Food here has gone downhill over the last few years. They are nice but really not terribly good.

Really disappointed with the General Tso's chicken. There was barely any actual chicken in the pieces...it was mostly thick, deep-fried breading covered in sauce. I kept biting into pieces expecting chicken and getting almost nothing but fried batter. For the price of ordering through DoorDash, I expected a reasonable amount of actual meat, not a container full of breading. Definitely not what General Tso's chicken should be, and I wouldn't order this dish again. Sadly this has been my experience over the past year with this establishment. My fiancée and I stopped in for a early dinner. We truly enjoyed the service, everyone was very kind. We really loved the setting it was very calming. The food was delicious, we were huge fans of the chow mein. The portions are really big, you could honestly share one between two people! We got the dinner combinations which are really worth it! Visiting Redding this summer and stumbled upon this Chinese restaurant by our hotel. The service was amazing, all three ladies were kind and friendly. We ordered lunch special and they are delicious. My hubby ordered one set to go for dinner. The restaurant is clean and well decorated. The restrooms are clean. Parking is also convenient. Definitely try this place while in Redding. I usually order the Kung Pao Chicken and have it delivered, but I went into the restaurant and ate for this review. I like to buy 2 Kung Pao Chicken and then reheat them another day. Ordered a beer. The server was super cool. I ordered my food and I got my soup and I'm examining it. And it passed. Lol. The soup was good. Could of been a little hotter. But it was good. Eggroll was meh, not in an Eggroll wrapper. But most now days aren't. The foil chicken was ok. But the chicken was banggin. The pork fried rice was banggin. The beer, banggin, the server was awesome. She was on point. She asked if I needed anything else. I told her when my beer is at this level (hand low on the glass) bring me another. And she was on it. Will I be back? Yes!! We generally love House Chow Mein, however this variety had zero vegetables (no green onions, no regular onions, no celery, no caggage, not even any carrots). The shrimp in the chow mein was delightful, the beef a bit dry and tough, the chicken sweet and delicious...the sauce was a heavy brown sauce...passable. The "egg rolls" were 3"× .5" and actually were spring rolls. The outter layer crispy and over dark, the inner layer of dough rubbery. But the filling? Delicious. NO CHINESE MUSTARD was sent for the "egg rolls", fortunately I make my own from scratch anyway. All said and done, being Veterans (and thus as long as it's hot and not disgusting), we can and will eat anything. This filled a hole, but not worth the price. Chow Mein nearly $16; 4 tiny egg rolls, nearly $10. Again NO mustard With tip, tax and fees, supper was a splurge at $38...plus I gave the driver $10 cash on top of extra in the app as the food was quickly delivered and HOT. Authentic and great Chinese food. Made a stop in Redding on a road trip up to Oregon and I'm glad I did. I've stopped in Redding multiple times before and have tried other Chinese spots but this one takes the cake. I haven't had a home cooked meal from my family in quite a while & this place did just the thing with hitting the spot and providing comfort Chinese food. The food is fresh and flavorful -- my personal favorite being the broccoli beef and their fried rice. So, we called in a to go order of chicken chow fun and General's chicken. Prices weren't too bad, about average these days. We got the food back to my friends house and re-plated the food on real plates ... geeze who want's to eat outta stryofome clam shells food containers. The food was still super hot. So we were were craving for warm, comfort food after one of the many beautiful afternoon drizzles up here in the Redding area and found this spot. There's not a lot of Asian restaurants to choose in this area but it was adequate to satisfy our cravings for Chinese food! I got the bbq pork and substituted for snow peas and my hubby loved his General Tsao's chicken! The service was slow and almost non existent since they were busy and only had two waiters and one cashier. I had paid for my food and was waiting for it to go. No one told me it was ready so I waited an extra 30 more minutes than I should have so I was irritated by that but the food was good enough so I will forgive them. Came into town to rest up before arriving to Los Angeles. Checked in to our room and found this place on Yelp, they took our order and we picked it up within 15 mins, I will say they are only allowing takeout only, they do have a huge seating area and plenty of parking when they will allow sit down. Ordered Chow Fun Combination, Pork Fried Rice and BBQ Pork with veggies. The only disappointing factor was their Chow Fun Noodles, they tasted undercooked, other then that, the dishes tasted great. Place satisfied our late hunger and If I ever find myself in town, I know where to grab some chinese food. read more

My husband and I ordered out for a rare treat for ourselves. We selected Golden Star as we have several times before. Unfortunately, the food prepared for us was terrible this time! * The General Tao Chicken was bland and with little to no spice as it should be, the chicken was overcooked so it was tough to chew and there was no sauce to enjoy, it was all absorbed into the breading. * The Pork and Pan Fried Noodle dish was horrible. According to the Menu the Dish consists of "Pan Fried Noodles, Sliced Pork and Vegetables in a Brown Sauce" To my Dissapointment, the Pork, Veggies and Sauce were like a Soup! The 'Sauce was NOT a Sauce, but more of a Soup. The Pork was 'Waterlogged' because of it so it didn't have a good mouth feel and chew. The Baby Bok Choy was Slimy! It was feeling gross in my mouth, it was unpalatable Basically, When I put the dish together I had a Bowl of Pan Fried Noodles, the veggies in a Soup Base. Terrible! and all for about $75.00 The best thing was the Egg Rolls. Over the years we have noticed that Golden Star is pretty inconsistent with the food Taste, Texture and Temps. Wouldn't try again. Add some flavor to the broth and update the won tons might help. I like spicy. Mongolian beef was slim. Not much meat. Very mild. I couldn't tell if there was any spice, but again I like a lot of spice. Texture of the meat was good. Chow mien had some chicken. No flavor. Texture was ok. Fried rice was Dry. Back before Golden Star was in this space, Jade Garden was there. I don't know about you but I prefer Golden Star hands down. Their food is absolutely delicious. Large portion sizes, an egg roll (or those crab cream puff wanton) and soup with every combination plate. And it also comes with rice AND noodles, which a lot of places normally make you pick one. The food reminds me of New China over on Eureka Way which I also love but is sort of far out there. Servers are nice too. read more

Sweet & Sour Pork with choice of White rice, Fried Rice or Chicken Chow Mein. $10 and came with soup The attention to detail on the meal was better then most Chinese restaurants was pleasantly surprised they put the sweet & sour sauce separate so it stayed crispy and fresh tasting. Located on the East side of Redding but if you have to drive for good food and great ambiance, you do what you gotta do! This used to be Jade Gardens, I believe, but now, they have outdone themselves. Succulent sauces accompany almost every dish. Their rice and chow mein are hot and freshly cooked. If you like Kung Pao chicken or beef, you just stop what you are doing and get here now, order it, and be happy! I went out on a limb and ordered the Sizzling Seafood Iron Platter with prawns, scallops, and crab meat and I was not disappointed. They should def step up their game with regard to their wine selection as it's not top-notch but hey, you can still pair your dining selection with a Tsingtao beer and call it a great, well-rounded meal.
