The server seemed annoyed, left the credit card receipt for me to sign, and went to get the chili sauce. When she comes back with 1 packet,she looks down at the receipt (I'm sure to see if I left any tip - I didn't),. I ask for another packet of chili sauce and she exclaims "OH MY GOD!!" "OK, WAIT!" I didn't say a word and she came back and gives me another one, exclaiming "HERE!" Not withstanding this horrible service, the fried rice itself was bad. It was mushy and way to expensive. The food and service are good. Feels very authentic. The restaurant has a feel like any other restaurant that fits into the Asian cities like San Gabriel or Orange County. When you come in, you are greeted then seated quickly. Drink orders are taken quickly. Little snacks on the table right away too. Those crunchy little sticks with some sweet chili sauce. It's been a while since I've dined in at this restaurant, but I was recently there and the experience was a little different. The older lady pointed to the table and I sat down. I sat for a little bit while the server was clearing the table next to mine to seat another party. I wasn't given a menu until that party was seated and given their menu. Almost immediately after the older lady approached to take my order but since I hadn't had time to look it over I asked for a minute, but I did order hot tea. After a few minutes I was ready to order. At that time the older lady still haven't brought me the tea. The server went to take the order of the table next to me, even though they were seated later than me, and then came to take my order. There were two times the server used my table to put things down that she couldn't hold on to when serving the table behind me. One was the water pitcher (I didn't have any water) and the second time was an empty bowl. She would grab it afterwards but didn't say anything at all both times. I thought that was a bit odd. Prices have gone up. They no longer give the fried wanton crisp with the lunch special. Fried rice was mainly rice, although I did find two little specks of egg. The soup also didn't seem to have as much ingredients as before either. Another thing I noticed was the tip percentages listed on the receipt was after tax. Came here with to celebrate a birthday lunch and I was so pleasantly surprised by the authentic flavor! We ordered the egg foo young, sautéed green beans, chicken chow fun, yang chow fried rice, steamed sole, sizzling black pepper beef, walnut shrimp, calamari, orange chicken, and cheese wontons tons. They perfected the balance of flavors and the cook/wok char on the chow fun. The simplest dish is always the hardest to execute well and this was unanimously the absolute best dish! The next three dishes I really enjoyed were the orange chicken, yang chow fried rice, and the green beans. The calamari and sole were just ok but I wouldn't order them again. I didn't try the walnut shrimp or wontons but everyone enjoyed those. I definitely would not order the sizzling beef or the egg foo young again - the sizzling beef was over velveted and was basically mush, and the flavor was not good. The egg foo young was also not good, it was like a frozen thick dough patty that was defrosted and drenched in gravy. I can't believe that it's been so long since giving this spot an updated review. Spring Garden is definitely in my top favorite Chinese restaurants in all of the 805. It's consistently delicious, the lunch specials can not be beat, and the staff are so friendly and kind. I've been here for dinner a few times and you get the traditional menu and prices. But if I had to recommend this spot to someone I would highly recommend coming for their weekday lunch specials. For under $15 you get a complete lunch combo. The lunch dine in combos come with soup, a main, rice, and fried wonton chips. The portions are super generous and the food is always made fresh to order. My top dishes here include: - Orange Chicken - Mongolian Beef - Shrimp with lobster sauce - Shrimp with black bean sauce The staff here are also what make this spot 5 star worthy. I've been coming here for about 8 years and the same 2-3 gals work the lunch shift. These ladies are awesome. Super friendly and quick. I appreciate that when I'm coming in for a lunch break they get me out in order 30 minutes. I never feel rushed but I appreciate the hustle. Yolanda's downtown put in a separate little backroom when they remodeled, but hardly any other restaurants seem to have them anymore. Love the vibe, but if the food sucked we wouldn't go. And we go, we go a lot, we are regulars. FRESHEST vegetables, soft velveted chicken pieces, not hard tasteless rubber chicken, and served HOT, freshly made and quick. On the lunch special menu, I recommend the chicken with string beans that comes with a full flavored brown sauce or the milder chicken with vegetables with a colorless clear glaze, both with vegetables so fresh and perfectly cooked, they can restart a healthy habit eating week. Hub is a fan of the hot and sour soup that comes with the lunch specials. He says it's the best he's had, and he eats out almost everyday all over. Also he likes the hot mustard they have. We learned we can't handle their lo mein so we took the chow fun alternative, our well loved chicken & vegetables and shrimp with snow peas for meeeeee. All were well enjoyed. I wish there were a way to keep snow peas to keep cooking once they pour it into the little black takeout containers, but you can't beat their white garlic sauce. There wasn't very much pineapple, sadly, and they were very small pieces. The onions and peppers were cut big and were had lots of flavor. And their Hot and Sour soup was amazing. Awesome experience with a super friendly staff and really good food. My Goddess and I were across the street doing some business with a local firm when we decided we were hungry. Chinese popped into mind and we were on our way via naviguesser to another establishment when I accidentally turned into this parking lot and immediately parked right in front under a shad tree. Upon walking in we were greeted with a very lovely smile and invited to sit at a very clean and well kept table. My wife ordered cashew chicken and I ordered kung pao chicken, btoh lunch specials with fried rice. The plates were out in less than 15 minutes and still sizzling and popping. The odor was straight gourmet Asian and the meal was delectable! If you are anywhere near the civic center you really have to try Spring Garden. Ordered steamed chicken and vegetables . The chicken had texture of slime. I picked it all out . It was almost like chicken skin but softer and mushier. My husband ordered happy family so I thought to try some of that. Same problem. Chicken was like rubbery slime and beef too. I do not think either are real meat. I have never had this experience. Second time here, great experience again. Walked in (this time at around 2pm giving myself plenty of time for lunch) and was immediately sat, even though the woman at the front was taking a take-out order when I walked in she paused that process to acknowledge me and offer me to sit wherever I liked. I took the corner table which is probably my new favorite table because I could easily people watch all the other diners while i waited (a very short wait) to order. Had the same thing this time around, General Tso lunch special with hot and sour soup. But instead of tea (trying to avoid caffeine) I had a sprite. Sprite came in a can with a glass of ice. Makes sense for the type of restaurant although I was somehow expecting it to be a fountain drink- although I didn't ask beforehand. Regardless, service was very fast and very polite, and the food was great. What more can you ask for an $11.99 lunch special? It's the best deal in town and the food is awesome, so who cares that the sprite was from a can. The Mongolian beef was tasty and had the right ratio of beef to veggies. The restaurant was not stingy with the meat. Overall, both dishes made for a good meal. I decided to try this place out for a weekday luncheon. I thought this was a pretty good Chinese restaurant. The place was full inside during the lunch hour, but I had no problem being seated and the service was fine. They have an extensive selection of luncheon specials to choose from, and they all come with a cup of soup as well as rice. The menu says it also comes with an egg roll, but they put a couple of wontons on my plate instead. All the lunch specials are priced around the $10 to $11 range. The food is not good... I can't eat chicken or beef and had asked if the egg drop soup was made from a chicken or beef broth and she told us it was not. It is definitely made with a chicken broth! Fried rice had no carrots, no peas, and no egg! Orange chicken was not good. The waitress asked the usual "how is everything" as she sped by and was gone before we had a chance to answer. Overall this place is ridiculous! I have been twice. Wasn't that great the first time, figured it may have been an off day but guess it was business as usual.
