I've come to the conclusion that there's not much difference in the takeout places on the upper eastside. There are three within a couple of blocks of my apartment, all meriting about 3.5 stars. Eggplant in garlic sauce from Dragon 88 was okay. I compare it to the same dish I order in a dim sum shop in Berwyn, PA. This falls short. The eggplant is well cooked, but the sauce could be improved upon. When I order wonton soup in Chinatown, dumplings are generally delicate and nicely filled. The wontons in takeout places are thick, doughy, virtually tasteless. Broth could always be more flavorful. (I think of the wonton soup from my youth with slivers of pork, greens, sometimes mushrooms and water chestnuts.) I'll add that even mediocre Chinese takeouts here are infinitely better than what I left behind in North Fort Myers, FL. So while I see room for improvement, I'm certainly not complaining! read more

I gotta give a shout out to Dragon 88. Your local American Chinese take out/delivery doesn't fail. A work lunch favorite of mine. The noodle soups are delicious, flavorful broth, loaded with vegetables and protein of your choice. Lunch combos are wallet friendly. My go to is the chicken with mixed vegetables and vegetable fried rice, tasty and satisfying. Decent portions, fair pricing. read more

My husband and I wanted fast Chinese takeout in the UES. Service was fast and we went in person (couple dollars cheaper to order in person vs ordering pickup on web). For the amount of food we got for two people, we had left overs for the next day. Orange chicken and beef lo mein were well seasoned (wish the orange chicken was crispier though), fried rice was flavorful, and egg drop soup had plenty of egg in it which was nice (needed a little salt but I didn't mind it). We also ordered the egg rolls (not pictured) and they were super crunchy which is what you want with egg rolls. These were the only items we tried, can't speak for the other options on their menu. For the amount of food we got and relatively fast service I think it's a solid spot and does the job for fast takeout. read more

Came here to get your typical American Chinese takeout. I found the orange chicken a fantastic deal for the price and it was honestly pretty good for what it is! The egg drop soup was fine but was lacking some salt, added some of my own and did the spot! The egg foo young was not for me I just wasn't a fan. No frills, good food. Service is polite. I usually order cold sesame noodles and steamed shrimp dumplings. Occasionally vegetable lo mein. My husband usually gets chicken with broccoli. Everything is fresh and prepared well. The restaurant is clean, but small. One of our go-to Chinese takeout restaurants. read more

Dragon 88 is a stellar Chinese food spot. The 9.25 lunch special can't be beat. I got a beef lo mein which came on a bed of fried rice which was incredible. Staff is friendly and food is served quickly. What else can you ask for? read more

The 1st Avenue Chinese take-out kitchen that had been a neighborhood fixture since forever closed recently, but Dragon 88 opened directly across the Avenue. Actually the place modernized itself from lots of dreary-looking basement plywood paneling into something very state of the art, clean and contemporary and brightly lit, featuring hi-tech video ordering kiosks. Figuring I'd give it a try, I ordered Orange Chicken from the kiosk, and waited...and waited...and waited for my food to be prepared. I finally asked the woman behind the counter how it was doing - and evidently their new, high-tech computerized ordering system somehow lost my order. I told them to deliver it instead, and when it finally arrived...it was utterly tasteless & devoid of any flavor; I might as well been eating some sort of inert protein matter. (If there was any sauce or flavoring it might've been hidden in the very bottom of container but I didn't feel like digging for it.) I returned to the restaurant the next day and gave the order back. I have to say they had plenty of seemingly happy customers while I was waiting for my food to never be ready, so perhaps I was just an unlucky customer, maybe there were still bugs in their video ordering system...but that doesn't explain why there was no flavor to the dish whatsoever. I was happy to see that a new Chinese restaurant opened up in the neighborhood. I ordered steamed vegetable dumplings, wonton soup and American Buddhist Delight. The wontons were large, heavy and chewy. The dumplings were dry doughy so hard to savor the filling. I wasn' t offered a choice of sauce or fresh garlic with my vegetarian dish and I forgot to ask. Dragon 88 opened fairly recently. During my first few visits, I had a good experience. The sweet and sour chicken with pork fried rice is very delicious. In addition to the good food, the female cashier is kinda cute. The food is a bit pricey ($15). Given the location, that is to be expected. During my last visit, I ordered the usual. The female cashier was outside talking on the phone (I guess it was her break). A male cashier took my order. After paying him, I noticed a guy in the food prep area move a trash bin with his bare hands. Then, WITHOUT WASHING HIS HANDS OR PUTTING ON GLOVES, he grabbed someone's order and brought it to the front so the delivery man could pick it up. I was in disbelief. The man headed back to the food prep area. He was about to grab a pair of tongs to put the dumplings in the fryer when I asked the cashier to tell him to wash his hands. Rather than fulfill a simple request, the cashier said that his hands are clean and that he'll prepare my order instead. Without washing his hands or putting on gloves, the cashier prepared my order. In order to avoid drama, I didn't ask for a refund. Instead, I left, went to the nearest trash can, and threw it away. The only thing worse than wasting money is wasting food, especially in a city with a large homeless population. With that said, I wasn't going to risk spending an entire night shitting because I ate contaminated food (that has happened to me in the past). Because these two jackasses were too lazy to spend 30 seconds washing their hands, they lost a customer. read more

I noticed a new Chinese food option has opened in the space formerly occupied by New Sunny East 88. So I thought I'd try a lunch special. For my first order, i requested Chicken w/String Beans and chose Egg Drop soup as my free side (wonton soup or egg drop appear to be the only free side options). The space has been spruced up and is now brighter and more visually appealing. Verdict: I am very satisfied. Portion was very ample, pleasantly tasteful and at $9.25 + tax, quite affordable for the neighborhood. My favorite lunch option from New Sunny East 88, Chicken w/Eggplant, is not on the lunch menu here. Oh well. Note that side sauces need to be requested. My order included soy sauce and duck sauce (one packet of each) but I had to request hot sauce and mustard. read more

Ordered takeout in store. Friendly and fast with all the standard fare. Got a wonton soup and a noodle dish with pork. The meat and noodles were excellent, but the wontons left a lot to be desired.
