So so mediocre. Such a shame because I cannot find a decent Chinese restaurant in the UWS aside from Han Dynasty which is muuuuch more expensive than the other surrounding spots. Had dinner at this physical location this time. It's small but the tables rotate out at a decent rate. We had reservations, which I'd recommend. We were in a larger parry, and our table was waiting when we arrived. We ordered all of the things we had previously ordered and had delivered to the house. Spicy Prawns, Orange Chicken, Lo Mein, Prawns with Hunan sauce, Beef and Peppers, Chung Qing Spicy Chicken, Pork pan fried Dumplings, and Pork Moo Shu. I was so excited as this has been my favorite Chinese Food in the city for some time. But it was drastically different from every other time. The Moo Shu had almost no flavor at all. The orange chicken also lacked flavor and was fatty meat. After bitting into 2 pieces of fat, I was unable to try anymore. I liked the pan fried dumplings, but they too were not as good as previously. The Spicy Chicken seemed to still be a hit, as well as the beef and peppers. But overall, this meal was disappointing to me. I'm not sure if there is a rush to keep the tables / customers rotating to fit waiting parties, or if there was some other reason, but what I can tell you is I was blown away by the difference in this last meal. Met a friend for lunch, and their lunch specials are great choices. I had the hot and sur soup to start. It was hot in temperature and a nice bit of heat in flavor. My main was the spicy shrimp and peanuts. This was a dish piled high with - you guessed it - shrimp and peanuts! The "spicy" was from the several red chili peppers scattered on top. I like spicy, but I can't actually eat the peppers straight! There were some chili flakes in the sauce but not many, so in the end I didn't find the dish very spicy. However, it was very tasty and very very filling (I managed to finish it!). Couldn't beat it for $14.50 plus tax and tip. read more

Best Chinese food in NYC I had hands down. Along with best service. Food was delicious, also if the servers recommend something, do try it out. I went twice in my 5 day trip to NYC. I tried sautéed green beans (delicious!!!) sautéed asparagus with carrots, bean curd family style, schzewan style tofu, veggie dumplings in spicy peanut sauce and snap pea leaves (now this dish is a must try, it's simple and yet delicious or I just love my greens more than anything). Lunch special comes with wonton soup which was again delicious. My husband tried their king pao chicken which he said was good. The service is beyond great, all the 'aunties' are very nice and feed you with love like an Asian mom. The ambiance is cozy. I highly recommend this place o if you are in this area. read more

My good friend Jasmine introduced me to New Cottage and told me it was her favorite Chinese Restaurant. I know that she has always given really good recommendations and I trust her judgment so I went with her for lunch. Ever since then, I went with her whenever we were both available and in the mood. Most recently, I came with all of my girlfriends and we ordered a lot of food for the table to share. They were really great about one of my friends bringing her service dog into the restaurant and I know that can be hard sometimes. The food was really good and I enjoyed my meal. They know my friend at the restaurant because she's a frequent customer and she always goes with her mom. I'm surprised that I don't come in to order more often too because the food and the service is so good. read more

This was my first time at a Chinese restaurant on the upper west side. New Cottage is a tiny level up from your usual Chinese take out restaurant. It wasn't bad and it wasn't really good either. The eggplant with garlic sauce was literally just eggplant, no scallions or tasty garnish..just plain ole eggplant and garlic sauce that didn't have that garlic taste. The spicy diced chicken wasn't spicy, it was rather just very salty as if the chicken was soaked in salt overnight! It's okay but I wouldn't go back. Very simple, basic meals. It was busy for a Thursday lunch period. It's mediocre Chinese food with tables, a wait staff and tables with white tablecloth pleasing for the upper west side I suppose. read more

It's good Chinese take in or out, that's overpriced on Broadway & 78th St. in NYC. Won't return though.

Maybe I'm just totally out of touch with prices. Lunch special was 12.95, so with tax it was $14.10. Portion was the expected small container of the lunch, plus ride and a soup. I get it's a better deal than dinner pricing but it did feel pricey. read more

This place may not be run by a world-famous chef or boast Michelin stars, but it has something far more rare--soul, respect, and genuine care. We sat down for lunch and placed our order, but soon realized that if we waited for the food, we would miss an appointment. When we asked the waiter if we could come back in a few hours to pick it up, she happily agreed. Later in the afternoon when we returned, not only did they heat up our food, but they even prepared a fresh entrée and treated us with the kind of warmth and generosity you'd expect from family. For a moment, it truly felt like home. I wish more restaurants showed this same love, compassion, and care. The food here is exceptional. Since we're not big meat eaters, we mostly tried the vegetarian entrées, and they were all excellent. They also make thoughtful recommendations, often suggesting the vegetable of the day, which always turns out to be a great choice. read more

I'm coming out of review retirement just to give a shout-out to this restaurant. I've lived in this neighborhood since long before this restaurant, and way-back-when there were so many competing Chinese restaurants, with a few of the great ones come & gone. So, compared with 100's of lunch take-outs (in the UWS and around the city) over years, plus eating-in and take-out in this neighborhood... Trying this place for the 1st time, surprisingly, and equal surprisingly, very impressed. I got some basic lifelong favorites, like BBQ ribs and General Tso chicken, plus an appetizer of pork dumplings in spicy peanut sauce, as my first sampler, Basics, though I see some more exotic specialties too. The General Tso's was spot-on, hot, tasty, slight zing, couldn't ask for more. Same with the ribs, the classic taste I've loved since childhood. Ditto, the dumplings and divine, perfect peanut/sesame sauce. That's all I can say I've tried here so far, but "I'll be back".... As an aside, this was delivered/take-out, and it came (a few blocks away) quickly, hot, and with the chopsticks and brown rice I'd requested, plus a few small condiment sides. "Approximately perfect." Only down side: prices up since the last take-out menu (significantly), but then that's everywhere, in New York, Florida too, grocery store too. But "you get what you pay for", and this was worth it, for a treat. read more

We ordered the following for a dinner for 2: - 2 Egg Rolls ($6.00+) - Large Wonton Soup ($6.50+) - Shrimp Lo Mein ($12.00+) - General Tso Chicken ($16.00+) We enjoyed everything we ordered, especially the Wonton Soup. Tonight's food was beyond inedible. SOOO MUCH CORN STARCH/SUGAR!! Probably defrosted in the microwave. Never again. Lots of light and air set the scene for expectation of a good meal, but it was unexpected to also find ourselves next to people who had left the area decades before but always returned when in NYC and took food home to savor, The food was fresh and excellent. Modifications to include or exclude ingredients were cheerfully welcomed. The portions were reasonable in size, The service was adroit and helpful with suggestions of dishes in season. Szechuan lovers unite! This spot on the UWS is for us. I came in on a sleepy lunch hour on the weekend. Sadly missed the lunch specials, but got great service as the only one in. Finally enough rice for my order!! I got the Szechuan beef dish and jasmine tea. Perfect amount of heat but they of course had the GOOD chili oil if you needed. Food was great, portions perfect and as it filled up a great ambiance and dining experience. This neighborhood is so lucky to have this spot as a dine and local takeout. read more

If I said to you that I paid four dollars for an egg roll out of a $45 check and the best tasting food on my bill was the egg-roll!! this has got to be the worst Chinese food that I've ever had for the price that I paid for it is absolutely disgusting. Excellent Szechuan cuisine prepared by professional staff. This restaurant is the revival of the previous cottage restaurant on Amsterdam Avenue. They are now in their second year at this new location, and the restaurant is very busy every day. All of the dishes are very well prepared and authentic.
