I dig the food at this place, man. I almost always get it to go, and if I'd have written this review based on take-out, it'd have been four or five stars. But I took my lady-friend Maude here for Valentines Day, and it was a fucking abortion, man. First of all, the beer and wine selection is, like, from 1962 or something. And second, the service was surreal, like a cable network sketch comedy show's rendition of a Chinese Restaurant. You're probably, uh, uh, uh, *judging* me for taking Maude to a Chinese restaurant on Valentines Day, right? Fuck you, man. Neither of us likes Hallmark holidays, so we were avoiding all the other restaurants packed with people doing the VD thing. Also, we both had that nasty cold that's going around, and the hot and sour soup at New China is the shit when you've got a cold, man. That, and some fried prawns. I don't like fried food, man, but you know that horseradish mustard they serve with the fried prawns? Cleans your sinuses right out. And the Moo Shu pork Chinese burritos are righteous. The service started out fine, with a short wait for a table that they hustled to clear to get us seated. But then, man, it got weird. After ordering, we waited a long time for our food. Meanwhile, about a hundred to-go orders get picked up. Finally our food arrives, all at once -- usually you get your soup first. And the waiter hurriedly prepares the first two Moo Shu pork burritos with about one-tenth of the filling for each. You only get four of the Chinese tortilla things, so if my math is right, that left two tortillas, and eight-tenths of the Moo Shu pork filling. That was a fucking abomination. Then, about five minutes after we start eating, a waitress swings by and asks if she can take our plates. No. She then asks if she can box up the rest of our food. Uh, NO, man. She then goes to the next table and asks the six people there -- who had just received their orders -- if she can box up their food. A woman at that table is like, "We just started eating, dear." And then it happens again, and then again. Finally, we agree to having some of the food boxed up, and our check comes. This is actually cool: With your check and fortune cookies, New China gives each of you a dissected Mandarine orange, cupped in half of the peel, as a little after-dinner palate cleanser. Nice. Maude puts her credit card down and we open our fortune cookies, and I skewer a piece of orange and eat it. And then, as I reach to skewer another piece, a waiter swoops in and removes the plate with the two oranges. What the fuck, man? Maude hasn't even touched hers yet, and I've still got like seven-eighths of mine. This is literally one minute after the oranges were put on the table. It was like getting bum-rushed. I love this place, the food is excellent and the people who own and operate it are like family. The owner even put my other bag (which wasn't even part of the order for neighbors and myself) in a bag that would be easier to carry without being asked. These people make every person that walks in there feel like they are especially glad to see them and their food is excellent. I've had a lot of Chinese food at excellent hole in the wall places in San Francisco's Chinatown, and New China can keep up with them in variety and taste. I feel very fortunate that this place is 3 minutes from my home and near such a gorgeous view of Mt. Shasta, and other surrounding mountains with newer snow from last week too, to enjoy while driving to pick it up! The fortune in the fortune cookie was promising also :-) read more

This was my first time eating here, so maybe I caught them on an off day, but unfortunately our $50 take home order was a complete waste of money. The egg drop soup literally tasted like water. The vegetable chow mien was bland noodles with barely any vegetables. The sweet and sour chicken and kung pao beef had very little flavor. My husband and I have enjoyed eating at this restaurant since we moved to the area four years ago. We believe it has a different owner or manager because the service is no longer excellent and mediocre at best. The food is good, no longer excellent. Very disappointing to see these changes to what was a great place to eat. read more
