I love their lunch special. It's so cheap for being in the middle of Manhattan. You can get a whole plate of food for under $11. they take cash card and tap which is really convenient considering that it's by Hunter College. You can call the number that's linked to their address and they're very friendly. The seating area isn't that big but it definitely has a couple of option. read more

Total saving grace to have a reliable Chinese takeout in the city blocks from where I was going. Tried two combos and soups. All fresh and made quickly. Happy to be here. Was unsure until I read Jareds review - then went right in. They made me cashew chicken not on the lunch menu- very accommodating and cool. read more

Good basic Chinese. We got takeout, which I suspect most people do. Tiny space not really inviting for dining in.

$10.88 for a nice bowl of chicken and broccoli and rice. Easy and simple. Good portion. I'm pleased! Nothing spicy or any real flavor to it, but gets the job done. read more

The most consistent solid Chinese take out spot on the UES, I've been going here for years. If you don't want the usual upscale stuff in the area and have an itch for an old school hole in the wall this is your place. The general Tao and fried rice combo with soda is my go-to. The staff are really friendly. The tables are always clean and the place is always packed with hardworking people in the area or hungry longtime locals that will strike up a conversation. This is a if you know you know spot even though it's next to the 2nd avenue train station. I think a lot of transplants skip it lmaoooo read more

My husband and I got some general tso's chicken from here yesterday for dinner and it was the best one we have ever tried. It was so good that we came back today for lunch and got the same thing. read more

This place reminds me of the Chinese takeout places from childhood. My husband loves this type of nostalgic Chinese food so we try to order from here at least every time we're in the neighborhood. Lunch specials are extremely well priced esp for UES, food is good, well portioned and served quickly (about 10 mins after a phone order is placed). It's also clean and def a staple restaurant for the area. Go support it so that it continues to stay open! read more

Upper East Siders, rejoice. A tasty and affordable Chinese takeout is here. I love the UES. It's loaded with great restaurants. Up until now, there had been one lamentable vacuum: cheap Chinese takeout. Yes, there are excellent Chinese restaurants to cater to your Szechuan or dim sum cravings. That's great; I love a Sichuan dry pot. But sometimes, I want a meal under $15 bucks that comes with a fortune cookie. What about those nights? There are times when all you want in the world is to cuddle up on your couch with a carton of sesame chicken. For those nights, Shanghai has everything you are looking for and then some, at a reasonable price. Within 10 minutes of calling in my order, my Mongolian Beef and pork fried rice were steaming up my takeout bag. And yes, they were delicious, and yes, I had leftovers. Shanghai won my heart and earned its place at the top of my takeout list. It deserves to be yours too. read more

Currently still waiting on my order and just had a bad experience with the lady up front. Was extremely rude and unfortunately I believe it had something to do with race. I don't even know how the food tastes yet but the service was not great! Definitely not coming back here. read more

My goodness. I've had this place on my to-do list for almost a decade. Here's the deal, this is legit traditional Americanized greasy-spoon Chinese. There is no online ordering, and I'm unsure if they accept cards (please use cash to keep these places open!!) What you have instead is a very clean small dining room with all of the nostalgic old school American Chinese restaurant. And a woman in front who takes your order faster than you can make it - capped off with the list art of using a speaker line to send the order back. I know it's hard to see prices this high for what's a native New Yorker's struggle staple dinner. I'll give you my word it's worth it. The combo platters are still very reasonable. Service was super quick, you got a few minutes for candy crush max. Everything was well packaged. For the food, I got cold noodles (sweet peanut butter), crab Rangoon (amazing red sauce and fresh fried), kung pao, and general tso. Definitely classically sweet sauces but packed a spicy punch. I'll be back as a regular for sure! read more

Shanghai Chinese Restaurant, located on Second Avenue near 71st St, runs a hopping business, yet does not have a website. We visit this place every few months to get take-out - not forgetting that this was one of the places that kept their doors open during the pandemic to feed locals and hospital workers. Order from here and expect a container full of freshly cooked, piping hot food that hits the spot when you are hungry after an 8-12 hour shift. Attaching photos of the Chicken Ho Fun (wide noodles) and Roast Pork with Mixed Vegetables that we recently ordered. Unsure about the future of this place as adjacent businesses such as Fei's laundry, Two Wheels restaurant and Windsor Flowers have been shuttered to make room for new development. Wishing this neighborhood fixture the best! read more

Typical solid take out place. Not too expensive and food is exactly what you'd expect.

I just discovered this gem here in the UES. I was craving Orange Chicken and man did this place deliver on everything! I paid $13.89 for my food. The chicken was crunchy, tangy, and with the perfect amount of heat! Definitely coming back to try their other menu options! read more

After a terrible dining experience just a block away that cost a pretty penny and left us starving, Shanghai was our saving grace. It's a no-frills, value Chinese take-out type joint. Fair prices, large portions. Nothing fancy, let's be honest, but it executes on what it promises. The staff is so nice, so please be patient since they're not native English speakers. We came on a rainy night just as they were about to close, and they were accommodating + helpful with their extensive menu. read more

Thought I'd give this another try... typical Chinese take out. Ordered chicken broccoli was better this time around (under chef specials) as we had requested garlic sauce over the brown (oyster) sauce. Shrimp eggplant was okay, eggplant was a tad undercooked. Portions were decent and it was nice that it came with a side of white rice. However the wontons in the soup were inedible (not sure what kind of meat was inside). Sadly won't consider going back... read more

Quick recap: if you're in the upper east/ Lenox hill area, this is your best quick Chinese takeout spot. Reliably tasty, fast, and a great value. I usually get the lunch specials on busy days. For 8 bucks you get a ton of food. While this is still Chinese takeout food, the quality is as good as you could ask for. I usually get the extra spicy general Tao chicken. It's never spicy but again, this is takeout so they cater to a more sweet spice for Americans. Beef chow fun is amazing, the green pepper beef is good, and the egg rolls are hefty. Place is small but clean and the people working are fast and friendly. Highly recommend. read more

Looking for some classic Americanized Chinese food? This is your spot! I've tried numerous places on the UES and some have a weird after taste, some just had to be thrown out and some were just chewy and gross. I am SO happy I've finally found my go-to Chinese food takeout place and it's only two blocks from my apartment! Everything is reasonably priced, tastes great and they have a huge variety of dishes. We got sesame chicken, Chinese eggplant with chicken and two egg rolls. Wow, had never had the eggplant dish before but it was very good. Everything was still hot by the time we got it home and our egg rolls were nice and crispy. I don't think they do online ordering which I LOVE! Still have to call and order for delivery or pick up, just your classic old school take out joint. Can't wait to order again soon! read more

I LOVE SHANGHAI! Fast delivery, yummy food, and great service. Best local spot in the UES

I have been eating take out from here for years. I never eat in the restaurant - clean but not fancy - paper plates and trays. The food is consistently good, not overpriced and they don't screw up your orders. That alone makes them the best deal around. It would be nice if they clearly said which menu items are vegetarian or vegan. They have plenty of options in that regard. Too bad they don't make small sizes for the vegetable dishes like they do for the others outside of the lunch special. Too bad their soups are not vegetarian. B The lunch special is a steal. My favorites are the dumplings, lo mein, and all the tofu dishes. read more

Decent lunch option in the area if you are craving Americanized Chinese food. Lunch specials are $8 including tax. No free soda or soup though. The place is busy during lunch time, but they are quick. Once you order they will give you a number and call it out when your food is ready. There are two tables, but it's best to take it to go. I had the general Tso's chicken which was pretty good but not as crispy as I would like it to be. read more

Missing your local reliable hometown Chinese restaurant? Well this is your NYC version of that. This spot is conveniently located by the Q so it was an easy pickup on the way home but also made for easy and fast delivery when I was already home. I'm a fan of their lo mein and sesame chicken, I even think it's better than mine back home. I highly recommend and will always keep this as my go to. read more

Good cheap eats Chinese food. No frills and nice service. Got general tso chicken lunch special.

I had ordered from their dimsum menu. They used cheap ingredients and barely any flavor. I had their shumai which came in 3. Just stuffed with sticky rice and some measly carrots and mushroom and salt for flavoring. Their spinach buns were from the frozen section in grocery stores. Their cruller is doughy...not what i have in mind. Service is quick. read more

Just not good. I don't know why this place has 4 stars. No flavor pork fried rice and terrible boneless spare ribs

I always like to have Chinese takeout here but today sesame chicken is so terrible. I didn't have it for years. And today, all I could taste was the soggy batter. There's barely any chicken meat. I'm so disappointed. I had to throw away my lunch. I should have stuck with chicken with broccoli in garlic sauce. It's so good. read more
