    Ma 71. Ma-Po Tofu

What an AMAZING restaurant. Hats off to you China Kitchen. First, the food -- China Kitchen has a diverse menu with high-quality vegetarian options that many competitors lack. The dinner combos are a great deal and all the side dishes were great - the egg roll was crispy and fresh, the shrimp was delicious, and the fried rice was well-seasoned, fluffy, and moist. The entrees were truly the star of the show. We got Ma Po tofu (traditional style) and dry wok veggie-chicken. The tofu was soft and creamy and the Ma Po sauce provided the sichuan numbing we've been searching for in Southern California. The dry wok was deeply flavorful. The veggie chicken was moist and savory and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. the ambiance - China kitchen was well decorated and elegant. The traditional artwork and attention to detail, down to the light fixtures made this a dining EXPERIENCE, not just a simple meal. The service-- Our waitress Ms. Vivian was warm, welcoming, and had a great personality! She frequently checked in on us and made us feel right at home. It was Ms Vivian's delightful personality that sealed the deal -- we will be coming back to China Kitchen soon. Thank you for a great dining experience!

China Kitchen is one of those gems very hard to find. The ambiance was perfect. Not too crowded. Parking was a breeze. Ordered the Kao Pao Beef, delicious! And the Honey Orange Chicken was equally satisfying. But let me tell you, that fried rice, that was perfect, so tasty and full had to order one to go. Will definitely be back next time I'm in Ventura. (Based in DTLA)

We stopped here for dinner but couldn't stay. Unfortunately, it was not what we were looking for. The lady at the front greeted us , sat as down and walked away without saying a word. We just looked at each other . Waited a few minutes and she never came back . Place is older with paper menus. There was a couple there but it was empty otherwise. Space is old school with carpeting. We just walked out as we didn't know what was going on with the lady leaving us there and we were kindly hungry. We need service and this place ... lacked it. Sorry but I don't think I'd be back. Check it out .. it may be for you :)

The food and service are so good!!! There are tons of vegetarian options and the prices are so reasonable. Right next to the Target and new Home Goods. I would definitely recommend!

Went back since my usual was closed (again as per my last review lol) and this place looked empty so we opted to have soup on this cold, February evening. We ordered: Wor wonton soup- much better in terms of filling Egg drop soup- tasty and your usual Dry wok beef- pretty delicious and spicy. I would order again. Crispy noodles- thin crispy noodles topped with a special chef gravy sauce and veggies. Would get again but request more crispy noodles as we are crunch lovers. There was only one person assisting and taking orders, handling takeout.

After looking at menus and comparing we decided on Peking. Sure glad we did too! I have to say if you are ever in Ventura please give this place a try! First thing I noticed is this place is simple yet has a quality about it. I would bring a date here, rather maybe a second or third date. It's nice inside. Wait staff was amazing. Now to the good stuff! I ordered chicken chow fun and partner had Mushu pork and for the appetizer we ordered the paper wrapped chicken. The chicken hit the table first wrapped in tin foil. That didn't deter us at all. This was served with duck sauce and spicy mustard. The mustard was amazing but i love spice! Both were good but the mustard opened up my nasal passages and made me go wow!! Awesome! The two main dishes hit the table and we dug in. Both were great! Let me tell you how hard it is to find a good Chinese place that isn't swimming in soy and oil! This place seasoned correctly and was not greasy at all!! I will tell you this; if you like fast Chinese food like Panda Express and that is what you think of Chinese food then stay there. Here you'll get properly seasoned fair. Over all I recommend and when back in Ventura will visit again for sure! The pictures don't do this place justice.

Also, super hot tea in a pot to share, the Chinese year calendar placemats, big round tables for large parties (5+) and a backroom for even larger parties. Yolanda's downtown put in a separate little backroom when they remodeled, but hardly any other restaurants seem to have them anymore. Love the vibe, but if the food sucked we wouldn't go. And we go, we go a lot, we are regulars. FRESHEST vegetables, soft velveted chicken pieces, not hard tasteless rubber chicken, and served HOT, freshly made and quick. On the lunch special menu, I recommend the chicken with string beans that comes with a full flavored brown sauce or the milder chicken with vegetables with a colorless clear glaze, both with vegetables so fresh and perfectly cooked, they can restart a healthy habit eating week. Hub is a fan of the hot and sour soup that comes with the lunch specials. He says it's the best he's had, and he eats out almost everyday all over. Also he likes the hot mustard they have. I guess there's a difference and he says there's is authentic and the best. I get the egg flower, which is plainer and just what I want if tucking in for some hot cozy soup before chicken, rice and vegetables, both served piping hot. They used to serve an egg roll with the lunch special, but no more and the fried rice used to have vegetable squares in it, but now only soy sauce it seems, in case you haven't been here in a while and don't know. Last, the orange chicken is really good and used to be my usual lunch special, but it got knocked off that pedestal by the chicken and vegetables, which along with the chicken and string beans, is craveable.

I sat for a little bit while the server was clearing the table next to mine to seat another party. I wasn't given a menu until that party was seated and given their menu. Almost immediately after the older lady approached to take my order but since I hadn't had time to look it over I asked for a minute, but I did order hot tea. After a few minutes I was ready to order. At that time the older lady still haven't brought me the tea. The server went to take the order of the table next to me, even though they were seated later than me, and then came to take my order. There were two times the server used my table to put things down that she couldn't hold on to when serving the table behind me. One was the water pitcher (I didn't have any water) and the second time was an empty bowl. She would grab it afterwards but didn't say anything at all both times. I thought that was a bit odd. Prices have gone up. They no longer give the fried wanton crisp with the lunch special. Fried rice was mainly rice, although I did find two little specks of egg. The soup also didn't seem to have as much ingredients as before either. Another thing I noticed was the tip percentages listed on the receipt was after tax. Although the food still tasted good, I will only stick to doing takeout from here.

It was around 2 PM on a Tuesday--not busy at all. The weather was nice (about 72 degrees), and we had our dog with us, so we planned to sit at one of the outdoor tables. I walked in with a smile, hand waved, and said: "Hi, we'd like a table for two, please... we'll be sitting outside." The woman working there suddenly started yelling at me, "No, you eat inside! Can't you see I'm busy?!"-- complete with hand gestures. There were literally only 3 tables being served inside... and one left before we even ordered. I calmly explained we had a dog, which is why we wanted to sit outside. OMG... I was sooooo shocked by her tone and her raising her voice at me that I asked my husband to go in and just order the food to-go instead since I can't handle being talked to like that... and we're already starving and haven't had lunch yet. Honestly, what's the point of having outdoor seating if customers aren't allowed to use it... especially in that kind of tone? My husband said she later apologized when he was paying for our food "sorry, to your wife," but honestly, YELLING at customers is NEVER okay, busy or not. Totally unacceptable behavior! Very rude. Food: blah and meh. I agree with some of the reviews here. Panda Express would have been a better choice. I've included pictures of the outside seating for reference
