I love their lunch special. It's so cheap for being in the middle of Manhattan. You can get a whole plate of food for under $11. they take cash card and tap which is really convenient considering that it's by Hunter College. The most consistent solid Chinese take out spot on the UES, I've been going here for years. If you don't want the usual upscale stuff in the area and have an itch for an old school hole in the wall this is your place. The general Tao and fried rice combo with soda is my go-to. The staff are really friendly. The tables are always clean and the place is always packed with hardworking people in the area or hungry longtime locals that will strike up a conversation. This place reminds me of the Chinese takeout places from childhood. My husband loves this type of nostalgic Chinese food so we try to order from here at least every time we're in the neighborhood. Lunch specials are extremely well priced esp for UES, food is good, well portioned and served quickly (about 10 mins after a phone order is placed). Up until now, there had been one lamentable vacuum: cheap Chinese takeout. Yes, there are excellent Chinese restaurants to cater to your Szechuan or dim sum cravings. That's great; I love a Sichuan dry pot. But sometimes, I want a meal under $15 bucks that comes with a fortune cookie. What about those nights? There are times when all you want in the world is to cuddle up on your couch with a carton of sesame chicken. For those nights, Shanghai has everything you are looking for and then some, at a reasonable price. Within 10 minutes of calling in my order, my Mongolian Beef and pork fried rice were steaming up my takeout bag. And yes, they were delicious, and yes, I had leftovers. My goodness. I've had this place on my to-do list for almost a decade. Here's the deal, this is legit traditional Americanized greasy-spoon Chinese. There is no online ordering, and I'm unsure if they accept cards (please use cash to keep these places open!!) What you have instead is a very clean small dining room with all of the nostalgic old school American Chinese restaurant. And a woman in front who takes your order faster than you can make it - capped off with the list art of using a speaker line to send the order back. I know it's hard to see prices this high for what's a native New Yorker's struggle staple dinner. I'll give you my word it's worth it. The combo platters are still very reasonable. Service was super quick, you got a few minutes for candy crush max. Everything was well packaged. For the food, I got cold noodles (sweet peanut butter), crab Rangoon (amazing red sauce and fresh fried), kung pao, and general tso. Definitely classically sweet sauces but packed a spicy punch. We visit this place every few months to get take-out - not forgetting that this was one of the places that kept their doors open during the pandemic to feed locals and hospital workers. Order from here and expect a container full of freshly cooked, piping hot food that hits the spot when you are hungry after an 8-12 hour shift. Ordered chicken broccoli was better this time around (under chef specials) as we had requested garlic sauce over the brown (oyster) sauce. Shrimp eggplant was okay, eggplant was a tad undercooked. For 8 bucks you get a ton of food. While this is still Chinese takeout food, the quality is as good as you could ask for. I usually get the extra spicy general Tao chicken. It's never spicy but again, this is takeout so they cater to a more sweet spice for Americans. Beef chow fun is amazing, the green pepper beef is good, and the egg rolls are hefty. Looking for some classic Americanized Chinese food? This is your spot! I've tried numerous places on the UES and some have a weird after taste, some just had to be thrown out and some were just chewy and gross. I am SO happy I've finally found my go-to Chinese food takeout place and it's only two blocks from my apartment! Everything is reasonably priced, tastes great and they have a huge variety of dishes. We got sesame chicken, Chinese eggplant with chicken and two egg rolls. Wow, had never had the eggplant dish before but it was very good. Everything was still hot by the time we got it home and our egg rolls were nice and crispy. I don't think they do online ordering which I LOVE! Still have to call and order for delivery or pick up, just your classic old school take out joint. Can't wait to order again soon! read more

I have been eating take out from here for years. I never eat in the restaurant - clean but not fancy - paper plates and trays. The food is consistently good, not overpriced and they don't screw up your orders. That alone makes them the best deal around. It would be nice if they clearly said which menu items are vegetarian or vegan. They have plenty of options in that regard. Too bad they don't make small sizes for the vegetable dishes like they do for the others outside of the lunch special. Too bad their soups are not vegetarian. B The lunch special is a steal. The place is busy during lunch time, but they are quick. Once you order they will give you a number and call it out when your food is ready. There are two tables, but it's best to take it to go.
