An early morning event nearby brought us to Nick's, thanks to Yelp reviews. Classic diner -- it's tiny inside with just about 8 tables and a long counter with bar stools. Just squeeze in next to your neighbor. No kids menu, but our kiddo had ridiculously huge pancakes (2 for $4.85). I asked the waitress for a recommendation of the creamed chipped beef or sausage gravy, and she said that both are good, but the chipped beef is more popular -- I had it over toast ($8) and the portion was huge. Third diner had three giant pancakes and scrambled eggs ($8), and we shared a giant side order of delicious diner hash browns, complete with peppers and onions. Service was great and although the food took longer to arrive than I would have guessed, it was fun to watch the line cooks sling potatoes. Nick's is a real local place with great food and great service. My favorites are the Greek omelette (with feta and gyro meat, yum!) and corned beef hash. Nick's is a terrific little neighborhood diner that's been there for decades. It's a classic open kitchen layout and serves up all of the breakfast staples you would expect. This was a good diner! The food was fairly priced, and its definitely pretty divey. THEY ONLY TAKE CASH!!! Take heed! But they do have a general atm in the restaurant. If you are looking for an authentic diner experience with good breakfast here you go. Nothing too special. I personally will not be adding it to my list of go to spots in Silver Spring. Also, very hard to find parking, we ended up in the laundromat lot across the street. Just some good eatin. Love the friendly family atmosphere. My husband started going there regularly on weekdays. We go together now on weekends and days I'm off work. This family-owned business is such a joy, and a true gem in our neighborhood. We have a LOT of eateries to choose from in our area, but we seem to always choose the tried and true great breakfast food and cozy atmosphere at Nick's, where the owners and staff not only know you, they engage you in conversations about life events (the birth of grandchildren, travel, etc.), picking up where we left off the last time we were there. Came in for a late breakfast/lunch one weekday. Fortunately, it wasn't busy during this time. So parking and grabbing a table wasn't a problem for us! It's an old school diner feel both tables and counter seating. It's very well kept, and the kitchen is out in the open. So you can see all the magic happen. It's fairly clean with lots of natural lighting. Prices are good and reasonable! Service was good and quick. I had the two fried eggs, bacon, home fries with toast. My girlfriend had the gyro and feta omelet, which came with home fries and a plain pancake on the side. We thought the food was good, but nothing amazing. My bacon was actually way overcooked. And the gyro meat was super over seasoned. The pancake was a little dry for my taste. Nick's is a cash only establishment. And oddly, they don't total the check for you. Once you are handed the check, you go up to the counter to pay. They don't calculate the tax in until you go up to the counter, and the numbers seemed off for us. But we let it go. I've known about this place the entire time I've lived in the area and expected it to be one of those hole in the wall joints that served good ol fashion home cookin, but I always wrote it off thinking I could just make my normal breakfasts at home just as good. I've realized today, after eating there that I've been missing out! All those times I used to work from home, getting up late, I could have instead been sitting on one of their semi uncomfortable stools eating some of the best damn pancakes this side of the Appalcia. Now, don't go getting me wrong, this place is not offering something you may have never had before, but damn do they nail it in their delivery of standard breakfast fare. Chocolate chip pancakes were gone in around a minute. The bacon, just textbook strips of cured fantasy. The ham looked amazing, though I didn't partake this go around. My friends, don't underestimate and think that by going to Farmers you're going to have a better meal. I think Nick's is superior. Very friendly staff! They seemed to recognize customers which was sweet. Surely has an authentic old diner vibe but not gimmicky, which is refreshing. about 30 seats, 15 bar stools. I sat at a table and ordered the banana pancakes ($9) and a coffee. The pancakes were great! the banana was slightly caramelized, and the cake was fluffy. 3 pancakes made a huge portion! I don't know how or why I always seem to overlook this place, especially since I love old school diners. They probably have the best pancakes I've ever had...so fluffy and tasty, you could probably eat them without syrup. I always have a soft spot for places that serve scrapple, and theirs is delicious. I've only ever gotten their breakfast (no matter the time), but the other dishes always look great, too. The staff is always friendly and the prices can't be beat. Went for the first time today and was impressed. The lady behind the counter was very kind and hardworking. I thought it was pretty cool that you can see the cooks doing their thing. I loved the atmosphere. I was a little surprised that it was CASH ONLY but not a huge problem because they have an ATM...charged fees but oh well. The food was great and abundant. I would like to start by saying that the costumer service at this place is absolutely outstanding! Very friendly and caring staff. Since it was my first time and I was in a rush, I ordered the "Big breakfast," 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, and home fries (first item on the menu... haha!). The food was very tasty and the portions were large. I loved the consistency of the pancakes. They were crispy on the top with a sort of grilled pattern ( I assume they do that on purpose so the butter or jelly can easily add to the pancake) and fluffy on the inside. Not in the usual, the waitress didn't smile at me when she greeted our table or the the coffee was only luke warm kind of sucks. I don't even want to describe the rancid piece of "ham" that I consumed. Do trust me fellow reader that I am not exaggerating. Yes, yes, yes. I know. Never been to Nicks, however, I grew up at Joe's, the former owner who I understand is family with Nick. The photos tell me nothings changed and that's what you want, many decades beginning at the ripe age of 16 years through my early 40's found me at the takeout spot for a Nicks breakfast. It was the homefries that Joe/Nick make that are just plain old-school and that giant leg of ham that sat there in it's the hallowed spot waiting for a portion to join the fresh eggs that Joe was so expert in. If you like greasy spoon dives, this is the real deal, nothing changes and sometimes in life that's a good thing. CASH ONLY!?! How? What? Who? Aha! I knew I ate lunch somewhere this weekend. Richie (aka Hubbs, Biscuit, Habib, Babe) and I had plans to go to Max's for schwarma, but he forgot that Saturday is the Sabbath and therefore it was closed. Think, McFly, think! Instead, I cooed, "It's ok, babe, we can go anywhere....you want to try some poupousas?" He said, "Not after the nasty one I tried from the Whole Foods deli." That's not really what I said....I think I said, "How do you know that?" Then he told me that a coworker told him about it, plus look at the sign. Derrrr. I notice the large CASH ONLY sign as we walk in the door. Crapola! I only have $9 in my purse and that's not enough for both of us to eat! I thought maybe the sign was old, since the rest of the place looked like a flashback, so I asked, "Really? Cash only?" The cashier said, "Really," in an embarrassed tone due to the bass-ackward way of doing business. Ok. Here it goes. Negotiation time. Who gets to eat? Me!!! I win - hypoglycemia rules!! Ok, it really doesn't, but anyway. I got the gyro to go so that Biscuit could go back to the house and have a cheese & jalapeno tamale - something from the Whole Foods deli that he actually loves to pieces! Let's just say it was edible. I wasn't impressed by the flavor, but the sheer size of this thing was something to be reckoned with. It needed it's own handler and I needed an Oral-B flip top head to fit the monster in to take a bite. Imagine me sitting in the car eating this gyro COVERED in yogurt sauce....I'm trying to scarf it down and remain as lady like as possible and now I've got white creamy stuff all over my face. People in the other cars are conspicuously staring and pedestrians were stopping in the crosswalks, their mouths agape with horror. I tried licking the mess up but my tongue doesn't stretch that far. I became extremely self-aware of the mess I was making and wiped my face with a pile of napkins. Note to self: No gyro-eating in the car if you want to preserve your reputation in Wheaton. Haha - who I am kidding? On a different note, the place is killer cozy, they obviously have a strong Nick's Diner cult following and the waitresses are very pleasant; some are even really Greek! That's cool. They have interesting decor from framed Greek newspaper articles to pictures of Greek sculpture and the one odd nouveau black & white framed art on the wall that seemed very wrong. Nicks is a "sit at the counter" type place for me. The parking lot is very tight and getting in and out of it is like getting a seat here during the rush on the weekend. Excellent breakfast to be had, some of the best scrapple I've eaten. Best diner around silver spring, forks down. Endless coffee, blue plaid tablecloths, cheap delicious 2 egg specials that all come with potatoes and toast. What more could you want? Yum-O! The portions are large and filling and it's actually affordable. 2 can easily have breakfast /lunch for under $20 (or maybe even $15). It is on the small size, but that adds to it's diner flare and it has counter seating too! They are only open for breakfast and lunch and closed on Tuesdays, I believe. Remember, cash only though! The parking lot is tricky, as it appears to only be accessible from University Blvd, but you can exit/enter via the closed chinese restaurant parking lot on Veirs Mill (right before the Sunoco gas station). I virtually live here. Another place walkable from my home and I've been here over 100 times. The service is excellent and the family that runs it is very nice and welcoming. I love the food, it has an authentic diner feel to the place (because its an authentic diner I suppose) and its usually easy to get a seat at the counter. Only downsides are they don't take credit card and the parking can be tough at times but I've never not gotten a space. There are some regulars here you'll see over and over again and its as close as you'll get to a Cheers type feeling in Wheaton. read more

I wouldn't say much of the meat products are made in house but I do like the no frills menu. Creamed chipped beef is something you just don't find at most places, the omelets are a good portion. The breakfast potatoes are an absolute treat and you see them grilling them on a relatively tiny flat top...I gotta respect their food service with the tools that they have. Nick's Diner is a simple and quaint little place that serves up a good ol' American Breakfast. The waiters are friendly and the decor is retro yet not overly so. It's a very comfortable place to be in the morning, although the tables are sometimes a little sticky. I usually get the two egg specials which are pretty good for my big appetite. One time I came in with a group of friends and, one of their glass bottles of ketchup EXPLODED all over me and my food when I opened it. The waitress came over and helped me clean up and even got me a new plate of food. The best surprise came when I got the check and she had removed my order from the bill.
