A bit confused--he decided to try and make the best of the options--ordering a grilled chicken sandwich with provolone melted on top of the same roll they use for the cheesesteak.---our creativity really didn't pay off much. We dropped in for a bite. It was delicious!! We both had the Rueben sandwich. They are large. So if you don't eat a lot of food order one and split it. Quite filling and very tasty. This is another one of these places that's been around for ages, but that I haven't tried until recently. And now I wish I'd been coming before. The atmosphere/decor feels like a small town sandwich shop somewhere not in Texas, even down to the folk musicians who often play there. But that's perfect. The atmosphere works and it's more than relaxing. Of course, the food is what's important, so let's discuss that. I had the French dip sandwich at the staff's recommendation. (I was torn between that, the meatball sub, a burger, and their Philly cheesesteak.) I'm very glad I had the French dip which is second (only maybe) to Bartlett's prime rib French dip. Perfectly toasted French bread, cheese, and roast beef accompanied by a well-seasoned and hearty au jus. The side of fries that I ordered were also spot on. Hot, crispy, and plenty of potato flavor -- and just a bit thicker than shoestring fries. My dining companion also raved about her club sandwich. I'd especially commend their staff member who noticed that she was about done with her sandwich and thoughtfully offered to bring her a to-go box. We both had dessert because their dessert case looked tempting. My key lime pie was a spot on perfect combination of mild lime flavor, cream, and a simple crust that didn't overwhelm the pie. My dinner companion also gave similar compliments to the carrot cake. All in all, one of the better meals I've had in a while. What my wife and I had: philly cheesesteak, the rachel reuben, side of fries and clam chowder. Since moving into the neighborhood, my wife and I have not yet found our "go to place". Well, the search is over. First, the ambience...great character to the building, nice and spacious interior with a warm feel. There was open mic night halfway through our meal, which made the dining experience enjoyable. The staff was top notch...from taking our order, taking the time to explain the choices, checking on us frequently, and offering a personal satisfaction guarantee, he treated us like we were at a Michelin rated restaurant! The food was fantastic...highlights: perfectly toasted bread and savory flavored juicy meats that slowly soaked the bread so that every bite remained moist and satisfying. The fries were nicely done with a chipotle mayonnaise that really took us by surprise. The ketchup which my wife usually drains, left alone...and she doesn't usually like mayonnaise! The only one thing that worth noting is the clam chowder. It is a Rhode Island chowder without cream, and flavored with dill. I enjoyed it, but it may be surprising for people who are expecting a "traditional" chowder. But as the saying goes..."dont knock it until you try it!" Some of the best sandwiches I've ever had! High quality ingredients, great bread, fresh veggies, tasty meats. The curry chicken salad is AMAZING. Super rich in flavor, authentic tasting spices, just the right consistency. The Reubens are also AMAZING - one of (if not THE) best I've ever had. Even "simple" sandwiches like the Turkey Club are outstanding. They make the kind of sandwiches that make you go "damnnn, this is actually really good!" Nothing bland or boring here. As good as the food is, what really sets this place apart is the service. Everyone that works there is pleasant, kind, and helpful. But the owner, Greg (aka the Deli Lama) goes way above and beyond and gives some of the best customer service I've EVER experienced. We had a slight issue with our order (first time that had ever happened for us here) and Greg immediately thanked us for calling and owned up to making the sandwich himself. He talked to us personally, apologized for the mixup, remade the sandwich himself, and even gave us a personalized note on the to-go box. When I came to pick up the remade sandwich, Greg stepped outside with me to chat and triple check that everything with the new sandwich was correct. He ended up talking to us for about 5 minutes. For an owner to take the time to do something like that was really special. Anyone who works in the service industry knows, it's not about always being perfect, it's about how you handle situations when things go wrong. Just outside of NeWorlDeli's back entrance there's a history of Hyde Park. Today Claire, the owner's daughter on summer break from High School took my order... she was friendly and very cool. Her two sisters were around as well. The youngest approached mom (owner) and said in her... I don't know... 8ish year old way, "Mommy, can I have a job?" And mom sweetly said, "sure, I'd love to give you a job." Minutes later, little cutie was putting paper in serving baskets. Then mom came over and joked about how she and Claire are sisters. Awesome. I'm all about supporting family businesses with family values. And there's just something about talking to Claire and seeing this family interact that screams "this family loves one another WELL... very well" And the food. Yesterday I had the cup o' soup and 1/2 sandwich combo for $6.89 (after 5 it is $7.20). I asked for a Mixed Deli (Ham, Salami, Provolone) and the Chicken Poblano soup. The 1/2 sandwich was really more like a whole sandwich and was excellent. As was the soup and pickle. My friend had the (mild) curry chicken sandwich and the cup of tomato basil... both were also very good. A great value. And our waiter (order at counter before 5, at the table after 5) Beth, was super friendly, awesome, sweet, and helpful. Today I came back (good sign, right?) and had the Reuben. There are signs that say it's the best in Austin. I'm no Reuben expert... I think I've only had one here and at Little Deli (another MUST for Austin sandwich shops) but it was very good. Austin has cochinita pibil that makes your Yucatecan grandmother cry tears of delight. And Austin has BBQ ribs that cause your portly, half-German uncle Adolphus to erupt into bouts of schoolboy enthusiasm. Austin even, surprisingly, has seafood crepes that causes your Vietnamese sister in law--no, not that one, the other one, the one who's a photographer in Bangor, Maine--to utter sentences like "hey, that's pretty authentic." Unfortunately, Austin does not have much in the way of genuinely first-tier sandwiches, particularly that most holy of sandwiches, the one referred to--in austere, forbidding tones--as "The Reuben". I'm talking about the kind of Reuben with succulent, paper-thin corned beef stacked to the heavens on a fresh rye. The kind with a perfect slather of Thousand Island and exactly one-quarter an inch of German sauerkraut. The kind of Reuben that grotesquely fills the gullets of pissed-off New Yorkers in between bouts of shaking their fists menacingly--for no discernible reason whatsoever--at other random, similarly-enraged New Yorkers. I've had a mental block about NeWorlDeli for say.... 15 years. I even worked at the state hospital right across the street for a long time, and never went. I went to UT, and still never went. I lived a few blocks away, and never went. You get it. Yesterday, I finally gave it a chance, and I feel like I have wasted my life away. I ordered the hummus sandwich. There was an ass-load of hummus, perfect bread, and crispy fresh vegetables. The french fries are perfect. The cashier girl, well, I thought I was staring in a mirror, while ordering lunch, talking to an adorable red-head, wearing black plastic glasses. She was much taller, and seemed way cooler than me. The meat eater got a reuben. He's from Brooklyn, and tells me how he used to eat at Katz Deli, with the most perfect... bla bla bla. I get it. He said the NWD reuben seemed to have store-deli meat, way too much sauerkraut, and crappy bread. I have now come to terms with him not being happy with Austin food. NO! You will not find the perfect reuben with meat sliced JUST for you in front of your face by a Jewish man who has worked at the same deli for 40 years. You live in TEXAS now! This isn't Brooklyn!!!! Awesome local deli that I've been meaning to visit forever. I had the hummus sandwich on a french roll. It was perfect, with lots of yummy hummus and loads of fresh veggies.But the standout was the vegetarian reuben. I've had the reuben at Schmaltz, and while it's tasty, I'm just not a fan of fake meat. NeWorlDeli doesn't try to appease a vegetarian with fake pastrami, but rather just replaces meat with avocado, and piles on the sauerkraut and russian dressing before mashing it between perfectly toasted and buttered slices of jewish rye. There's a lot of pressure on pastrami, a lot of competition out there, so if you're super picky, this is a great opportunity to be a little healthier, ditch the meat, and avoid any possible pastrami let-down. I look forward to someday getting this sandwich all for myself. We shared their NY Cheesecake for dessert, and it's definitely in the cheesecake top 5. It was absolutely delicious. This place has an unassuming storefront on Guadalupe, but I'd definitely recommend that you don't overlook it :) Ample seating inside, lots of food to choose from (salads, hot and cold sandwiches, soups, chips, cookies, cakes, etc...) and main root sodas in the fountain. read more

A friend and I went to New World Deli today. I hate being disappointed, I really do. More than that, I hate when people get rude when you let them know you're disappointed. So, we go to the counter - the girl had the personality of a limp piece of lettuce; she was awful. When I asked the soup of the day, she said in her annoyed/bored way "Soups are on the wall over there." So, I look, pick clam chowder in a cup. My friend reads the menu and decides on a sandwich. The lovely counter girl (this is dripping with sarcasm) then asks what kind of bread for the sandwich. We ask her what kind of breads they have to which she, again, responds in her annoyed/bored way "Breads are on the wall over there." A bread is chosen and we sit to wait for our order. There are two gentlemen there who ordered before us. Their names are called and because the guys at the counter are on one side of the restaurant, they on the other, it's hard to hear them at all. The deli guys then begin yelling very rude remarks like "**name of guy** your order is REALLY ready over here, dude - you need to come get it." Now, I am watching this and thinking - why can't annoyed/bored counter girl simply get their attention since she isn't doing ANYTHING and let them know their order is ready? Nobody says anything, so I finally get their attention and let them know. They smile and nod a thank you as they proceed to get their food. At this time my friend's food is ready as well. After two bites, they tell me the sandwich isn't so good and they don't want it. I taste my clam chowder, looking forward to the yummy, creamy clam goodness; instead - I taste dill water. EWWWWWWWWWWWW I make a face and take a huge gulp of my water. I asked my friend to taste it and they thought it was the worst clam chowder they'd ever had as well. It was AWFUL. I take my cup o' soup back to the counter to get a refund. There's no way I am eating this or paying for it. Finally, I get to talk to the lovely counter girl. (YAY) I explain to her that the soup doesn't taste good and that i would like a refund. After much walking about to figure out how to refund the money, the manager/owner(?) comes to the counter and says loudly to me in a somewhat angry tone "What's wrong with the soup?" "It has too much dill - you can't taste any other flavors." "he then says even louder, to me and the rest of the folks in line around me (and loud enough so that others in the restaurant can hear as well) "Well, I won second place in a clam chowder contest with that recipe!" opens the register and slams my money on the counter. **not in anyplace where they KNOW what clam chowder is supposed to taste like...** Is this a pissing contest?! I just smile and say thank you and walk away. My friend and I are then so disgusted by the whole experience we want to leave as quickly as possible. We finish our drinks and walk out. Still one of the top 4 or 5 sandwich shops in town, ranking up there with Toastie's, Fricano's, Little Deli, and Foodheads. The menu is quite extensive, and they have daily soups that are terrific, too. Go to their website and see a video of Greg making their famous Reuben from scratch. They have the best Tuna Melt I've ever had, as well as the best Ham Salad Sandwich, although I have to order the latter a day ahead so Greg has enough time to make the salad mixture. You won't find the Pimento Cheese Sandwich on their menu, either, but just go ahead and order it anyway and they'll gladly serve one up for you in a jiff. Dear NeWorld Deli Sloppy Joe - I think I'm in love. You didn't come out like I expected you to - no ground beef blanketing a soggy bun. No perma-orange oil-based sauce that repeats. Nope, after being let down by the honest and hip counter gal, who explained this wasn't like a regular sloppy joe, I had no idea how right she'd be. Slaw, swiss cheese, two meats, on light rye - all brought together by a special sauce that need not be discovered, heaven, backflips, and alas...I'm totally screwed. Sloppy Joe, our relationship is doomed, you being a sandwich, and knowing that my future Overeaters Anonymous group will be quick to point the finger, I'll always cherish the time we've spent together... read more

3.5 stars I came here by chance because Vino Vino was packed. Michelle C., as well as other ladies from work, and I had just finished a pilates class and we wanted food! I ordered the Curried Tuna Sandwich because it sounded pretty interesting. I was sort of expecting either something terrible or something mediocre but it was actually really good! I ordered it on rye bread - yum. There were bits of almond and grapes in there as well, which added a great twist to my normal ole tuna sandwich. Fries were my sides. I think the healthy tuna helped balance the delicious, golden fries. They were lightly crispy and nicely flavored. Perfect. I don't care, that's how I will justify it. I would give the service here 2-2.5 stars. Our waitress seemed uninterested in checking on us and the food tok a bit to make - we ordered mostly sandwiches and there were maybe 4 other people at the restaurant. When she gave us our check, she passively, and awkwardly, mentioned that it's hard for her to split the check.To me that seems sort of rude especially because she wasn't that great of a server the whole night. I should really be ashamed of myself for taking so long to try this place. It took me about 7 years of driving by this place all the time to finally go in and try this place. Friendly people running a cool spot on the drag. Lots of options for the meat eaters, and then a few for the herbivores. Lets just say, they do not skimp of taste and quality just because someone doesn't eat meat. Great lunch spot, not too crowded, enough room for everyone. Also they don't skimp on size of the sandwiches they produce. The vegetarian rueben is one of the best sandwiches you'll eat. The rye bread is crisped up to perfection, with sauerkraut, avocado, cheese, and loads of Russian dressing. Get the vegetarian rueben. Get the New York style cheesecake (best one in town IMO). Absolutely my new favorite deli in Austin, if not the entire world! I've started studying outside of my apartment a lot more, and I get so frustrated when I go to the usual coffee shops and have to awkwardly hover over people to see if they're leaving and have to deal with limited food options. NeWorlDeli is spacious, has great wifi, has delicious food, has coffee/tea and a full bar all in one. It can get crowded during lunch, but it's never obnoxiously loud or packed. The owners are incredibly nice and involved, they're always walking around and asking people how they are. I've only tried the Turkey&Gruyere sandwich and I get it everytime because it's so good. Get it grilled, it's better that way. The tomato and broccoli&cheese soups are also delicious. AND THERE'S A PARKING LOT?! Wonderful. I am totally obsessed. read more

I know Austin is not a city that prides itself in the selection and quality of delis. I'm jealous of people living in New York, Boston, or Jersey, because there's a lot of competition there for good meat, bread, and creative sandwiches. Unfortunately, even given the lack of competition in this southwest city, the sandwiches at NeWorDeli were unimpressive. First, as I was waiting for my Reuben, I saw them stick it in the microwave. This led me to believe they aren't slinging spatulas on the flat-top griddle back there, and my creation has about as much love in it as an airplane meal. Although I had no real complaints about the corned beef or sauerkraut, they were nothing special either. I could get these items from any grocery store at a fraction of the cost. The bread was less than exciting, too. Isn't that the pillar on which all great sandwiches rest? If you can't find a decent loaf of rye bread or sourdough, don't think you'll send anyone home raving to their friends about your food. Lastly, the turkey with Gruyere was actually a turkey with Gouda. Please don't lie on your menu. At least tell us you don't have an ingredient if you don't plan to stick with what you advertised. Not the end of the world, but the little things matter. Even in Austin, there are better sandwiches to be had. I don't really recommend this one. read more

I have been eating here since they opened over 7 years ago. When I worked down the street I stopped in here at least once a week to pick up food for me and my employees... I no longer live or work in the area but I still stop in for a tasty sandwich several times a year when I am in the area. When I was a regular customer the owner asked if I would have my usual: Sloppy Joe for Kyle, Reuben for Jerry and Eggplant Parm for Yours Truly. On a rare occasion I get a wild hare and try something else. So, I can also say that the Hummus sandwich, Tomato Basil Soup and Curry Chicken Salad (with grapes and pecans and not too much mayo) are also very tasty.. Well, I had been looking forward to trying this place for awhile. I love expensive sandwiches, and after reading all the good stuff about it, I decided to treat myself. Ugh! I got the reuben, and it was so soggy I had to scrape off the disintegrated bread and just eat the corned beef and sauerkraut. Hey, I'm easy, it still should have been pretty good, but it was actually very bland. The kraut wasn't salty or tart, and the beef wasn't spiced enough. Maybe I was wrong for getting it to go, but I work a few blocks away, and it didn't make it. That sandwich was $8. I have had many reubens to go, and I have never seen one this sogged out. Fricano's makes an awesome reuben that holds up to a 3 minute drive back to work, so next time I'm in the mood for an expensive sandwich, I'm going there. I'm from New Jersey, and when you grow up there, you don't have much to be proud of. It smells, the people are rude, and it smells. There really are only two things that I miss from home, and those are decent bagels (sorry Einsteins) and sloppy joe's. For the few people living in Texas who are not from New Jersey, Sloppy Joe's are NOT MANWICHES!!!!! They are deli sandwiches made on rye bread with swiss cheese, russian dressing, cole slaw (right on the sandwiches) and deli meat, typically turkey, roast beef, or corn beef. Anyways, my lovely wife introduced me to New World Deli a few months back, and this place does the best job on these sandwiches that I have ever seen out of the New York/Jersey area. Just delicious, and it makes sense since the owner is from the Garden State. The staff were super friendly, and the portions were huge. On the downside, New World Deli is not remotely near where I live or work, so I am not a regular. read more

Great Food! I love the laid back atmosphere and the 1/2 restaurant service 1/2 self-service dilly-o they got going over here. Hot date or no date (where I fall most of the time), you are guaranteed a good meal. So today I ordered the Curried chicken salad sandwich on rye bread with potato salad . This isn't the all mayoed up chicken salad that you normally find. It's more spread-like in consistency with walnut bits, chicken, smashed grapes, and a nice dose of curry spices. With the tomatoes, lettuce, and my favorite Jew bread, it made ONE TASTY SANDWICH! It's so big that I only finished 1/2 of it and took the rest home for tomorrow's lunch. Good price too! read more

A delicious variety of made-from-scratch sandwiches, salads and soups at a great price! Excellent customer service too. I lived nearby this deli for over a year before finally giving it a try. Once I did, I immediately regretted not coming here sooner. Just think, for about the same price of an out of town franchise's sandwich meal, you could have a better, fresher, quality meal AND support you local Austin business. I eat here about once a week. I am addicted to the hummus sandwich. I am not a huge meat eater, but I tried a bite of the famous sloppy joe, and have to say that it is quality. My husband is from Jersey and noted that it's the real deal. The owners are so friendly, and take care of their customers. If you are unsatisfied with anything they will make it right. They do their best to personalize conversations with customers- they even know my name (maybe I eat here too much????)! The only soup I really enjoy is the broccoli cheese, but it's a bit heavy for me so I usually stick with the pasta salad or cole slaw side. Tip: Order a half sandwich. It's as large as a regular size sandwich. I have no clue how big a regular one is- must be a monster! read more

Just so you all know, I'm not going to give out a lot of 5-stars. That being said, I've been going to this place for years, and will likely continue to for years to come. Let's see... homemade bread? Check. Interesting sammiches? Definitely. Good fast and friendly service? Damn straight. Owner learns your name? That's a no brainer for me! Three words: Curry Chicken Salad. Seriously, I've been hurt by chicken salad before. WE all have suffered through overly mayo-saturated salad which still leaves the chicken miraculously tasting dry. Or is that just me? Well, worry no more! Greg has made a lovely curry chicken salad with grapes and pecans that's just SO tasty. Don't feel like a whole sammich? Well, try their soup and "1/2" sandwich combo. What's the difference between a whole and half a sandwich at this place? Well, if you ever order just the soup, you'll discover these little 1/4 inch thick pieces of bread served alongside for dipping. THAT'S the difference. Seriously, it's worth taking the hit to sample some of their lovely soups. Tomato basil and broccoli cheese are good, and their dill clam chowder is a really interesting take on the classic. Only problem with the soup/sammich combo is that you can't get some of the hot sammich choices with that, like the Tuna Melt, which is damn tasty too! Want to gorge yourself on something truly decadent and meaty? Well, I wasn't always a pseudo-veggie freak, and when I ate red meat I found that the Reuben here was a perfect version of this singular sammich. Done just right. Want to test your ability to unhinge your jaw? Try a sloppy joe! These aren't your typical gooey Manwich meal-on-a-bun-out-of-a-can sloppy joes. These are official, triple-decker, NYC-style monsters that can devour your appetite if you let them sit for too long. Don't get into a staring contest with these creatures! Just dig in and start chompin! Let that NYC slaw and russian dressing run down your chin a little bit! Don't worry about that pickle spear on the side, there's no time! Go go go! Ok. Sorry. Just got carried away. Thing is, there are many options here for lunch, whether you want to stay healthy with soup and salads or if you want to pack your stomach for the long afternoon ahead. I hear they're now open for dinner too. They serve beer and wine during lunch, but I've been told they're getting a liquor license for dinner service. Their dinner menu looks good, kinda like typical American fusion (cajun pasta, fish tacos, grilled salmon). While I haven't tried it I know that Greg has opened 5 different restaurants over the years, so he likely knows how to cook up things other than deli items. But don't discount the deli! Go there for lunch! Now! And then go there for dinner and tell me how it is. Oh, and if it matters to anyone, they have really cute girls behind the counter.
