This place is really good. We got combo plates for dinner. Soup, Chow mein, Fried rice, egg roll and sweet sour chicken all for 9.95 each. The seating is nice. Booths are comfy. The food came so fast and it's one of the best Chow mein I've ever had! Only thing I didn't like was the waitress never checked on us to refill drinks but that'll get better over time, I hope. It was a call in order for pick up, Service Was Excellent, I had ordered for 2 and my friend has a allergic reaction to Shrimp, SO I added that to let them know prior to making anything. They called me Back and wanted me to double check with my friend that the Chow mein was made with Oyster sauce and would that affect them or not. They told me to call them back before they finished the order to let them know. Thank you! I did and it was alright. It's the Food Quality that wasn't. I picked this restaurant because of how long it's been in Redding thinking they had good food. But I guess that their Food Quality has dropped. The egg rolls were like mush on the inside, Couldn't tell what was what. The Beef & Broccoli was a disappointment, the Sweet and Sour Chicken was Good. Golden Star is the best American-Chinese food in Redding by far. While on the surface that doesn't sound like high praise, it should. They're always prompt when I place an order and the portions are generous. Even though it's clear that a few things are purchased premade, like pork buns, I really don't care because I wouldn't know where to purchase it anyways. read more

This is the best Chinese food we've found up here so far. We're originally from the Bay, so we are kind of spoiled when it comes to good food. The orange chicken is AMAZING. I love the addition of orange zest to the sauce. Also a fan of the chicken chow mein. The paper wrapped chicken was okay (again, we are spoiled, it's probably a solid 10/10 for Redding, if you can even find it anywhere else here). I'm not sure yet if I'm a fan of the hot n sour soup yet, I'll have to have more before I can fully decide. There was not a lot of meat in it, and it seemed like a lot of the flavor was in the bottom of the container. Could have been just a tiny bit more sour for me. We will happily keep coming back! Very surprised at how perfect everything was here. The chef is very skilled, and cooks the vegetables just enough to keep them crunchy but tender, or "tender crisp." I was hesitant to order a dish with scallops because most restaurants try to cut back on the number or serve tough little bay scallops. So I ordered the "seafood three flavors," which was shrimp, calamari and scallops. I could not believe how generous the portion was. Just as I was surprised at how many large scallops were in the dish, there were more buried beneath. The shrimp were perfectly deveined and cooked. There was minimum spice in this dish, only a tiny hint of garlic just on the shrimp. But there is pepper paste, black and white mixed pepper on the table, and soy sauce to kick it up a bit to your own liking. My only criticism would not be fair to judge the restaurant by, but its eggrolls are wrapped in thin spring roll wrappers instead of the thick bubbly crunchy wrappers, and they are the diameter of a thin hot dog. They were very oily, but this would be most restaurants nowadays. Funny, but the background music in the restaurant was also weird, new age glorious angelic singing, so it felt surreal to be eating in uber-glorious New Age music. Eh. Not impressed and sad that I wasted $22. I ordered walnut prawns and a hot and sour soup. Both servings were huge, so be aware that these are some serious family size portions. The walnut prawns had pretty good flavor, but something was weird. The mayo sauce (which, if you know walnut prawns, you know it's usually already coated on the shrimps) was in a separate container. The shrimps were breaded and fried, and then the mayo sauce was provided in a small container. For some reason I found this a little off-putting. The sauce was super thick and just kind of slopped onto the shrimp. It tasted good to me, but if you don't like heavy mayo flavor, it wouldn't taste good to you. The shrimps themselves tasted relatively fresh, but the breading was too thick for my liking. It was almost like corndog type batter. Way too fluffy and heavy for walnut shrimp. I understand why they separated the sauce, so the breading wouldn't become soggy, but I just wish they could have skipped the breading and incorporated the sauce. To be honest, Panda Express has way better walnut shrimp. Actually, now that I think about it, the shrimp were advertised as "prawns" but really they were small shrimp made to look like prawns because of the excessive breading. The hot and sour soup was just disgusting. I took one spoonful and spit it out. It tasted like water thickened with cornstarch mixed with an identifiable bitter flavor and red pepper flakes. I threw the whole container away. I don't have much else to say about that other than I usually don't have that kind of instant reaction to food. Not sure why this place has such great reviews, maybe their meat-heavy dishes taste better. Would not go back. read more

Chicken Chow Mein and the egg food young was horrible. Pork fried rice was very disappointing! Sweet and sour pork was decent. We were so looking forward to good Chinese meal after driving in from Oregon. We ordered and took it to go. The food didn't look anything like the pictures and I have never seen Egg foo young gravy with vegetables made like this. It seemed old. Redding is the halfway stop on my trips to Olympia, WA from SD, CA. I've been going to the Golden Star for years and they always serve hot, fresh and tasty food. Great place! I will always stop in for dinner on my overnights. I noticed a number of reviewers commenting about the lack of mask enforcement at this restaurant. I suggest that if you have an issue with people around you not wearing masks, it's your choice to leave or stay. Please do us all a favor and LEAVE. Over 40% of the population has already had this virus and we're approaching 1/3 of the population being vaccinated. Not a fan. Meat and veggies were all cooked well, not over or under cooked. Portions were on the generous side. However, there was very little flavor to any of the dishes we ordered?!?! We ended up having to add home ingredients. DO NOT order the Chinese chicken salad!!!! It was not a Chinese chicken salad! All it contained was iceberg lettuce in chunks, 5-6 pieces of grated carrots, a few halved cherry tomatoes and a small portion of chunky cut battered chicken! The dressing had way too much vinegar!
