Something to keep in mind. They do a pretty good job with the NYC theme. Also this place gets pretty full on the weekends. Staff were friendly and quick. No complaints. For beer they have a decent local craft beer selection, as well an exclusive AJ's lager (brewed by Main Street). The pizzas are of the thin crust variety. Pricing is a bit high as of the time of writing, but the quality is decent. Supreme New Yorker - pepperoni, Italian sausage, ricotta cheese. This one hit the spot. Tropical Reeves - pineapple, bacon, honey. Buddy and I found this one a bit strange. The honey throws everything off. Honestly I'd try another pizza flavour. Small pizza joint with amazing pizza. There is street parking nearby. I came on a Friday night and there were no issues with finding parking. My friends and I made a reservation, and was seated at a high table (there are NO coat racks so...good luck). It can also get pretty smoky, since the ventilation isn't the best, and it is a small place, so you've been warned. Staff and super friendly. Darn, I forgot the exact items we ordered but: 1. The Siena Pesto pizza 18inch that had fire roasted tomatoes, olives, pesto, tomato sauce, and cheese, lots of cheese! We tried calling first to place an order (call before 6pm people or you ain't getting pie) but they were so busy so we just drove down and they had orders up to their ears but were nice enough to pop ours in within 15 mins! We didn't wait long at all and headed home with zza in hand. Omg it smelled so good in the car. The chargrilled tomatoes make this pie as well as the distro of ingredients is ace! I ordered a pepperoni with mushrooms from this establishment and was to be delivered by Uber Eats. I waited 2 1/2 hours. I repeatedly called the restaurant talked to the manager Trev, who promised me that they had made a pizza, but it wasn't their liking so then they remade a pizza supposedly as my Uber driver was calling me because he was waiting outside in the rain for over an hour and a half, then was promised a gift card for the restaurant for all the mixup. When my pizza arrived. It was flipped over all the topping. It slid off no gift card so then when I called the restaurant while the driver was there, he said that he'd put the card in the box. The card was not in the box. The Uber driver said it wasn't there so then was promised to be emailed a gift card which never arrived. The pizza taste called was horrible empty promises countless times I even went to the restaurant to speak to the manager and he did not return my call once again very disappointing and everything about this restaurant. My favourite was the Roni Detroit. The thick crust dough and the cheesy crust is what made it for me. Don't forget to get the Mikes hot honey sauce for dipping or drizzling. Wanted to check out this place because we were looking for somewhere that does something close to Chicago deep dish, and the reviews were generally very strong. A really great pizza. We order the Maui Wowie Detroit and a New Yorker Supreme. The kids loved the crunchy bottom crust on the New Yorker. We order it with the roni, which is basic tiny cup sized pepperoni. The Detroit style pizzas are very dough heavy. The cheesey burnt crust was delicious - the dough was a little spongey versus what I've had in Chicago which I would describe as more flaky. I ordered wine and it was served in small craft with a short glass. So, that's a sign to drink beer and not wine here, although the wine was fine. It was very hot inside the restaurant. Our waiter was new and very friendly. Our hostess was getting a hard time from one of the other patrons - and she was gracious under that pressure. Food really great tasting but does take a while to get to the table - but is worth it, ambiance was ok, servers were friendly. read more

I've tried this place once for regular sliced Newyork style pizzas and it was just okay, thought I'd give it another chance with their deep dish Detroit pizzas. We got the: * Maui Wowie Detroit Soooo much dough, it wasn't really my cup of tea. If I would compare this oily pizza, it'd be comparable to Pizza Hut but I paid $37 for Pizza Hut quality. The edges are super burnt, I like crisp but the burnt edges of cheese aren't edible. Overall I DONT RECOMMEND this place for pizza, there's much better places for pizza like Sprezzatura! read more

This establishment has the worst customer service I've ever encountered at a restaurant. I ordered online and received the wrong sized pizza (14" instead of 18"), I called the restaurant to ask for a partial refund of the difference in cost. The staff at AJ's told me to email their support email. Which I did and sent photo evidence of the mix-up with the order. It took them a week to email me back and say they could issue me a partial refund, but did not actually send any money back to my account. I followed up again and have not heard back, it's been almost three weeks and I still have not been issued my money back. The food here is decent, but this experience has really put me off of this place. I would urge caution when ordering take out from this place. read more
