The fish is so fresh! Visited this evening for sushi dinner with the kids and a few friends. We ordered a few rolls and the sushi dinner which came with 9 pieces of nigiri and a salmon roll plus a Jamison soup or salad. The prices are great and the staff are very friendly! The Early Bird Dinner Special is a great value at $17.95 and includes a cooked entree or sushi (including some special rolls) along with your choice of soup or salad as well as ice cream for dessert. Happy Hour drink specials are good on weekends ($6 for a lychee martini!). My toddler gobbled up the fried pork gyoza and I had to restrain myself from eating more than my share of crispy rice (not listed in the menu). The vegetable tempura was nice and airy but could have used more salt, while the miso soup was soothing and pleasantly filling. The specialty rolls were balanced, nuanced and altogether divine. My family and I have been going to Isohama for the last decade. Service was always phenomenal and the sushi fresh. After the new ownership service has been in decline but we still come back. Not after Thursday night. I have noticed german roaches in the restaurant before, and was assured by the new owner that it was going to be taken care of by an exterminator. My mother had the unfortunate experience of having a roach drop onto her head from the ceiling during dinner. We were assured our drinks would be on the house (when we truly should have gotten our meal free as it was a health hazard) but they instead gave us a free order of edamame. The fish was not fresh. Because I have been coming here for so long I have been hesitant not to return. Not after after seeing cockroach crawl through my mothers hair. There are plenty of other sushi restaurants in the neighborhood where you do not have to worry about vermin and bad behavior. read more

Isohama is a great UES sushi spot. Every time I eat there, I find something new on the menu to love. From the miso soup to the different rolls they offer, everything is well done and carefully crafted by the sushi chefs. Depending on the time of day, the service might be a bit slow. The staff are very attentive, however, and the wait is worth it for the quality of sushi you get. I sat at the sushi bar last time I was there - talked with a woman who had been eating there for 30 years and told us she has never been disappointed. For appetizers, my favorites are the steamed Shumai, Veggie Spring Rolls, and Miso soup. The rolls which stand out to me are the rainbow roll, spicy triangle (so yummy), and volcano roll. They also do the classics very well (philadelphia and california) but I recommend being adventurous with the menu - it has always paid off for me! If there was a way to give this establishments less than one star I would. My boyfriend and I had the unfortunate experience of ordering from Isohama via uber eats. First of all, we noticed the food came a lot quicker than we had expected. Once it arrived, we anticipated a delicious exceptional japanese dinner, especially since it got a glowing review from one of my friends who told me a couple months ago that I had to try this spot. So I told my boyfriend about this review and since he loves japanese food he was down. Oh boy, what a mistake that was. First off, I ordered sushi rolls and gyoza, and he ordered the fried shrimp tempura. his order came with white rice and miso soup. I had miso soup as well. The only items that we ordered that was relatively prepared well was the miso soup and the gyoza. The sushi rolls were okay, not good or necessarily bad, but I never got to finish it. More on that later. Anyway, by the middle of the night, my boyfriend started having night sweats. Then by the morning he complained of stomach pain. About an hour later he was vomiting profusely and could not keep any food or drinks down. At this point we realize it was the food. Now again, the food I had ordered had been prepared alright but his shrimp tempura was what he believes was not done well. He said it had tasted funny, not like he was used to tasting it. Thankfully I didn't have enough of an appetite to finish my sushi rolls because if I had who knows how I'd be feeling the next day. After we found out he had food poisoning I threw out the leftover sushi rolls because if we can't trust this establishment to cook shrimp tempura well, how can we trust them with raw sushi rolls? Next time anyone is looking for an establishment on the UES to try, you should go ANYWHERE ELSE. Because shrimp and sushi with a side of food poisoning? No thank you. read more

Visited my niece at school at Mount Sinai and decided on Sushi. Walked to this destination for an early dinner. Isohama has a full menu from Sushi to main entrees at reasonable prices. I started with a $9 Mango Martini which was quite delicious. We enjoyed Miso soup and 4 sushi rolls: 2 Veggie, 1 Mango and 1 spicy tuna. The service was very good as was the surroundings. I went to Isohama a couple of times and although it's not my favorite sushi place it is good. Maybe I'm not ordering the best things they offer. I think I would rate it 3.5 stars. This time I ordered takeout. I tried the California roll which has tobiko balls (fish roe) and also tried the sweet potato tempura roll. The sweet potato used was white in color and I found it to be harder in texture and not as pleasant to eat as a result. The California roll was pretty standard. In my opinion there's better sushi in the neighborhood but Isohama is a fine choice if I'm in the area and don't want to travel further for sushi. read more

Anybody notice that ownership has changed hands twice in the last few years ? It seems basically now just a take out place. No outside entrance was put up this winter; so constant blasts of cold air. Delivery people reeking of marijuana talking into their cells while waiting for their orders. The old music which was quiet and in the background- Coltrane and Ellington amazingly- is long gone. The music now is loud and horrible. Every song is reduced to a metronome drum beat. The owner likes it I hear. Speaking of whom the owner or managers are invisible except for Sunday and have no interaction with the customers. The original owner or her son was here every night. The staff which was amazingly consistent is now revolving. But they are polite. The last good chef left over the winter. At the bar there is a stench from the sink, which they seem to have fixed. One chef has a stuffed nose and he is constantly sucking in his snot. Disgusting. Customers rarely sit at the bar. I don't drink but they've lost their liquor license. To me the quality of the fish is still very good. I rarely order from the kitchen. But they've lost their mojo for sure. read more

We came here for a quick dinner and really enjoyed our experience. Food: We ordered the fried veggie gyoza and fried tempura for our appetizers. They were both delicious. The gyozas and tempura were crispy and the tempura batter was also very tasty. The dipping sauces for both could have used a little more salt. For dinner we ordered 3 rolls - sweet potato tempura roll, ume maki, and Phoenix roll. All three were tasted good. It was our first time trying plum sauce and for us it was too sour so I don't think we'll get the ume maki roll again but it still tasted good. The Phoenix roll was delicious! The tofu skin was cooked to perfection. And of course the potato tempura roll was nice and crispy, exactly how you'd want it to be. Drinks: The beers are great as always as they are great Asian beer choices. I got the pomegranate margarita and it was not good at all. I think the syrup was clearly very artificial and you could taste it. If I go back I'd probably order a beer or a glass of wine instead. Atmosphere: Inside the restaurant, the decor is really nice and upscale. It's great for a date spot. The outside dining area is not so great, more of a casual hangout. We sat on conference room chairs which I always thing is odd for a restaurant. Prices: The prices here are very reasonable especially considering NYC prices. My husband got a large beer (22oz) for only $7. I got a pomegranate margarita and it was only $9. And these are regular prices. They also have lower prices for lunch specials and "early hours." Consistently becoming one of my favorite sushi spots in Carnegie Hill. The spicy tuna and yellow tail and scallion rolls are delicious.

I came around 5:30pm on a Saturday and was greeted at the door with hospitality. I chose to sit inside but they did have outdoor seating available as well. They have a very big menu! I ended up choosing the chirashi dish which came with either a soup or salad. I chose the miso soup and that came right away before my main dish. The soup tasted fresh and had lots of tofu. The chirashi was delicious! They also offer many types of drinks as well. I'll certainly come back again to try the katsu and other menu items. The service was good but the food was way better before the pandemic. They are pricier than the other places but since my favorite place closed down I gave them another chance. So disappointing. Sashimi not fresh. It hasnt gone bad, but amazingly bland, which is a dead giveaway it isnt very fresh. The chirashi sushi is $21, a bit cheaper than some of the other japanese restaurants here. But contents are the usual 4-5 fishes (tuna, salmon, mackerel, amd a couple others i cant readily name) plus tamago (egg), imitatiom crab, and small fish roes... portion is small but resonable for its price, however the lack of freshness makes it very disappointing. We also ordered Zaru Soba (spelled zaro soba on their menu for some reason). Which came overly boiled and with the seasoning tasting more like soysauce mixed with water than the standard tsuyu that should come with it. Literally any store bought tsuyu would taste better than this soysauce water. The only thing made us happy was that they have a few selection of japanese beer and we found out we really like Kirin Light. Overall i didnt feel like it was a rip off, but its fairly close. If they charged $25+ for the chirashi I would have given 1 star instead of 2 for sure read more

My wife and I have come here a few times now and have enjoyed it every time. The sushi is great, but we were also surprised at the variety of other traditional Japanese favorites on the menu--for example, a bowl of Zaru Soba (cold buckwheat noodles served in a basket with dipping sauce on the side) really hit the spot as an appetizer on a hot summer day. Add to that their creative roll specials, friendly staff, and a great sake/cocktail selection and you're in for a great night. 5 stars for a 5 star establishment!!! I've been visiting this lovely restaurant since 2016 and can confidently say this is one of my favorite sushi spots in NYC. Most reviews below mention their liking towards the menu and the quality. I can attest to both as I've tried numerous dishes (both for dine in and take out) and have always tasted the freshness in their food. This is especially true with foods where quality can be the differentiator. Try the uni, limited toro rolls or the ikura (picture attached) to taste it yourself! I've been really impressed with their service during COVID as they continue to deliver exceptional food with exceptional service. The staff tends to patrons promptly, offering a warm attitude and a clean atmosphere (they immediately scrub tables + super thorough). They opened up a fantastic outdoor seating area with heaters, sliding doors, and sliding windows, making the dining experience a tad bit more comfortable. Easily the best neighborhood joint UES can ask for. I've moved quite far from the area but nothing can stop me from coming back :) read more
