I've been a patron of Gourmet Oriental in Ventura for over 20 years. It used to serve the best Chinese food in town, but since the ownership changed, the portions now seem very meager. I understand that economic challenges have led to higher prices, but the food quality has noticeably declined. Out of nostalgia, I keep returning, only to be disappointed again. For example, I ordered pork chow mein, and it was mostly bland noodles--about 98%--with only 2% meat. As pork is the cheapest meat, I wonder how much they're actually saving. Unfortunately, this has led to losing customers rather than gaining them. I do not recommend this place. read more

This is the best Chinese food I've had in Ventura thus far. I was craving a yummy traditional chow mein and after perusing Yelp, I came across this restaurant and I'm so glad I did. The restaurant is over on the West Side in a large shopping center. Small but mighty is what I like to say. I ordered takeout and my food was prompt, warm, and just what I wanted to ring in the new year. The staff was quick and very sweet to ensure my order was correct upon pick up. I got the vegetable chow mein, tangerine chicken, and beef chow fun. The two main dishes came with sides of either white or fried rice; I picked fried rice. I really enjoyed the chow mein and tangerine chicken. The chicken was crispy and so flavorful and the chow mein was chewy and with plenty of fresh vegetables. I was very impressed with how clear my plate was after eating since most Chinese food places tend to be greasy. Not here! Even reheated the next day was enjoyable. The chow fun was okay and needed a bit more flavor in my opinion. I look forward to returning when I have a traditional Chinese food craving and hopefully can dine in. read more

I had ordered from Gourmet Oriental about a year ago and found the food to be good. I ordered last night and everything I ordered was terrible. The egg foo Jung was a big floury pancake with no sign of eggs, the veggies served on the side. The sweet and sour pork was overcooked and very dry with a few small pieces of pineapple, the bell pepper, carrots and onion were very minimal. I do not recommend them and will find another place to order Chinese food from. A waste of $68. read more

I had the chow mein wow the noodles were perfectly cooked--springy and just the right amount of chew--and they weren't greasy like you sometimes find elsewhere. The vegetables had a nice crunch, and the balance of flavors was spot on. Every bite had that subtle smoky "wok hei" flavor that makes a good chow mein really stand out. What I loved most is that it felt fresh and well-seasoned without being overly heavy. The portion was generous, and it tasted just as good leftover the next day. Paired with their dumplings (also a must-try!), it made for a really satisfying meal. PLEASE READ! I 100% understand ALL PLACES RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE. My mother was a waitress at Busy Bee Cafe as well as other well known places in Ventura. I get it....... to a point. Gourmet Oriental is a place my father and I would go to regularly. Today is CHRISTMAS 12/25/2025. My father went in to pickup dinner after his shift at the hospital. Christmas 2025. An elderly homeless woman asked my father to buy her dinner. She was obviously homeless, her umbrella is broken so my dad gave her an extra one he had in his car. (She didn't ask for). He purchased her food. It's POURING RAIN OUT as Ventura is on a flood watch. She asked him, "do you think they would let me eat inside?" Obviously she is conscious of how she looks and how others may perceive her. My father says, "of course, your meal was paid for". She proceeds to sit down and the staff here tried to tell her and my father she had leave and go outside. my father had to insist, "no, her meal is paid, for and she can eat inside. She's not going to bother anyone." It's sad to know this is how some people are treated on any day, let alone Christmas. There were only two other people inside the establishment. It's not as if this person was going to cause a decline in customers. Flood watch, Christmas, and a homeless woman who just wants a warm, dry to place to eat her meal THAT WAS PAID FOR. This is the only good thing that probably happened to her today. I wish this establishment didn't try to make her feel like an animal for attempting to enjoy a warm meal before she had to go back on the streets for the night in the rain. read more

Low key mad at myself for not trying this sooner. I have been in the Ventura/Oxnard area now for nearly 3 years and have been so sad to not have a decent Chinese spot around. Or so I thought until yesterday. I am so happy I found this place! Came in on a Monday afternoon around 5:30pm and got seated down right away. Our server was so kind and on it! She took our orders right away and within 5-7 minutes the cream cheese wontons were out. These little things were perfectly cooked and so good, the part that was the cherry on top was their sweet and sour sauce. It was sooooo good. Would have to rate this dish a 8 out of 10. Our dinner was our shortly and we tried the honey walnut shrimp and the vegetable pan fried soft noodle. The shrimp was good but I would rate a 7 out of 10. The shrimp was cooked well and had so much good flavor but it was the cold pineapple in the dish that kind of threw it off. For next time, I personally will order it without pineapple as the hot to cold contrast in the bite was just really off. However, the pan fried soft noodle was soooo good! Easily would give this dish a 9 out of 10. It didn't even need soy sauce or additional sauce as it was truly packed with so much good flavor. If your looking for a good Chinese place, please consider this place! I've seen this place on Yelp before and passed it over and defenitly regret it now. These people were unprepared for a rush on Christmas Day and had doordash drivers waiting for over 30 minutes and I waited over a whole hour. Everytime I asked about my customers food they said I don't know. Finally when everyone got their orders I asked again and they said they didn't know. If you eat Chinese food in the San Gabriel Valley, most other mom and pop places pale by comparison. This is such a place. The world wonton soup was good, but average, and my shrimp in lobster sauce was also just average. It did smell good with garlic notes, but the shrimp were tiny, lower grade regular shrimp. Price is $10.99, not bad. Service was good, but the waitress, who was nice, didn't bring any silverware after serving the soup. Very bland I ordered the tangerine chicken- better tasting then the rest of my food but still no taste of tangerine/orange chicken was not tender. Beef and broccoli and the bbq pork chow main needed to be drenched in soy sauce which I prefer to opt out of soy sauce. Soups broth had no profile wonton and egg ribbon soup. I just wish they had scallops. Pot stickers are great too, but not necessary better than other places. Very friendly, I always have to give back that "free" bag of the fried noodle things they throw in the to-go orders. Also: I mentioned being a bit selective: They're 99.999% accurate when I ask for "no celery, bell peppers, or water chestnuts" in my to go orders. I've eaten here twice now and both times had a good meal. Most recently I met a friend here for dinner on a Saturday night. I hadn't been to Gourmet Oriental in over a year so I ended up ordering too much food to try multiple things. I got their shrimp dumplings (they have some other name but I forget what it is) and shrimp with vegetables with pineapple sauce on the side. My friend got some sort of fried egg/veggie patty thing (like a Chinese omelet) and a huge bowl of hot & sour soup. I also got a small cup of egg flower soup. As mentioned by someone else, the egg flower (egg drop) soup was very thick... Surprisingly so and a little ... oddly so. I chalked it up to letting it get too cold but it was indeed much thicker than anywhere else I've been. This might put you off if you like a traditional egg drop soup. I LOVED my shrimp dumplings and the shrimp with vegetables! It wasn't too heavy and the shrimp were very tender and flavorful. I would definitely get these dishes again, though would probably pass on the soup. read more
