I was so impressed with the service and the food! It is now the top of my list for seafood in Charleston. I am an avid foodie and the tuna oysters, peach and tomato salad, the caviar, and lobster entree! Everything had it's own flavor and was made with thought and great execution. This was a sad and disappointing dinner, girls trip with 4 other ladies. Our waitress rushed us through, was not very friendly, the food was very underwhelming and did not meet our expectations as a group, we probably ordered about 1/4 of the menu. After we told the manager about the lack of service he took over the billing and at the end he needed up switching credit cards and tabs and had to be reversed. We had an amazing meal at Nico! We started with the crab and caviar along with the shrimp cocktail. Both were super fresh and both the cocktail sauce and tartar sauce for the shrimp were delicious. We then shared the fries with Camembert fondue, the scallops, and the gnocchi with shrimp and crab. The fries were nice and crispy but the fondue was a little on the runny side, still great if you could get a bite to your mouth before all the cheese dripped off though! Between the two entrees, I enjoyed the scallops a little more than the gnocchi... mainly because the buttery sauce the scallops came with is basically crack. It's that good. Both dishes came with an impressive amount of scallops or shrimp and crab respectively. We will be back for more fresh seafood soon!! read more

Since we pass Nico twenty times a week, we finally decided to try it. Stopped in Sunday since they are open for lunch now on the weekends. The space is well done, very pretty open and airy. Nice outdoor seating area and bar as well. Staff all looks very french in their striped shirts and there is great attention to detail. The waiter was a bit slow - though the place was pretty empty - and overly explained his favorites to the point where I just wanted him to stop. Didn't order drinks but some of the bloody marys that walked by looked really good. The raw bar is clearly their specialty and it seems like they are striving to be known as the premier oyster bar on Shem Creek. Not sure why they have not expanded their menu to suit more of lunch brunch crowd as it seems far more suited for dinner. Went with the tuna tartare; nicely seasoned but the tuna should be the star and there was way too much chopped bell pepper. The beets were very good; with golden raisins, and fennel and goat cheese. The lobster roll - at $31 - served with frites has a good amount of lobster but it is way overpriced and was in desperate need of seasoning. Oysters were very good, presented in a beautiful manner. Cute little personal squeeze jars of sauces to accompany them, but one was not cut off at the top and they are hard to use, I'd rather have a small bowl to scoop the sauce from. The ceviche was also good, small but well done. Overall, their prices are too high (for lunch at least) and they aren't adding anything to attract a brunch crowd menu wise. Straight to it. Raw Bar: -Crab + Caviar: A great little treat. Light and tasty. -12 oysters: 6 various oysters on the daily menu. Great presentation and it also came with little sliced baguettes. Comes with hot sauce and lemon juice in little blue squeeze bottles. Wood Fired: -Meuinere Mussels: I enjoyed the mussels very much. Great, simple flavor. -Onion Soup: Skip. I was not a fan. Soup had a watery consistency that didn't taste right. -Calamari: Definitely order. Crunchy with the perfect amount of seasoning to it. -Pasta Fruits De Mer: SKIP!! Wow, this was a big let down. Especially for the price.. This dish was absolutely bland and had no taste to it at all. I understand letting scallops and shrimp be the stars of the dish, but it tasted like nothing at all. Don't bother wasting your money on this dish. Dessert: Chocolate Cake with Ice Cream: Warm and rich. It was a good dish to end on. Libations: -Tequila Frappe: my favorite drink here out of the two I had. This drink was refreshing and had the right amount of tequila in it. -French Martini: not memorable. I had a sip of my boyfriend's Tequila Frappe and decided to order it instead. Overall, NICO had hits and clear misses, but I'm glad we came to check it out. I am without question a food snob and have been privileged to eat at some of the best restaurants in America thanks to my job. Restaurant is at a busy location in Mt. pleasant. I loved that they offered free complimentary valet service so no struggle looking for parking on a busy saturday night. Friendly staff...the host, server were very professional and friendly. The food was good but they charge alot for small amount of food. I ordered mussells and glad it came with bread to fill me up. My hubby and one other guest ordered fried shrimp and it was more like a snack and not a meal. I wish i was into oysters but im not. I would have tried since it known for its oysters. read more

The reviews were stellar, so I made a reservation 2 weeks prior for an early dinner @ 5pm on Thursday afternoon/early evening. I received multiple texts about my reservation, arrival, parking, etc. As a preface, I live in a major metropolitan area (Dallas, TX), and am well traveled and have dined at many fine dining establishments around the world. When I arrived, @ 4:45pm, I was seated immediately & did receive attentive, yet hurried, service, despite the fact I was one of the very FEW people in an almost EMPTY restaurant! When I left, there were no more than 20 people in the entire place - outside & inside! Yet I was rushed to finish my food & get out. The food was good, but not great. Went for brunch. We were seated immediately which was a welcomed surprise for the time of day on a Saturday. I wish I could remember the name of our server, he was fantastic, our friends were running late and he offered a lot of great insight into the menu options and even brought us a complimentary glass of champagne to "continue the great morning that we were already having." Once our group ordered, the food did not take long to come out and it was phenomenal! I got the monte cristo. Highly recommend it. They make make a bread pudding the night before and then they cut it into thick slices of toast and make French toast out of that and use it as the bread for the sandwich. Our waiter Nick was a sea of knowledge engaging us with the stories about each of the oyster farms personally visited by the owners in order to find the best on the East Coast. The desserts were superb. When we thought we could fit nothing else in our bellies, Nick painted a picture with words that had us salivating once again. We ended up having the creme brûlée and the baked Alaskan, and I'm pretty sure the waiter had just as much fun lighting them on fire in front of us we did watching him. I put 3 stars simply for the fact that upon arriving at the restaurant, two separate hostesses asked my party of 2 if we had reservations, which we didn't. They said they had no room inside the empty restaurant and one table outside on the wide open deck. There were 6 people at the outside bar and 2 tables taken. Just put a bad taste in our mouths. That being said. The food was really delicious and beautiful. The oysters were presented beautifully and the calamari was spectacular. Some of the best I've ever had. So, either a ton of no-shows missed some great food for the 45 minutes we sat there or the place wants to try and put off an un-welcomed exclusive/busy vibe. Came to Charleston for my birthday to see friends. I'm from Atlanta and work in the hospitality industry for over 20years. We looked up places near my friends place in Mount Pleasent and liked the menu and reviews at Nicos. When we arrived there was hardly anyone at the outside bar. Nice setting so we chose to sit at the bar. We ordered drinks and apps and were pretty disappointed with the first round. The tartar was bland, the mussels were awful. The side of cabbage was however delicious. I haven't seen my girls in a while and we were catching up and of course sharing about our stressful holidays. At this point and time we were the only guest at the outside bar. My friend and I can get wrapped up in our conversation and our voices do carry but we are at a bar, right? So we said a four letter word, no biggie bc we are adults at an adult establishment and we were talking to each other but our bartender Patrick walked over and told us to "hush"! It was rude, embarrassing and uncalled for. We were fine to leave without complaining about the mediocore food bc we were there to enjoy my birthday and enjoyed our time together. But to hushed! Its is unacceptable. When my friend spoke to manager, she argued and said we used language we did not use and I again I go to the point of we were having a conversation not saying bad things to other people. Needless to say this was a terrible experience not only in food but in service and terribly disappointing on how management addressed this. There are a hundred fantastic restaurants in Charleston, this is not one of them. Do not waste your time or money. Update.....the manager of this establishment sent a review to my friends restaurant that her family owns in Brazil. They sent an untrue and nasty review. Two things are very wrong with this. One, our experience and review of their establishment has zero to do a business her family owns in another country. Two, this clearly shows how disrespectful, unprofessional and down right petty these people are. We had a right to post our experience. We had a right to feel embarrassed and upset about being "hushed" like children instead of asked to take it down a notch. This is not a Michelin star exclusive fantastic establishment, which I have been privileged to dine in, this is by far the worst food I've ever had in Charleston. Your service, your management and your ability to diffuse and handle a very simple issue shows your lack of intelligence, respect and overall ability to have a long standing business. These people have behaved far more inappropriately than a few women talking a little loudly and using a profanity. You say we are not worthy of a truck stop! Look in the mirror. We were treated to dinner by a family member and I don't even have the words to describe our wonderful experience. We Ubered from our hotel in Charleston- about 15 minutes and got a seat right at the bar and were about the see all of the action. The ambiance was amazing and the staff were exceptional. We started with cocktails. I have been in a citrus mood and the French Master really hit the spot for me. My picky "sweet Bourbon Manhattan"- drinking husband said his two Manhattan'a were out of this world. The food just kept coming at our location. Each staff member took the time to explain each ingredient and origin- as if we could, we loved each bite even more. We started with an oyster assortment of 4 different kinds- getting saltier as we went around. The sauces were delicious- the homemade hot sauce, the homemade vinegar sauce, and I could actually eat the cocktail sauce because the horseradish was not overpowering. Then we had the shrimp cocktail- loved that spice on the shrimp! We also had the crab and caviar- holy moly- such taste in a tiny shot glass- loved this! The calamari was delicious- sweet and spicy, with cognac aioli --yum! Their calamari is high-grade sweet American calamari. One of the highlights was the beef pate - amazing texture and such a fresh taste! Finally, the winner of the night, the dish my husband claimed could be his last, the dish we couldn't get enough of--- the bacon clams dish. The clams were good, but let's talk about the sauce for a minute: Perfect mix of spices that sailed my mind off to a place like Morocco, sweet peppers, a tiny delicious cuts of pork belly---order more baguette! John C., our server promptly welcomed us and took our drink orders. He was very patient with my inquiries about the menu. We ordered the baked oysters for an appetizer. They were amazing!! The menu is in French which makes things interesting. My husband had a dish that was their version of a Frogmore stew. It was very fresh and healthy. It could have used more flavor and lacked any taste. I ordered a dish that was similar to lobster bisque, but with eggs and a pastry included. My dish was flavorful and I enjoyed my drink (vodka, basil, cucumber and lime with crushed ice).The owner came over and greeted us. Overall the experience was nice. The only negatives were the price in light of the amount of food we received. We basically had three appetizers. Also, I noticed a lot of taxes on the receipt, but maybe that's the case at restaurants in this area. I really haven't been paying attention. On a side note, we arrived right at 5 p.m., parked and walked in. When we left they were making everyone valet park. Nico's was recommended to us by a family member and we were delighted by the experience. Great service and attentive staff. The cocktails are fun and fresh. The food came to us promptly and our half dozen oysters Provencal so we're good...my " I will never eat oysters fiancée" ate two of them. Mains were right sized and delicate. I had the Quenelle and she had the trout almandine. Both were light, flavorful and I recommend them both. The side of grilled cabbage was unique and the acidity of the sauce was a great counterbalance to the cream sauces on our dishes. The potato gratin is smooth with a crispy top layer. Saw the desserts.....but we had not room for more. One more thing....the Chef de Partie at the ovens is where a lot of the magic is happening. Great job CWH. The service staff....Olivia and Kareem! Excellent seafood, our favorite meal in Charleston. We fit this in on our last day and were so glad we did. We shared the baked oysters, mussels, tuna tartare, beets, asparagus, and salad, which was a good amount of food for three people. Everything was delicious. The sauce on both the mussels and the oysters was so good we were ready to eat it with our spoons (the mussels did come with good bread for dipping). All the seafood tasted really fresh. The prices were impressive as well. The vegetables were $6 and a good quantity of each. The seafood dishes were each $12-14. The inside of the restaurant is nice and modern. We came with a baby in a stroller and they were accommodating. The restaurant was loud enough that we didn't feel disruptive when our baby cried a bit at the end. They have their own parking lot with valet so the parking was easy as well. read more

I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed Nicos before now. Maybe it's because I've wanted to keep this gem all to myself so reservations don't have to be made a month in advance. Nicos is the least pretentious 5 star (should be Michelin star) dining restaurant of all of Charleston/mount pleasant. I've tried almost every item on the menu and have never been disappointment. Nicos is just the most delicious, well sourced, and primarily local seafood restaurant in town. Just can't believe they even offer a happy hour at such an amazing place. Favorites include / happy hour oysters, Crowe's pasture oysters, fried oysters, octopus rattatouille, potato gratin, gnocchi ,let petite, and the French master. The service here was AMAZING as was the food. Angelique, our server was exceptionally attentive, gracious, and pleasant. We did a staycation for my husband's birthday and decided to eat our way through the low country on July 6. This was our FAVORITE food experience on that venture. We were seated immediately. Food was delivered promptly. It was the only place we've eaten at recently that did not make us feel extra awkward about Covid-19. They were taking all the precautions, but they managed to not make us feel like we were scary or toxic. We ordered the low country oysters, octopus, rattatouille, and seafood rigatoni. Each dish was served at the perfect temperature. My favorite was the octopus. It was served with peach and tomatoes on creme fraiche. It was warm and delicate and the perfect balance of acid and creme. The baguettes were crisp and plentiful. The drinks were well balanced. My husband had a whiskey sour and old fashion. The house Rose was light and fragrant. At the end of the meal they surprised us with a Baked Alaska complete with flames at the table. It was the perfect end to a perfect meal. I've been rather disappointed as of late at the service and food quality of some of our regular go-to restaurants since Covid. Some of my favorite brunch spots have been trying to serve me instant grits with plastic silverware as of late. I understand that restaurants are struggling right now, but Nicos renewed my faith in the possibility of being able to ENJOY a STELLAR meal in the midst the ever changing regulations and uncertainty. This was our second time eating at Nico. The food is outstanding and always fresh. The staff is very friendly and everyone is following the covid guidelines. We sat inside this visit and felt completely safe and comfortable. We had the lobster cocktail for an app and I could have easily ate two more as my meal. I had the fresh catch of swordfish for my entree and it was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. My wife had oysters cooked in the cast iron skillets and they were perfect. This is our go-to for a great seafood dinner, date night and entertaining people from out of town. Definitely recommend the Octopus, Lobster roll, Quenelle, and Calamari. The raw oyster display is gorgeous and their selection makes for a fun night of experimenting with oysters from all over the country. What was also great (and pushed the restaurant up to the next level) is their brunch menu. Now we have a new contender for our favorite brunch spot in Charleston. We went crazy and got the salmon Benedict, lobster roll and biscuits and gravy (and a dozen oysters because...why not?). The bread for all 3 dishes was amazing. The French influences really took center stage with these dishes. Just an amazing meal. Looking forward to trying the rest of the brunch menu.
