We made a reservation at Nico on Memorial Day for a group of 8 and the dining experience was amazing! When we got there, all the waiters/waitresses were wearing masks, they require guests to wash their hands prior to being seated, and they have curtains between some of the tables. We only had oysters. They had a wide variety, accompanied by a brochure describing how they visited many oyster farms and how they prepare them. They do not cut the adductor muscle. We tried seven varieties and after a week of oysters have decided that we prefer cold water ones, ie those from northern waters. I did not care for their method of shucking, not cutting the muscle, but that is a personal preference. Also, instead of fresh lemons they give you a small vial of fresh lemon juice which worked but was also not my preference. Very good and friendly service. read more

There were four of us and we opted to order many items and share around the table and good call that was. We started with the Seafood tower which included 18 Oysters, shrimp, lobster salad , crab salad with caviar etc etc. It was beautiful and delish! We moved on to Tuna tartar, Calamari, Potato Gratin, Heirloom tomato salad and a filet all for sharing. Every single dish was beautiful, artfully prepared, fresh and full of flavor. We all tried a variation of wine by the glass and beer, even after lunch coffee which was smooth and bold. The Rose' by the glass was sweet, crisp and perfect for the meal and dessert followed! Valentine's day is suppose to be a day full of romance and love. We arrived at Nico's at 5 minutes before our reservation time. We waited approx. 15 mins before being sat in the cold patio area. There were several couples that arrived after us who were escorted inside. The patio area had a nice ambiance, it was a bit noisy next to the bar and cold since the only thing btwn us and outside was plastic wall. The heaters and fans were on but it was freezing. Our waiter was Patrick. He was nice. We ordered our fried oysters as an appetizer, ricotta stuffed sea shells and the lobster shrimp roll for our entree. As we waited, we drank our water..30 minutes passed & no appetizer. The hosts came and apologize, he explained somehow our order was mixed up and the kitchen was making our oysters now and removed it from the tab. In my terms they forgot abt us. The owner brought out the appetizer. It was good or we was really hungry! We finished and now we were playing the waiting game again. We asked Patrick and he said your entree should be out in a moment. Minutes later (40 minutes later) we are still waiting on our entrees, again we had to ask. The manager came, explained the kitchen had another mix up. She offered drinks while we waited but we declined. Our water glasses were half full by this time. This special date was turning out to be a night of horror. As we sat, the draft from outdoors became colder. I asked for the fan to be turned off which never happened. Our food finally arrived, it was good. We had to hurry and eat it before it got too cold. We asked for the bill and paid. As we were getting ready to leave, the waiter stopped us and said they had something for us for our troubles. We waited. They brought us a Foie Gras Brulee with cookies. It was great gesture but when my partner bit into one of the black cookies....a clump of hair came out. Ewwww! We told the waiter and he tried to make light of the situation by stating "We arent doing anything right" with a laugh. By that time we were both over it. We quickly left.. Do not get the crawfish quantelle, it's a log of egg mixed with fish, I also found a bone it in. $28 for a basically an egg fish omelet is outrageous absolutely horrible and I felt like garbage after. The restaurant it self is small and intimate, but they make good use of the space. For an appetizer we had a mix of the oysters and clams. They offer a wide selection of both local and imported oysters. As an entree I had the bouillabaisse. I must say it was very good but left me wanting more. My wife surprised me on my birthday with a date night to Nico with a couple friend of ours. It was during Charleston restaurant week in January 2019. We were excited to try it out since we had heard good things from friends. Valet service right off the bat was quick and attentive. Walked right in and were seated promptly at their covered outdoor seating area. It was enclosed with the heaters. First impression was that it was a little average feeling. We were greeted by a young waiter who seemed nice and attentive. It was restaurant week so we were excited to get the special offer they had on their menu. Three of us were planning on ordering off of the restaurant week menu while one of us was going to order something off of the regular menu. When the waiter came back and we started to order, he interrupted my wife and stated that ALL of us had to order from the restaurant week menu or nobody at all. He stated that they had "lots of problems the night before trying to sort out tables orders where only some of the people had ordered off of the restaurant week menu". Not sure why that was our problem but we decided to skip that menu and order off of the regular menu (even though that meant we would spend double the price). We ordered the chef's recommendation oysters appetizer. It was very good but very expensive. Not sure if it was worth it honestly. I ordered the lobster po boy and was disappointed with it. It was like around $35 dollars and I felt that I didn't get my money's worth. My wife and friends ordered various dishes and everyone seemed pretty happy. The cocktails were decent but again, very expensive for what we got. The bill came and it was like $450.00. $225 for each couple. I was very disappointed with the experience and the price. Have been here before and at one time the food was delicious! I was so disappointed when I ate there 3/23 . I should have known when I got a reservation on a Friday night , two hours before the meal. The place was half empty. Anyway, ordered the Camembert oysters for an appetizer and a Maine lobster for an entree. The oysters were (I kid you not) the size of dimes and just as hard and tasteless. The sauce was good. Next up was the lobster that was sold as a very large 1.5 pounds. I received a one armed crawdad. I would think this lobster was under the legal weight limit. After four bites he was history.Where did his other arm go?There are no side dishes served with entrees, absolutely zip. Food is not bad. When we called to make a reservation for 5pm on a Friday for two, we were told only outside was available - so we took it. When we arrived the place was semi empty with lots of tables inside. The outside was warm, but literally there was an extreme amount of mosquitos, practically a mosquito festival. On our faces, food and swimming in our drinks. Aside from that nuisance, one of the foods (the mussels from the restaurant week menu) had a sauce that was so extremely hot, and unfortunately it landed on my breast, and has left a scar. It's been over two weeks now, and I've been hopeful and holding out before reviewing this place to see if it goes away, but nope, it has not and I'm pretty angry about it. I don't know, I feel like there should have been a warning or something about the extreme heat? I've accidentally spilled stuff on me before, but it's never bubbled up and scarred like this. Also, the service felt rushed. We mentioned that we didn't want dessert, but that we're going to get another drink. As we're looking at the menu for more drinks, the server brought over the check. I asked / begged the bartender for mayo and/or aioli and was told "no". 3) valet parking - should be a "pro", yes? Well, not exactly....valet was not available when I arrived so I parked in a parking spot near the front entrance. When I departed after dinner, "abandoned" cars were lined up behind me awaiting valet. I ask the valet person if he could move one of the cars and his gruff response was "no, can't help you". Seriously. He literally could have backed the car up approx 10 feet and I would have been able to get my vehicle out. So, after waiting for approx 10 min, I carefully executed a 24 point turn and was finally able to exit. Bottlom line: Fresh seafood but, I probably will not return. The oysters did not have the meat pulled back, which I thought was weird as it's common practice for oyster bars to pull the meat off the shell for customers. The tuna tartare was pretty awful, did not have a good taste. Our entrees were great especially my friend who ordered the steak. The drinks were good as well! My husband and I went to Nico last night for Valentine's day. My overall takeaway from our meal is that the food was very, very good, and the service was very, very bad. My husband made a reservation for 6pm. We arrived right on time, and were given a great corner booth for two. Our waitress, Meladee (spelling?) came over and immediately asked if we wanted something to drink. We hadn't gotten a chance to even look at the drink menu, which should have been obvious because our menus were flipped over under our plates (we thought they were chargers! so pretty). She came back a few minutes later and we ordered drinks and some oysters. My manhattan was very good, and the oysters we received were all excellent. When the oysters arrived, we ordered a fried calamari, our entrees and one side. Our calamari arrived and was delicious. Our entrees arrived shortly after. I'd say by this point it was around 6:45, so we had been dining for about 45 minutes. At this point, it became clear they had decided they wanted to rush us out of there. After about 10 minutes of eating our entrees and talking, I stopped to take a break. A server (not our waitress) came over and said, "can I get this out of your way" with her hands already on my plate (trout almondine, very good), taking it away. It seemed like I didn't really have a choice, and I was caught so off guard that I just said yes. My husband seemed bummed because I guess he was planning on finishing off what I didn't eat. He was still very much working on his gnocchi when our waitress came over and asked us about dessert, which she didn't seem to notice as a sign that she came over way too early. After describing the dessert options to us, she looked at us blankly, expecting us to order dessert halfway through dinner. We told her we'd need a few more minutes. 5 minutes later I got up to go to the bathroom. I was literally only going to the bathroom to try and slow down the pace of the meal, which is really sad. My husband informed me when I got back to the table that our waitress tried to get him to order dessert WHILE I was in the bathroom! Who does that?! She saw that I had returned to the table and immediately came over to take our dessert order. Our dessert was excellent (baked Alaska) and the man who torched it for us was super friendly. Literally two bites into our dessert, our waitress puts the check on the table. Again, we had only been dining for an hour, and as a busy young couple with not that many chances to go out, we were really looking forward to having a leisurely V-day dinner. We made a pact that we would enjoy our dessert without thinking about the check until we were finished. The waitress came over TWICE while we were still eating to check and see if we had put our card in. Not just a glance, she came over and SHOOK the card box to see if it had been filled. Finally we gave in, paid the check and got the F out of there. It's unfortunate that the poor service made us feel so unwelcome that by the end we couldn't even reflect on how enjoyable the food had been. We probably won't be back. read more

Update: Owner wrote a lovely note and our waiter was having a rough day which is understandable. Brought my husband and our cousin from out of town here last night. We ordered about 24 oysters, the bouillabaisse, and the lobster. Oysters were presented beautifully but overall this place is extraordinarily overpriced for what it is. Our waiter appeared to be having an off day as well, rushing us to order our mains as we had just sat down. This happened twice. Bouillabaisse was a little thin and lacked flavor too and the lobster was a little tough (we are from Boston so it's tough to beat the lobster up here). Unfortunately it wasn't just our waiter either, there is a vibe of unhappy wait staff here that was frankly palpable. I learned that they don't cut the muscle, as you only have about 8 minutes of freshness to eat the oyster before it starts losing flavor. Bloody Mary with Dixie vodka. Made Spicy. Old bay type spiced rim. Excellent vibrant green olives. The bartender knows his stuff. Great tomato flavor! Mimosa. Yummy, of course! Avocado Benedict. Tomato, avocado half, lightly poached egg and hollandaise on the side. First, the egg was barely poached. Who knew you'd get better egg flavor that way? I looove avocados, so a whole avocado? I'm in! The hollandaise was delicate and I prefer it on the side. I subbed the ff for the arugula salad. Monte Cristo. Pan Perdue, French Dijon mustard and homey(skipped the harissa). It all was if it was made to be together. Biscuit w/butter/French strawberry jam. The biscuit was light, flakey and buttery, but I added more creamy butter. The jam was from a pack, but so sweet and tasted of fresh strawberries. Alas, no Southern Charm sightings. $70. Well spent. Both a comment on my review and a separate thanks. If you have not been to Nico - you are absolutely missing out on a blow-your-mind dining experience! As oyster, rosé and lobster roll lovers, Nico quickly became the go-to spot for my husband and me as soon as it opened. There is so much more on the menu to choose from, it truly isn't just an oyster & seafood bar (although both of these are amazing options no matter which direction you choose). The menu is very versatile for a big crowd, which I really like - and having dined a couple of days ago pregnant, I can say there is enough to keep mom & baby very happy as well! Onto our last visit to Nico: First of all, the hospitality is top-notch. Everyone from the host, General Manager, bartender & server made us feel very welcome as soon as we walked in - Victor was an awesome server!! We brought my in-laws and aunt & uncle (in town from Ohio) - they all left very happy. The food: We started with oysters (I didn't partake this time, but the "oh wow's" & "so good" comments made me get food FOMO). There's a great story on how Nico locally sources his oysters that's pretty awesome to read while you are at the table. Next up: the Onion Crab Soup. From the first bite of emmental cheese, onion and crab, to the sopping bread in the soup, it was enjoyable to the last drop. Moving on to the beef tartare (this is coming from my husband) - "The tartare is the best in Charleston - it's has a unique flare on traditional beef tartare with a grilled cheese twist & savory capers. The beef is unbelievable." I literally can't wait to eat raw beef again soon :) I went a bit off course to my normal order and picked off the grands plats - I was craving fish and the Trout Almondine looked (and WAS) phenomenal. Cooked to perfection, juicy, flavorful and gone in .5 seconds. Around the table were orders of the mussels (a brown butter sauce that is divine), a few lobster rolls (bread, lobster, & fries with the camembert fondue - all 5 stars), gnocchi, swordfish, octopus & brussels/cauliflower. Everyone loved their dishes and ate every.single.bite. A few other dishes we've ordered before, loved, but didn't have room for this time are the fried oysters & calamari, shrimp cocktail, bacon clams and potato gratin. Enjoyed a birthday celebratory lunch for my father this afternoon which could not have been any closer to pure perfection. We made reservations for their covered outdoor dining area which was subtle, comfortable & enjoyable! I myself run a restaurant in New York City and tend to notice things in much more detail than others typically would. Our server was attentive at all the perfect times and had ample knowledge on where to guide us within the menu! Their new spring menu was just rolled out so it is ever so slightly different from the menu you'll find currently online however one that I can assure you will not leave you any disappointments. We got 2 dozen oysters (fresh and beautifully presented), the filet mignon (cooked to perfection), the clam's in butter mixed with peppers and bacon (exquisite), the burger (which truly was the best burger I have had in the Charleston area to date and please, no modifications), the baked Alaska (mouthwatering) & lastly the crème brûlée, served with cookies and brownies and fought off by my Father as he claimed it all to himself. I'd like to acknowledge that I've noticed that the Owner reply's to each and every comment on Yelp weather good or constructive. And while that is a rarity in itself due to the exhausting and continual demands it goes to show you that the amount of love and care she and her family put into their kitchen, menu, team & establishment are something that you can taste from the first bite of food to see while looking around and watching the employee's "applauding" style work ethic.
