Some coworkers took me to New China, and it was surprisingly good as it is hidden in a strip shopping center and didn't look like much from the outside. My lemon chicken was good and the others like their lunch specials too. It looked like they have all the standards you would expect. New China is hit and miss. Sometimes the food is amazing, and sometimes it's 'eh'. Same with the customer service. I've had annoyed looking waiters who never smiled when I had my kids with me, and I've had very friendly ones too. They do make really yummy walnut honey chicken though! Let me just say that this place is a hole in the wall, but a CLEAN hole in the wall. Family was driving down from WA to CA and was craving Chinese food. Of course, we quickly turned to yelp because we never thought there a great Chinese restaurant would be possible in Redding, CA. When we first got there, the place looked not very trust worthy. Everything changed when we went inside. The staff was very courteous and this place was by far the cleanest Chinese restaurant I have ever been to. Let me say that if you want to know whether the restaurant's kitchen is clean or not, you should check out their bathroom. If the bathroom is nasty, the kitchen I'm sure is more unsanitary even though the seating area might look nice. New China had a spotless bathroom and didn't smell. Nor was there a fragrance that tried to mask any smell. We got there around 6pm and it seems a bit empty. But we noticed that people kept coming in and out for take out. Then around 7pm, the restaurant was packed. It's a good sign if the restaurant is packed. We ordered... Sizzling Rice Soup - 5 stars ++ This soup was the bomb diggety. The rice crackles when he pours the soup and it is such a delicious appetizer to start off a great Chinese meal. One order of the soup gave out 4-5 small bowls of soup. it's MUST try. Shrimp Fried Rice - 5+ stars!!! ++This is DEFINITELY the best fried rice that has ever graced my tastebuds in my whole entire life! The rice is sooo juicy, moist, plump. The shrimps are huge not like those janky dried stuff you would find at a cheap chinese food place. Everything about the fried rice was soooooo great. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this dish. I would order this for every meal if I lived here. Better than any fried rice I ever had in SF or Los Angeles. TRUE STORY. People who live here are lucky. Waterchestnut Snowpeas - 5 stars ++WOW! Party in my mouth! Such a perfect veggie dish to go along with our meal. The dish is so fresh. There's not too many waterchestnuts but perfectly balanced amount of both snowpeas and the chestnuts. I tried to order this dish in LA and it was soooo nasty. New China's food keeps appearing in my dreams... Sesame Chicken - 3 stars ++This is by far my least favorite dish. So we were driving through this area (I live in Sac) and thought I'd find some good Chinese food trusting my fellow yelpers, but they got this one wrong. This was some of the most terrible Chinese food I've had. My boyfriend and I even had stomach aches after we left. The chicken tasted awful, like it had been reheated, it was hard to digest. We ordered the cashew chicken and prawns with mixed vegetables, but left most of the food on the plate. We even mentioned our dissatisfaction to our waiter, but he didn't seem too concerned about it. Sadly I was expecting more from New China based on the Yelp reviews... so, where do I start? 1) This is more of a personal preference, but I enjoy egg drop soup as the soup that accompanies my [Chinese] meal. However the standard soup here is Hot & Sour soup - I'm not a fan. 2) The egg roll that comes with the lunch special, was very greasy and the filling was completely flavorless. 3) The fried rice was hard and almost crunchy, as I'm pretty sure the rice had not been reheated properly/long enough... I will say the flavor itself wasn't bad. 4) The chow mein was the most disappointing. All it was, was thick noodles with barely any chicken or veggies, and it left a lot to be desired flavor-wise. 5) The sweet and sour chicken I ordered was solidly decent, very middle-of-the-road. No complaints here. I will not be going out of my way to return to this establishment in the future. I am really not understanding the high reviews of this place. Admittedly, Chinese food isn't normally my thing - I prefer the more flavorful Thai, Laotian, or Korean. So maybe I am not the best person to review a Chinese food place, but honestly it was really boring and mediocre food. I ordered the Mongolian beef. It was OK. Decent flavors, though not spicy at all like the menu claimed. The meat was pretty chewy IMO. Hubby ordered the sesame chicken. That was really the only good thing on the table. The dinners come with chow mein and fried rice. The mein was decent- fat wheat noodles. Fried rice was boring. Kids had pu pu platter and the only decent thing on that was the ribs. The rest was pretty forgettable. The place is small, family-owned, so I feel sad to dis it when I am sure it's their livelihood. The service was fast and the servers kind and attentive. read more

The fiancee and I stopped by here last Sunday around 5 pm for a very late lunch / early dinner after an afternoon of hiking Mount Shasta. She really wanted Chinese food and this place seemed to be highly rated. I looked through the photos of the food and some of the previous reviews and was fairly skeptical. As a rule, I tend to avoid eating Chinese food outside of the San Francisco Bay Area because it's almost guaranteed that the food will end up tasting like Panda Express. Thankfully, this place turned out to be at least a slight notch above Panda Express quality. The fiancee ordered the Wonton Soup and the House Special Fried Rice and I ordered the Sizzling Beef. As expected, the food can best be characterized as your run-of-the-mill bizarrely Americanized version of Chinese food. The food lacks any nuance or depth of flavor you want out of real Chinese food. The Sizzling Beef was drowning in sauce (a big NO NO) and all the food was pretty salty. What infuriated me the most was the wait for the food. This is a relatively small restaurant - maybe 10 to 15 tables total. There are a lot of call in To Go orders, but still, we waited for over 35 minutes for our 3 dishes of food. Absolutely unacceptable. The restaurant obviously needs to hire more staff and it clearly has the means to do so. It was early on Sunday for dinner and already the restaurant was mostly full with a constant barrage of call in orders. If I had to, I might be able to force myself to come here again, but definitely not by choice. Places like New China are further proof in my mind that it is not possible to find authentic Chinese food in places where there is no substantial Chinese population. You might wonder how I still manage to give this place 3 stars. There are clearly some pros. It's obviously very popular with the locals, so I must be in the minority here with my less-than-satisfactory review. In addition, the food is reasonably okay. Not good or spectacular, but definitely better than some Chinese fast food chains. Finally, the prices are reasonable and won't break your budget: we had a decent meal for about $30. read more

Walking in, the place feels like the usual hole-in-the-wall kind of place. I always look to see if the local Chinese population also eats there - and they do. Con: food sometimes seems a bit oily.... The menu items I've tried have been great. LOVE the Mu Shu Chicken. The prices are fabulous and a great value. One order of Mu Shu is dinner and leftovers. This use to be our favorite Chinese restaurant 3 years ago. We moved and found our new favorite ( Peacock) We went to New China the other day for lunch because we had business in that area. I was very disappointed. It has changed so much. It is still good but we have found a better place ( Peacock). The waiter who waited on us seemed bored with his job and us. This place has been around for a while but I never get the chance to come since it's not super close to my house so I was excited to give it a try tonight. I ordered the cashew chicken combo plate. It was a TON of food! I was eating solo as my fireman husband got called into work and I ended up taking a bunch of food home. The combo plate comes with soup, a large egg roll and then your plate full of noodles, rice and whatever dish you chose. It's good food, not spectacular, but good. Great value for what you get. I had lunch here with my mom, we Ordered General Tso's Prawns, the waiter brings us General Tso's Chicken. We politely pointed out the mistake, and the waiter told us we had ordered two plates of General Tso's--chicken and shrimp--the shrimp wasn't ready yet. I pointed out that this was incorrect--we only ordered GT's shrimp. Then the waiter (an older gentleman who seemed to have difficulty understanding us) got angry and insisted we were wrong about what we ordered. He removed the chicken and slammed the plate into a dish bin. Then he brought us walnut shrimp, not at all what we ordered but we ate it just to avoid the drama and get out of there. The bill wasn't right and we ended up paying extra for sides we didn't order, not to mention the waiter never admitted to or apologized for his multiple mistakes, and was visibly annoyed with us for the remainder of our meal. This is the first time I've ever felt unwelcome in a restaurant. This is usually my go to place for Chinese food when I'm in the area, but the service we received has me seriously reconsidering ever returning to an otherwise good Chinese restaurant. read more

Came check out what the buzz was about... Not much of a buzz... The place: The place looks odd. I guess it it what it is. Nothing special... It's whatever... Food: Egg tofu soury soup... Meh... It's tolerable. General tso chicken overloaded with their sauce... Too much... It's pretty good but too much sauce it's overwhelming to eat. Fried rice taste so bland. Other places are way better. Mongolian beef that looks good but the meat tasted like pork. I asked the waiter if it's pork and started making fun off me in Chinese... Well the dish is good but I'm not sure what meat I'm eating. House special chow fun this is delicious. The shrimp in this dish is remarkable! The waiters: they're nice but wasn't able to handle questions... Like is this beef? Our chow fun was supposed to have beef and pork and I cannot find any difference in beef and pork... Laughed at my questions and kept making fun of me in Chinese.... Sad days! No Gai Lan and other items are missing off the menu. I got Bok choi and beef, sweet and sour pork, string brand with chicken, and wor wonton. Wor Wonton was salty, Everything else was okay.
