I recently returned to this place after not being there in years -- like when they opened -- because I've moved a lot. It may be one of the last great sandwich venues in Austin given the demise of Katz's and Fricanno's. You order at the counter, and all the people are super. On my second recent visit, I ordered the pastrami reuben, which some reviewers claimed was the best in Austin. Too much butter or oil had been used to grill the sandwich and, thus, the bread was soggy. It was not the pastrami or the cheese or the kraut or the Russian dressing on the inside -- it was too much butter/oil applied to the bread itself and disappointing. I'm sad to give this place 2 stars as we've read such positive reviews and our neighbors love this spot. I'm hoping we just had bad luck. My husband and I ordered the Black bean veggie burger with fries and the Italian sausage sandwich. We ordered it for takeout and ate it at home. Staff there was super friendly and the space looked nice and clean. They had hand sanitizer and enforced social distancing and wearing a mask, which is a huge plus for us. However, things went downhill once we looked and tasted our food. The Italian sausage sandwich was drenched in so much sauce, it pretty much tasted like sauce and bread. And when you can taste the sausage, it was like a typical sausage you'd get from a hot dog at a carnival (not great quality). As for the black bean veggie burger, the patties were so thick, I couldn't see anything in between until I took off one of the patties. The burger was overall very dry with a whole lot of ketchup. There were barely any onions and small amount of lettuce was stale and soggy. One positive thing was that there was a good amount of tomatoes. The patty seemed like it was pre made and just microwaved for maybe 30 seconds. The sandwich and fries tasted as it this meal was made a couple days ago and was just forgotten. Both were so stale and just a bad experience for us. Based on the quality of food we got, the meal was disappointing and am unsure if we'd go eat here again. read more

I'm overdue on telling y'all about one of my favorite neighborhood spots. I love NeWorlDeli for their sandwiches and service! Their owner is there nearly every time I stop in, and he takes interest in customers and our orders. I've tried a few things off the menu. Tonight I built my own sandwich - a sort of sweet and spicy ham and cheese with peppers and pickles. They're known for their Reubens and Rachels, which are pretty good. I'm not usually a sauerkraut or slaw fan so I have to be in a particular mood to appreciate them. They sure are sloppy and you have to eat them fast before the dressing soaks into the bread! That balance of crispy bread and hot and cold fillings doesn't last for long. I wish we could order half-size sandwiches because not only are the portions unnecessarily big but by the time we get to the second half of a sandwich, it's past its optimal eating time. Only some simpler sandwiches can be halved. Their tuna melt is another popular item that I've liked enough to order multiple times even though I can barely finish it in one sitting. Soups are homemade, so they're very rich. Again, after a filling sandwich, a bowl of soup can be too much. There are a few things on the menu I wouldn't recommend - the cheesesteaks and subs, because their buns lack oomph. Their fries and sweet potato fries are always a little limp. Potato salad was average. After eating here, I never have had room to try their desserts but I've often been awfully close to ordering cake because it looks better than your average bakery cake. Cute deli in central Austin. First time here and I was immediately greeted by the owner(?), Sarah. She asked for my name and was greeting customers by name. That is the atmosphere of this place... We are losing out mom and pops, we need to keep this one alive, as they have been around for 24 years. Food wise, I got a Cuban and Chicken Poblano soup. The winner was for SURE the jersey sloppy joe - the coleslaw added such a great zing and crunch. I got the "wimpy joe" with only on layer and it was more than plenty! NeWorld Deli is a great taste of "Old Austin" - family-owned, a little funky, friendly service with delicious, fresh-made food. I recently invited some co-workers to lunch there and everyone was pleased, for the most part. I had the Chicken Curry Salad plate which was probably the best I've ever had. Yum! The only downside is that, like so many other restaurants, their prices have gone way up. The Reuben sandwich is now $15 and it doesn't come even come with chips. This place is fantastic! Their sandwiches are sooo good. I've never had a bad one. Their grilled cheese is so delicious, especially combined with tomato basil soup. You can add jalapeños and tomatoes for an extra bit of delicious. Their burgers are INCREDIBLE and you must add the fries. They have coffee, tea, beer and wine too. Basically anything you want at any time of day. Their atmosphere is great too. They have music and poetry readings most nights, where you can sip coffee/wine all night. And they have chess sets too! Came here to watch a friend's show one night, and obviously to see what all this Reuben hype is all about. Oh man, it did not disappoint! I tried out their "Award Winning" Reuben with turkey pastrami and it was definitely just that. Coming from a super Russian family I've developed a huge fondness for pickled and sour things, i.e., sauerkraut, and lots of it. It definitely satisfied my sour and tangy craving, but the turkey pastrami was by no means masked by the taste, I savored every delicious flavor happening in that sandwich. They're a little on the pricey side, especially since no sides come standard. That being said, the sandwiches are enormous and we definitely couldn't handle eating anything else after wolfing them down. After a couple hours of digesting though we managed to venture back to the front and nab a piece of cheesecake... obviously we had to taste other aspects of NeWorlDeli.
