AJ's is a fun little mom and pop Chinese restaurant and takeout spot in Ojai. It's nice to have some diversity in the area and I was impressed by how extensive their menu was! AJ's is off the main drag as you work your way up into Ojai. I'm grateful they have their own parking lot as it makes it easy to get over off the busy street. The signage was large and this spot was easy to find. The restaurant itself was impeccably clean inside and on a hot day they managed to keep this spot cool inside which was much appreciated. The customer service here and friendliness of the staff is A+. As soon as I walked in I was greeted with a friendly smile and everyone here was really nice. They value your business and make you feel special. The food was a solid 4/5. It's not the best Chinese food I've had but it certainly hits the spot and tasted very very fresh. I was impressed that I had to haul this food 30 minutes away and it was literally piping hot when I got to my destination. Love hot and fresh food that travels well! The hits: egg drop soup here is so freaking good. Reminds me of the flavors I grew up with. As simple as egg drop soup is a lot of places miss the mark but not here. It was definitely the right texture and super flavorful for such a simple bite. I'll be craving this simple soup from AJs for sure. Also had the chicken chow mein and it was super good. The right amount of oiliness and perfect noodle texture, a really good main dish served with some white rice. The only miss was the shrimp with lobster sauce. It wasn't bad just not my favorite. I like the sauce to be a little thicker and it wasn't as flavorful as some of my other bites here. It's okay though as they had many other shrimp options to pick from and I will be back to try more! read more

Both the dishes I ordered for dinner had an overpowering taste of Chinese 5 spice which should be subtle and not so predominant that the actual food's taste is lost. I went the next day an hour after they opened and very politely let them know how dissatisfying the food had been. They asked if I had a receipt which I didn't have told them the time of my visit based on my bank charge which showed their name on the charge too. They said they can't get to receipts the next day which sounds like a bunch of nonsense. I even had the dishes with me which proved it was their food and my bank charge. they didn't care to make it right. I am never going back. read more

Quality Chinese food and great customer service from this small but clean establishment. I live in Port Hueneme but I don't mind making the trip for food like this. You can tell the owners care about serving quality dishes with filling portions. You can also taste that the cooks are so skilled they can construct any of the assortment of dishes quickly that the wait has never been long for us. I'm so glad AJ's has reopened. :) I've been there twice since they've come back (after 14 months closed) and enjoy the food just as much as I had before. The atmosphere is improved - the interior and exterior are spruced up and the staff is friendly and helpful as always. Food is still served in to-go containers but they are nicer quality. ;P I'm not sure if they have quick-lunch options like they used to but I always like to get something custom anyway. Now they also have a lot of specialty boba teas and drinks which is nice. I'll probably eat here for lunch today too. Yay! read more

This place used to have the Best orange chicken Ever a few years ago not sure if a new owner came in and took over or what happened but menu is different. There are a lot of good choices still on their menu though I recommend the cream cheese filled wontons and their boba ice tea is on point! Prices are little on the high side. Did not end up eating here. Ordered our food, then I went to restroom (it's outside behind the bldg). On way to the restroom I found something disturbing (unsafe & unsanitary)- see picture. Told my dear who checked it out & then quickly cancelled our $30+ meal. We told woman at counter who then said something in Chinese to chef, then to us: "sorry, I didn't know this (was an unsanitary practice)." She refunded our money & we left. read more

It's pretty good! And the prices aren't beyond what you'd pay for really good Chinese food elsewhere. The high-end soups are great, I love the spicy fish fillet (that numbing red chile is a delight), the steamed or fried potstickers (dumplings) are good, & the potsticker sauce is good too. Which brings me to my first issue. The sauce was included with my to-go order of potstickers. Guess what sauce was not included with what? Plum sauce was not a given with the mu shu dish! Yes, I saw how I could order More sauce for like $.50, but there's not at least one included? Oh, well surely the pan-cake, at $.50 extra, is in addition to what has always come in every single Chinese food order I've always gotten all my life. But I get home, open up the delicious smelling bag and...nope. Not just no plum sauce: No pan cakes either. I Will survive this 1st world problem. But either they were very sneaky about not including this, making what's generally included one dollar more (likely worth it, but how was I to even know?) or they actually did say that (something like, "plum sauce & pan cakes extra/need to be ordered separately in addition to mu shu...") in the online menu, but not big enough to notice. Dude, seriously, just quit tricking people & raise price the dollar and include the sauce & pan cakes. Nobody likes to get home to this type of surprise. Finally, the chow mein noodles were a bit "stale" tasting. Like they've sat around for awhile, not quite the freshest. Never happened before at AJ's. Maybe just an off night, but so many things at the same time. Bummer. read more

The mongolian beef comes spicy so if you don't like it spicy ask for them to dial it back because it is aggressive. The portion is good sized and comes stir fried with onions. White rice is free on the side. It tastes really good and the owner is friendly. Food came out within 10 minutes and stayed hot for like 30 minutes on the drive home. A few Tables are outside but there's only 3 parking spaces so takeout or call ahead the pop in and out quick. read more

We tried this place a long time ago and didn't like the food at all. Since the ratings looked pretty good we thought we would give it another try. What a mistake. We got the orange chicken, sesame beef, and house special fried rice. The chicken was very mediocre. The sesame beef was all over fried crispy coating with hardly any beef inside. The fried rice was just okay and had very little meat and one shrimp. I wish I had my $42 back. If you want good Chinese food you have to go to Gourmet Oriental in Ventura. read more
