Came here late at night around 1030 PM. First time ever. Read about how this is one of the old buildings in Downton Oxnard, so decided to check it out since it was the only place open at that time. Very friendly waitress greeted us upon entrance upstairs. We ordered to go as we had our little one with us. Food came quickly while only one other customer was present. We ordered Honey Walnut Shrimp, egg drop soup, and the shrimp corn dumplings. We liked the soup the best. Will have to return earlier in the day to and give it another chance. read more

Overall 3.5 - is that the rule for good Chinese?Once Golden Chicken Inn NOW New Chicken .. still oldest restaurant in Ventura County in downtown Oxnard. New owners. Authentic Chinese food, Beijing pies, dumplings and more ! It's an old building ... est since 1929 I believe. So old decor , nothing fancy and there are stairs to climb. We had red Mongolian Beef and General tso. Mongolian beef had a lot of veggies but beef was tender. Tso was crunchy. The restaurant was pretty empty . I think a lot of people grab to go because we were the only guests for the longest. The chef came out and didn't speak much English but was so excited to let us know he was happy to cook for us. Free soda if you pay with cash. We had cash and our dishes were about $16 . We left tip. Parking can be difficult. read more

This place is better than most Chinese restaurants from most Chinese area such as Alhambra and Chinatown. If you're looking for some fresh and juicy Beijing pie or just dumplings you can't go wrong with this place. I would say it was way better than other place that claim to serve the soup dumplings...*Tip: I suggest not to cut it in half the juice will flow out. Just pick it up and tear a small hole and sip/suck on the juice. The black pepper steak was very peppery but has a little too much onions. Overall, I will definitely come back to try the different flavors of the pie and try their dumplings. read more

I had lunch today at the newly opened New Chicken Chinese restaurant. This location has a long history--it was originally Golden Chicken Inn, first opened in 1929, and now under new ownership with just a name change. The interior looks almost identical to before, keeping that nearly 100-year-old charm. I ordered Mongolian Beef, House Fried Rice, and a Beijing Pie. * The meal came with complimentary soup. I asked for tea and water; however, the tea wasn't included and was later charged at $3.75. * The Mongolian Beef was ordered mild-spicy. The beef quality was excellent--tender and flavorful. Compared to other places, it was less sweet, and it was cooked more with onions than green onions, giving it a lighter taste. * The House Fried Rice was a combination with beef, chicken, and shrimp. It had a clean, less-oily flavor, though the taste itself was average rather than outstanding. * The Beijing Pie was filled with beef, chicken, and shrimp, and took about 15-20 minutes to prepare. It was full of hot juices, so I recommend biting into it carefully rather than cutting it in half. Overall, the food was enjoyable and the server's service was excellent. My rating today is 4.5 out of 5. Next time, I plan to try their dumplings and wonton soup. The only downsides: parking is street only, and the restaurant is on the second floor, which may be inconvenient for those who have trouble with stairs. Still, it was a peaceful weekday lunch, and I really enjoyed soaking in the atmosphere of a restaurant with a century of history. read more

So glad to try NEW CHICKEN , after some dark days it seems to be BACK! I ordered the Kung Pao Shrimp which came with steamed rice and yummy egg flower soup. I enjoyed the refreshing hot tea that I was served while waiting. They seem to specialize in a "Beijing Pie" and possibly dumplings as well which i have not yet tried. I did notice the dumplings can come either steamed or fried. The menu is fairly straight forward but certainly has some intriguing and seemingly authentic dishes, that are calling my name. Pretty sure they are open late, past 10 pm, which is a huge plus if you work until 9 pm and can still get some solid Chinese. Good vibe here so far The restaurant manager is very welcoming. If you used to love Golden Chicken Inn and have been missing it, it's a green light to give this one another shot. I'm glad I did! read more

Love the food at the original location in Monterey Park. Very happy that we don't need to drive 3 hours for great dumplings and pies BUT we will not be back until you start taking credit cards or digital payments. Last time we came at lunch and were told credit card machine was down. Luckily we had cash. Drive from Ventura and the first thing we were told was need d to pay in cash and that is policy now. Did not have enough and was not going to drive to an atm. We really want you to survive on a Oxnard built you won't if you don't take credit cards. I came here around 3pm and it was very quiet. I was greeted by a super nice gentleman who explained the menu to me and provided recommendations. I got different dishes to try and I was really satisfied and happy with the food. I totally regret not trying the dumplings. I will be going back just to try the dumplings. Didn't disappoint!!! Being around since 1920s. Little hole in the wall - upstairs. One chief so please be patient when dishes come out. We had the fried rice with noodles and I added pineapple . This could be a 4-star rating. Mainly I have tried this only once. The portions are plenty and each dish includes steam rice, which I preferred. The food is tasty. In regards to spicy, it is more aroma than hot and spicy. The beef, chicken were both tender. Chicken dishes I ordered, were white meat on Chicken with Brocolli, Spicy Chicken. The Chicken Chow mein, not sure it was all white meat, I did not eat that dish which my family did. I prefer noodle to be thinner, these are more round and thicker, even more thicker than spaghetti. It is worth another visit to try more items on the menu. Wish I didn't have to walk up the stairs to the restaurant :-) read more

Went to try it out for the first time this weekend. Decor is same as Golden Chicken Inn. But the food is exactly the the type of Chinese food that we need more of in the 805. Their Beijing meat pies are delicious! i recommend the beef or pork three delicacies pies. That means either beef or pork as the first "delicacy" with the other two ingredients being shrimp and green onion (I preferred the pork w three delicacies, but the beef with three delicacies was also good if you don't ear pork). Each Beijing Pie order comes with four pies. So delicious. I had leftovers the next day and they were equally good. Their dumplings are plump and juicy with several fillings to choose from we had the shrimp and pork, very good! We also had theBlack Pepper Beef which was solid, and Chicken Fried Noodles, which were just okay. They're wet, not crispy pan-fried. For appetizers, they brought out a clear soup with veggies and a bit of egg, and some fried wonton strips. Come for the nostalgia, and enjoy trying their Beijing Pies and juicy dumplings. Fried rice 4/5 a little wet (could be a bit more fried) - tastes very northern Chinese style. Kung pao chicken 4/5 a bit oily but solid. Lamb dumpling - very different. Lamb was great, a bit messy to eat but good. Chow mein beef with egg on top - 5/5 best I've had. Noodles were perfectly cooked. Rose tea 5/5 must try. Delicious. The rose tea and chow mein were my personal favorite. Please get permanent utensils. I lived in San Francisco for 5 years and understand the complexities of authentic Chinese cuisine and culture. This historic restaurant ranks up there with the best of the best! I ordered the lamb & cilantro Beijing pie, house chow mein, general Tso's chicken, and pork & cabbage boiled dumplings and it did not disappoint. Everything was piping hot and extremely flavorful 10 out of 10! I believe our host was named Mario - he was very attentive and knowledgeable about the local history of Ventura county. He understood how to effectively communicate each dish and what it entails. Great food, service, and unique atmosphere. HIGHLY RECOMMEND AND WORTH THE TRIP!!!
